To buy a digital game, connect your Nintendo Switch to the internet, open Nintendo eShop with the user profile whose Nintendo Account should own the purchase, find the game, complete checkout with account funds or a supported payment method, and leave the console online. Nintendo says the download starts automatically after a successful purchase; you can watch its progress on the HOME Menu and launch the game when installation finishes.
The exact payment methods, gift-card compatibility, web-store access and menu wording depend on your country, account region and system software. Check those details before paying, because a purchase is managed by the Nintendo Account used to open eShop.

What you need before opening eShop
Have these prerequisites ready:
- A Nintendo Switch-family console with a working internet connection.
- A user profile linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- Enough free space in the console’s internal storage or an inserted microSD card. The game update may need additional space beyond the initial download.
- A balance or payment method accepted by the Nintendo eShop for your account’s country.
- Your Nintendo Account password or other sign-in verification, if Nintendo requests it during checkout.
The profile selection is not a cosmetic choice. Nintendo ties eShop purchases to the Nintendo Account used to enter the shop and complete payment. If several people use the console, stop at the user-selection screen and verify the account name before browsing.

Choose where to make the purchase
You can usually buy on the console itself. In some countries, Nintendo also supports purchasing through a web browser. These routes are not interchangeable everywhere.

| Question | Purchase on the Switch | Purchase in a browser |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Use the eShop available to your Nintendo Account’s country. | Nintendo’s Americas web-purchase FAQ lists Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. Availability outside those markets can differ. |
| Account requirement | Select the linked user when opening eShop. | The Nintendo Account must have opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once, according to Nintendo’s Americas FAQ. |
| Payment | Use existing funds, an accepted card or another locally supported option such as an eShop Card. | Payment choices depend on country. Nintendo says PayPal is available through this route only in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and a payment card must match the relevant country or store. |
| Delivery | The console starts downloading after checkout. | In supported Americas markets, you select the console that should receive the released game; Nintendo then sends it to that system automatically. |
If the web-store option is not listed for your country, buy through the console eShop rather than trying to work around the regional storefront.
Buy a game on the Switch: step-by-step
- Connect to the internet. From the HOME Menu, open your network settings and confirm that the console is online. Keep it connected during the download.
- Open Nintendo eShop. Select the orange shopping-bag icon on the HOME Menu, then choose the user profile whose linked Nintendo Account should own the purchase.
- Find the game. Use Search or browse the available categories. Open the product page and read the description, supported platform information, language or content notes shown there, price and any edition details before selecting the purchase button.
- Review the account and price. Confirm that the displayed account is the intended owner and that the total is in the expected local currency. Do not continue if the wrong user is selected; changing profiles after payment does not move ownership to another account.
- Select a payment method. Apply existing Nintendo Account funds first where the storefront supports that flow. If the balance is short, add the required amount with an accepted payment card or another local option. A Nintendo eShop Card can be redeemed to add funds when the card and account region are compatible.
- Confirm the purchase. Follow the on-screen authorization prompts and accept the final purchase confirmation only after checking the game, account and amount.
- Wait for the automatic download. Nintendo’s support instructions state: “The download will begin automatically, and you can check the download status on the HOME Menu.” Keep the console powered on or in a mode that permits downloading, and do not launch the game until installation has completed.
How payment and eShop funds work
Using an existing balance
If your Nintendo Account already has enough funds, checkout can use that balance. In the Americas console instructions, when the balance is insufficient, eShop can apply the current balance and ask you to add only the amount needed to finish the transaction. The precise screens and funding choices vary by country.
Paying with a card
Only payment cards supported by your local Nintendo storefront will work. The billing country or card country may need to match the Nintendo Account’s store region. A declined transaction does not necessarily mean the card is defective; region mismatch, a bank authorization issue or a storefront restriction can all produce the same result.
Redeeming a Nintendo eShop Card
An eShop Card is a prepaid way to add funds without entering a bank-card number at checkout. Redeem it through the eShop’s code-redemption option, then return to the game’s purchase page and pay from the updated balance. Check the card’s currency and country before buying. Nintendo’s support guidance warns that codes and payment instruments can be blocked when they do not match the account’s regional storefront.
Why the country setting matters
Your Nintendo Account country determines the storefront, currency, available payment methods and which prepaid codes are accepted. Do not assume a card bought in one country will work with an account registered in another. If you have recently changed account-country settings, review the balance and payment implications shown by Nintendo before attempting checkout.
Check the download and install the game
After confirmation, return to the HOME Menu. The game icon appears with a download indicator, and the HOME Menu shows progress. Select the icon or open the download-management view to see status, remaining activity and any error message offered by the system.
Download time depends on the size of the game and the speed and stability of your connection. A large title can take considerably longer than a small one. Avoid repeatedly canceling and restarting the transfer; leave the Switch connected and let the installation finish. Once the icon no longer shows an active download and the system allows launch, select it from HOME Menu.

