Generative AI search changes how some people discover businesses: instead of choosing among ranked links, users may first see a synthesized answer with supporting links. That makes visibility and website visits different outcomes—but it does not make sound SEO obsolete. Google says its generative Search features remain grounded in core Search systems, so leaders should strengthen useful content and technical foundations while measuring citations, clicks, and business results separately.
What changes when search gives an answer first?
In conventional search, a results page presents links for a user to compare. In generative features, a system may synthesize an answer and show sources alongside it. A brand can therefore be visible in an answer without receiving a visit, and a referral count alone may not show whether the brand appeared.

Google describes its own generative Search features as using retrieval-augmented generation grounded in its Search index. For complex questions, its systems may also run related searches—a process Google calls query fan-out—to gather material. These descriptions apply to Google Search; they should not be treated as a universal explanation of how every assistant works. Google’s guide to generative AI features in Search explains its approach.

Google reported more than 2.5 billion monthly active users for AI Overviews and more than one billion monthly users for AI Mode in an announcement published June 3, 2026, and updated August 31, 2026. These are Google’s company-reported figures for its own features, not independent estimates of all generative search use. Google’s announcement provides the figures and context.

Does SEO still matter for generative AI search?
Yes. Google’s guidance is that the practices which help its Search systems find, understand, and assess a page remain relevant to its generative features. The starting point is still accessible, crawlable pages, clear structure, accurate information, and content that genuinely serves the reader. Google also says many proposed AEO or GEO “hacks” are ineffective or unsupported.
The distinction is between fundamentals and guarantees. Good SEO can make useful material eligible to be found; it cannot guarantee a citation, a particular position, a click, or a sale. Nor is there one established optimization recipe that applies across every AI product.
What should marketing and web teams improve?
Make pages easy to access and understand
- Check that important pages can be crawled and indexed, and that their content is available in a readable page structure.
- Use descriptive headings and clear page organization so people and search systems can identify what a page explains.
- Keep essential claims accurate and current. Make the supporting detail easy to find rather than burying it in vague promotional copy.
- Review the overall page experience, including useful images and video where they help explain the subject.
Invest in material that adds something distinctive
Prioritize original research, expert knowledge, first-hand experience, and practical explanations that improve on a generic summary. Google’s guidance emphasizes valuable, useful content and notes that distinctive material may matter more over time than proposed shortcuts. The editorial test is straightforward: would this page still help someone if they had already seen a basic answer elsewhere?

A page should answer its audience’s real question, show where its claims come from when appropriate, and offer something worth visiting for.
What should communications and PR teams do?
Make authoritative company facts, subject-matter expertise, and evidence straightforward to verify. Keep useful explanations available on owned pages, and pursue substantive third-party coverage that reflects genuine expertise rather than manufactured mentions.
A 2025 comparative study reported that the source mix varied by engine and language; in the systems it tested, generative AI search drew more heavily on earned and other third-party sources than its tested traditional Google results. That is a reason to take credible external visibility seriously, not a universal citation formula. The result is bounded by the study’s dataset and platforms. The comparative paper describes its scope.
How should leaders measure visibility and business impact?
Do not collapse appearance in an answer, a cited link, a click, and a qualified opportunity into one “AI visibility” number. They answer different questions. Start with the measures your teams can observe, document their coverage, and connect them to first-party analytics and CRM outcomes where possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Measure | What it can tell you | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Generative-feature visibility | Whether a property appears in the covered search features and the visibility reported there. | Whether a user visited, was qualified, or became a customer. |
| Clicks and qualified visits | Whether observed referrals brought people to the site, and whether those visits met your chosen quality criteria. | All prior exposure to a brand or the full influence of an answer that did not produce a click. |
| Branded demand and CRM outcomes | Whether demand and tracked sales outcomes move alongside visibility or visits in your own measurement setup. | A causal effect from generative search without a design that can test causation. |
For Google-specific visibility, Search Console documents a generative AI performance report. Its figures concern Google’s Search features; it is not a cross-platform measurement standard. Establish a baseline with that report where available, then track clicks, qualified visits, branded demand, and pipeline separately. Google’s report documentation explains what it covers.
For sales teams, the useful question is whether prospects associated with generative-feature referrals behave differently in your own funnel. Compare lead quality and downstream outcomes using your analytics and CRM, while accounting for gaps in attribution. The evidence cited here does not establish an across-industry conversion advantage for AI referrals.
A preregistered field experiment with 1,100 participants reported more publisher clicks when AI Overviews and AI Mode were removed. Its abstract also reports reduced click-through and erosion of user experience and trust in information found on Google in an AI Mode-only condition. These results describe the experiment’s setup, not a forecast for every site, query, market, or product. The study abstract gives its findings and sample size.

Should a publisher opt out of Google’s generative features?
Google’s Search generative AI control is available worldwide, according to its documentation as of August 31, 2026. Inclusion is the default. Excluding content means it will not appear in the covered generative features; impressions and traffic from those features are also removed. Google says the control does not affect ranking in other areas of Search. Google’s control documentation describes the scope and effects.
This is a trade-off rather than a universal recommendation. Eligibility can provide a route to visibility and a link, while an answer that satisfies a user without a visit may reduce the value of that exposure for some publishers. The decision should reflect the value your organization places on those outcomes. Review the control’s documented scope before changing it and allow for propagation time; do not assume a change will take effect instantly.
How can teams avoid misleading AI visibility comparisons?
Coverage differs across platforms, markets, languages, and answer surfaces. Google’s Search Console report and control describe Google Search; neither supplies a standard for measuring every assistant. Third-party monitoring may cover more systems, but the number it reports is only useful when the team understands exactly what was measured.
- Which engines, countries, languages, and answer surfaces are included?
- Does the measure represent a mention, a cited link, an impression, a site visit, or a qualified business outcome?
- Can the team inspect which pages or sources appeared, and how repeatable is the observation?
- How often is the data updated, and what limitations affect the result?
- Does the proposed action improve usefulness, accuracy, accessibility, or independent credibility—or depend on an unsupported shortcut?
Build platform-level scorecards rather than treating a single visibility score as universal. Compare visibility, click-through, and business outcomes by platform and market where your data allows. This is a practical response to platform-specific reporting and documented variation among engines, not a standard mandated by Google.
Quick Recap
What should leaders do first?
- Set a baseline. Record the Google generative-feature visibility available in Search Console, along with site visits, lead quality, branded demand, and relevant pipeline measures.
- Audit the foundations. Have web and marketing teams check crawlability, structure, accuracy, and page experience on the pages that matter to customers.
- Choose a content gap worth filling. Commission useful original material—such as expert explanations, evidence, or first-hand insight—instead of producing another interchangeable summary.
- Align communications and sales. Make company facts verifiable, support credible external expertise, and agree on how referrals and downstream outcomes will be assessed.
- Review Google’s participation control. Decide deliberately whether the expected value of eligibility outweighs the possibility that an answer may satisfy users without a site visit.
- Review results by platform and market. Change priorities based on observable outcomes, while keeping visibility, traffic, and sales distinct.
