The limit sets your price ceiling; it does not guarantee that the order will execute.
What you need before placing an order
You cannot buy shares directly from an exchange. The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) says, “An investor cannot directly buy or sell shares on a stock exchange”; an investor places an order through a registered broker, which routes it to the exchange. See NSE’s account-opening guidance.

Before trading, have the required accounts and setup in place. NSE’s Getting Started guide, updated February 16, 2026, lists a PAN, bank account, Demat account, SEBI-registered broker, completed KYC and broker-client agreement among the core requirements. Your broker’s process and account interface may differ.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm your trading account and Demat account are active and linked as required by the broker.
- Use the broker’s official app or website to add funds, then check the available balance and any charges shown before placing the order.
Find the correct BHEL listing
Search for “BHEL” in the broker’s order ticket and verify the issuer name and exchange before proceeding. An NSE filing identifies the security as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, symbol BHEL, scrip code 500103, ISIN INE257A01026, class Equity. The identifiers appear in the NSE filing for BHEL, filed July 16, 2026.

- Easy to read text
- It can be a gift option
BHEL is listed on more than one exchange, and broker search results can include different products. Select the intended exchange and the cash/equity share product—not a derivative. If you intend to hold shares, choose the broker’s delivery or equivalent product rather than intraday; labels vary by platform.
Place a BHEL buy limit order
- Open the verified BHEL equity instrument in your broker’s official platform and select Buy.
- Enter the number of shares you want to purchase.
- Choose Limit as the order type and enter your maximum acceptable price per share.
- Review the exchange, product type, quantity, limit price, estimated total, charges and order duration or time-in-force.
- Submit the order, then check its status, filled quantity, remaining quantity and expiry in the order book.
NSE defines a limit order as “An order that allows the price to be specified while entering the order into the system.” Its Trading System page was updated February 28, 2024. For a buy limit, the entered price is the most you agree to pay per share, not a promise that the exchange will find a seller.

What happens if the limit order does not execute?
In NSE’s order-driven market, the highest buy bid and lowest sell offer are the best available prices on their respective sides. A buy limit can match with sellers willing to sell at your price or lower, but there may not be enough available quantity. The order can remain open or fill only partly. Matching uses price priority and then time priority, and a trade can occur at the passive order’s price.

Check the order duration selected in the ticket. NSE describes a DAY order as expiring at the end of the trading day if it remains unfilled. Its Trading System page said GTC/GTD orders were unavailable on the NSE system as of its February 28, 2024 update; broker options and exchange rules can change, so verify the current ticket and order status rather than assuming an order stays active.

If your broker permits, you may be able to edit or cancel an open order. A cancellation does not reverse shares already bought: after a partial fill, only the unexecuted remainder may be cancelled.
Limit order versus market order
| Order type | Price control | Execution trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Buy limit | Sets the maximum price per share | May remain unfilled or partly filled if sellers are not available at that price or lower |
| Buy market | No user-set maximum price | Seeks the best price available when entered; the execution price can differ from the last displayed quote |
Neither the last traded price nor a displayed quote guarantees the price or availability at the moment your order reaches the market. Quotes and available quantities change continuously. Use the broker’s current quote and order book to make your own price decision; this guide does not assess whether BHEL is a suitable investment.

Keep your broker account secure
Use only the official app or website of a SEBI-registered broker. NSE’s investor advisory warns about fake trading platforms, requests to share credentials, guaranteed-return claims and offers to handle an investor’s account. Do not share your password, OTP or login credentials, and do not give an unofficial intermediary access to your account.