Before buying a large game, open the console’s data-management settings and check available space. Internal storage may be enough for one title but not for several games and their updates. A compatible microSD card is optional, not mandatory, but it can provide additional capacity when the system’s free space is low.

Reserve room for patches and downloadable updates. Nintendo notes that updates can require space in addition to the original software, so having only the exact listed download size can still lead to an installation failure.
Buy from Nintendo’s website when your country supports it
Nintendo’s Americas web-store FAQ describes a browser route for direct digital purchases. It requires the Nintendo Account to have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once. The FAQ names Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States as supported countries; the list is not a guarantee of availability in every other region.
- Sign in to the official Nintendo Store with the same Nintendo Account used on the console.
- Open the game’s product page and verify the edition, price, country and any platform qualification.
- Choose the console designated to receive the game when the store presents that choice.
- Pay with a method offered for your country. Nintendo says PayPal is available for this web flow in the United States, Canada and Mexico; other countries may show different options.
- Complete the order and leave the selected console connected to the internet. In the supported Americas flow, released games are sent to that console automatically.
If your card is issued in a different country from the store, the transaction may be refused. Switching to a different browser or device will not remove a country restriction.

The Nintendo Account, rather than the physical Switch itself, is the key record for a digital purchase. The user you select when entering eShop identifies the account that pays and receives the purchase record. On a shared console, another profile may be able to use software under Nintendo’s current console-authority arrangements, but that does not make the other profile the purchaser or move the license.
Country settings affect more than currency. They determine which storefront you see, which payment instruments Nintendo offers, and whether an eShop Card or downloadable code can be redeemed. A card purchased abroad can fail even when the number was entered correctly. Check the country printed on the card and compare it with the account’s current store region before opening the package.
Web purchasing adds a console-selection step. The browser account must previously have accessed eShop on a Switch or Switch 2, and the store may ask which registered console should receive the released title. Verify that selection carefully; completing checkout on a phone or computer does not by itself install the game on every Switch associated with you.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The wrong user or account is selected
Cancel before payment and reopen eShop with the correct profile. Digital ownership follows the Nintendo Account that completed checkout, not the person who happened to hold the controller or the console owner. Nintendo does not treat a later profile change as a transfer of the purchase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAn eShop Card or code does not work
- Confirm that the code is for the same country or regional storefront as the Nintendo Account.
- Check each character carefully and enter the code through the eShop redemption screen rather than the wrong Nintendo service.
- Make sure the code has not already been redeemed. If the error persists, retain the receipt and use Nintendo’s support process for the country where the card was sold.
The payment card is declined
Verify the card’s country, billing details and available funds, then check whether that payment type is offered by your local eShop. A card that works for ordinary online shopping can still be rejected by a regional Nintendo storefront. If a prepaid card is easier, use an eShop Card purchased for the account’s region.

