How to Build Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3: Class, Skills, and Gear

For an easy-to-level Astarion who can scout, pick locks, and handle traps, keep him a Dexterity-focused Rogue. Choose Sleight of Hand and Stealth for his core utility, then pick a level-3 subclass to suit your playstyle: Arcane Trickster for spell utility, Thief for bonus-action flexibility, or Assassin for stealth-focused openings.

If you want a more specialized combat progression, a Patch 8-era guide recommends Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7. It aims to make stealth openings and Extra Attack central to the build, but it is not required to make Astarion useful. The best choice depends on how you approach encounters and what your party needs.

Start with Astarion’s role and baseline

Astarion joins as a Rogue, a High Elf with the Charlatan background. His Rogue toolkit suits scouting and Dexterity-based utility: he can help the party find traps, open locks, and move through areas unseen. Rogue’s primary ability is Dexterity, so keep it at the center of his build whether you stay single-classed or multiclass.

There is an important distinction between his displayed pre-recruitment ability scores and his recruit state. Before recruitment, his listed level-1 scores are Strength 8, Dexterity 17, Constitution 14, Intelligence 12, Wisdom 13, and Charisma 10. On recruitment, he returns to level 1 with standard Rogue ability scores; at level 3, his default subclass is Arcane Trickster. Check the current Astarion companion reference if you want to confirm his in-game profile.

Those pre-recruitment numbers are useful context, but they should not be mistaken for a separate build target after he joins. Once recruited, plan him as the Rogue he is: prioritize Dexterity and choose skills and subclass around the job you want him to perform. The key practical decision is not whether to preserve the pre-recruitment display, but whether your party needs a dedicated scout and lockpicker, a dialogue character, or a stealth-oriented combatant.

For a straightforward campaign, there is no need to rebuild him around a complicated multiclass. A single-class Rogue preserves a clear progression and keeps his out-of-combat role obvious. Consider the Ranger/Rogue route only if you specifically want its stealth-opening focus and are comfortable planning the level order.

Astarion can be particularly convenient when one party member is expected to handle several Dexterity-based tasks. That does not mean every party must assign him those jobs: if another character already covers locks, traps, or scouting, you can give his proficiencies a different purpose. Think about the gaps in the group before making choices, rather than treating a standard rogue skill package as mandatory.

Choose skills around your party

Rogue lets you choose four proficiencies from its available skill list, which includes Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Perception, Deception, Investigation, and Persuasion. A practical starting point is Sleight of Hand plus Stealth: the first supports lock picking and trap handling, while the second helps Astarion scout and approach unseen. These are useful role choices, not mandatory mechanical requirements.

  • Sleight of Hand: prioritize it if you want Astarion to handle locks and traps.
  • Stealth: choose it for scouting and sneaking into position before a fight.
  • Persuasion: consider it if Astarion often leads conversations for your party.
  • Perception: take it if another lookout would help your group notice things while exploring.

Because the class choice gives four skill proficiencies, the two core recommendations do not exhaust the available choices. Use the remaining selections to complement the rest of the party. Deception and Investigation are also among the Rogue’s listed options; they may suit a character concept or party plan, but the source guidance does not prescribe one universal set of four. The main trade-off is coverage: Stealth serves the scout role, while Persuasion helps if Astarion is the party’s frequent speaker, and Perception adds another lookout.

The specialized Ranger/Rogue guide recommends Persuasion and Sleight of Hand for its own build. That pairing is a reasonable alternative if Astarion is both your lockpicker and a frequent dialogue character; it does not make Stealth a poor choice for other party setups. Rogue’s class features, proficiency options, and listed starting equipment are summarized in the BG3 Wiki Rogue reference.

Skill proficiencies are a party-planning decision as much as a character-building decision. If the protagonist or another companion already handles dialogue, you may value Perception more than Persuasion. If another character is the dedicated scout, you can avoid duplicating that role. Conversely, if Astarion is the character you routinely send ahead, Stealth and Sleight of Hand reinforce a coherent out-of-combat job. The recommendations are about making that job convenient, not about disqualifying other combinations.

Pick a Rogue subclass at level 3

Astarion defaults to Arcane Trickster when he reaches Rogue level 3. The subclass changes the emphasis of the character rather than establishing one universally best choice: select according to whether you want spell options, flexible bonus actions, or an opening-round plan built around stealth.

Subclass What it emphasizes Choose it when
Arcane Trickster Spell utility You want Astarion to add magical options while remaining a Rogue.
Thief Bonus-action flexibility You value adaptable bonus-action use in your preferred playstyle.
Assassin Stealth-focused openings You want to build around setting up combat from stealth when feasible.

These are playstyle distinctions, not a damage ranking. Encounter setup, party composition, difficulty, and the items you obtain all affect how a subclass feels in practice. The available sources do not establish one subclass as best for every party or difficulty.

