How to Build an Open Lakehouse on Your Laptop

You can build a small open lakehouse on a laptop with Docker Compose, Apache Spark, Apache Iceberg, a catalog fixture, and S3-compatible local object storage. Start with Apache Iceberg’s official Spark quickstart: it brings up the core pieces needed to create and query a table, without first adding Kubernetes, streaming, or workflow orchestration.

The point of this lab is to see how the layers work together. When a query runs, the engine reads table metadata and data files through the catalog; the files stay in a host-mounted warehouse so they remain visible outside the containers.

What makes this a lakehouse?

A lakehouse combines data files in open formats with table metadata and operations commonly associated with database tables. In a local setup, each component has a distinct job:

  • Parquet stores the table’s columnar data files.
  • Apache Iceberg tracks the table over those files, including metadata and table operations.
  • A catalog records which tables exist and helps engines locate them.
  • A query engine, such as Spark or Dremio, reads and writes the table.
  • S3-compatible object storage holds the files. For a laptop lab, it can run in a container and store data in a host-mounted directory.

These are roles, not interchangeable names: Parquet is a file format, Iceberg is a table format, the catalog resolves tables, and the engine performs the work. Alex Merced’s September 10, 2026 tutorial illustrates the layers with a two-container object-store and Dremio lab, and discloses that he works at Dremio. That tutorial is one implementation; the Apache Iceberg quickstart offers a Spark-based alternative.

Apache Iceberg Spark quickstart Spark, an Iceberg REST catalog fixture, and an S3-compatible local object store, coordinated with Docker Compose. Learning Iceberg table creation and Spark reads and writes. A focused learning example, not a complete production platform.
Lakehouse at Home Spark, Iceberg, Kafka, Airflow, PostgreSQL catalog metadata, and SeaweedFS object storage; Unity Catalog is optional. Practicing a broader local development workflow. More services and requirements to configure and manage.
MinIO Openlake Spark, Kafka, Trino, Iceberg, Airflow, and related workflows on Kubernetes with MinIO. Learning a multi-service Kubernetes deployment. Requires a Kubernetes cluster, kubectl, MinIO, and the MinIO client.
Dremio and MinIO laptop lab A two-container example using S3-compatible object storage and Dremio to write an Iceberg table. Following a short, guided demonstration of the layers without a cloud account or Spark cluster. Vendor-authored and specific to Dremio; it is not a neutral performance comparison.

For a first table write and query, use the official Spark quickstart. Add Kafka only for streaming practice, Airflow only for orchestration practice, and Kubernetes only when deploying onto Kubernetes is itself part of what you want to learn. The cited projects do not provide directly comparable laptop benchmarks.

Set realistic laptop expectations

Lakehouse at Home publishes project-specific hardware guidance: 8 GB RAM, 20 GB disk, and 4 CPU cores as its minimum recommendations; 16 GB RAM, 50 GB disk, and 8 CPU cores as its recommended configuration. These figures were checked in October 2026 and describe that repository, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a workload will run smoothly.

If the built-in drive lacks workspace, an external SSD is an option; no cited source establishes a required model or speed, or a guaranteed performance benefit.

The official Iceberg quickstart calls for the Docker CLI and Docker Compose CLI. If you choose the broader Lakehouse at Home project instead, its listed software prerequisites are Docker, Java 17 or later (Java 21 for Spark 4.1), Python 3.10 or later, and Poetry.

Build the Spark and Iceberg lab

Apache Iceberg’s official quickstart provides the Compose configuration and entry points for Spark SQL, the Spark shell, PySpark, and a notebook server. Follow its current instructions and inspect the configuration before starting: service images, versions, credentials, port exposure, and mount paths can change.

  1. Get the official quickstart configuration. Use the setup from Apache Iceberg’s Spark quickstart. The documented stack includes a Spark service, an Iceberg REST catalog fixture, and an S3-compatible object-store service on a Compose network.
  2. Check the host and local storage. Confirm that Docker and Docker Compose are available and that you have room for the images and data. The quickstart maps a host-side ./warehouse directory into the Spark container; it also configures a notebook mount.
  3. Review the Compose file. Understand which ports are exposed and what credentials the demo configuration uses. Demo credentials are not suitable for an exposed or production deployment.
  4. Start the services. From the quickstart directory, run docker-compose up, as documented there. The configuration includes an object-store health check and a bucket-creation service; wait for startup and readiness rather than assuming every container is usable the moment it appears.
  5. Open a Spark interface. For Spark SQL, run docker exec -it spark-iceberg spark-sql. The quickstart also provides spark-shell and pyspark entry points. Its notebook server is available on the locally configured port.
  6. Create and test a small Iceberg table. Follow the quickstart’s create-table, write-data, read-data, and catalog instructions. Begin with a few rows, run a query, and check that its returned values match what you inserted. This keeps the first exercise focused on the table lifecycle rather than on loading a large dataset.
  7. Check the local files. Inspect the host-side ./warehouse directory to confirm that the lab wrote files there. The directory mount is why the data is visible on the laptop as well as inside the container.
  8. Test persistence. Stop and restart the stack using the quickstart’s Compose instructions, then query the table again. Confirming the data remains in the mounted warehouse demonstrates persistence across container lifecycles; it does not create a backup against laptop or disk failure.

  • Streaming: Add Kafka when the exercise is about producing and consuming event streams into lakehouse tables.
  • Orchestration: Add Airflow when the goal is scheduling and coordinating repeatable workflows.
  • Another query engine: Add one to compare engine behavior or practice a particular tool, not because a first Iceberg table requires several engines.
  • Kubernetes: Move to a project such as MinIO Openlake when learning cluster-based deployment is the goal. It is a larger setup than a first Compose tutorial and brings its own prerequisites.

Container images, software releases, and project instructions change. Check the current official documentation and pin versions appropriate to your learning setup rather than assuming an example configuration will stay unchanged.
