You can buy bitcoin through a cryptocurrency exchange or directly from another person, including through a peer-to-peer marketplace. After buying, decide whether to leave it with a custodian or move it to a wallet you control. The right route depends on where you live, the provider’s costs and protections, and whether you want to hold bitcoin you can transfer or only gain price exposure.
Choose how you want to acquire bitcoin
Bitcoin.org describes buying through an exchange and exchanging directly with another person—in person or through a peer-to-peer service—as common ways to acquire bitcoin. You may also receive bitcoin in payment for goods or services. Availability, identity checks, funding options, costs, and protections vary by country and provider; an exchange directory listing is not an endorsement or proof that a service is available where you live.

Cryptocurrency exchange
An exchange provides an account or interface for placing a buy order. Before confirming, check the final amount of bitcoin you will receive and the total cost. The displayed price may include a spread—the difference between the quoted price and the market price—and the provider may also charge an explicit fee. Review both rather than comparing only a headline fee or quoted price.
Peer-to-peer purchase
A peer-to-peer service connects buyers and sellers, while a direct in-person transaction involves dealing with the other person yourself. These routes can carry payment-reversal, counterparty, and personal-safety risks. Where available, platform protections such as escrow or multisignature arrangements can reduce some risks, but they do not eliminate the need to verify the payment and transaction terms. Avoid unsafe meeting locations; Bitcoin.org warns that in-person exchanges can expose people to robbery or counterfeit cash.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Receive bitcoin for something you sell
You can receive bitcoin as payment for goods or services rather than buying it with cash. Agree in advance on the amount, payment timing, and how you will verify receipt. Receiving bitcoin is not the same as receiving a reversible card payment: bitcoin transfers generally do not have an ordinary reversal mechanism.
Compare providers before paying
There is no universally suitable exchange or payment method. Availability and terms are local and can change, so check the provider’s current information for your jurisdiction before opening an account or sending funds.

- Security and support: Look for clear security controls, accessible support channels, and an understandable dispute process. A provider’s existence or directory listing is not proof of its safety or reliability.

Place an order carefully
- Choose a provider or counterparty. Verify local availability, eligibility, payment terms, and withdrawal options before depositing money or agreeing to a transaction.
- Review the order details. Check the bitcoin quantity, quoted price, spread or fee, payment amount, and any withdrawal terms shown in the final confirmation screen.
- Confirm only when the terms are clear. Do not proceed if the total cost, recipient, or payment instructions differ from what you expected.
- Save the records. Keep the confirmation and transaction details, including date, quantity, value, and fees. These records matter for tracking your holdings and, in the United States, may be relevant to tax reporting.
- Decide where the bitcoin will be held. Leaving it in a hosted account and withdrawing it to a wallet are different custody choices, each with distinct responsibilities.
Choose custody: provider account or your own wallet
Buying bitcoin and controlling its keys are separate decisions. A hosted exchange account may be convenient, but the service controls the keys and you depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. With self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for protecting them and the recovery information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Choice | Who controls the keys | Main responsibility or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted account | The service | You rely on the provider’s security, continued operation, and withdrawal policies. |
| Self-custody wallet | You | You must protect the keys and recovery information; losing the recovery information can make the bitcoin permanently inaccessible. |
If you keep bitcoin with a provider
Use the provider’s available account-security controls and understand its withdrawal rules. Remember that an account balance is not the same as personally holding the private keys. Access to withdrawals depends on the provider’s systems and policies.

If you use self-custody
Protect your recovery phrase offline, keep a secure backup, and make sure you understand how recovery works before transferring a significant amount. A hardware wallet is one storage option Bitcoin.org characterizes as among the more secure methods and as suited to larger amounts, but the device alone does not make funds safe: losing it without a proper backup can mean losing access. Buy hardware wallets only from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and generate the recovery phrase during first use. Counterfeit devices may come with a phrase already known to an attacker or modified firmware.
Protect yourself from scams and mistaken transfers
Bitcoin transfers generally lack an ordinary reversal mechanism. Confirm the destination before sending, and check the entire receiving address rather than relying on a few characters at the beginning or end.

- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Legitimate support should not ask you to disclose either. Anyone with this information may be able to take the bitcoin.
- Watch for fake exchanges and support accounts. Use the service’s official channels and be skeptical of unsolicited messages, links, and requests to move funds.
- Check the full address. Address-poisoning scams can put a misleading address in transaction history or other places where a user might copy it. Verify every character against the intended recipient.
- Do not trust guaranteed returns or urgency. Promises of guaranteed profit and pressure to act immediately are warning signs, not evidence of a legitimate opportunity.
- Be wary of coercive payment demands. Do not send bitcoin because someone threatens you or insists that a bitcoin ATM is required to resolve a problem.
- Question recovery offers. Be cautious of anyone who claims they can recover lost bitcoin in exchange for an upfront payment or access to your wallet information.
U.S. federal tax and recordkeeping basics
This section is specific to U.S. federal tax guidance; it is not individualized tax advice. The IRS treats digital assets such as bitcoin as property, so general property-tax principles apply. Buying bitcoin alone is not necessarily a taxable event under the cited guidance; a later sale or other disposition may have tax consequences.
For a U.S.-dollar sale, the IRS says a taxpayer may need to recognize a capital gain or loss. The calculation generally compares the amount realized, including allocable transaction costs, with adjusted basis. Keep records of the purchase date, quantity, dollar value, fees, transfers between wallets, and later sales or other dispositions so you can establish the relevant amounts.

IRS broker-reporting rules are phased. For covered transactions, brokers must report gross proceeds for transactions on or after January 1, 2025; basis reporting applies to certain covered transactions on or after January 1, 2026. The IRS notes that many 2025 Forms 1099-DA will not include basis, so taxpayers may need to calculate it themselves. These reporting requirements do not replace your recordkeeping or tax-reporting responsibilities. Tax rules differ outside the United States and can change.
U.S. spot bitcoin ETPs are exposure, not wallet bitcoin
In the United States, a spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) may offer bitcoin price exposure through a brokerage account without requiring you to operate a personal wallet. Investor.gov describes spot bitcoin ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts that hold the crypto asset. Their shares are not bitcoin you can directly send or spend from a personal wallet.
| Feature | Bitcoin held directly | U.S. spot bitcoin ETP shares |
|---|---|---|
| What you hold | Bitcoin in a hosted account or wallet | Shares in an exchange-traded commodity trust |
| Direct transfer or spending | Wallet bitcoin can be transferred; spending depends on the recipient and circumstances | Shares are not bitcoin you can transfer or spend from a personal wallet |
| Wallet and key handling | Required if you use self-custody; a hosted account instead relies on the provider | Personal wallet and key operation are not required for holding the shares |
| Market and product considerations | Bitcoin’s price is volatile; custody and transaction decisions are your own or depend on your provider | Shares may deviate from bitcoin’s price; the product structure and current fees should be checked in its disclosures |
Investor.gov says these spot products are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. It also warns that bitcoin is highly speculative and volatile and that ETP shares may not track bitcoin’s price exactly. An ETP is therefore a different way to seek exposure, not a substitute for owning transferable bitcoin.
