To buy Bitcoin more safely, verify the seller independently, review the full transaction terms before paying, decide who will control the private keys, and keep records from the first purchase. This guide is for U.S. readers; people elsewhere should check their local consumer-protection and tax rules. Bitcoin can lose value, and a transfer to the wrong or fraudulent address may be difficult or impossible to recover.
How to buy Bitcoin more safely
-
Stop if someone is pressuring you to send Bitcoin
Do not buy or transfer Bitcoin because a caller, online contact, romantic partner, supposed government office, or “investment expert” says it is urgent, promises guaranteed returns, or tells you to move funds to a “safe” wallet. The FTC warns that scammers may pressure people to acquire cryptocurrency and send it onward; a blockchain transfer may not be recoverable. A government does not create a personal Bitcoin account for you to protect your money. See the FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance and its Bitcoin ATM warning.

Choose a purchase route, then verify the provider
Bitcoin may be available through an exchange, app, website, or cryptocurrency ATM. These are ways to buy, not endorsements. Before using a provider, look it up independently and search its name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint,” as the FTC recommends. Check that you are using the provider’s genuine website or app rather than a link sent by an unsolicited contact.

Review the complete cost and withdrawal terms
Before confirming, inspect the displayed price and any disclosed spread or markup, funding method, transaction fee, withdrawal fee, purchase limits, and withdrawal rules. A quoted price alone may not show the full cost. Terms and fees vary by provider and can change; review the details shown for your actual transaction rather than relying on a general fee estimate.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Decide where the Bitcoin will be held
Choose between leaving it with a provider and controlling it through a self-custody wallet. Those options shift responsibility and risk in different ways. A wallet stores private keys—the credentials used to access and authorize transactions—not the Bitcoin itself. The SEC explains this distinction in its crypto custody bulletin.
-
Keep transaction records immediately
Save the date and time, amount of Bitcoin, U.S.-dollar value, fees, confirmation details, and information needed to establish your tax basis. The IRS says digital-asset transactions may need to be reported even when they do not produce a taxable gain or loss. Its digital-assets guidance explains reporting and recordkeeping.

Where can you buy Bitcoin?
Exchanges, apps, websites, and Bitcoin ATMs are possible purchase routes, but the route alone does not establish that a provider is trustworthy or suitable. Independently verify the provider and its contact details, review its current custody and withdrawal terms, and understand what happens if an account is restricted or the platform fails. Do not assume that a familiar app is equivalent to a bank account or that Bitcoin held through a provider has the same protections as an insured bank deposit.

Should Bitcoin stay with a provider or go in a wallet?
The practical choice is not simply “online versus offline.” Consider who controls the keys, how the funds could be compromised, how you would recover access, what happens if a provider fails, how convenient access and transfers need to be, and any device or transaction costs.

| Option | Who controls the keys | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Provider or exchange custody | The provider | Convenient access, but you depend on the provider’s custody, account access, and withdrawal arrangements; a platform can fail. |
| Hot wallet self-custody | You, through an internet-connected wallet | You control access, but must protect credentials and guard against phishing, malware, and mistakes. |
| Cold wallet self-custody | You, using keys kept offline | Offline key storage can reduce online exposure, but you must protect recovery information and understand the recovery process; physical devices may cost money. |
These choices do not have one universally safest answer. Provider custody means relying on a third party, while self-custody makes you responsible for securing the keys and recovery information. In either case, theft, compromised access, or a mistake can result in a loss. The SEC’s custody bulletin describes these responsibilities.
Do you need a hardware wallet?
No. A physical cold-wallet device is an optional way to keep private keys offline, not a universal safety upgrade. It adds setup and recovery responsibilities: you need to protect the recovery information and know how to restore access if the device is lost or damaged. A device does not remove the risk of losing access through mishandled recovery details, and it does not make Bitcoin’s price stable. Consider one only if you understand and can manage those responsibilities. The SEC outlines the role and risks of cold wallets in its retail custody bulletin.

What risks should you understand before buying?
- Price volatility: Bitcoin’s price can change sharply, so you can lose value.
- Limited protections: Bitcoin held in a wallet or with an exchange does not have the same protections as bank deposits or securities accounts, the SEC cautions. Check the current terms and rules that apply to a particular provider or product rather than assuming broad protections.
- Loss or platform problems: Theft, malware, mistakes, compromised access, or provider failure can put funds at risk.
- Hard-to-reverse transfers: A Bitcoin transfer to a wrong or scammer-controlled address is not like a card payment that can routinely be reversed. The FTC warns that recovery may not be available.
- Scam pressure: Urgency, guaranteed returns, impersonation, and instructions to move funds to a “safe” wallet are warning signs. Verify claims through independently obtained contact details, not the contact information supplied by the person pressuring you.
The SEC’s Bitcoin and virtual currency investment alert discusses volatility and protection limits; the FTC explains common cryptocurrency scams in its consumer guidance.

U.S. federal taxes and Bitcoin records
The IRS treats digital assets as property for federal tax purposes. A sale, exchange, or other disposition may have to be reported even if it results in no taxable gain or loss. Keep records that can establish what happened and your basis, including the asset, date and time, quantity, fair market value in U.S. dollars, and related fees. Consult the IRS digital-assets guidance for current rules; tax treatment depends on your circumstances.

What Form 1099-DA changes—and what it does not
For sales effected after 2025, the IRS’s 2026 Instructions for Form 1099-DA describe mandatory broker reporting of gross proceeds for digital assets, mandatory basis reporting for covered securities, and voluntary basis reporting for noncovered securities. A broker statement does not replace your own records or your reporting responsibilities. Check current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional about your situation.
