How to Build an Emergency Kit for Your Car or RV

A useful vehicle emergency kit is a portable set of communication, visibility, first-aid, repair, warmth, food, water and navigation supplies matched to your vehicle, passengers and climate. Start with the roadside items listed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), then add seasonal equipment and RV-specific supplies that you can safely use.

There is no single government-approved kit or universal RV checklist. FEMA and NHTSA publish recommendations, while your owner’s manuals determine which lifting, tire, electrical, fuel and towing procedures apply to your particular car, motorhome, travel trailer or fifth wheel.

What an emergency kit needs to do

A breakdown kit has four jobs: help you communicate, make you visible to other road users, keep people stable while help is coming, and enable only the repairs you can perform safely. It is not a substitute for roadside assistance, vehicle maintenance or emergency services.

FEMA describes a vehicle kit as a smaller, portable version of broader emergency supplies. Contents should reflect the people traveling with you, including children, older adults, people who need daily medication and pets. A kit for a short urban commute will not need the same capacity as one for a remote RV trip.

  • Visibility: a flashlight, warning flares or a white flag and a whistle.
  • Personal care: a first-aid kit, required medicines, water, food and sanitation supplies.
  • Vehicle support: jumper cables, a tire-pressure gauge, a jack with a suitable ground mat and basic repair tools.

Keep heavy or sharp equipment restrained so it cannot become a projectile in a crash. Place the kit where occupants can reach it without unloading luggage or entering traffic.

Core supplies for almost any car

NHTSA’s roadside list is a practical starting point. The table below turns those categories into a packable checklist. Choose sizes and quantities according to the number of occupants, trip length and available storage.

Category Pack Use and selection notes
Communication Phone and vehicle charger Keep the phone charged before departure and carry the cable that matches it. A charger is useful only if the vehicle’s electrical system is working, so retain another way to signal for help.
First aid First-aid kit Include supplies appropriate to your passengers and replace used or expired items. Do not add medicines that conflict with a traveler’s treatment plan.
Lighting Flashlight and spare batteries Use it for inspections and signaling after dark. Test the light before trips and store batteries so they cannot leak onto other equipment.
Warning Road flares or a white flag; whistle Use warning devices only when you can deploy them without standing in a live traffic lane. A whistle can attract attention when visibility or phone coverage is poor.
Starting Jumper cables Match cable length and clamp size to your vehicle. Read the owner’s manual before connecting cables; some vehicles have designated jump points or battery restrictions.
Tires and lifting Tire-pressure gauge; jack; ground mat Confirm that the jack fits the vehicle’s approved lifting points and that the mat is stable on the surfaces where you travel. Never work beneath a vehicle supported only by a jack.
Basic repair Basic repair tools Carry tools for tasks you understand, such as tightening a fastener or securing a loose panel. Do not improvise a repair that could affect steering, braking, fuel or high-voltage systems.
Food and water Nonperishable food and drinking water Pack enough for the passengers and likely delay. Rotate food and water so heat, freezing and age do not leave you without usable supplies.
Medication Necessary medicines Keep essential medication with you rather than in a compartment that may become inaccessible after a crash. Follow the prescribing instructions and replacement schedule.
Navigation Maps Paper maps remain useful when a phone battery, signal or navigation service fails. Mark your usual routes and likely stopping points before a long trip.
Warmth and comfort Emergency blankets, towels and coats These reduce heat loss and help keep wet occupants insulated while waiting for assistance.

FEMA’s broader emergency-supply guidance also identifies a battery-powered or hand-crank radio with NOAA Weather Radio alerts, spare batteries and sanitation supplies. Adapt those items to the vehicle when weather exposure, distance or passenger needs justify the extra space.

