Yes, you can import an HMD or Nokia phone safely—but only if you treat the purchase as a compatibility, legal-compliance, tax and after-sales decision. Buy through an HMD-authorized channel in your country whenever one exists. If the model is unavailable locally, verify the exact regional model, carrier bands, unlocked status, local certification, IMEI rules, total landed cost, return route and warranty coverage before paying.
A low overseas price is not a bargain if the phone cannot register on your network, is blocked by a regulator, attracts unexpected taxes or must be shipped abroad for warranty service.

Why an imported HMD or Nokia phone can fail after you pay
“Unlocked” describes only the device’s carrier lock. It does not guarantee that the phone supports your country’s 4G or 5G bands, VoLTE requirements, emergency-call rules, charger standards or telecom certification. A phone can accept your SIM and still have poor coverage, no voice service or no legal permission to operate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImporting also changes who is responsible when something goes wrong. The local retailer, local consumer-protection law and nearby service center may not cover a device intended for another market. HMD’s manufacturer warranty is generally tied to the country or region in which an authorized sale occurred, so an overseas purchase may leave you dealing with the original seller or an international repair route.

Use the following workflow before you send payment. Keep evidence at every stage; it is often more valuable than a small discount.
1. Check whether the model is officially supported locally
Start with HMD’s own country pages
Check the HMD country store, support pages and care-center information first. HMD describes its support channel as the authorized customer-support channel for HMD and Nokia-branded phones and tablets manufactured by Human Mobile Devices. An official local listing normally gives you the clearest answer on availability, local warranty and repair options.
If the model does not appear in your country, contact HMD support before ordering. Ask, in writing, whether the exact model code can be serviced in your country, whether software support is provided for that regional variant, and whether a local care center will accept a warranty claim. A general answer about the product family is not enough.

A listing from an overseas marketplace may be genuine parallel import stock, refurbished stock, or a counterfeit. “International version” is not a standardized technical term. Require the model number, region, storage capacity, SIM configuration and seller’s legal identity before treating the listing as a serious option.
2. Identify the exact regional variant
Record the following details from the listing and ask the seller to confirm them on the invoice:
- Full model code, not just the family name.
- Storage and memory configuration.
- Single-SIM or dual-SIM configuration, including whether both IMEIs are present.
- Supported 2G, 3G, 4G LTE and 5G bands.
- VoLTE and, where relevant, Wi-Fi calling support.
- Software region, supported languages and update channel.
- Charger plug, voltage rating and included accessories.
- Whether the device is factory-unlocked and whether any foreign-provider financing or activation lock remains.
Two phones with the same retail name can have different radios, firmware and certification numbers. Save a screenshot or PDF of the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact code you are buying. If the seller will not disclose the code, stop the transaction.
3. Match the phone to your carrier
Compare every required band
Obtain the bands used by each carrier you may use, including low-frequency coverage bands and capacity bands. Compare them with the exact variant’s specification sheet. A missing low band can reduce indoor and rural coverage even when a faster band works in cities.

Check 4G and 5G separately. A phone may support a carrier’s 5G frequency but lack the carrier’s required 4G anchor band. In that case, 5G availability can be limited or the device may fall back to an incompatible network.
Confirm VoLTE and network shutdown implications
Many networks now require Voice over LTE for calls, including emergency calls. Verify that the model is approved for VoLTE on your carrier, not merely that the hardware lists LTE. Ask the carrier whether imported firmware or an unrecognized model identifier prevents VoLTE provisioning. If your country has retired or is retiring 2G or 3G, a phone that relies on those networks for voice is a particularly poor import choice.

Check the unlock status in writing
Ask whether the phone is factory-unlocked, whether an overseas provider supplied it, and whether any installment balance or activation restriction exists. A provider may need to perform the unlock, and Anatel’s consumer guidance specifically tells buyers of phones acquired abroad to check the manufacturer’s information for local-frequency compatibility and to arrange unlocking with the foreign provider or seller when necessary.
4. Verify local certification and IMEI requirements
Telecom approval and IMEI registration are separate checks. Certification concerns whether the radio device is permitted in the country; IMEI registration concerns whether a particular device identifier may use the mobile network. Complete both checks before ordering.