In practical terms, Arcane Trickster is the least disruptive choice if you want to follow Astarion’s default identity while adding spell utility. Thief is the alternative to consider when flexible bonus-action use is the appeal. Assassin makes most sense when you expect to set up fights from stealth and want the character’s subclass to support that opening emphasis. These descriptions are intentionally broad: the cited material does not provide a spell list, exact action-by-action rotation, or a tested ranking among the three.

Do not choose Assassin solely because the specialized multiclass uses it. That build also takes Gloom Stalker Ranger levels and is planned around stealth openings; choosing the Assassin subclass by itself does not reproduce the entire Ranger/Rogue progression. Similarly, a single-class Rogue can stay useful without adopting the multiclass. Pick the subclass that matches your intended approach and the party’s needs.

Decide whether to multiclass

The simplest option is to keep Astarion a Rogue and select a subclass that suits your campaign. Rogue 12 is a clear, thematic route with consistent Rogue utility. The sources do not provide a complete level-by-level Rogue 12 plan, so there is no evidence-based basis here for prescribing exact ability-score or feat choices across every level.

For players who want a more specialized stealth-first build, PC Gamer’s Patch 8-era guide recommends Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7. It reaches Ranger 5 before advancing Rogue, taking Gloom Stalker at Ranger 3 and Assassin at Rogue 3. The guide’s sequence is intended to reach Extra Attack through Ranger before moving into Rogue.

Route Leveling and combat emphasis Trade-off
Rogue 12, subclass to taste Simple progression; retains Rogue utility throughout. Less front-loaded martial attack progression than the cited Ranger/Rogue plan. A precise level-by-level monoclass sequence is not stated in the source.
Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 Stealth openings and Extra Attack after the Ranger levels; the guide recommends beginning encounters from stealth when feasible. More specialized and more dependent on encounter approach and multiclass progression.

The comparison is about leveling simplicity, role, and intended encounter approach—not a claim that one route always deals more damage. Rogue 12 is easier to follow if you want a consistent Rogue identity and do not want to plan a class split. The Ranger 5 / Rogue 7 route asks you to complete the Ranger levels first, then build toward Assassin; in return, its progression is explicitly designed around the Ranger side’s Extra Attack and a stealth-first opening plan.

The multiclass is an option, not a prerequisite for a capable Astarion. It asks you to plan class levels around a particular combat approach; if you prefer to level without managing that sequence, stay Rogue. Neither route has a supported universal damage advantage here, and the build guide is not a controlled comparison across party compositions or difficulties.

Before choosing the split, ask whether you actually start fights from stealth when the situation permits. If you usually enter encounters directly, the specialized route’s intended setup may not fit your habits as neatly. Also consider party coverage: Astarion’s utility as a Dexterity-focused companion is still relevant, but the multiclass plan is presented as a combat-focused build rather than a universal upgrade to every part of his role.

Follow the cited Ranger/Rogue progression

  1. Take Ranger levels first, up to Ranger 5. Choose Gloom Stalker at Ranger 3. The guide’s purpose for completing these five levels first is to reach Extra Attack before moving into Rogue.
  2. Then take Rogue levels. Choose Assassin at Rogue 3, continuing until the character reaches Rogue 7 for the Ranger 5 / Rogue 7 split.
  3. At the Rogue 4 point, use the guide’s feat plan as a choice, not a rule. It lists +2 Dexterity and, alternatively, Alert or Savage Attacker. These are the guide’s recommendations; choose based on your priorities rather than treating them as required for the build.
  4. Set up fights from stealth when practical. The route is designed around stealth openings, so its intended approach is to begin encounters from stealth when the situation allows. It is not a promise that every fight will start on your terms.

The progression is sequential: the plan completes Ranger 5 before taking the remaining Rogue levels. That order matters to the guide’s stated goal of gaining Extra Attack through Ranger before finishing the Assassin side. It is not the only way to build Astarion, but changing the order would no longer be the same progression described in PC Gamer’s guide.

The feat suggestions are likewise part of that particular plan, not requirements for all Rogues. The guide names +2 Dexterity and offers Alert or Savage Attacker as alternatives at its Rogue 4 point. The source does not establish a single mandatory choice between them, so treat the list as a decision point. Dexterity remains the core ability for Rogue, while the alternative feat options reflect the specific guide’s build plan.

This progression and the guide’s recommended skills and gear are described in PC Gamer’s Patch 8 and beyond Baldur’s Gate 3 build guide. Its choices are a specific build plan rather than a mandatory respec for every Astarion.

Gear: start with what he has, then adapt

Astarion’s listed Rogue starting kit includes a shortsword, leather armor, leather boots, thieves’ tools, and two grease bottles. Treat that as a usable starting loadout, not a fixed endgame setup. Weapon, armor, and accessory choices depend on what you find and on whether you are using the stealth-focused multiclass route.

