To redeem a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 game download code, open Nintendo eShop, choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game, select Enter Code, and submit the 16-character code. You can also redeem online at ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ after that account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch console at least once.

The important decisions happen before you type anything: buy the correct product, match its region to your Nintendo Account country, and make sure you are signed in to the account that should receive the entitlement. A retailer download code, an eShop Card and a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher are different products with different rules.

What a Nintendo Switch game download code buys

A retailer game download code is a code for particular Nintendo Switch software or downloadable content. The code may be printed on a card or shown on a receipt. After successful redemption, the game or DLC is attached to the Nintendo Account used during redemption, rather than becoming transferable to another account.

Retailers decide whether a code is delivered digitally or printed, which titles are stocked and what price is charged. Availability and purchasing methods also vary by country. Nintendo’s support instructions cover Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, but they do not establish a universal retailer list or a single worldwide price.

#1 Best Overall

Before buying, confirm that the product listing is for the platform and software you want, and read whether it provides a code for the full game or for downloadable content. A game code and a DLC code are not interchangeable: each unlocks the software identified by that code. Retailer listings can also differ in delivery format, so check whether the code will appear on a receipt, arrive digitally, or come on a physical card. Keep the purchase confirmation until the code has redeemed successfully.

Do not confuse three code-like products

Product What it provides Main restrictions Best fit
Retailer game download code A named game or specified DLC The Nintendo Account country/eShop region must match the game’s region. The code is redeemed to the account you use. You already know which game or add-on you want.
Nintendo eShop Card Funds added to an account balance It is not a code for a particular game. The balance is then spent on an eligible eShop purchase. You want to choose the game later or need to add funds.
Nintendo Switch Game Voucher One eligible game from Nintendo’s current voucher list An active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required; the voucher is limited to the purchasing account and expires one year after purchase. You have a qualifying membership and want a title on the eligible-games list.

Check the current title eligibility and regional terms before buying a Game Voucher. Voucher eligibility, redemption options and available products can change by country.

The choice depends on what you already know and what you have in hand. If you want one specific game and have found a retailer selling a matching code, that code is the direct route. If you would rather decide later, an eShop Card adds spendable funds instead. A voucher only makes sense when the intended game appears on Nintendo’s eligible list and the account that bought it meets the membership requirement.

Before you buy: the checks that prevent most failures

Confirm the exact product

Read the listing or card carefully. A game download code should identify the software or DLC it unlocks. An eShop Card instead identifies a monetary value, and a Game Voucher identifies a voucher product rather than one permanently named game. If you need a specific title, do not assume that an eShop Card or voucher is interchangeable with a game code.

Check the terms before paying, especially if you are buying a gift. A game code is redeemed to the account that enters it, so the recipient should redeem it on their own account if they are meant to own the game. For a voucher, the account restriction is even more specific: Nintendo says it can only be redeemed on the account that purchased the voucher. Do not assume that passing a voucher to another person lets them redeem it.

Match the code’s region to your account

Nintendo states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” The eShop country follows the country setting on your Nintendo Account. For example, a code intended for the Americas will not redeem through a Japan-region account/eShop.

Check the code’s stated market and the country configured on the Nintendo Account before paying. Changing account-country settings can affect access to funds, memberships and purchase history, so do not change the country casually just to force a code to work.

Choose the account that should own the game

Entitlements are assigned to the Nintendo Account used when the code is redeemed. On a shared console, identify the person who should own the purchase before opening eShop. Selecting a different user later does not move the entitlement to that other account.

Know what the seller supplies

Retailer codes can appear on a receipt or on a card. Some cards show both a control number and a download code. Nintendo’s instructions say to enter the download code, not the control number. Keep the receipt and card until redemption succeeds; they may be needed if the seller must investigate an activation problem.

How to redeem a download code on Nintendo eShop

The console method works on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. You need an internet connection, a Nintendo Account linked to the selected console user, and a code that is valid for that account’s eShop region.

$50 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop
  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.
  1. Connect to the internet. Confirm that the console is online before opening the store.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME Menu, select the orange Nintendo eShop icon.
  3. Select the receiving user. Choose the Nintendo Account that should own the game or DLC. Stop here if the displayed user is not the intended owner.
  4. Open the code-entry screen. In eShop, choose Enter Code.
  5. Enter the code exactly as printed. Type the 16-character download code. If the card includes a control number and a download code, use the download code.
  6. Confirm the title and redeem. Review the software shown by eShop, then confirm the redemption. If the title, region or account looks wrong, cancel before submitting.
  7. Wait for the download. The game icon should appear on the HOME Menu with a download-status bar. Leave the console connected until the download finishes, or resume it later from HOME if the connection is interrupted.

