How to Buy Bitcoin and Hold It: Choose Your Exposure and Custody

To buy Bitcoin and hold it, first decide whether you can accept the risk of a highly speculative asset, then choose between owning Bitcoin directly and buying shares of a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP). Direct ownership requires a decision about who controls the private keys: you or a custodian. An ETP avoids wallet management but has its own fees and may not track Bitcoin’s price exactly. None of these choices makes a long-term loss unlikely or impossible.

Should you buy Bitcoin and hold it?

Only consider holding Bitcoin with money you can afford to lose. The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy says, “Investors should understand that bitcoin and ether are highly speculative investments.” Bitcoin’s price can fluctuate widely, and waiting longer does not guarantee a recovery or a profit. The SEC’s September 9, 2024 bulletin explains the risks of spot Bitcoin ETPs and the underlying asset: SEC investor bulletin on spot Bitcoin ETPs.

There is no holding period that turns Bitcoin into a guaranteed or protected investment. Decide in advance how much loss you could tolerate, and do not base the decision on an assumed return or on past price performance.

Choose how you want Bitcoin exposure

There are two distinct routes: buy Bitcoin directly, or buy shares in a spot Bitcoin ETP through a brokerage account. The second route is not the same as owning Bitcoin in a wallet.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Choice What you hold Key considerations
Direct Bitcoin Bitcoin, accessed using private keys held by you or a third-party custodian. You choose how keys are controlled and must account for custody, recovery, security, transfers, and transaction fees. Self-custody gives you control but makes you responsible for protecting access; a custodian adds provider dependence.
Spot Bitcoin ETP Shares of an exchange-traded product that holds Bitcoin and seeks to track its price. You need brokerage access to the product. Share prices can differ from Bitcoin’s price, and products generally charge sponsor fees. Check the specific product’s disclosures and fees.

The SEC describes spot Bitcoin ETPs as exchange-traded commodity trusts, not ETFs registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, even when a product uses “ETF” in its name or is commonly called one. Product availability, fees, and terms vary and can change. The ETP route removes the need to manage a Bitcoin wallet, but it does not remove exposure to Bitcoin’s price volatility.

How do you buy Bitcoin and hold it directly?

If you choose direct ownership, use a provider that serves your location and understand how it handles custody, purchases, withdrawals, and fees before committing funds. The practical sequence is:

  • Enhanced Backup Solution: Rest assured with Multi-share Backup, eliminating single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
  1. Choose custody before buying. Decide whether you will keep the private keys yourself or use a third-party custodian. Review the provider’s custody arrangements, security practices, withdrawal rules, and applicable fees.
  2. Buy through a service you have researched. Confirm the amount, transaction costs, and how to withdraw Bitcoin if you plan to move it to your own wallet. Do not assume a displayed account balance means you control the private keys.
  3. If self-custodying, set up a wallet and back it up. Follow the wallet maker’s instructions to create the wallet and securely record its recovery phrase. Keep the phrase private and separate from the device where practical.
  4. Verify the receiving address before transferring. Send only to an address for the correct asset and network, and check the address carefully. A transaction sent to the wrong destination may not be recoverable.
  5. Keep records. Save transaction details and fees for your own records and any tax reporting that applies where you live.

Buying through a service and moving Bitcoin to a personal wallet are separate actions. A transfer can involve fees, and custody or withdrawal terms depend on the provider.

Should you keep Bitcoin with a provider or in your own wallet?

Custody determines who controls the private keys needed to authorize transactions. With self-custody, you control them; with third-party custody, the provider controls or manages them, so you depend on that provider for access and service.

Self-custody

Self-custody gives you direct control, but also puts key security, backups, and recovery on you. A wallet is software or a device that manages keys; it does not contain Bitcoin itself. The private key authorizes transactions, while a public key supports receiving and verifying them. A recovery or seed phrase can restore access, so anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated wallet.

SEC staff advises never sharing private keys or seed phrases, researching providers before using them, and protecting online accounts with strong passwords and multi-factor authentication. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance also says, “You should be wary of any service designed to hold your money online,” and recommends backups and secure passwords: Bitcoin.org wallet security guidance.

Third-party custody

A custodian may make access and transactions more convenient, but you rely on its security, policies, and continued ability to provide service. Research how it safeguards assets, what account protections it offers, how withdrawals work, and what happens if you lose access to your account. Do not treat a provider’s custody as risk-free.

Hot wallet or cold storage?

A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which can make transactions convenient but increases exposure to online threats. Cold storage typically keeps keys offline, often using a physical device, and can reduce cyberthreat exposure. It cannot prevent loss through physical damage, theft, or misplacement. A hardware wallet is one option for self-custody, not a guarantee of safety: the recovery phrase and backup process still matter.

  • Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
  • Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
  • Keep recovery phrases secret; do not enter them in response to unsolicited messages or share them with support staff.
  • Make a backup and store it somewhere secure and accessible to you if the original device is unavailable.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for any online account involved.
  • Be cautious with services that hold keys online, and understand the limited recovery options if you forget a wallet password.

Losing a private key or recovery phrase without a usable backup can permanently prevent access to the associated Bitcoin. A device can be replaced; access cannot necessarily be restored without the keys or recovery material.

What if you want Bitcoin exposure without managing a wallet?

A spot Bitcoin ETP may suit someone who wants brokerage-based exposure and does not want to safeguard private keys or a recovery phrase. It is a share in a product that holds Bitcoin and seeks to track its price, not Bitcoin held directly in your personal wallet. Read the product’s current disclosures for sponsor fees, risks, and how closely its share price has tracked the underlying Bitcoin. Brokerage access and product terms can vary by jurisdiction.

What should you know about taxes?

For U.S. tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets such as Bitcoin as property. It says digital-asset income is taxable and some transactions must be reported; a simple purchase followed by continued holding is not itself a sale. Tax consequences depend on what you do with the asset and your circumstances. Keep transaction records and consult current IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional for your situation: IRS digital assets guidance. This is a U.S.-specific summary, not tax advice for other countries.
