You can build semantic search without using an LLM to generate answers: turn documents and queries into embeddings, search those vectors, and return the matching source text. A tutorial by Umer Abdullah on DEV Community describes a prototype using Hugging Face embeddings, Qdrant, and FastAPI. Its “$0/month” and 2–10 ms claims are not general guarantees: costs depend on service allowances and usage, while the reported timings lack a reproducible benchmark.
What “semantic search without an LLM” means
Semantic search finds text that is conceptually related to a query, rather than relying only on exact keyword matches. In the tutorial’s design, an embedding model represents each document and search query as a vector. Qdrant compares the query vector with stored document vectors and returns the closest matches.

“Without an LLM” here means without an answer-generation model in the search response. The pipeline still uses a machine-learning model to create embeddings. It retrieves existing passages; it does not compose a new answer or guarantee that a returned passage is accurate, complete, or relevant.

How the tutorial’s pipeline works
The tutorial describes a separate frontend and Python API. The frontend is hosted on GitHub Pages; a FastAPI backend accepts document uploads and handles search. Its example includes a 384-dimensional cosine-similarity collection, a small JSON sample dataset, and dependencies including FastAPI, Uvicorn, python-multipart, qdrant-client, and requests. /uploadendpoint accepts JSON documents, obtains embeddings through Hugging Face, and stores vectors with their payloads in Qdrant. - Search: The
/searchendpoint embeds the query, can apply a category filter, and requests up to three vector matches. - Return source material: The response includes match scores and stored source text, leaving the reader to judge the passages rather than presenting a generated answer.
The example initializes Qdrant with location=":memory:". That makes the storage choice a prototype concern: plan for persistence, recovery, application restarts, and document refreshes before relying on the index for real users. The Qdrant quickstart documents the general collection, data-loading, and search workflow; it does not validate this tutorial’s deployment or persistence behavior.
Is it really free and blazing fast?
The tutorial presents the architecture as costing $0 per month and reports vector matching in 2–10 milliseconds. Those are the author’s claims about the example, not independently verified results or expectations readers can assume. The article does not give a reproducible benchmark setup, corpus size, hardware, or traffic pattern, so the timing cannot establish how a different deployment will perform.

“Free” is conditional too. Hugging Face’s current Inference Providers pricing documentation, accessed October 7, 2026, says free users receive $0.10 in monthly credits, subject to change, with pay-as-you-go usage available beyond that. Hugging Face states: “Past the free-tier credits, you get charged for every inference request based on the compute time x price of the underlying hardware.” Whether a small experiment fits within an allowance depends on actual usage and service terms; do not treat the tutorial’s title as a production cost estimate.

These are the author’s reported figures, not a verified statement of current host behavior. What to check before deploying it
The sample is a demonstration, not something established as production-ready. Review the actual code and deployment for your use case; the tutorial’s broad CORS configuration, request handling, error paths, embedding endpoint details, and in-memory state all merit implementation-specific verification. This is a checklist for review, not a security audit.
- Durability: Decide where vectors and document payloads live, how they survive restarts, and how to restore or rebuild the index.
- Data lifecycle: Define how documents are updated or removed and how changed content gets re-embedded.
- Service usage: Check the embedding provider’s current limits, credit rules, and charges for the volume you expect.
- Availability: Confirm the backend host’s current sleep, cold-start, and plan policies against the responsiveness your users need.
- Search quality: Test results with representative queries and documents. A vector score is not proof that a passage is useful or correct.
- API behavior: Validate input handling, error responses, access controls, and CORS settings for the frontend and deployment you actually use.
Choosing the next step
The tutorial is a reasonable starting point for exploring retrieval, but its design choices have distinct operational trade-offs. The available sources do not provide a fair benchmark across alternatives, so choose based on what you need to operate rather than assuming one is faster or better.
