A reserve for essential expenses can, however, reduce the chance that you will need to sell investments during a downturn to pay an unexpected bill. Start by setting a target based on your household costs, automate an amount you can sustain, and keep the money in an accessible deposit account at an insured institution.
Set a target based on essential expenses
Add up the monthly costs you would need to cover if your income stopped or an unexpected expense arrived. Focus on essentials such as housing, utilities, food, insurance, transportation, and minimum debt payments. Your household’s likely shocks—such as an insurance deductible, car repair, or irregular income—can also help you decide whether to aim above a basic target.

The FDIC says financial experts generally recommend at least six months of living expenses in a federally insured product, such as a savings account or certificate of deposit. Treat that as a commonly cited benchmark, not a universal rule or an individualized recommendation. A smaller first milestone can make the goal more manageable; you can continue building toward a longer-term target.

Set a recurring transfer for an amount that fits an ordinary month, rather than relying on an ambitious contribution you may have to cancel. You can schedule an automatic transfer after payday or direct part of your paycheck into savings. The FDIC illustrates the effect of consistency: saving $20 every other week adds up to $520, plus interest, in a year. That is an example of contributions, not a forecast of interest earned.

A tax refund, work bonus, or other windfall can speed up progress when one is available, but a dependable routine is the foundation. After using the reserve, make a plan to replenish what you withdrew.
Keep the reserve accessible and separate
A separate savings account can make emergency money easier to identify and less tempting to spend on everyday purchases. Before opening or using an account, check that the institution is FDIC-insured and review the account’s minimum balance, fees, withdrawal conditions, and access methods. Account rates and terms vary and can change, so compare current terms rather than assuming a particular account is best.

Different deposit accounts can have different trade-offs. A savings account is designed to hold savings and may earn interest. A money market deposit account is also a deposit account, but its minimums or transaction limits may matter for your intended use. A certificate of deposit (CD) holds money for a set term and may impose an early-withdrawal penalty, which can make it a poor fit for money you might need immediately. Compare access and restrictions alongside interest.

Understand what deposit insurance does—and does not—cover
Eligible deposits at FDIC-insured banks are covered up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, under the standard insurance amount stated by the FDIC. Coverage depends on the depositor, institution, account ownership category, and applicable rules; check the FDIC’s guidance for your circumstances. Deposit insurance does not protect investments from market losses.
That distinction matters when markets are unsettled: an emergency reserve is meant to be available for near-term needs, while investments can rise or fall in value. Keeping the reserve in an appropriate deposit account may reduce the need to sell investments to meet an unexpected expense, but it cannot prevent income loss, guarantee a particular return, or remove other financial risks.

A practical way to put the plan in place
- Estimate your essentials. Total the monthly costs you would prioritize during an income interruption, then account for household-specific unexpected expenses.
- Pick a first milestone and a longer-term target. Use the FDIC’s six-month benchmark as a reference point, not a mandatory amount for every household.
- Set an automatic contribution. Choose a sustainable amount and schedule it after payday, or direct part of your paycheck into savings.
- Select an accessible insured deposit account. Verify the institution’s FDIC status and check fees, minimums, withdrawal terms, and ways to access funds.
- Review the plan after a withdrawal. Decide how to rebuild the reserve, and adjust the recurring contribution if your essential costs or income change.
