Playwright can save viewport or full-page screenshots; keep a manifest beside the images so every capture can be traced to its URL, time, and browser settings. The screenshots document what was visibly rendered—they do not, by themselves, prove that a site meets the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites and Apps (GIGW).
Plan the capture before automating it
Start with a plain-text file containing one URL per line. Review the list and decide what each URL represents: a homepage, an important content page, or a page that normally requires a user interaction. Keep this file with the resulting screenshots; it is the input record for the batch.

Choose consistent browser conditions for captures you may compare. Record the browser, viewport width and height, and any device emulation or locale you set. These are reproducibility choices, not a GIGW-prescribed configuration. Do not put private or restricted URLs in a batch unless you are authorized to access and record them.
GIGW applies to government websites and apps at central, state, district, and local levels, and includes objectives such as usability, accessibility, consistency, security, and quality. See the official scope and objectives. A screenshot is evidence of visible rendering under the chosen conditions, not a finding that a page is functional, accessible, secure, or GIGW-compliant.

Bulk capture with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It reads urls.txt, opens each URL in a fresh page, saves a full-page PNG, and writes a JSON Lines manifest containing the requested URL, final URL, page title, timestamp, viewport, and any error. Playwright documents page and full-page screenshots and the Page screenshot options.
1. Install the browser automation package
With Node.js installed, create a project and install Playwright:

2. Create the URL list
Save one complete public URL on each line in urls.txt. Blank lines and lines beginning with # are ignored.

3. Save and run the capture script

}Run it with node capture.mjs. The screenshots directory will contain numbered PNG files and manifest.jsonl. Each manifest line maps one input URL to its outcome. A non-success HTTP status is recorded but does not automatically prevent an image from being saved; inspect that page and its manifest entry rather than treating the image as a successful page capture.

Viewport or full-page capture
For only the visible browser viewport, remove fullPage: true from the screenshot options. Full-page capture includes page content beyond the current viewport, but very long pages can produce large images and may render differently from a series of viewport captures. Use one mode consistently when comparing pages, and review pages with sticky elements, lazy-loaded content, or interaction-gated sections individually.
Preserve context and review exceptions
The script records requested and final URLs because redirects can change the page being captured. It also records the capture time, title, viewport, screenshot filename, and errors. Keep the manifest and original URL list with the image set, and note any additional conditions—such as locale or device emulation—if you change the script.
- Review entries with navigation errors separately from completed captures.
- Check redirects and inaccessible pages against the intended URL; do not silently substitute a different page.
- Pages that need a click, form submission, or other interaction require a deliberate interaction step before capture. A plain navigation-and-screenshot loop will not reproduce every user journey.
- For comparisons across dates, keep browser and viewport conditions consistent and record any changes.
GIGW’s accessibility material references WCAG 2.1 and relevant manual evaluation and browser accessibility tools. See the GIGW criteria. A screenshot set cannot establish keyboard operability, accessible names and roles, or other criteria that require interaction or dedicated evaluation.

Troubleshooting common batch issues
- Browser executable missing: run
npx playwright install chromiumafter installing the package. - Navigation timeout: a site may be slow or hold network requests open. The example waits for
domcontentloadedrather than every resource to finish and allows 60 seconds. If a page still times out, check the URL and network access, then consider a longer timeout for that page; record the exception rather than treating it as a valid capture. - Screenshot missing for a URL: inspect that row’s
errorand final URL in the manifest. The script continues to the next URL after a per-page failure. - Unexpected page or redirect: compare
requestedUrlandfinalUrl, then decide whether the redirected destination belongs in the capture set. - Blank or incomplete-looking image: the page may render content after initial navigation or require interaction. Review it manually and adjust the wait or interaction for that page; do not assume a screenshot is complete just because a file exists.
Large batches take longer and consume local memory and disk in proportion to the number and size of screenshots. The script processes pages sequentially, which is slower than parallel capture but keeps the workflow simple and avoids opening many browser pages at once. If you add concurrency, keep it bounded and continue to record per-URL errors.

Frequently asked questions
Does GIGW require a particular browser viewport for screenshots?
The cited GIGW guidance does not prescribe a screenshot viewport. Choose conditions suited to the evaluation and record them so the captures can be interpreted.
Can screenshots alone verify WCAG 2.1 or GIGW accessibility?
No. They show rendered pixels; relevant accessibility checks can require manual evaluation, interaction, and accessibility tools.
