Yes, you can build an Xbox game with Defold, but Xbox support is not part of the ordinary public download. Defold announced Xbox support in version 1.14.0 on October 12, 2026. Access is limited to developers approved by Microsoft for Xbox development who then request and receive Defold’s Xbox-specific resources. The practical path has two gates: Microsoft approval first, followed by Defold verification and access. Only after both are complete can you use the Xbox extension, integrations and restricted build-and-test documentation.
Can you make an Xbox game with Defold?
Defold 1.14.0 is the first publicly announced Defold release with Xbox support. The Defold Foundation’s October 12, 2026 announcement says approved Xbox developers can obtain the resources needed to build for Microsoft Xbox consoles. That wording is important: installing Defold 1.14.0 alone does not enable an Xbox target.

The normal public Defold download does not include the Xbox build target. Xbox support is distributed to developers whose Microsoft approval has been checked by Defold. A developer therefore needs both an accepted Microsoft developer relationship and a separate Defold access request.
- Microsoft gate: your organization must be approved for Xbox console development through an applicable Microsoft program, such as ID@Xbox.
- Defold gate: an account associated with that approved organization must request Defold through Microsoft’s Xbox middleware channel, after which Defold verifies the status.
- Development gate: once verified, you receive the Xbox-specific Defold extension, integrations, tool requirements and instructions for building, bundling and testing.
- Publishing gate: Microsoft’s onboarding, Partner Center, game-concept approval and any applicable certification or release requirements still control publication on Xbox.
These are separate responsibilities. Defold supplies engine integration and technical materials; Microsoft decides who may develop for Xbox and who may publish through its platform.

Which Defold version supports Xbox?
The relevant version is Defold 1.14.0, announced by the Defold Foundation on October 12, 2026. The release announcement says approved developers with Xbox access can build for Microsoft Xbox consoles.
The version number does not mean that every 1.14.0 installation exposes an Xbox export option. The Xbox target and supporting materials are supplied only through the approved-developer channel. If you download Defold from the ordinary public distribution and do not see Xbox resources, that is expected rather than a failed installation.
Keep the version and access conditions together when planning a project: use the release that provides Xbox support, obtain the restricted resources through the documented request process, and follow the current instructions delivered to your approved account. Do not assume that an older Defold release, a public nightly build or a copied project configuration can substitute for the supported 1.14.0 Xbox package.

Apply through a Microsoft Xbox developer program
Defold directs prospective developers to Microsoft’s game-publishing programs, including ID@Xbox. Microsoft’s public publishing overview describes registration for a developer program, execution of the applicable nondisclosure and development agreements, and access to the Xbox development materials required by the program.
Approval is organization-based, not simply a promise that an individual intends to release a game. Use the legal organization and contact details that will be used for the project’s Microsoft relationship. If your studio changes its legal entity, ownership or account administrator, confirm with Microsoft which account remains authorized before requesting Defold resources.

Complete the Microsoft onboarding steps that apply to your program
Microsoft’s overview identifies several pieces of the console-development process:
- developer-program registration;
- the applicable NDA and development agreements;
- access to the Xbox Game Development Kit (GDK) materials when your approval permits it;
- Partner Center access for managing the publishing relationship; and
- game-concept submission and approval when you need full Xbox services and console publishing.
The exact requirements can vary by program and can change over time. ID@Xbox approval and any other Microsoft onboarding route should not be treated as interchangeable without checking the current eligibility rules. A project that has a Microsoft account but has not completed the required agreements or concept review may still be unable to publish or use all Xbox services.
Plan for development-kit access separately
Microsoft’s onboarding description says approved developers complete vendor setup and gain access to the Entertainment Developer Store, where development kits can be ordered. This is a program-controlled procurement path, not a retail purchase. Kit availability, ordering permission, fulfillment and timing are managed through the developer channel.
Do not budget on the assumption that a kit is free, immediately available or guaranteed as soon as an application is submitted. Wait for Microsoft’s instructions about your organization’s eligibility, ordering rights and hardware terms. If hardware is delayed, use only the testing options permitted by your current Microsoft and Defold access; do not attempt to bypass the console-security or account controls.
How to request Defold Xbox support after Microsoft approval
Defold’s process begins only after Microsoft has approved your organization for Xbox development. The account used for the request must be associated with that organization.

