Argentina’s official guidance says foreigners may obtain a card at authorized SUBE points by paying the applicable charge: Argentina.gob.ar’s SUBE information answers “Sí” to whether a foreigner can get one at an enabled collection center. Check the official information and confirm local stock and the current charge before making a special trip; prices can change.

The listed terms accessed October 4, 2026, showed ARS 1,500 for pickup at a SUBE service center, ARS 8,943 for pickup at a post office branch, and ARS 9,996 for home delivery. These are a dated price snapshot, not a guaranteed quote. Check the live terms, payment options, timing, and whether the pickup or delivery location fits your itinerary. The available guidance does not establish that checkout works from every country or with every payment method. Cards bought online are not delivered registered.

Whether and how to register the card
Registration is useful for account management, but the cited pages describe its benefits and processes rather than establishing a universal requirement for visitors to buy or use a card. According to the SUBE registration FAQ, an account can help recover a balance if a card is lost or broken, view trips and discounts, access Tarifa Social if eligible, carry out online account operations, and receive transport information.

The passport question is unresolved in the official guidance reviewed
The official pages reviewed do not clearly say whether a short-term visitor without an Argentine DNI can register online using a passport, or which foreign identity fields the live form accepts. They also do not establish that passport registration is impossible. Do not rely on an assumption either way: if recovering a lost balance is important, ask SUBE support about the current requirements before depending on registration. The FAQ lists 0800-777-SUBE (7823), option 3.
Registration methods and the final card update
The FAQ lists registration with the card number and personal details through the official form, by phone, at a service center with an identity document, or in the Android app. The registration terms say online registration has no age restriction and app registration is available from age 13. The terms also describe completing or updating registration by presenting the card at an automatic terminal, using NFC in the SUBE app, or using an onboard process where enabled. Check the current instructions for the route you choose, including whether you can complete the card-update step.

Loading and using the balance
An electronic load may need to be credited to the physical card before it is available to spend. A government notice dated July 22, 2026, lists the SUBE app, digital wallets, home banking, and ATMs as electronic loading options. It says users can credit a load using NFC in the Android app, Carga a Bordo onboard where supported, or a SUBE automatic terminal. The notice sets a maximum of ARS 30,000 per electronic load and a maximum card balance of ARS 40,000; these limits may change.

The official SUBE FAQ says the balance does not expire and describes acceptance in 61 localities, including on buses, subways, trains, metrobuses, trolleybuses, and boats. Coverage is not a blanket guarantee for every place or service in Argentina: confirm that your destination and specific transport service participate in SUBE.

Discounts are not automatic for tourists
Tarifa Social Federal is for eligible beneficiary groups, not a general visitor discount. The official Tarifa Social information describes a 55% discount against the reference fare it identifies as current to June 30, 2026, for qualifying categories, with the benefit attached to the person’s principal SUBE card. Registering a card alone does not make a tourist eligible, and the percentage and fare basis are time-sensitive.