Brazil: Anatel homologation
Brazil’s Anatel says homologated mobile phones undergo testing for safety, radio-frequency emissions, interoperability, batteries and chargers. Homologated products carry an identification number. Anatel recommends that consumers acquire phones that have passed its homologation process and warns that imported, non-homologated models may be inspected or unable to activate.
For a Brazilian import, ask the seller for the Anatel identification number and verify that it belongs to the exact model variant. Do not assume that a homologated product family covers every radio version sold abroad.
Indonesia: IMEI registration and import charges
Indonesia’s Directorate General of Customs and Excise states that phones brought or shipped from abroad must have their IMEI registered to obtain Indonesian cellular service. Its published passenger-import example lists a 10% import duty and 12% VAT, with a USD500 personal-goods deduction under the cited rules. These figures are an example of the current guidance, not a universal rate for every shipment or traveler; confirm the treatment that applies to your entry method, value and device count.
Before travel or delivery, find out who submits the IMEI declaration, which documents are required and whether registration must occur within a deadline. A phone can be authentic and carrier-compatible yet remain without cellular service until this process is completed.

Egypt’s National Telecom Regulatory Authority instructs buyers to verify the 15-digit IMEI in the Telephony app, obtain a tax invoice and check that a new device meets internationally approved technical specifications. It warns that non-compliant devices can be blocked. Record every IMEI on a dual-SIM phone and confirm that the result matches the exact device you will receive.
Other countries
Search your telecom regulator for “type approval,” “homologation,” “device registration” and “IMEI.” Then check the customs authority for declarations, duty, VAT or GST, brokerage and personal-import limits. Rules can change quickly, and the Brazil, Indonesia and Egypt examples do not establish the law in another country.
5. Verify the seller and the device identity
Prefer traceable sellers
Choose an HMD-authorized retailer in the destination country whenever possible. For an import, prefer a seller that provides a legal business name, a tax invoice, a physical return address and written terms for defective goods. A seller who refuses to disclose the exact model or return route is not worth the risk of a modest saving.

Request identifiers before dispatch
Where lawful, ask for a photograph of the label or settings screen showing the model and IMEI before the device ships. HMD provides an IMEI/PSN warranty checker that requires the device identifier and location. Use it before paying and again when the phone arrives.
On a dual-SIM phone, verify every IMEI. Each identifier should match the box, settings screen and invoice. A mismatch can indicate a substituted device, altered packaging or an invoice that will not support a warranty claim.
Check national and international identity lists
Use your country’s official IMEI registry when one exists. The International Telecommunication Union’s 2026 equipment-identity guidance describes permitted, tracked and blocked lists for irregular or counterfeit equipment. A clean-looking listing or a single database result is not proof that the device will remain permitted after activation; retain screenshots of the checks and the date performed.
6. Calculate the real landed cost
Compare the imported phone with a locally supported alternative only after adding every likely cost:
| Cost item | What to include | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | Device price, seller fees and payment conversion | Foreign-currency conversion can change the final amount. |
| Shipping and insurance | International freight, optional insurance and signature service | Claims may be difficult if the parcel is lost or damaged. |
| Customs charges | Import duty, VAT/GST, brokerage and handling | Rates depend on country, value, shipment method and personal-import rules. |
| Compliance costs | Certification, IMEI registration or local inspection fees | A device may not receive cellular service until paid and registered. |
| After-sales costs | Return postage, insurance and possible overseas repair shipping | International returns can erase the initial saving. |
| Accessories | Approved charger, plug adapter and replacement parts | Incorrect chargers or unavailable parts add safety and reliability risks. |
Use the total, not the sticker price, for your decision. Treat promotional prices, one-time allowances and tax exemptions as conditional. For example, Indonesia’s USD500 deduction in the cited passenger-import example is not a promise that every imported phone will receive that treatment.

Understand HMD’s geographic warranty language
HMD Global Oy’s 2024 Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty states: This Warranty is only applicable in the country or region where the Product was purchased through Manufacturer’s authorised sales channels, provided that the Product was intended for sale in that country or region.
The same warranty says: The Warranty period starts on the date the Product is sold to an end user for the first time, as evidenced by the original proof of purchase, or a similar document approved by the Manufacturer, which matches with the Product activation.
It specifies twelve (12) months for the product and six (6) months for included accessories in the covered country or region.
Those terms mean an imported phone may not have local manufacturer warranty service even if it is genuine. Ask HMD and the seller to confirm coverage for the exact model and purchase country before payment; keep the original proof of purchase because activation and warranty dates may be compared.
Ask who handles each failure
Get written answers to these questions:
- Is the warranty provided by HMD, the seller or both?
- Where is the authorized repair center?
- Who pays outbound and return shipping?
- Is a replacement shipped to your country?
- What happens if the phone is dead on arrival?
- How many days do you have to report a defect?
- Does local consumer law apply to this sale?
Save the seller’s answers with the listing, invoice and payment record. Verbal promises made in a chat that disappears after delivery are difficult to enforce.