- Confirm the Microsoft approval. Make sure your organization has been accepted into an applicable Xbox developer program and that the account you will use is recognized as part of that organization. Keep the approval or organization details available in case Defold asks you to verify them.
- Sign in to Microsoft’s Xbox middleware page. Use the approved organization-associated account, not an unrelated personal account. An account mismatch can make an approved studio appear ineligible.
- Find Defold in the middleware listings. The middleware page is the handoff point Microsoft and Defold use for this request. Select Defold’s listing and follow the current request-access flow shown there.
- Submit the access request. Provide the requested organization and contact information accurately. Do not claim Xbox approval for a different entity, project or account.
- Wait for Defold verification. Defold checks the developer status before supplying Xbox materials. The public Defold download remains unchanged while this check is pending.
- Use the restricted resources delivered after approval. The approved package and documentation are the authoritative instructions for your environment. Record which Defold version, account and organization received access so your team does not accidentally build from an unapproved installation.
If the request page does not show Defold, the organization association is missing, or verification does not complete, contact the relevant Microsoft or Defold support channel using the account that holds the approval. Repeatedly reinstalling the public editor will not unlock the Xbox target.

The Xbox-specific Defold resources are intended to cover the engine side of console development. The Foundation identifies the following components:
| Resource | What it is for | What is not established publicly |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox extension | Connects a Defold project to Xbox-specific functionality exposed through the approved integration. | The public announcement does not list a package filename, API surface or setup command. |
| User-management integrations | Supports account and user-related features required by an Xbox game. | Detailed entitlement, sign-in and multiplayer implementation steps are restricted to the approved materials. |
| Game-save integrations | Provides the Defold-side integration for Xbox save functionality. | The public announcement does not specify quotas, API calls, storage limits or failure-handling code. |
| Required-tool information | Explains which development tools and Microsoft components your approved environment needs. | Public sources do not establish a complete tool-version matrix or downloadable SDK list. |
| Build, bundle and test instructions | Describes how to create an Xbox build, package it and test it through the approved workflow. | Public sources do not publish the exact commands, target names or console deployment sequence. |
| Xbox developer support | Provides a support route for developers who have passed the access check. | Response times and support-service terms are not stated publicly. |
This boundary matters when estimating work. You can design your game architecture, input model, assets and general Defold systems before approval, but you should not invent Xbox-specific API calls or build scripts from assumptions. Use the supplied extension and current restricted instructions for implementation details.
A practical approval-gated development workflow
Stage 1: prepare the project before console access
Build the game’s portable foundation in the regular Defold environment: scenes, gameplay logic, rendering, audio, input abstraction, save-data design and content pipelines. Keep platform-specific code isolated behind your own interfaces so that an Xbox integration can be added without rewriting the whole project.
At this stage, avoid describing the project as Xbox-ready merely because it runs on a desktop or another supported platform. Console certification behavior, account services and hardware performance still need to be validated in the approved environment.

