A dependable Obsidian review system can start with two built-in plugins: Daily notes creates or opens a note for the current date, while Templates supplies the repeated structure. Configure those first, then add weekly or monthly notes only if your workflow genuinely needs them. Weekly and monthly periods are not features of the core Daily notes plugin; they require a separate community extension such as Periodic Notes, whose current installation steps and settings should be checked in its active listing before you configure it.
What this workflow gives you
The workflow has a small, deliberate foundation:
- Daily capture: one predictable note for each date.
- Consistent structure: a template inserts the headings, prompts or checkboxes you use repeatedly.
- Recurring review: optional weekly and monthly notes, handled separately from the core daily-note feature.
Obsidian’s official Daily notes documentation describes a note that opens for today’s date and is created when it does not yet exist. By default, the file name follows YYYY-MM-DD. You can change both the destination folder and the date format, so the same process works in a vault’s root or in a dedicated archive.

This approach avoids configuring a large plugin stack before you know what you need. Start with daily capture, use it long enough to discover the gaps, and then decide whether another recurring period is worth maintaining.

Daily notes and Templates are built-in Obsidian features. Core plugins are included with Obsidian and can be enabled or disabled in settings, as the Obsidian Help home page explains. Periodic Notes is a separate community plugin identified in search results as an extension for weekly and monthly notes. It should not be described as part of Daily notes, and its exact current release, compatibility and setting names are not established by the official daily-note documentation.

The core path is fully documented by Obsidian. The extension path is a choice to investigate after the daily workflow is useful; do not assume that its commands, folder rules or syntax match the core plugin.
Set up Daily notes and Templates
1. Enable the two core plugins
- Open Settings.
- Go to Core plugins.
- Enable Daily notes.
- Enable Templates if you want a repeated layout inserted automatically.
If either plugin is already enabled, leave it on and continue. You do not need Sync or Publish for this workflow; those are separate add-on services listed by Obsidian.
2. Choose where new daily files will live
- In Settings, open Daily notes.
- Find the setting for the new-file location.
- Leave the location at the vault root for the smallest possible setup, or select a dedicated folder such as a daily archive.
A dedicated folder keeps date files together when the vault contains many other notes. The root is reasonable when you want the shortest path and have only a few notes. Make the choice before you begin capturing; moving files later is possible, but it creates an avoidable cleanup task.
3. Set the date format deliberately
Daily notes use a date format to build the new file name. The default is YYYY-MM-DD, which sorts chronologically in ordinary file listings. The Daily notes settings let you change that format. Obsidian’s documented date-format options can also place notes in subfolders when the format is written to include folder separators. Use a format that remains understandable outside Obsidian, and record the convention somewhere in your vault if other people will use it.
Changing the format affects files created in the future; it does not automatically rename the daily notes you already made. If you change conventions later, decide whether the older files should remain where they are or be migrated as a separate housekeeping project.

Create a practical daily template
Keep the first version small
A template is an ordinary note containing the text you want inserted into a new daily note. Create it in a location you can recognize as templates, then give it only the structure you will actually use. A short template is easier to complete than a dashboard full of prompts.
For example, a first template could contain:

- What should move to tomorrow?The date heading and task checkbox reflect the kind of example shown in Obsidian’s Daily notes guidance; they are not requirements. Replace the headings with prompts that match your work. If you do not review a section, remove it rather than allowing an abandoned checklist to become visual noise.
Use built-in template variables when they help
The Templates documentation describes predefined variables including {{title}}, {{date}} and {{time}}. Templates replaces these variables when the template is inserted. Date and time formats can be changed in the Templates settings, so the value shown in a heading or timestamp does not have to use the same display style as the daily file name.
Use {{date}} for a visible date heading, {{time}} when a capture needs a time marker, and {{title}} when you want the inserted note’s title. Keep variables inside the template file; they are instructions for insertion, not text you normally type into the finished daily note. Point Daily notes at the template
- Open Settings.
- Go to Daily notes.
- Find Template file location.
- Select the template note you created.
The selected template is used the next time a daily note is created. It does not retroactively insert headings into notes that already exist. If you revise the template later, future daily notes receive the new version while older notes retain their original contents.

Open and use today’s note
Once the location, date format and template are set, opening the current note is intentionally simple. Obsidian documents three dependable routes:
- Use the Open today’s daily note command from the Daily notes controls or ribbon.
- Open the Command palette and run the command labeled Open today’s daily note.
- Assign a hotkey to the command if you want a keyboard-first routine.
If today’s file exists, Obsidian opens it. If it does not, Obsidian creates it using the configured location and date format, then applies the selected template. This “open or create” behavior means you do not need to check the folder manually before starting work.
A daily operating loop that stays manageable
Morning: open, orient and choose
Open today’s note before creating extra pages. Read the template’s headings, then add only the priorities that matter for the day. A single task checkbox can be enough; the template is a starting point, not a demand to fill every section.
During the day: capture without reorganizing
Put quick observations, decisions and unfinished work in the current note. The value of a date-based file is that the capture has a known home immediately. Avoid stopping to design a permanent structure for every thought. When something deserves its own long-lived note, you can create or link that note later; the daily page remains the chronological record.
End of day: close the loop
Use the review prompts to identify what happened, what remains open and what should move forward. Keep the review short enough to repeat. If a prompt consistently produces no useful answer, delete it from the template rather than carrying it indefinitely.