8. Keep a complete evidence file
Create one folder before ordering and save:
- Product-page URL and screenshots showing the model and promised condition.
- Seller identity, address, support contact and return policy.
- Invoice, payment confirmation and shipping documents.
- Model number, serial number and every IMEI.
- Band list, VoLTE statement and software-region information.
- Certification or homologation number.
- IMEI-check results and registration receipts.
- Written warranty and repair answers.
This file helps with customs, carrier activation, payment disputes and warranty claims. It also lets you prove what was promised if the seller sends a different regional variant.
9. Inspect and test the phone immediately
- Photograph the unopened parcel, shipping label, box seals and IMEI labels before opening.
- Compare the box model and IMEI with the invoice and the device settings.
- Check for signs of resealing, used accessories, scratches or a different charger.
- Run the HMD warranty checker with the device identifier and your location.
- Install your SIM or eSIM and test registration, calls, SMS, mobile data, VoLTE and emergency calling according to local rules.
- Test every supported band where practical by checking the carrier’s network-information screen or diagnostic menu.
- Apply official software updates and confirm language, region and date settings.
- Test both SIM slots, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, charging and battery behavior.
- Complete any required customs or IMEI registration before relying on the phone.
- Report a mismatch or defect within the seller’s stated return period, using photographs and the saved evidence file.
Do not remove protective films or discard packaging until the identity, activation and return checks are complete.
Imported phone or local alternative: a practical comparison
| Decision factor | Imported HMD or Nokia phone | Locally supported phone |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost | Purchase price plus shipping, tax, compliance and possible overseas returns | Usually clearer at checkout; local taxes are normally included or disclosed |
| Network fit | Must be checked against the exact regional model and carrier requirements | Typically selected for local bands and certification |
| IMEI and certification | Buyer may need to declare, register or prove compliance | Usually handled before retail sale |
| Warranty route | May depend on the foreign seller or foreign service center | Local retailer, manufacturer channel and consumer-law remedies may be available |
| Return logistics | International postage, customs paperwork and longer delays | Domestic return address and simpler tracking |
| Variant choice | May provide access to a model unavailable locally | Limited to models officially introduced in the country |
Choose the import only when the exact variant passes the network and legal checks and the fully loaded cost still makes sense after assigning a realistic value to local support.
Example: Nokia 105 4G 2nd Edition
HMD’s official support catalog lists the Nokia 105 4G 2nd Edition. That listing confirms the product exists in the support catalog; it does not prove that a marketplace unit is authorized for your country. Before buying, verify the seller, regional model, supported bands, certification, IMEI process, invoice and warranty territory at checkout.
The same principle applies to accessories. HMD lists an HMD Charging Cradle, but compatibility depends on the exact phone and regional package. Confirm that the cradle is intended for your model before adding it to an import order.
Red flags that should stop the purchase
- The seller will not provide a model code or IMEI.
- The listing uses only “global,” “international” or “European” without technical specifications.
- The IMEI on the box, settings screen and invoice does not match.
- The price is far below comparable offers and the seller cannot explain why.
- The seller claims “worldwide warranty” but will not identify the repair country or shipping responsibility.
- The phone is described as unlocked but was originally financed by a foreign carrier.
- No tax invoice or legal return address is available.
- The device lacks the destination regulator’s approval or the seller says registration can be “fixed later.”
- The seller pressures you to pay outside the marketplace’s protected payment system.
What to do if the phone is blocked or incompatible
No network service after inserting the SIM
Check that the IMEI is correct, complete any required registration and ask the carrier to confirm VoLTE provisioning. Then compare the exact model’s bands with the carrier’s published requirements. Do not assume a factory reset will solve a missing band or a blocked identifier.
Customs or regulator refuses activation
Ask the authority for the precise reason, required documents and appeal or re-export procedure. Keep the invoice, payment proof, model code and IMEI evidence. Contact the seller immediately under the written return terms; some registration problems cannot be corrected after the return window closes.
Seller sends the wrong variant
Photograph the box and settings screen, avoid activating or modifying the device beyond what is necessary to document the mismatch, and open a return or payment dispute within the stated deadline. A different band variant is not an acceptable substitute merely because the retail name is similar.

Final buying checklist
- Confirm whether HMD has an authorized local channel and care center.
- Record the exact model code, radio bands, SIM configuration, software region and charger type.
- Confirm carrier bands, VoLTE and unlock status with the intended network.
- Check type approval, homologation and IMEI rules with the destination authorities.
- Calculate purchase, shipping, insurance, duty, VAT/GST, brokerage, registration and return costs.
- Verify the seller, invoice, return address and warranty responsibilities in writing.
- Run the HMD IMEI/PSN checker and any national IMEI registry before paying.
- Save every listing, identifier, certification record and written promise.
- Inspect, test and register the phone immediately on arrival.
If any one of these checks remains unanswered, the safe decision is to wait for a locally supported model or choose a seller that can provide the missing evidence.