Build the kit in a deliberate sequence

  1. List the people and animals who travel. Record the number of adults and children, accessibility needs, daily medicines, allergies and pet requirements. This determines water, food, first-aid and sanitation quantities.
  2. Identify the vehicle’s recovery points. Read the owner’s manual for the battery location, jump procedure, jack points, spare-tire equipment, tire-pressure specification and towing instructions. If you cannot safely follow a procedure, plan to call a professional rather than adding tools you do not know how to use.
  3. Choose one accessible container. Use a durable, closable container or several labeled pouches. Keep the flashlight, warning device, phone charger, first aid and medicines reachable from the passenger area; store heavier tools low and secure.
  4. Pack communication and visibility first. Add the charged phone and charger, flashlight, spare batteries, flares or white flag and whistle. Test the light and check that warning equipment is intact.
  5. Add medical, hydration and food supplies. Put in the first-aid kit, required medicines, drinking water, nonperishable food and sanitation items. Mark expiration dates on a simple inspection list.
  6. Add tire, starting and repair equipment. Include jumper cables, a tire-pressure gauge, the correct jack and ground mat, plus vehicle-appropriate tools. Verify that the spare tire, if fitted, is inflated and that its lug key or locking-wheel-nut adapter is present.
  7. Add warmth and navigation. Pack emergency blankets, towels, coats and maps. For winter travel, continue with the cold-weather section below.
  8. Practice the safe tasks. Locate the lifting points, battery terminals and spare-tire release before an emergency. Practice in a driveway, not on a highway shoulder, and stop if a procedure is unclear.
  9. Inspect before trips and after use. Replace consumed food, water, batteries, medicines and first-aid items. Re-secure the container after every inspection.

Cold-weather additions

FEMA’s winter checklist adds equipment for snow, ice, low temperatures and a vehicle that cannot move. These supplies are most useful when selected for local conditions and checked against the vehicle manual.

Traction equipment is not interchangeable. Check the owner’s manual for chain clearance, approved tire sizes, attachment points and any restrictions. A shovel or mat should be sized for the space available and strong enough for the surface you expect to encounter.

FEMA advises staying off roads when possible during a winter storm. If you become trapped in a car, stay inside rather than walking into blowing snow or poor visibility. Keep the exhaust area clear of snow before running the engine for heat, and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for ventilation and idling.

NHTSA’s May 29, 2025 road-trip safety guidance also recommends planning ahead and keeping the fuel tank close to full whenever possible. Fuel is a practical reserve when traffic, weather or a closure extends a journey.

Adapting the kit to an RV

“RV” includes motorhomes and towable units such as travel trailers and fifth wheels. A motorhome combines the driving and living spaces; a towable RV depends on a separate tow vehicle. That distinction affects where supplies belong, which battery or tire you may need to reach, and which equipment you can safely operate.

RV situation How to organize the emergency supplies Manuals and checks
Motorhome Keep a roadside pouch in the driving area and a second supply container in the living area. The driving pouch should remain accessible while belted occupants are seated. Review the chassis manual and the RV manual for lifting points, jump connections, tire procedures, fuel systems, electrical systems and towing limits.
Travel trailer Keep critical communication, first aid, warning, food, water and warmth supplies in the tow vehicle or another place reachable without entering the trailer. Use the tow vehicle manual for its tires, jack and battery. Use the trailer manual for coupling, breakaway equipment, tires, electrical connections and approved recovery points.
Fifth wheel Separate equipment for the pickup or other tow vehicle from supplies stored in the fifth wheel. Do not assume a trailer compartment is reachable after a coupling or roadway problem. Check the tow vehicle and fifth-wheel manuals for hitch, landing-gear, tire, electrical and recovery procedures.

Keep a flashlight, first aid, medicines, water, food and warm clothing in the occupied vehicle rather than in an exterior compartment that may be blocked, damaged or inaccessible. Secure loose items inside the RV and inspect exterior storage after rough travel.

The RV Industry Association explains that NFPA 1192 addresses RV fuel systems and equipment, fire and life safety, plumbing and vehicular requirements. Standards and their applicability depend on the RV type and can change, so treat the relevant manual and current manufacturer guidance as the authority for your unit. A roadside kit does not replace inspection of propane or fuel systems, smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms, tires, brakes, lights, hitch equipment or electrical connections.

Choose supplies by fit, not by a universal shopping list

When deciding between two items in the same category, use four tests:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Vehicle and climate fit: the item must work with your tire size, battery arrangement, ground conditions and expected temperatures.
  • Safe operation: every adult expected to use it should understand the procedure, limitations and hazards.
  • Storage and access: it should be protected from damage but reachable without unloading the vehicle or standing in traffic.
  • Inspection burden: choose supplies you will actually check, recharge, rotate or replace.