Organize dates and folders without overengineering
There are two independent decisions in Daily notes settings:
- New-file location: the folder where Obsidian creates a daily note.
- Date format: the pattern used for the note’s name and, when documented folder separators are included, its subfolder path.
For a minimal vault, keep one folder and use YYYY-MM-DD. For a larger archive, choose a dedicated daily folder and a format that groups dates into subfolders. Choose one convention and use it consistently; a complicated hierarchy does not improve a review that you cannot maintain.
Remember that the daily-note command is date-driven, not title-driven. Renaming a file manually can make it harder to recognize as part of the sequence, particularly if the name no longer matches the configured format.

Daily notes answer “What did I capture on this date?” They do not, by themselves, create a separate weekly or monthly file. If your review requires a page for a week or a month, you need an additional mechanism.

Treat that as a separate installation and configuration decision. Before enabling it, open its current official community listing and confirm that its release supports your Obsidian version. Verify the current commands, folder settings, date-format rules and template options there; those details are not established by the core Daily notes documentation.
A safe adoption sequence is:
- Run the core daily workflow for a while and identify the review question that daily notes cannot answer.
- Decide whether you need a weekly note, a monthly note, or both. Do not enable every cadence by default.
- Read the extension’s current instructions and compatibility information before installation.
- Configure one additional period first, using a template that has a clear purpose.
- Open a test period and confirm its file location, name and template before relying on it for an important review.
If the extension’s current instructions differ from the labels above, follow the extension’s documentation rather than assuming that a core-plugin setting has the same name.
Design weekly and monthly reviews around decisions
Weekly review
A weekly note should help you make a decision about the next week, not duplicate every line from seven daily notes. Useful sections might include completed priorities, unresolved items, notable decisions and the next week’s focus. Keep the headings aligned with what you actually inspect; the exact layout is yours to define in the periodic template.
Monthly review
A monthly note is useful when you need a longer horizon: projects that changed direction, recurring obligations, or commitments that should be reconsidered. It can collect the outcomes of weekly reviews without forcing you to reread every daily capture. Create it only when that higher-level decision is part of your real routine.

Do not make every period mandatory
More files create more maintenance. If daily notes are enough, stay with the core workflow. Add a weekly or monthly layer only when it reduces the time needed to see patterns or choose priorities. A periodic note that is always empty is evidence that the cadence does not belong in your system yet.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
“Open today’s daily note” does not create a file
- Confirm that Daily notes is enabled under Settings → Core plugins.
- Open Settings → Daily notes and check the new-file location.
- Look in that folder using the configured date format rather than searching only the vault root.
- Run the command again. The command opens an existing file or creates one when absent.
The note appears, but the template is missing
- Confirm that Templates is enabled.
- In Settings → Daily notes → Template file location, select the intended template note again.
- Make sure you are creating a new daily note. Selecting a template does not rewrite older notes.
- Open the template note itself and check that its content is saved where you expect it to be.
The date looks wrong
- Check the Daily notes date format for the file name.
- Check the Templates date and time format if the visible heading or timestamp is wrong.
- Remember that file naming and inserted text are separate settings; changing one does not necessarily change the other.
Files are scattered across unexpected folders
Review both the new-file location and the date format. A format that includes documented folder separators can create subfolders automatically. If that hierarchy is not what you want, use a single folder and a plain date format, then decide separately how to handle files already created under the old convention.
Weekly or monthly commands are unavailable
That is expected in a core-only setup. Daily notes provides the daily cadence; weekly and monthly commands come from a separate community extension. Check whether the extension is installed, enabled and compatible, then follow its current instructions for the command names and settings.
Keep the system maintainable
- Change one setting at a time: alter the folder or format, then create a test note before changing another.
- Keep templates readable: a future-you should understand every heading without consulting documentation.
- Separate capture from review: the daily note is where events land; weekly and monthly notes exist to make higher-level decisions.
- Review the template occasionally: remove prompts that no longer produce useful information.
- Protect the vault independently: synchronization or publishing services are optional add-ons, not prerequisites for Daily notes or Templates. Use the storage and backup method appropriate for your vault.
The result is a workflow that starts with two built-in plugins, has a predictable path for every day, and leaves recurring periods optional. That order matters: establish a habit with the core tools before adding another plugin whose settings and compatibility may change.
