Before paying, check the seller’s reputation and the exact item, read the platform’s return and buyer-protection rules, and keep payment on-platform. For a used console, ask for a current test video and confirm it can access PlayStation services. Do not assume a third-party used PS5 comes with a Sony warranty.
The consumer guidance below is U.S.-focused. Marketplace protections, warranty terms, and consumer rights differ by location, so check the rules that apply to your country and the exact listing.

Before you choose a PS5 listing
- Check the seller. Read recent feedback, ratings, and available contact information. Search the marketplace and seller name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” PlayStation also recommends checking a seller’s ratings and reputation in its buying guide.
- Confirm what is actually for sale. Read the full description and identify whether the console is new, used, refurbished, or sold “as is.” Check the model, included accessories, and whether the listing describes any faults. Prefer several photos of the actual console over stock images; ask the seller to clarify anything unclear in writing.
- Be cautious about an unusually low price. A steep discount is a reason to scrutinize the seller and listing, not proof of a scam. The FTC notes that an expensive item offered at a very low price might be fake in its guidance on buying from an online marketplace.
- Read the marketplace rules before paying. Find the return and refund process, delivery terms, dispute procedure, and deadlines. Check that the protection applies to this seller and item; do not assume every marketplace purchase is covered in the same way.
What to ask before buying a used PS5
Ask the seller in writing for a recent video of the specific console. A useful video should show it powering on, the ports and buttons being checked, the disc drive working if the model has one, and the console connecting to the internet. Keep the reply and listing copy so you can compare them with what arrives.
If you can inspect the console in person, look for physical damage, image-quality problems, signs of overheating, broken warranty seals, and a serial number that is missing or appears altered. Test the controls, ports, power-on, disc drive if present, and network connection. These checks can reveal problems, but they do not guarantee that every fault has been found.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)

Check PlayStation access and the previous owner’s account
Ask whether the console has ever been reported lost or stolen, and verify that it can access PlayStation services. PlayStation warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services. A console that powers on is not necessarily a console that can use them.
Ask the seller to deactivate the console and remove their access before the sale. If the seller will not cooperate with reasonable checks, avoid the purchase.
Pay in a way that preserves recourse
Use the marketplace’s payment system or another payment method with a clear recourse process. The FTC identifies credit cards and secure online payment systems with buyer protection as safer options. Keep payment within the platform: paying elsewhere may cost you marketplace protections.

Do not send a seller money by wire transfer, gift card, cash reload card, or cryptocurrency when asked. These methods can be difficult to recover if the seller does not deliver. Save the listing, messages, payment confirmation, shipping details, and delivery packaging. Check the platform’s claim or return deadline as soon as a problem appears.
Inspect the console when it arrives
- Compare it with the listing. Check that the model, condition, accessories, and other promised details match. Compare the console with the seller’s photos and test video.
- Test basic operation. Power it on and check the ports, buttons, image, internet connection, and disc drive if applicable. Watch for damage or overheating during use.
- Confirm PlayStation access. Verify that the console can connect to PlayStation services. If it cannot, document what happens and contact the seller and marketplace promptly.
- Act within the applicable deadline. Follow the platform’s return, refund, or dispute process and submit the evidence it requests before its deadline.
Understand warranty coverage before deciding
Sony’s U.S. buying guide states: “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty.” That means a used console sold by an unrelated marketplace seller should not be treated as having Sony warranty coverage. Ask what warranty, if any, the seller or marketplace provides, and confirm its terms for the exact console and your location.
Sony Certified Refurbished is a distinct option, not a description that applies to every marketplace listing labeled “refurbished.” PlayStation says its certified refurbished products are cleaned, inspected, and tested; include necessary accessories, cables, and manuals; may have minor cosmetic imperfections; and come with its standard one-year limited warranty. Details are available from PlayStation Direct.

For the U.S. and Canada, Sony’s PS5 limited hardware warranty is for the original purchaser and lasts one year from the original purchase, subject to its terms and exclusions. Sony requires valid proof of purchase for warranty service. The warranty excludes, among other cases, products sold and clearly marked “as is” or with faults, and products whose serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed. Review the PS5 warranty terms for the applicable details. These manufacturer terms do not determine any separate rights you may have against a marketplace seller; check local law and the marketplace’s written policy.

Compare the actual offers rather than relying on a “refurbished” label. Sony’s statements below apply to its certified refurbished products only; third-party sellers may offer different testing, accessories, warranty coverage, and return terms.

If something goes wrong
- Contact the seller promptly and explain the mismatch or fault in writing.
- If the seller does not resolve it, open a case with the marketplace and follow its process and deadline.
- If you paid by card, contact the card issuer to ask about disputing the charge.
- For suspected dishonest businesses in the United States, the FTC recommends reporting the matter to the FTC and your state attorney general.
For the next purchase, walk away if the seller avoids reasonable tests, asks you to move payment off-platform, or offers an item that does not match the listing. PlayStation’s buying guide likewise advises buyers to trust their intuition when something feels wrong.
