The playlist can repeat indefinitely, but it cannot keep a broadcast live by itself: the computer or server running FFmpeg, its power and internet connection, and YouTube’s ingest all need to stay available.
Prepare videos that FFmpeg can concatenate
The concat demuxer reads a text file and presents its listed media files one after another. It can avoid an intermediate re-encode when the files have compatible stream layouts, but it is not a general-purpose fix for a collection of unrelated video exports.

Check the media before building the playlist
Compare the video and audio streams in every episode: stream count, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rate, and audio layout. For a straightforward playlist, make those properties consistent across files. For example, if some episodes have audio and others do not, or their stream parameters differ, normalize them to a common profile first or use FFmpeg’s concat filter when you need to re-encode. The filter takes more setup and encoding work; the demuxer is the simpler option when the inputs already match. FFmpeg’s FAQ discusses when to use each approach.
Keep the episodes in a folder accessible to the machine running FFmpeg. The example below assumes the playlist and videos are in the same folder, with simple filenames that do not contain apostrophes.

Create the playlist file
- Open a plain-text editor and create a file named
playlist.ffconcat. - Put
ffconcat version 1.0on the first line exactly as shown. It must be the first line for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. - Add one
fileline per episode, in the order you want them to play. Use paths relative to the playlist or full paths. - Save the file as plain text, preferably UTF-8.

file 'episode-03.mp4'FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so each file begins after the preceding one. Incorrect duration metadata can produce timing artifacts or gaps, so check the actual transitions during your test rather than assuming that a playlist which opens correctly will play cleanly end to end.
Choose the stream settings for the actual videos
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection between the encoder and Google’s servers. Its settings and bitrate chart can change, so check the current encoder guidance in YouTube Help before starting.

Match bitrate and keyframes to resolution and frame rate
Choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current chart for the output resolution, frame rate, and codec—not from a generic command example. As listed in YouTube Help on October 3, 2026, H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and a 14 Mbps recommended bitrate. These are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream.

Example command for compatible 1080p30 H.264/AAC inputs

-f flv 'RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY'This is a starting configuration, not a tested command or a universal preset. It re-encodes the video as H.264 and the audio as AAC; it assumes the playlist contains compatible inputs with video and audio streams. Replace RTMPS_SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY with the server URL and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public log.
-re paces file input at its natural playback rate; without it, FFmpeg can read files faster than real time. -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Neither option keeps the encoder process, host, network, or YouTube ingest running if one of them fails.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live and test the full playlist
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in the Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that stream into your encoder command or private configuration. Do not share the key.
- Start FFmpeg and open the stream’s preview in the Live Control Room. YouTube creates the watch page when the encoder starts sending.
- Test representative scenes with motion and audio, including transitions between episodes. Watch the preview and stream-health messages for problems before announcing a permanent broadcast.
- Run a speed test against the intended upload bitrate. YouTube Help recommends testing upload bitrate; the connection must sustain the outgoing stream, and a speed test alone does not prove that the broadcast will remain healthy.
Plan for a stream that really stays up
An infinite playlist is not an always-available service. FFmpeg can exit, a computer can reboot, power or networking can fail, or YouTube can report unhealthy ingest. Monitor FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s stream health, and arrange a restart method that fits the host—for example, an operator who can restart the process or a supervisor configured to bring it back up. Test your recovery procedure before relying on it. These are operational safeguards, not a claim that any particular setup has a measured uptime.

Choose where FFmpeg runs

A mini PC may be suitable for a local setup, but suitability depends on the resolution, encoding choice, and actual workload. Test the workload on the machine you plan to use rather than assuming a particular computer can handle it.

Decide whether to broadcast continuously or in sessions
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream running continuously for 24 hours or longer should not rely on that automatic archive guarantee for a complete replay. If you need a full archive, keep a separate local recording or schedule shorter sessions with planned transitions. Separate sessions create more operational work and interrupt continuous viewing, but give you a way to stay within the stated archive window.

A traditional fairy tale may be old, but a particular animated adaptation, narration, illustration, or music recording can still be protected. Use material you have the rights to broadcast publicly and to retain in any intended archive. YouTube Help says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content; a match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. If you have a license for third-party content, ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist where applicable: a license alone may not prevent an interruption when allowlisting is required.
Decide the intended audience based on the actual animation and presentation, then apply YouTube’s current audience designation and content policies. “Animated fairy tales” by itself does not establish a single audience classification; that depends on the works and who they are intended for.

- FFmpeg rejects the playlist format: Confirm
ffconcat version 1.0is the exact first line, with no blank line or other text before it, and that the playlist was saved as plain text. - An episode fails to open: Check that its path is correct from the playlist’s location and that FFmpeg can access the file. Try a full path to distinguish a path problem from a media problem.
- Playback breaks or has a gap at a transition: Recheck stream counts, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and duration metadata across the files. Normalize mismatched inputs or use the concat filter with re-encoding.
- YouTube reports unhealthy stream settings: Verify the output codec, CBR configuration, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against the current YouTube encoder guidance. Do not assume the illustrative command suits a different resolution or frame rate.
- The stream stops when the playlist reaches its end: Confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the input option-i, and inspect the FFmpeg log for an error or process exit. The option repeats the input; it cannot recover a failed host, connection, or ingest. - FFmpeg is running but YouTube does not show a healthy preview: Check the server URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm the key was not copied with extra characters, and review Live Control Room health messages and the upload connection.
- A stream is interrupted despite a license: Check with the rights holder whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches.
