A used or refurbished phone can cost less upfront, but the asking price alone does not tell you whether it is a good buy. Before paying, check the IMEI, inspect the phone’s condition, identify who is actually selling it, and understand the return and warranty terms. The safest route is usually a seller you can hold accountable; compare the full cost and protections rather than choosing by price alone.
Where to buy a used phone in Canada
Canadian shoppers can look at refurbished devices sold by wireless providers or retailers, retailer marketplaces, private sales, and international sellers. Compare each option on seller accountability, whether you can inspect the phone, returns, warranty, total delivered price, and any required wireless plan. The Canadian Telecommunications Association recommends buying from a person or retailer you know and trust, and notes that many wireless providers sell refurbished devices with return policies and warranties. Read the specific seller’s current terms rather than assuming every listing has the same protections. Canadian Telecommunications Association consumer guidance.

| Buying channel | What to weigh | Before you commit |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier or retailer refurbished device | A retailer may be easier to hold accountable, and some providers offer returns and warranties. | Check the exact condition description, return window, warranty, and whether buying requires a plan. |
| Retailer marketplace | The retailer may host a listing from an independent seller, who could handle fulfillment, customer service, and returns. | Confirm the actual seller and read that seller’s terms, not just the marketplace’s general policy. Office of Consumer Affairs online shopping guidance. |
| Private sale | You may be able to inspect the phone directly, but there may be fewer remedies if the sale goes wrong. | Meet safely, inspect the device, check its IMEI, and keep a record of the seller’s claims. Most consumer legislation does not cover private sales. Office of Consumer Affairs online shopping guidance. |
| International seller | The delivered cost and the difficulty of resolving a problem can be higher than the listed price suggests. | Account for shipping, currency conversion, duties, taxes, and private courier fees; confirm whether warranty service applies in Canada. Office of Consumer Affairs online shopping guidance. |
For one specific marketplace program, eBay Canada says its official Refurbished program uses condition grades, includes one- or two-year Allstate-serviced warranties, and offers 30-day free returns subject to exceptions. Those terms describe that program, not every refurbished or “Seller Refurbished” listing. Confirm the current terms on the exact listing. eBay Canada Refurbished program.

Ask the seller for the phone’s IMEI and check it with DeviceCheck before paying. A phone reported lost or stolen and added to the Canadian device blacklist will not function on participating Canadian networks, according to the Canadian Telecommunications Association. A clear result is a useful screening step, not a guarantee against every form of fraud or a future blacklist report. Keep the seller’s identity and purchase documentation as well. What to inspect and ask the seller
Health Canada includes cell phones among second-hand handheld electrical products that buyers should inspect for damage. For an online listing, request clear, detailed photos; for an in-person purchase, examine the device yourself. Health Canada guidance on second-hand products.
- Ask how old the phone is, how heavily it was used, whether it was dropped or damaged, and whether it has been repaired.
- Check the body and screen for visible damage and compare the device with the seller’s stated condition.
- Confirm which accessories are included and whether they are included in the price.
- Identify the exact model, then check its suitability for your needs and compatibility with your wireless provider. Compatibility is model- and provider-specific; do not assume a phone works on every Canadian network.
How to evaluate the listing, returns, and warranty
Terms such as “used,” “refurbished,” or a condition grade do not mean the same thing across all sellers. Read the full listing and save a copy of the description and terms in case the delivered device differs from what was promised.

- This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
- This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
- This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
- Confirm the item’s stated condition and what any grade means according to that seller.
- Check who is selling the phone: the retailer itself or a marketplace third party.
- Read the return and exchange window, exclusions, complaint process, and who pays return shipping.
- For a warranty, check its duration, covered parts and labour, exclusions, claim process, repair location, and shipping responsibility; confirm whether it is included or costs extra.
- Ask whether a manufacturer warranty is valid in Canada. Coverage from a foreign manufacturer may not apply here, and provincial or territorial consumer protections can differ. For a dispute-specific answer, consult your local consumer affairs office. Office of Consumer Affairs warranty guidance.
For an online purchase, use a secure payment method and keep the order confirmation as well as the saved listing. Compare the full cost, not just the asking price
Work out what you will actually pay to get a usable phone: device price, shipping, taxes, import duties or fees where applicable, needed accessories, and any plan obligation attached to the purchase. Compare that total with the protections offered by each seller. No verified Canada-wide savings figure or current model-by-model price comparison is available here, so a specific phone cannot be named as the best value without checking current prices, stock, condition, and support details.
