A safe secondhand iPhone should have a verifiable identity, no Activation Lock, a clear carrier status, disclosed parts and battery condition, a written return window, and enough remaining iOS support to justify its total cost. Meet the seller in person when possible, erase and activate the phone under your account before paying, and walk away from any device that cannot pass the checks below.
New iPhone launch prices can make a previous-generation model look like a bargain, but a low sticker price can hide a carrier lock, an unpaid-device blacklist, an unknown battery, poor repairs, or no practical way to return the phone. The safest approach is a repeatable inspection: establish the seller’s terms, clear Activation Lock, verify the device identity, inspect parts and battery data, test every important function, and compare the complete value rather than the advertised price.

Why used iPhones become more attractive during a launch spike
The Associated Press reported in 2025, citing CCS Insight, that refurbished phones can cost 15% to 50% less than new ones. The same report said iPhones represented about 60% of the global secondhand-phone market, compared with about 17% for Samsung Android phones. Those are market-level figures, not a promise that a particular listing will offer a specific discount.

AP reported a UBS estimate that a top-of-the-line iPhone Pro Max starting price could rise 29%, from $1,200 to $1,550. When a new model’s launch price jumps, a one- or two-generation-old iPhone may deliver most of the experience for less money. The trade-off is that you assume more condition, fraud, repair, and support risk than you do with a new phone.

1. Choose the seller and the terms before you compare phones
A reliable seller and a usable return policy are more valuable than a small discount. Apple advises buyers to understand why returns are allowed, how long they last, and what a seller’s certification process actually inspects. Marketplace protections can be important because many private listings are sold as-is. AP notes that eBay and Swappa have policies for phones that are not as advertised; read the current policy on the exact listing and confirm who pays return shipping.
What to get in writing
- The exact model, storage capacity, color, IMEI or IMEIs, and whether the phone is factory unlocked.
- The cosmetic grade and the grading definitions used by that seller. Grades are not standardized across the industry.
- Battery-health information, any minimum-capacity promise, and whether battery replacement is covered.
- Every repaired or replaced component, including whether parts are genuine, used, or unverified.
- The warranty duration, return deadline, acceptable return condition, restocking fee, and refund method.
- Whether a charging cable, power adapter, case, or other accessory is included.

2. Clear Activation Lock before money changes hands
Activation Lock ties an iPhone to the previous owner’s Apple Account through Find My. A phone can look perfectly functional and still be unusable to you if that lock remains enabled. Apple’s instruction is unambiguous: do not buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.
In-person procedure
- Ask the seller to turn on the iPhone in front of you.
- If the screen says iPhone Locked to Owner, stop. Ask the seller to enter their password, turn off Find My and Activation Lock, and erase the device.
- Wait for the erase to finish. The phone should reach the Hello setup screen without requesting the previous owner’s account.
- Begin setup far enough to connect to Wi-Fi and confirm that the phone can activate under your account. Do not hand over payment while the seller’s account is still attached.
If you bought online, return the phone if that screen appears. Do not accept a promise that the seller will remove the lock later; the seller may be unreachable, and a receipt alone does not remove Activation Lock.

3. Confirm carrier status and the phone’s identity
Check Network Provider Lock
Open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock. No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked. A named network provider means the phone is restricted to that provider unless it is officially unlocked. An unlocked phone is usually easier to resell and use when you change carriers, but verify that it works with the bands and eSIM or physical-SIM arrangement you need in your country.
Record every IMEI
Record the IMEI shown in Settings and compare it with the listing, receipt, original box if available, and any carrier or marketplace blacklist check. Some iPhones have two IMEIs, so check both. Carriers commonly blacklist the IMEI of a phone reported stolen; a clean result today is useful evidence but is not a substitute for a return policy, because a later insurance or account dispute can still create trouble.
Do not buy if the IMEI on the device differs from the one in the listing or receipt, if the seller refuses to let you record it, or if a check reports a blacklist, financing problem, or ownership dispute. A mismatched identity can also indicate a replacement housing or a device assembled from parts.

4. Inspect Parts and Service History
On the same Settings > General > About screen, look for Parts and Service History. Apple uses labels including Genuine Apple Part, Used, Unknown, and Finish Repair. Read the individual component entries rather than treating a single “refurbished” label as a complete quality assessment.

An Unknown battery deserves particular caution. Apple warns that unverified battery-health information may be inaccurate and that nongenuine batteries can create safety or performance issues. A Parts and Service History entry is a disclosure tool, not a guarantee that every other component is original.
5. Evaluate battery health without treating one number as universal
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health, or Battery Health & Charging on older iOS versions. Review maximum capacity, peak-performance messages, and any warning about an unverified battery. Ask the seller for a screenshot before purchase, then verify it on the phone you receive.

There is no universal battery percentage that makes a used iPhone safe to buy. A seller may set a threshold such as 80%, but that is the seller’s policy, not an industry standard. Compare the capacity with the asking price, expected daily use, warranty, and the cost and availability of a future replacement. A high percentage with an Unknown battery history is not automatically better than a lower percentage from a clearly documented repair.
Look for rapid battery decline during your test, unexpected shutdowns, excessive heat, swelling, or a warning that performance management is active. Do not use, charge, or transport a phone with a visibly swollen battery; request a return through the seller instead.
6. Run a complete hands-on test before accepting the phone
Perform these checks after the seller has erased the phone and before the return period begins. Bring a known-good cable and, if practical, a SIM or eSIM plan that you can test without exposing your personal account.

