Bring the order confirmation and required photo ID, and check whether payment is due online or at pickup. A reported Micro Center declaration for some RTX 5090 purchases is not established as a nationwide policy or a rule for every graphics card.
What the reported RTX 5090 restriction means
Reports published October 2 and 3, 2026 describe a Micro Center declaration and scanned government-issued photo ID requested for certain NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 purchases. Tom’s Hardware reported that a reproduced form requested the purchaser’s legal name, address, photo ID, phone number and email, as well as the end user, installation location and intended use if relevant. It quoted the form as saying: “Micro Center will not sell this product to a purchaser who intends to export, reexport, resell, transfer, or otherwise cause it to leave the United States, regardless of destination.” Tom’s Hardware’s report attributes the form to a customer post.

TechRadar’s October 3 report described a documented transaction for a PowerSpec AI90 workstation containing an RTX 5090 at Micro Center’s Tustin, California, store, and relayed another customer’s account of a similar form in Columbus, Ohio. That reporting indicates a recent retailer practice with an uncertain product and geographic scope. It does not establish a published nationwide Micro Center policy, a rule for all GPUs, or an export-control law. Contact the specific store about the exact SKU or system before setting out.

Checklist before you leave home
- Confirm the exact model or system, the selected location’s current stock, and whether the item can actually be reserved. A displayed in-stock count is not necessarily a reservation.
- Wait until the order status says it is ready for pickup and follow the instructions in the retailer’s email or account.
- Check the pickup deadline, required identification, order number or confirmation, payment timing, and who is authorized to collect.
- Ask whether the store currently requires a declaration or other documentation for that particular model or a system containing it.
- Check whether quantity limits apply to the buyer, household, order, account, card, or address.
Micro Center: pickup, payment and ID
- Choose the store and place the pickup order. Use “18 Minute Pickup” where offered, but wait for the ready email or text before traveling. Some items shown in stock cannot be reserved and are sold first come, first served; confirm reservation status with the store. See Micro Center’s pickup guidance and reservation information.
- Bring the confirmation and photo ID. Micro Center’s general pickup guidance asks customers to bring their order confirmation and ID. For a reported RTX 5090 declaration, contact the location first to learn whether additional documentation is currently required.
- Pay when collecting the item. Micro Center says it does not offer prepayment for in-store pickup. Its payment guidance says it may request state-issued ID for credit or debit purchases and lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and cash among in-store payment methods.
- Collect within the hold period. Micro Center says it holds pickup orders for three days; an uncollected order is automatically canceled and returned to inventory.
- Arrange alternate pickup carefully. If someone else collects the order, Micro Center says that person needs the confirmation and their own ID, and must pay with their own card.
Best Buy: pickup, payment and ID
- Select Store Pickup at checkout. Wait for the separate “Ready for pickup” email before going to the store. Bring government-issued photo ID and the order number. Best Buy’s current instructions are at Best Buy store pickup.
- Make sure the right person is named. The ID should match the order name or the authorized pickup person. Only the buyer or the person designated for pickup may collect it; set another pickup person during checkout and provide their contact details.
- Check payment status. Best Buy places an authorization when an online order is placed and bills when it ships or is ready for pickup. Its payment information lists major cards, Apple Pay, cash, checks, PayPal and Best Buy payment products for in-store purchases.
- Collect before the deadline. Best Buy says pickup items are held for five days before cancellation and refund. Check the order details for any option to extend the pickup period.
- Review quantity limits. Best Buy may limit quantities per person, household or order, including across accounts or cards and sometimes shared addresses. See its quantity-limit information.
How the two pickup processes differ
| Check | Micro Center | Best Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Payment timing | Pay at pickup; no prepayment for in-store pickup, according to Micro Center. | Online order authorization at order placement; charge when shipped or ready for pickup, according to Best Buy. |
| Pickup hold | Three days; uncollected orders are automatically canceled and returned to inventory. | Five days before cancellation and refund; order details may offer an extension. |
| Pickup person | Another person collecting needs the confirmation and ID, and must pay with their own card. | Buyer or pickup person named in the order may collect; set an alternate during checkout. |
| Availability caveat | Some in-stock products cannot be reserved and are first come, first served. | Quantity limits may apply per person, household, order and, in some cases, across accounts, cards or shared addresses. |
| RTX 5090 declaration | Customer-shared forms were reported for certain purchases; ask the exact store about the exact item. | Not established by the cited reporting as a Best Buy requirement. |
