The exact set is LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372. It contains 1,212 pieces and stands over 17 inches (43 cm) tall when complete. LEGO provides the official instructions through the product page, while the LEGO Builder app adds 3D viewing, zoom, rotation, saved sets and progress tracking. The finished model is an elegantly dressed skeleton with brick-built marigolds, printed sugar-skull decorations, a flowered base and two monarch butterflies. Its head and arms can be repositioned, and one butterfly can be held in the figure’s hand.
This is a contemporary LEGO interpretation of La Catrina, not a historical reconstruction or a universal Día de Muertos altar. The most useful approach is to build the documented model accurately, then choose a pose and location that respect both its 43 cm height and the cultural context of the image.

Open the official building instructions
LEGO links the instruction resource directly from the product page. The Builder app is described by LEGO as adding interactive 3D guidance rather than replacing the set identification process.
- Open the product page. Go to the LEGO Ideas La Catrina 21372 listing and confirm that the title and model number match the box or purchase record.
- Select “Building Instructions.” Use the instruction link on that product page to reach the official guide for this set. Avoid relying on an unofficial scan whose model number is unclear.
- Choose a viewing method. You can follow the official instructions in their supplied format, or open the set in LEGO Builder if you prefer an interactive view.
- Use the Builder controls deliberately. LEGO says the app supports 3D instructions, zooming, rotating the model, saving sets and tracking progress. Rotate the digital model before placing parts when a connection or orientation is difficult to read.
- Save your progress. Progress tracking is useful if the build is split over several sessions. Saving the set also makes it easier to return to the same instruction resource.
- Confirm the set number if something looks wrong. If the digital model shows a different character or piece count, exit and select 21372 again rather than trying to reconcile two different sets.
No construction-stage sequence, completion time or difficulty rating has been established for this specific set, so treat the official instructions as the authority for the order of assembly. The practical advice above concerns using LEGO’s documented instruction tools, not a claim about how long the model takes to build.
What the finished model includes
LEGO describes La Catrina as an elegantly dressed skeleton. The visual identity comes from several separate details that are worth checking as you build and pose the model.

The figure and clothing
The central character is a brick-built skeleton wearing an elaborate outfit. Printed sugar-skull decorations appear on the hat and dress. Because those decorations are printed elements in the documented design, they are part of the intended finished appearance rather than stickers that need to be aligned by hand.
Marigolds and the base
Brick-built marigolds decorate the figure and the base. The base is not a plain platform: LEGO describes it as flowered and as including a brick-built monarch butterfly. The flowers frame the figure and make the model read as a display piece from the front as well as from an angle.
Two monarch butterflies
The set includes two butterflies in the display design. One is associated with the base, and LEGO says the second can be placed in La Catrina’s hand. This gives you a choice without modifying the model: keep both butterflies grounded, or use the hand placement to create a more animated pose.
Poseable head and arms
LEGO says the head and arms can be repositioned. That is the main documented articulation, so use it to vary the expression and the direction of attention without adding unsupported alterations or substituting parts from another set.

Build the model without losing track of parts
The instructions determine the official assembly order, but a careful workspace makes a 1,212-piece adult build easier to manage. These are organization practices, not claims about LEGO’s hidden construction stages.
Prepare a controlled workspace
- Use a flat, well-lit surface large enough to keep the current instruction page and loose pieces visible.
- Keep the box, bags and any printed material together until you have confirmed the set number.
- Keep drinks, food and loose craft materials away from the build area so small pieces do not become mixed with unrelated objects.
- Leave enough clear space to set the partially assembled figure aside while you consult the next instruction view.
Work from the instruction view, not from memory
At each step, identify the orientation shown in the illustration before pressing parts together. When a connection is hidden, use Builder’s zoom and rotation controls to inspect it from another angle. The app’s 3D view is especially useful for checking whether a decorated element faces forward, sideways or toward the back.
Keep an intentional pause point
If you stop mid-build, leave the current loose parts with the instruction step or save your progress in Builder. Do not assume that a pile of similar-looking pieces represents a completed section. Returning to a known step prevents the most common restart problem: removing correctly placed parts because the last completed instruction was uncertain.
Check visual details before final placement
Before choosing a display pose, inspect the printed sugar-skull elements, the marigolds, the two butterflies and the base decoration. These are the features LEGO highlights in its product description, so they provide a useful visual checklist that the intended character has been completed.
Choose a display pose
There is no single required pose. The documented choices are the head position, arm positions and placement of the second butterfly. Decide what the figure should communicate from the place where viewers will normally see it.
| Display decision | Available choice | When it works well |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Forward-facing or turned using the documented articulation | Use a forward orientation for a direct portrait; turn it slightly when the model is viewed from an angle |
| Arms | Reposition the arms | Use a balanced stance for a formal shelf display or a more open gesture when the butterfly is in hand |
| Second butterfly | In La Catrina’s hand or arranged on the base | Hand placement emphasizes the figure; base placement keeps the silhouette symmetrical and leaves both hands visually clear |
| Viewing direction | Front or three-quarter angle | Choose the side that shows the printed decorations and flowers without making the figure face a wall |
A straightforward forward-facing pose
Place the head toward the main viewing position, keep the arms in a balanced arrangement and set the second butterfly on the base. This makes the flowered platform and both butterflies easy to see and is a sensible starting point for a desk or shelf.
A more animated hand-held butterfly pose
Turn the head slightly, reposition one arm and place the second butterfly in the hand as LEGO allows. Check the result from the normal viewing distance; a hand-held butterfly can be visually lost if the arm is turned directly behind the body.

A three-quarter pose
If the model will sit near a room corner, rotate the head and arms toward the side from which visitors approach. Keep the base aligned with the shelf edge so the marigolds and base butterfly remain visible rather than being hidden behind the figure.