These are selection criteria, not product-test results. NHTSA and FEMA recommend categories of supplies; they do not certify a particular preassembled kit or brand.

Maintenance schedule that prevents an empty kit

Set a recurring inspection rather than waiting for a trip. At each check:

  • Charge the phone power source and test the flashlight, radio and spare batteries.
  • Inspect jumper cables, flares, the white flag, whistle and tools for corrosion, cracks or missing parts.
  • Check food, water, medicines and first-aid contents for expiration, leakage or heat damage.
  • Verify that coats, blankets, towels, boots and winter equipment are dry.
  • Confirm that maps and vehicle/RV manuals are present and readable.
  • Check the spare tire, jack, ground mat, tire-pressure gauge and lug-nut adapter.
  • After a winter trip, dry and clean the shovel, traction mats, chains and tow rope before storing them.
  • Re-secure the container so it cannot move during hard braking.

Inspect before long journeys, at the start of winter and whenever the vehicle changes. Replace an item immediately after use rather than leaving a note to do it later.

What to do when a breakdown occurs

  1. Control the vehicle. If possible, move to a safe location away from moving traffic, turn on hazard lights and set the parking brake.
  2. Assess the hazard. Fire, fuel odor, smoke, damaged power lines, unstable terrain or a high-speed roadway shoulder are reasons to leave repair work to professionals.
  3. Contact help. Use the phone and share your location, direction of travel, vehicle description and passenger needs. Use a map if digital positioning is unavailable.
  4. Make the vehicle visible. Use the flashlight, flares, white flag or whistle only from a safe position and in accordance with the device instructions.
  5. Protect occupants. Use water, food, medicines, blankets and coats while waiting. In winter conditions, remain inside the vehicle if you are trapped, as FEMA advises.
  6. Attempt only familiar work. A tire check, cable connection or other task belongs on the list only when the owner’s manual permits it and you can keep clear of traffic and moving parts.

For an RV, do not separate a towable unit from its tow vehicle or move landing gear, jacks, electrical connections or fuel equipment without following the applicable manual. Call specialized assistance when the procedure is uncertain.

Common kit mistakes and their fixes

Buying a sealed kit and never tailoring it

A preassembled package may omit daily medicines, enough water, maps, pet supplies or the tools that fit your vehicle. Use any packaged contents as a starting inventory, then add and remove items based on passengers, climate and the owner’s manual.

Putting everything in the trunk or an exterior RV compartment

A collision, trailer separation or blocked hatch can make the main container unreachable. Keep a small critical pouch in the occupied vehicle and secure the larger tool and supply container separately.

Carrying equipment no one can use

A jack, chains, tow rope or jumper cables can create new hazards when used at the wrong lifting point, attachment point or battery terminal. Practice safe procedures and call for assistance when the manual does not cover the situation.

Ignoring batteries, expiration dates and heat

Flashlights, radios, food, water, medicines and first-aid materials degrade. Date your inspection, rotate consumables and store temperature-sensitive items as the manufacturer directs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting the tow vehicle

In a travel trailer or fifth-wheel combination, the tow vehicle is the roadside vehicle. Its jack, spare, battery, maps and warning equipment must be maintained even when the RV carries additional supplies.

A final packing checklist

  • Charged phone, vehicle charger and paper maps.
  • First-aid kit, necessary medicines, water, nonperishable food and sanitation supplies.
  • Flashlight, spare batteries, whistle, flares or a white flag.
  • Jumper cables, tire-pressure gauge, correct jack, ground mat and basic vehicle tools.
  • Emergency blankets, towels, coats and, for winter, warm clothing and boots.
  • Winter shovel, ice scraper, snow brush, sand or cat litter, traction mats and approved chains or snow tires when relevant.
  • Vehicle and RV manuals, plus equipment-specific adapters such as a locking-wheel-nut key.
  • Supplies secured and reachable from the occupied vehicle.
  • Fuel kept close to full when practical, especially before severe-weather or remote travel.

Review the list whenever your vehicle, passengers, route or season changes. The best kit is the one that matches the equipment you drive, remains accessible and contains supplies you have inspected and know how to use.