Rogue’s listed weapon proficiencies include simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, and shortswords, and its armor proficiency includes light armor. That is a useful boundary when evaluating drops: the named gear examples below are possibilities from one build guide, not a requirement to equip a particular weapon or armor at every stage. The sources do not provide a full list of item stats or a best-in-slot comparison for every subclass.

For its Gloom Stalker/Assassin build, the PC Gamer guide names the following campaign-stage examples. They are optional in-game items, and the list does not establish that every item is guaranteed to be available in every run or optimal for every party.

Campaign stage Named examples in the guide How to use the list
Act 1 Knife of the Undermountain King; Caustic Band; Auntie Ethel’s Hair as a stat-boost example. Consider these if they fit your route and build; none is required to make the character function.
Act 2 Yuan-Ti Scale Mail. A guide-listed armor option for its specific progression.
Act 3 Elegant Studded Leather; Legacy of the Masters; Armour of Agility; Bloodthirst; Crimson Mischief. These are examples for a later campaign stage, not a guaranteed complete equipment set.

Use the act labels as a broad campaign-stage checklist, not a promise of a fixed shopping route. The list does not state where each item is found, what it costs, or which exact combination to equip at each level. It also does not say that every item will be available in every playthrough. If one is out of reach or does not suit the version of Astarion you are playing, the core build still rests on his class, skills, and chosen progression—not on collecting a complete named set.

Do not delay leveling or force a detour simply because a named item appears in a build list. Keep the gear that supports your current approach, and replace it when a better-fitting option becomes available in your campaign. The published list is specific to the stealth-oriented Ranger/Assassin plan; the sources do not establish an equivalent item-by-item best-in-slot progression for every Rogue subclass.

There is no real-world purchase cost attached to these build choices: the listed gear consists of in-game options. Larian’s official site lists a Physical Deluxe Edition for readers who do not own the game, but availability, platform, current listing, price, and affiliate eligibility have not been verified here. Buying a particular edition or merchandise is not necessary to follow Astarion’s build.

Version and platform considerations

Larian dates Patch 8’s rollout to April 15, 2025 and described it as the game’s final major update. PC Gamer frames its multiclass guide around Patch 8 and beyond. That does not rule out later hotfixes, mods, or platform-specific differences affecting a mechanic; check the current game if a detail such as level behavior or item availability is decisive for your run. Larian’s official Baldur’s Gate 3 site is the primary source for its update information.

For a standard unmodded campaign, the cited advice is explicitly framed for Patch 8 and beyond. If you are using mods or a platform-specific setup, do not assume every build detail will behave identically. This matters most when a choice depends on precise level progression or an item’s availability. The core recommendation—a Dexterity-centered Rogue for utility, with subclass and skills selected for your party—remains the straightforward starting point described by the companion and class references.

Astarion’s line on the BG3 Wiki companion reference captures his characterful tone: “Keep your distance, darling.” It is flavor rather than build advice, but it fits a companion whose suggested role often involves scouting ahead and working from the edges of a fight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest Astarion build in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Keep him a Dexterity-focused Rogue. Sleight of Hand and Stealth support lock picking, trap handling, and scouting; choose a level-3 subclass based on whether you want Arcane Trickster spell utility, Thief bonus-action flexibility, or Assassin stealth openings.

Should I keep Astarion as an Arcane Trickster?

Arcane Trickster is his default Rogue subclass at level 3 and suits players who want spell utility. Thief and Assassin are alternatives for bonus-action flexibility and stealth-focused openings. The sources do not establish one subclass as best for every party or difficulty.

Is Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 required?

No. It is a specialized Patch 8-era option for players who want stealth openings and the progression toward Extra Attack through Ranger 5. A single-class Rogue is the simpler route and retains a clear Rogue role.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What skills should Astarion take?

Sleight of Hand and Stealth are a natural pairing for a lockpicker and scout. Consider Persuasion if he often leads dialogue, or Perception if your party needs another lookout. Rogue’s listed skill choices also include Deception and Investigation, so use the remaining proficiencies to cover party needs.

What gear does Astarion start with?

His listed Rogue starting kit is a shortsword, leather armor, leather boots, thieves’ tools, and two grease bottles. The named act-by-act items in the specialized build guide are optional examples, not required gear.

The Bottom Line

For the simplest Astarion build, keep him a Dexterity-focused Rogue, use Sleight of Hand and Stealth to support his scout and lockpicker role, and select Arcane Trickster, Thief, or Assassin according to your preferred playstyle. The Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 plan is a more specialized alternative for stealth openings and a Ranger-first route to Extra Attack—not a requirement. Treat the named gear as optional campaign-stage examples, and let your party composition and available items guide the final choices.