Stage 2: secure Microsoft approval
Submit the organization through the Microsoft program appropriate to your release plans. Complete the agreements and onboarding tasks Microsoft assigns. If your goal includes full Xbox services and console publication, allow time for game-concept review and Partner Center setup rather than treating those as paperwork after the game is finished.
Stage 3: request and receive Defold resources
Use the approved organization-associated account on the Xbox middleware page, request Defold, and wait for verification. Once granted, distribute the authorized resources only to team members who are permitted under your Microsoft and Defold arrangements. Keep a project note identifying the approved Defold release so build machines do not silently fall back to the public package.
Stage 4: integrate the Xbox extension
Follow the gated Defold documentation for installing and enabling the extension, connecting user management and implementing game saves. Use the required Microsoft development tools identified in those instructions. The public announcement confirms that these integrations exist, but it does not publish their exact APIs; copying examples from an unrelated engine or an older platform guide can produce an invalid build.
Stage 5: build, bundle and test as documented
Use the supplied Defold procedure for creating the Xbox build and bundle. Test the game on the hardware and accounts permitted by your Microsoft program. Check sign-in behavior, user switching, save creation and recovery, suspend/resume behavior, controller handling, error states and performance under the approved test conditions. These are sensible validation areas, but the authoritative pass criteria and submission requirements come from the current Microsoft and Defold materials.
Stage 6: complete Microsoft publishing onboarding
Use Partner Center and Microsoft’s current publishing guide to finish the release process. Concept approval, service enablement, package submission, store metadata, ratings, age classification, certification and release scheduling may all be governed by Microsoft requirements that are outside Defold’s engine documentation. Submit only the package and metadata that your approved account is authorized to publish.

Common mistakes and how to recover
“I installed Defold 1.14.0, but there is no Xbox target.”
The public download does not include the Xbox target. Confirm that Microsoft approval is complete, then request Defold through the Xbox middleware page with the associated organization account. Reinstalling the ordinary download cannot replace that verification.
“The middleware page says I am not eligible.”
Check that you are signed in with the account tied to the approved organization, rather than a personal or unrelated studio account. If the association is correct, ask Microsoft to confirm the organization status and ask Defold to verify the access request. Do not submit a second request under a different entity to work around an account mismatch.
“A public Defold manual says Xbox is unsupported.”
A Defold manual page still contains that statement and describes the Foundation as seeking middleware-provider status. It conflicts with the dated October 12, 2026 announcement and the Defold 1.14.0 release information. Treat that public page as stale for status purposes. After approval, use the current gated Xbox manual and resources supplied for your account rather than relying on the old search text.
“I can build a package, so can I publish it?”
No. A successful engine build proves only that the technical build path worked. Microsoft’s publishing process still includes the applicable developer agreements, Partner Center access and, for full Xbox services and console publishing, game-concept approval. Follow Microsoft’s current submission and certification instructions before planning a public release date.
“Can I use a consumer console instead of a development kit?”
The public onboarding information does not establish a consumer-console substitute. Microsoft describes development-kit access through vendor setup and the Entertainment Developer Store. Use only hardware and accounts authorized by your program, and wait for Microsoft’s instructions about ordering and fulfillment.
How to keep the project compliant while the rules change
- Record the exact Defold release used for Xbox builds: 1.14.0 is the announced supported release.
- Keep Microsoft account ownership, organization membership and Partner Center administration documented internally.
- Separate portable game code from Xbox service calls so an integration update does not force a full rewrite.
- Use the restricted Defold documentation delivered after verification for tool versions, package structure and test steps.
- Check Microsoft’s current publishing guide before every submission; agreements, concept-review rules, service availability and certification requirements can change.
- Do not publish restricted GDK or Defold materials in public repositories or share them with unapproved collaborators.
What is and is not publicly documented
Public announcements establish the access sequence, the Defold 1.14.0 support date, the Xbox extension and high-level integrations, and Microsoft’s broad onboarding stages. They do not provide a complete console setup tutorial, exact build commands, detailed SDK versions, certification checklist or approval timeline. Those details are intentionally handled through the approved developer resources and Microsoft’s current publishing documentation.
That limitation is useful rather than a gap to fill with guesses. Xbox development depends on controlled tools, accounts and hardware. Following an old manual, an unrelated engine tutorial or an unofficial script can create a package that is technically invalid or violates the access terms.

The decision in one sentence
Choose Defold for an Xbox project when you can obtain Microsoft approval, request the gated Defold 1.14.0 resources through the approved organization account, and reserve time for Microsoft’s separate onboarding and publishing process; the public editor alone is not an Xbox development kit.
