1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo buy Bitcoin and hold it yourself, choose a purchase service available where you live, set up a wallet whose recovery process you understand, back it up before sending funds, and verify the withdrawal details carefully. Self-custody gives you control of the keys—but also makes you responsible for protecting them and the recovery information.
Understand the risks before buying
Bitcoin’s price can change unpredictably over short periods. Bitcoin.org describes it as a high-risk asset, not a guaranteed way to make money. Do not use money you need for essential expenses or savings you cannot afford to lose.

Custody is another risk to weigh. If a company controls the keys, you depend on its security and its ability and willingness to honor withdrawals. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you must protect the wallet and its recovery information yourself. Bitcoin.org puts the irreversibility plainly: “Bitcoin has no central authority to reverse a mistake.”

Choose a purchase service available in your location
Availability, fees, withdrawal rules, and legal protections differ by location and provider. Bitcoin.org warns about fake exchanges, but its reviewed guidance does not rank providers or establish which service is suitable in any particular jurisdiction. Before opening an account, check the provider independently through its official website and review:
- Whether the service is available to you and permits withdrawals to a wallet you control.
- Its current withdrawal terms, fees, and any limits that apply to your account.
- How it secures accounts and what identity or verification steps it requires.
- Whether the site and contact details match the provider’s official channels, rather than an ad, search placement, or unsolicited message.
Bitcoin.org’s buy page discloses that its purchase widget is provided by MoonPay and is not associated with Bitcoin.org. That disclosure is not an endorsement, nor does it establish that the service is available or appropriate in every location.

Secure your purchase-service account
Use a unique, strong password and enable multifactor authentication if the service offers it. Do not reuse a password from email or another account: control of your email can help an attacker take over accounts that rely on it for password resets. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance recommends strong passwords and multifactor authentication for custodial services.
Choose a wallet that fits how you will use Bitcoin
A wallet manages the keys used to access and send Bitcoin; it does not remove the need to protect those keys and back up the wallet. Bitcoin.org’s wallet chooser distinguishes mobile, desktop, and hardware options. The broad trade-offs are:
Rank #3
- Proven security at scale: Over 9 years and millions of cards issued with no known remote hacks, while military‑grade EAL6+ security keeps your private keys locked inside the chip. Your cryptocurrencies stay strongly protected from online attackers.
- Tap once to manage your entire crypto wallet across 90 blockchains - no USB cables or Bluetooth, no batteries, no setup. Access 14,100+ coins & tokens, DeFi, NFTs, and staking instantly from your phone
- Smart backup: Use your second Tangem Wallet as your Backup keys with end‑to‑end encryption; no more papers, pictures. If one card is lost, the remaining can still restore full access, with an optional seed phrase available for advanced users.
- Engineered to last up to 25 years: Waterproof (IP69K), shockproof and tested for extreme temperatures from −25°C to 50°C. A durable cold wallet with long‑term protection and independently audited security.
- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
| Wallet type | Control and exposure | Everyday use | Backup and recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Can give you control of the keys, but the wallet is on an internet-connected phone. | Convenient for everyday spending. | Requires the backup method specified by that wallet. Losing the phone or losing access to the app does not replace the need for a usable backup. |
| Desktop | Can give you control of the keys; a computer may be exposed to malware. | Useful when you prefer managing a wallet on a computer, but less portable than a phone. | Follow the wallet’s own backup and recovery instructions; a computer copy alone is not a recovery plan. |
| Hardware | Designed to keep keys offline, which can suit longer-term savings; it still requires careful setup and recovery protection. | Less convenient for frequent use than a mobile wallet. | Protect the recovery information generated during setup. A hardware device does not make a lost recovery phrase recoverable. |
These are category-level trade-offs, not a ranking of brands. Compare the wallet’s control model, online or offline exposure, ease of use, recovery process, supported address and network features, privacy, and fees. Bitcoin.org’s chooser also identifies control, validation, transparency, environment, privacy, and fees as comparison criteria. No wallet category eliminates the need for a backup.
Set up and back up the wallet before funding it
- Get the wallet from its official source. Confirm the developer or manufacturer and use its official setup and recovery instructions.
- Create the wallet yourself. For a hardware wallet, obtain it from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Generate the recovery phrase during first-time setup; do not use a phrase supplied with the device.
- Make the backup the wallet requires. Wallets do not all use the same backup method. Follow the chosen wallet’s instructions for backing up the whole wallet and for restoring it.
- Keep recovery information private and secure. Store it offline in a place protected from loss or damage. Where appropriate, keep secure copies in more than one physical location, balancing resilience against the risk of someone else finding them.
- Learn how restoration works. Use the wallet maker’s safe recovery process to confirm that your backup can restore access before you transfer a meaningful amount.
Never disclose a recovery phrase or private key to someone claiming to be support. Bitcoin.org says permanently lost self-custody wallet information cannot be recovered by developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges. Its wallet security guidance explains backups; its scam guidance covers recovery phrases and hardware-device risks.

Withdraw Bitcoin carefully
- Open the receiving wallet and use its receive function to display the address for the Bitcoin you intend to receive.
- Enter that address in the purchase service’s withdrawal flow. Confirm the asset and network details match what the wallet supports.
- Check the entire destination address and the amount in both the service’s confirmation screen and the wallet. Do not rely only on the first or last characters.
- For a larger transfer, consider sending a small test amount first. This is a practical precaution, not a guarantee against every mistake. Check that it arrives in the intended wallet before sending the rest.
- Allow for confirmations. Bitcoin.org explains that confidence in a transaction increases as it receives confirmations. How many to wait for depends on the value and the risk you are willing to accept.
Bitcoin.org notes that Bitcoin payments are irreversible through a central authority. Checking the address and amount before confirming matters because a transfer sent to the wrong destination may not be recoverable.
Recognize scams at the buying and custody steps
- Fake exchanges: An offer with an unusually competitive price may be a lure. Verify the service independently rather than trusting an advertisement, search placement, or direct message.
- Counterfeit hardware wallets: A device may arrive with a recovery phrase already known to an attacker or with altered firmware. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, inspect the packaging, and generate the phrase yourself on first use.
- Fake support: An impostor may ask for your recovery phrase, private key, or remote access to your device. Do not provide them; legitimate support should not need your recovery phrase.
- Address poisoning: A scammer may put a lookalike address in your transaction history to tempt you to copy it later. Verify every character of the destination address when sending, rather than checking only its beginning or end.
- Phishing: A message or imitation site may try to collect account credentials or wallet secrets. Navigate to the service through its official site and never enter a recovery phrase into a link sent by an unsolicited contact.
Bitcoin.org documents these scam patterns in its security guidance. None of the checks above makes every scam impossible, but they address common ways attackers target purchase accounts, wallet setup, and transfers.
Maintain the wallet and understand local obligations
Keep wallet software current; Bitcoin.org says updates provide important stability and security fixes. Keep recovery details private, and periodically verify that the backup can restore the wallet using the wallet maker’s safe process. Do not expose recovery information while testing it.
Tax treatment, exchange licensing, and consumer protections depend on where you live. Bitcoin.org’s general guidance does not settle those local requirements, so check current information from the relevant authorities in your jurisdiction before buying or selling.