What to verify on the confirmation screen

  • The displayed game or DLC is the item you intended to buy.
  • The selected user is the Nintendo Account that should retain the entitlement.
  • The eShop is set to the country/region required by the code.

Pause before the final confirmation if anything does not line up. The confirmation screen is your chance to catch the wrong title or the wrong receiving account; completing redemption on another account does not transfer the purchase to the account you meant to use.

How to redeem a Nintendo eShop download code online

Nintendo also provides a browser redemption flow at https://ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/. The Nintendo Account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once before online redemption is available.

  1. Open Nintendo’s redemption page. Visit ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ in a browser.
  2. Sign in to the intended Nintendo Account. Check the account name carefully. This is the account that will receive the game.
  3. Enter the code. Nintendo’s online instructions describe entering the 16-digit code. Use the exact sequence printed by the retailer, without substituting a control number.
  4. Continue to the confirmation step. Review the product and account information shown by Nintendo.
  5. Re-enter your account password if requested. This additional sign-in check confirms the account making the redemption.
  6. Select Redeem. Submit the code only after verifying the title and account.
  7. Check your email. Nintendo says it sends a confirmation email after a successful online redemption.

If the account has never opened eShop on a Switch console, complete that first, then return to the browser redemption page. Online redemption does not bypass regional restrictions or change which account owns the software.

The online option is useful when you are on a computer or phone and do not want to enter the code on the console. It does not remove the account prerequisite: the account must already have accessed eShop on a Switch or Switch 2. If you cannot complete the browser flow, first make sure you are signing into the intended account and that it has met that requirement; then use the console method if the console is available.

What happens after redemption

A successful console redemption places the game icon on HOME and starts or queues its download. The title is associated with the Nintendo Account selected during redemption. On a console with several users, other users may be able to play software subject to Nintendo’s normal primary-console and account rules, but the purchase itself remains recorded under the redeeming account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an online redemption, use the confirmation email and the account’s eShop purchase history as records of the transaction. If the game does not immediately appear, check that the console is online and that you are viewing HOME under the same console where the account is linked.

Keep the original receipt, card or retailer confirmation even after you submit the code, at least until you can verify the game or DLC is recorded in the right account’s purchase history. This gives you the purchase details to share if the retailer needs to investigate an activation or sale issue. If the code was meant as a gift, tell the recipient which account should redeem it, rather than entering it yourself and expecting to move the entitlement later.

Download-code troubleshooting

1. The code is rejected immediately

  • Re-enter every character slowly. Check commonly confused characters and make sure no spaces or extra punctuation were added.
  • On a card with two numbers, enter the download code rather than the control number.
  • Confirm that you are using the correct Nintendo Account and that its eShop country matches the game’s region.

Nintendo’s regional rule is strict: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” An Americas code, for example, cannot be redeemed through a Japan-region eShop.

2. The code appears to have been used

Open the Nintendo Account’s eShop purchase history and look for the game or DLC. If the item is listed, the code has already been redeemed on that account. Also check other Nintendo Accounts that may have been used on the console; a code redeemed to a different account will not appear in the intended account’s history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If purchase history does not show the item, retain the receipt and card and ask the retailer to investigate the code’s activation or sale. For a non-Nintendo game, Nintendo advises contacting the publisher identified on the card or game case when the publisher is responsible for the code.

  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

3. The game has not been released yet

Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance notes that an unreleased game can produce an error when you try to redeem its code early. Check the title’s announced release timing and try again after release. This is different from an invalid or already-used code.

4. You are worried that a retailer code expired

Nintendo’s current support guidance says retailer-purchased game or DLC download codes do not expire. Keep that statement limited to those retailer software/DLC codes: it does not establish the same rule for promotional codes, other code types or Game Vouchers. A Game Voucher expires one year from purchase.

5. The code still will not work

  1. Take a screenshot or note the exact error message.
  2. Recheck the code type, account country and selected Nintendo Account.
  3. Review purchase history for the title.
  4. Ask the retailer about activation, region and replacement policies, using your receipt as proof of purchase.
  5. For a publisher-issued code, contact the publisher named on the card or packaging.
  6. Escalate Nintendo-published software issues to Nintendo Support after completing the account, region and purchase-history checks.

Work through the checks in order rather than repeatedly submitting a code. First verify the characters and that you have the download code rather than a control number. Then check the region and account, and finally look at purchase history and release timing. Those checks distinguish a typing error from a region mismatch, an already-redeemed entitlement, or an early attempt for an unreleased game.

Buying and redeeming an eShop Card instead

An eShop Card adds funds to the Nintendo Account. It is useful when you want to choose a game directly in eShop or when the seller does not offer the specific download code you need. Nintendo’s purchasing instructions include entering the 16-character code from an eShop Card to add funds, then using that balance for an eShop purchase.

