A genuinely offline hostel-slang translator is a feasible prototype, not a verified Infosys app or approved campus tool. Android supports on-device text recognition, language identification and translation, but those capabilities do not automatically understand local slang. The project would need a narrow language scope, a carefully curated glossary or custom model, and tests with connectivity disabled after all required models have been prepared.
What this project would—and would not—do
The idea is to help a trainee understand unfamiliar phrases without sending conversations to a cloud service. A useful first version might accept typed text, or scan text from a camera image, then provide a literal translation alongside a short explanation of a slang expression when one is recognized.

This is a proposed technical project, not an existing Infosys Mysore application. No campus-specific slang dataset or model is established here. Trainee discussions online can help identify the kinds of questions newcomers have about hostel life, weekend activities and restrictions, but they are user-generated and do not establish official campus rules.
Infosys describes its Mysore site as a large corporate training facility. An indexed description of the official video “The Mysore Experience” says it can train 16,000 people at once; the video listing did not open during research, and the year is not stated there. Treat that as a qualified description, not a current occupancy count. Infosys’s 2020-era account of training at Mysore and the COVID-era move to virtual learning is historical context, not evidence of current operating practice.

Why translation and slang decoding are separate jobs
Translate the words first
Android’s ML Kit and CameraX codelab demonstrates a workflow that recognizes text on-device, identifies a language and translates it. The codelab was last updated June 17, 2020, so it is evidence that this kind of pipeline is possible, not a current implementation recipe or a guarantee of language coverage on a particular phone.
Translation models may need to be downloaded before translation can run. Therefore, “offline” should mean the supported flow works without network access after setup—not that the app never needs connectivity at any point in its lifecycle.
Interpret slang with local knowledge
A general translation engine can translate the words in a phrase while missing its social meaning, tone, abbreviation or context. A campus-specific glossary could map a phrase to a cautious explanation, but it would require informed contributors, review and a way to handle meanings that vary by group or situation. A custom on-device model is another possibility: Android documents LiteRT for deploying custom machine-learning features, but that does not demonstrate a working Mysore slang model or establish its quality.

Choose a narrow first use case
Decide whether users will type phrases, scan printed text, or use another input mode. Select a small number of language pairs based on actual intended users. Do not imply that the first release covers every language spoken on campus.

Build the ordinary on-device pipeline
Use Android’s documented on-device recognition, language identification and translation capabilities where they support the chosen flow. A physical Android device is needed for the cited camera-to-text codelab workflow. Prepare any required translation or recognition models before going offline, and make model availability visible in the interface.

Add a separate slang layer
Start with an opt-in, curated glossary rather than claiming that ordinary translation automatically decodes hostel slang. Each entry should include the phrase, language or languages, a plain-language explanation, context notes, and a review status. Offer a correction path; do not automatically convert users’ private conversations into training examples.

Evaluate a custom model only if the glossary is insufficient
LiteRT is a documented Android route to deploying custom ML features. A custom model would still need suitable, authorized examples and evaluation by people familiar with the relevant usage. Compare it with the simpler glossary on coverage, device compatibility, latency, storage, battery use, update process and correction quality; no approach is established as superior without testing.

Test strict offline behavior
After setup, disable Wi-Fi and mobile data and test every supported flow, including a cold start, missing-model handling, error messages and any saved glossary entries. Check that the app does not silently fall back to cloud inference. Android documents both network-free Gemini Nano use on supported devices and hybrid inference modes, but support depends on device and feature; for a strict offline design, configure and verify an on-device-only path rather than assuming all phones behave alike.

Make storage and deletion understandable
Explain what, if anything, the app saves; keep personal conversation history off by default; provide deletion controls; and avoid collecting identifying examples for a demo without informed consent and appropriate authorization.

What “100% offline” should mean to users
Use the claim only with a clearly stated boundary. If users must download models or glossary updates first, say that setup or update connectivity may be required. Once prepared, the claimed features should complete on the device with network connectivity disabled. A practical test should include first launch after setup, normal use, and failure cases such as an unavailable model. Device-specific restrictions and model support should be stated instead of promising compatibility with every Android phone.
Android’s Gemini Nano documentation describes some network-free generative AI on supported devices; its hybrid-inference documentation also distinguishes on-device and cloud modes. These are implementation options, not proof that this specific app is offline or that every supported language pair is covered. Disabling cloud fallback and verifying behavior offline are necessary to support a strict claim.
Privacy matters even when processing stays on the phone
Offline processing can reduce transmission, but it does not by itself settle what the app stores, who can access a device, or whether people consented to contribute examples. Infosys’s FY2025–26 ESG privacy report says the company applies privacy-by-design practices and conducts privacy impact assessments for generative-AI deployments involving personal data. That is relevant context for responsible design, not approval or sponsorship of this project.
Infosys’s Personal Information Privacy Statement lists employee information categories that may include personal, work, digital-access, health-and-safety and attendance information, and says a detailed employee privacy notice is provided at onboarding. A prototype should keep its data collection narrower than its translation capability: do not collect identifiable trainee conversations by default, make retention choices explicit, and obtain appropriate consent and authorization before using contributed examples.