The download is slow or appears stuck
- Open the HOME Menu and check the game’s download status rather than starting the title repeatedly.
- Confirm that the Switch still has an internet connection and is not displaying a network error.
- Check free storage, including space needed for an update.
- Allow more time for a large download on a slow connection. Nintendo specifically notes that download duration depends on the connection.
- Restart the network connection or console only after noting any displayed error, then resume the download and check its status again.
The purchase completed but the game is not visible
Check the HOME Menu and the purchasing account’s software list while the console is online. If the transaction was made in a browser, confirm that the intended console was selected and that the title has been released. A pre-release order or a title awaiting release will not behave like an immediately playable game.
Redownload a game you bought previously
Use the Nintendo Account that made the original purchase. Nintendo’s current Japanese support guidance directs eligible redownloads through Virtual Game Cards, while purchase records are available from the Nintendo Account website. The exact menu names can differ by country and system update, so follow the options shown on your console rather than an older screenshot.
- Sign in to the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Open the system’s Virtual Game Cards or software-redownload area.
- Choose the previously purchased title and the Switch console that should receive it, if the system asks.
- Start the redownload and monitor it from the HOME Menu.
A missing title can indicate that a different Nintendo Account originally bought it. Check account purchase records before buying the game again.
Recent Virtual Game Card guidance
Nintendo Japan’s account guidance says eligible software redownloads moved to Virtual Game Cards on April 30, 2025. That change does not mean every title or every regional menu is identical. If an older guide tells you to use a menu that is no longer shown, open the current Virtual Game Cards or software-redownload option and follow the prompts for the account that owns the purchase.
Important ownership and console considerations
Purchasing a digital game gives the purchasing Nintendo Account the relevant usage rights under Nintendo’s account and store rules. Other profiles on the same console may be able to use software under Nintendo’s current console-authority arrangements, but they do not become the purchasing account. Keep login credentials secure and do not complete a purchase from a shared profile unless that is the account you intend to charge.
When using the web store, carefully identify the receiving console. A browser purchase is not a license to download indiscriminately to every Switch you own; the supported flow asks you to designate a system. If your account or console setup has changed, review Nintendo’s current transfer and Virtual Game Card options before assuming a prior purchase will appear automatically.

A browser can be convenient when Nintendo offers direct web purchasing in your country, but it does not bypass account or regional requirements. In the Americas, the account must have opened eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once, and the web store supports direct purchases in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. The listed countries are a specific Nintendo FAQ list, not a worldwide guarantee.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Internet connection tested on the Switch.
- Correct user profile and linked Nintendo Account selected.
- Game edition, platform and price checked on the product page.
- Account balance, payment card or region-matched eShop Card ready.
- Enough free internal or microSD storage for the game and likely updates.
- Console identified if buying through a supported Nintendo web store.
- Download status checked from HOME Menu after payment.
What to expect after a successful purchase
The normal sequence is straightforward: checkout completes, the title begins downloading automatically, progress appears on HOME Menu, installation finishes, and the new icon becomes launchable. The variables that most often change that sequence are country restrictions, a different purchasing account, insufficient storage, an unstable connection or a game that has not reached its release date. Checking those conditions before payment prevents most avoidable failures.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy a Nintendo Switch game from my phone?
Only where Nintendo supports direct web purchases. In the Americas FAQ, the listed countries are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. Your Nintendo Account must have opened eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once, and you must select the console that should receive the released game.
Which account owns the digital game?
The Nintendo Account linked to the user profile that enters eShop and completes checkout owns the purchase record. Selecting a different profile later does not transfer ownership, so verify the account name before paying on a shared console.
Why is my Nintendo eShop Card not working?
The card or code may belong to a different country or storefront than your Nintendo Account. Check the card’s region and currency, enter every character carefully in the eShop redemption screen, and confirm that the code has not already been used. Keep the receipt if Nintendo support is needed.
Does a Switch game download automatically after purchase?
Yes. Nintendo says the download begins automatically after a completed purchase. Check its progress on the HOME Menu, keep the console connected to the internet, and wait for installation to finish before launching.
How much storage do I need?
You need enough free internal or microSD storage for the game and additional space that an update may require. A microSD card is optional, but useful when internal space is low. Check data-management settings before confirming a large purchase.
Can I use a payment card from another country?
Usually not if it does not match the Nintendo Account’s store region. Nintendo’s payment guidance warns that regional restrictions can block cards and codes. Payment choices also vary by country; in the Americas web flow, PayPal is listed only for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Sign in with the Nintendo Account that made the purchase and open the current Virtual Game Cards or software-redownload area. Nintendo Japan’s guidance says eligible redownloads use Virtual Game Cards, while purchase records are available on the Nintendo Account website. Menu labels vary by region and system update.
What should I do if the download looks stuck?
Check download status from the HOME Menu, confirm the internet connection, verify available storage including update space, and allow more time for a large title on a slow connection. Note any displayed error before restarting the network or console and resuming the download.
The Bottom Line
For the smoothest purchase, choose the correct Nintendo Account first, verify the game’s details and regional payment compatibility, check storage, and keep the Switch online after checkout. The download should start automatically, while web purchases and redownloads depend on country, account history, selected console and Nintendo’s current menu system.