The process is therefore two transactions: redeem the card to add balance, then buy the game from eShop. An eShop Card does not directly unlock a named game, and its value should not be treated as a substitute for a region-matched game code.

Choose this route when flexibility matters more than immediate access to one named title. If you already have a retailer code for the exact game, the eShop Card is a separate product and is not needed to redeem that code. If you are buying a card for someone else, check that it is suitable for the recipient’s account region before purchase.

How Game Vouchers differ

A Nintendo Switch Game Voucher can be exchanged for one title from Nintendo’s eligible-games list. It is not a general-purpose balance code and cannot be applied to any game you choose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You need an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • The voucher can be redeemed only by the Nintendo Account that purchased it.
  • It expires one year after purchase.
  • Eligible games and redemption options vary by title and region, so check Nintendo’s current list before purchasing or redeeming.

These restrictions make a voucher a poor choice if the recipient does not have the required membership, if the desired game is not eligible, or if the voucher will not be used within one year.

Unlike retailer-purchased software and DLC codes, which Nintendo says do not expire, a Game Voucher has a stated one-year term. Treat those rules separately when deciding whether to buy or redeem: the no-expiration guidance for retailer game codes does not extend to vouchers or other code types.

A practical decision guide

Your situation Use this route Check first
You have a receipt or card for one named game. Redeem the retailer download code. Account country, game region, code type and receiving account.
You want flexible spending credit. Redeem a Nintendo eShop Card, then purchase in eShop. That the card is intended for your account’s country/region.
You have paid Nintendo Switch Online and want an eligible title. Use a Game Voucher. Current eligible-games list, one-year expiry and purchasing account.
You are buying for another person. Use a code or card that matches the recipient’s account region and let the recipient redeem it. Do not redeem it on your own account unless you intend to keep the entitlement there.

Console or browser: which redemption method should you use?

Use the console flow when the Switch is nearby and you want the download to begin immediately on that device. It makes the receiving user visible before entry and shows the game icon on HOME after redemption.

Use the browser flow when you prefer a computer or phone. It requires the account to have opened eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 previously, requires an account-password confirmation during redemption, and sends a confirmation email. Both methods still enforce the same account and regional requirements.

Safe final checklist

  • Is this a game/DLC code, an eShop Card or a Game Voucher?
  • Does the code’s region match the Nintendo Account country?
  • Are you signed in to the account that should own the purchase?
  • Are you entering the download code rather than a control number?
  • Have you kept the receipt or card until the code succeeds?
  • If it is a voucher, is the title eligible, is paid Nintendo Switch Online active, and is the one-year validity period sufficient?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I redeem a Nintendo eShop download code online?

Go to ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/, sign in to the Nintendo Account that should receive the game, and enter the code. That account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once. Review the product and account, re-enter your password if prompted, then select Redeem. Nintendo says it sends a confirmation email after successful online redemption.

Can I redeem a download code on a different Nintendo Account later?

No. The game or DLC is attached to the account used when the code is redeemed. If the code is for someone else, let that person redeem it on the account that should own it. A later user selection does not transfer the entitlement.

Why does my Nintendo Switch download code say it is invalid?

Check that you entered the 16-character download code rather than a control number, then verify the Nintendo Account country and code region match. A code for the Americas, for example, cannot be redeemed through a Japan-region eShop. Also check whether the code was already redeemed or whether the game has not yet been released.

Do Nintendo Switch retailer game codes expire?

Nintendo’s current support guidance says retailer-purchased game or DLC download codes do not expire. That rule is specific to those software and DLC codes; do not apply it to every promotion or code type. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers expire one year after purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a download code and an eShop Card?

A retailer download code unlocks particular software or DLC. An eShop Card adds funds to an account balance, which you can then spend on an eShop purchase. The card does not redeem a named game directly.

Can I give my Nintendo Switch Game Voucher to someone else?

Nintendo says a Game Voucher can only be redeemed on the Nintendo Account that purchased it. It also requires an active, paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, applies only to a title on the current eligible-games list, and expires one year after purchase.

What should I do if Nintendo says my code has already been used?

Check the eShop purchase history for the Nintendo Account you used, then check other accounts that may have redeemed it. If the item is not listed, keep the receipt or card and contact the retailer about the code’s activation or sale. For some non-Nintendo games, contact the publisher identified on the card or packaging.

The Bottom Line

Before redeeming, confirm the product type, region and receiving Nintendo Account. Enter the 16-character download code—not a control number—through eShop’s Enter Code option or Nintendo’s online redemption page. Retailer game and DLC codes are distinct from eShop Cards and Game Vouchers, each of which has different restrictions.
