Organize links in a way readers can use
Alphabetical order is useful when visitors already know the name they are looking for. Categories are often easier when the links serve different purposes: readers can scan for a subject instead of searching the whole list. You can combine the two by grouping links under clear category headings and alphabetizing entries within each group.

When the list outgrows one page, use pagination
Pagination divides a long list into separate, numbered pages. Each page shows a portion of the entries, while controls such as “Previous,” “Next,” or page numbers let visitors move between portions. A page parameter in a PHP implementation can determine which range of entries to display; the 2012 discussion describes this idea but does not supply a complete, tested script.

Pagination is most useful when a single long page becomes difficult to scan or load. It also creates a maintenance question: if entries move between pages as the list changes, visitors may lose their place. Categories can reduce the need for many numbered pages by narrowing the list first, but categories and pagination can also work together.
Make the page feel part of the site
The original poster wanted the links page to match the site’s design and make it easy to return home. Whatever management approach you choose, keep the site’s usual header, typography, spacing, and navigation where practical. Include a clear route back to the home page and connect the links page from the rest of the site so visitors can find it.

A ready-made script is not automatically integrated just because it runs. Its output may need changes to match the site’s layout, and its navigation should be checked alongside the rest of the page. The forum conversation does not verify that the script discussed remains available, safe, or compatible with current software.

In the discussion, the poster reported attribution and modification terms for the PHP link manager. One participant advised learning HTML, CSS, and PHP or paying someone to adapt the script. That was advice about the particular script in the thread, not a universal requirement: a static page or a CMS-based approach may involve different skills and trade-offs.

A practical decision path
- Estimate how often links will change. If updates are rare and the list is short, direct page editing may be sufficient. If updates are frequent, look for a way to manage entries separately from the page layout.
- Decide how visitors should browse. Use categories when links have distinct subjects; use alphabetical order when names are the most useful way to find an entry.
- Set a page-size threshold. If one page becomes unwieldy, divide the list and add clearly labeled pagination. Decide how categories and page controls will work together.
- Check integration before committing. Ensure the page matches the site’s design, links back to the home page, and is reachable from the rest of the site.
- Evaluate maintenance and risk. For a CMS, verify its current features and fit. For custom PHP or a third-party script, assess the skills, upkeep, security, and licensing involved rather than relying on a decade-old forum recommendation.