- Inspect the exterior. Use bright light to examine the display, frame, back glass, camera lenses, and charging connector. Look for cracks, bent edges, deep dents, lifted screen edges, corrosion, or compacted debris in the port. Cosmetic grading should match the written listing.
- Test charging. Connect the cable and confirm that charging begins reliably. Gently move the connector; intermittent charging can indicate port damage. Apple says not to buy a phone that will not charge.
- Check the display and touch. Raise and lower brightness, view a white and a dark screen, and drag an icon across every edge and corner. Watch for dead pixels, flicker, burn-in, ghost touches, or areas that do not register.
- Test buttons and controls. Press the side button and volume buttons repeatedly. Toggle the Ring/Silent control where present and confirm that the response matches the setting. Check vibration and the on-screen controls.
- Test cameras in bright and low light. Take photos with the main camera and, where fitted, the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras. Check focus, exposure, lens switching, flash, and image stabilization. Photograph text and a distant subject so blur or a stuck focus mechanism is easier to spot.
- Record and play video. Make a short clip with sound, switch lenses while recording if supported, then play it back at normal volume. Look for camera crashes, distorted audio, dropped frames, or storage errors.
- Test speakers and microphone. Play music or a video through the speakers, place a test call if possible, and record Voice Memos. Play the recording through the speaker and headphones or a trusted Bluetooth device. Muffled input can indicate microphone or water damage.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. Join a known Wi-Fi network, load a page, and confirm that the connection remains stable. If you have permission and a compatible plan, test a call, text, mobile data, and the SIM or eSIM behavior.
- Check charging, heat, and performance together. Leave the phone connected for several minutes while opening apps and recording video. Excessive heat, repeated restarts, or a battery percentage that falls while charging warrants a return.
Do not let a seller rush this inspection. If a fault appears, photograph or record it, save the listing, and use the written return process rather than accepting an informal repair promise.

AP quoted Simon Bryant of CCS Insight calling roughly three generations old the “sweet spot” for value. He advised avoiding phones more than five or six generations old because operating-system support may be ending. The exact support runway depends on Apple’s future releases, so check whether the model can run the current iOS version and consider how many years of security updates you need.
Age is only one variable. A newer phone with an Unknown display, weak battery, no return protection, and a missing cable can be a worse purchase than an older phone with documented parts, strong battery health, and a dependable warranty.

Calculate the real cost as phone price plus tax and shipping, a replacement cable or charger, likely battery work, and the value of any protection you give up. Compare that total with a more expensive listing that includes a longer warranty or return period.
8. Use a safer workflow for online purchases
- Save the listing, photographs, seller messages, grading definition, IMEI information, and promised accessories.
- Pay through a method covered by the marketplace’s buyer-protection rules. Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or off-platform payment requests.
- On delivery, film the unboxing and photograph the package, serial or IMEI information, and the phone’s condition.
- Check Activation Lock first. Do not sign in with your Apple Account until the previous account is gone and the phone reaches a clean setup state.
- Run the About, Parts and Service History, Battery, charging, display, camera, audio, button, Wi-Fi, and cellular checks before the return deadline.
- If anything differs from the listing, open the platform’s return or dispute process immediately and keep the phone in the condition required by the policy.
9. Secure the phone after you accept it
The Federal Trade Commission recommends backing up data, removing SIM and SD cards where applicable, unlinking accounts, and restoring factory settings when changing phones. For a used iPhone, complete the reverse process only after Activation Lock has been cleared and the device is yours.
- Update iOS before moving sensitive data onto the phone.
- Set an automatic screen lock and use a strong passcode.
- Sign in to your Apple Account and enable Find My for your own device.
- Set up encrypted backups through the method you trust, and verify that a backup completes.
- Re-enroll authenticator apps and banking security only after confirming that recovery codes are available. Remove the previous owner’s trusted numbers or devices if any remain.
- Keep the receipt, IMEI record, warranty terms, and inspection photos until the return and warranty periods expire.
10. Red flags and what to do

11. A final payment checklist
- Seller reputation, certification details, warranty, and return terms are saved.
- Activation Lock is off, the phone is erased, and activation can begin under your account.
- Network Provider Lock shows the status you need.
- All IMEIs match the listing and receipt and have no available blacklist warning.
- Parts and Service History contains no unexplained entries, and any repair is covered in writing.
- Battery Health information is available, credible, and consistent with the seller’s policy.
- Charging, display, cameras, video, speakers, microphone, buttons, Wi-Fi, and cellular functions pass your test.
- The model’s support runway fits how long you plan to keep it.
- The total cost includes shipping, taxes, accessories, possible battery work, and the value of buyer protection.
If one of these checks fails, the safest saving is to walk away. A used iPhone is a good value only when the lower price survives identity, function, support, and return-risk checks.