Plan the shelf or desk location
The only published size requirement is vertical: LEGO lists the completed figure as over 17 inches (43 cm) tall. Measure the clear height of the intended location before building or moving the finished model. Allow room above the listed height so the hat and upper decorations are not pressed against a shelf above them.
Desk display
A desk places the model at eye level for a seated viewer and makes the hand-held butterfly easy to notice. Keep the figure outside the area where notebooks, monitors or frequently moved objects could strike it. LEGO specifically presents desk placement as an option, but it does not publish a required desk depth or an independent stability test.
Shelf display
A shelf keeps the base and marigolds at a consistent viewing height. Measure the vertical opening and the usable surface rather than assuming a standard bookcase will fit a 43 cm figure. Check that the full base sits on the shelf instead of extending over an edge; no official shelf-depth measurement is stated.
Seasonal display
You can bring the model forward for Día de Muertos and return it to a room display afterward. LEGO describes the set as suitable for year-round room decor. A seasonal arrangement can include the model as one object among other decorations, but the LEGO figure should not be presented as a complete or universally correct ofrenda.
Lighting and nearby objects
There is no documented lighting requirement. Use the room’s existing light to reveal the printed sugar skulls and marigolds, and avoid positioning the model where glare makes those details unreadable. Do not attach candles, incense or other heat sources to the LEGO model; the product information does not certify it for heat exposure.
Understand La Catrina’s cultural history
La Catrina is not synonymous with every Día de Muertos practice. The figure has a particular history within Mexican visual culture, while Día de Muertos observance includes many regional, family and community traditions.

Posada’s Calavera Garbancera
The Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) traces the image to José Guadalupe Posada’s satirical print of the Calavera Garbancera. In that original context, the skeleton was a pointed social image rather than simply a decorative costume. Read INAH’s account, “La Catrina, un ícono de Día de Muertos”, for the institutional history of the image.
How the familiar elegant figure developed
INAH explains that the image was later renamed La Catrina and that Diego Rivera depicted the figure dressed elegantly in his mural. The recognizable character therefore reflects reinterpretation over time. LEGO’s dressed skeleton belongs to that continuing visual tradition, but it is a contemporary brick-built depiction rather than an exact reproduction of Posada’s print or Rivera’s mural.

INAH’s historical explainer emphasizes the observance’s complex history. Its article “El origen del Día de Muertos” is useful when you need more than a single-origin explanation. Avoid claiming that all families use the same dates, colors, altar objects or rituals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Display the model respectfully around Día de Muertos
A respectful display starts by describing what the LEGO set is: a commercial, contemporary interpretation of La Catrina intended as decoration. It should not be described as an authoritative altar, a required household object or a substitute for community-specific practice.
Use altar elements as examples, not rules
In one INAH museum presentation, an altar display includes flowers, papel picado, sugar skulls, pan de muerto and dishes associated with the deceased. The account appears in “El Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones conmemora el ‘Día de Muertos con Playmobil’”. Those objects can help explain why viewers recognize floral and skull imagery, but that particular display is not a universal shopping list or a requirement for every household.
Keep the LEGO model distinct from a family ofrenda
If you place La Catrina near family photographs, food or memorial objects, identify the LEGO figure as decoration and follow the family’s own instructions for the ofrenda. Do not move personal offerings to make the model the visual centerpiece, and do not claim that the set reproduces the practices of a particular community unless people from that community have said so.

You can accurately say that LEGO chose marigolds, printed sugar skull decorations and monarch butterflies for this design. Avoid turning those design choices into unsupported statements about what every marigold, skull or butterfly means in every Día de Muertos context. The model can prompt a conversation about La Catrina’s history without standing in for the full observance.

Use the model beyond the holiday
LEGO’s product description says, “Display it all year round on a desk or shelf as a striking piece of room decor.” That is LEGO’s marketing guidance, not a cultural judgment. A year-round display is appropriate when you present the set as a design object and remain clear about its contemporary interpretation.
Rotate the pose rather than rebuilding
Because the head and arms are repositionable, you can change the visual emphasis for a new location or season without dismantling the figure. Move the second butterfly between the hand and base when you want a small change that does not alter the main build.
Keep the cultural explanation with the object
If guests ask what the figure represents, explain the Posada-to-Rivera development of the image and distinguish La Catrina from Día de Muertos as a whole. Linking to the two INAH historical articles above gives visitors a reliable starting point instead of relying on a simplified caption.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The instructions do not match the box
Stop and verify the full model number, 21372, on both the product listing and the set packaging. Return to the official LEGO product page and open its Building Instructions link again. Do not continue with a guide for a similarly named set.
The Builder view is difficult to read
Use the app’s documented zoom and rotation controls to inspect the connection from another angle. Save the set and progress before closing the app so you can return to the same point. If the 3D view still conflicts with the official step, use the supplied instruction resource and check the model number rather than guessing at a connection.
The figure looks different from the product image
Check the pose before assuming a missing part. LEGO permits head and arm repositioning, and the second butterfly may be in the hand or on the base. Return those elements to a forward-facing, balanced arrangement and compare the printed sugar skulls, marigolds and base butterfly with the product image.
The intended shelf is too short
Do not force the model into the space. LEGO lists the height as over 17 inches (43 cm), so measure a taller location or use a desk instead. No official depth or stability specification is available; leave a complete, level surface rather than balancing the base on an edge.

Treat the model as decoration, not as a complete ofrenda. Día de Muertos practices vary, and the INAH examples are descriptions of particular presentations rather than universal instructions. Follow the traditions and preferences of the people whose loved ones are being remembered.
