On WordPress.com, AI can help create a site and make follow-up edits to supported templates and template parts; you can then review and refine those changes in the editor. The AI instructions below are specific to WordPress.com, while the block-theme editing workflow applies to WordPress sites using the Site Editor.
First, check whether your theme supports the Site Editor
In your site dashboard, look for Appearance → Editor. WordPress.org’s Site Editor documentation says the Site Editor is available with an active block theme. It lets you edit site-wide areas, including headers, footers, and templates, with blocks.
If you see Customize but not Editor, WordPress.com identifies the active theme as a classic theme in its Site Editor guide. Classic themes may provide different customization controls, so the block-theme steps here may not match your dashboard. Check your theme’s documentation rather than assuming the Site Editor controls apply.
Open the reusable header or footer
In the Site Editor, find Patterns or the template-parts area, then open the Header or Footer part. Labels and their locations can differ between WordPress versions and hosted interfaces.

A template part is a reusable region, not a one-off copy of a header or footer. When you edit a part, the change appears in the templates that include it. WordPress.org explains this behavior in its Template Part block documentation. At the theme level, a top-level block template can include a part through the Template Part block; developers can also work with theme files organized under /parts, as described in the WordPress Theme Handbook. For most site owners, the visual editor is the more direct way to change the blocks.
Build a header that stays useful across pages
Start with the essentials: a site logo or title and navigation to the pages visitors need most. WordPress.com’s header editing guide covers those common elements, as well as adding blocks and reordering navigation.

- Use a logo or title that clearly identifies the site.
- Keep navigation focused on meaningful destinations, such as About, Services, or Contact.
- Add search or a call-to-action only if it serves a clear purpose for your site.
- Check the layout at narrower widths so the logo and navigation remain usable on mobile.
Edit the actual logo, links, and navigation blocks rather than replacing the header with a static image. Blocks keep the content available for later changes in the editor.
Build a footer with helpful secondary links
Use the footer for information visitors may need but that does not belong in the primary navigation. Depending on the site, that could include secondary page links, contact details, or social links. These are design options, not universal legal requirements.

Add the content as blocks in the Footer template part. Because the part is reusable, editing its text or links updates the templates that include it. Keep links purposeful and verify their destinations before publishing.

WordPress.com documents two relevant routes: an AI builder for creating a site from instructions and continuing to customize it, and an Agent that can edit templates and template parts such as headers and footers. The AI builder is documented as a paid-plan feature in WordPress.com’s AI site-building guide. The Agent’s Site Editor workflow is described in its Site Editor guide; the AI Editor guide says that feature requires a block theme.

These are WordPress.com features, not a general promise that AI tools on every WordPress host or theme can edit site parts. Check your account’s plan eligibility, theme compatibility, and AI feature settings before relying on them.
Give the AI a specific first brief
For the AI builder, describe the site’s purpose, name, style, and the content you need. Then request small, targeted refinements instead of asking for several unrelated changes at once. For example:

In the site-wide header, keep the logo on the left, add links for About, Services, and Contact, and make the navigation easy to use on mobile. In the footer, add a short contact line and links to the same key pages.

Ask the Agent to edit a specific template part
If you have the WordPress.com Agent or AI Editor available, open the Site Editor or AI Editor and name the target clearly—for example, ask it to update the site-wide Header template part or add secondary links to the Footer template part. WordPress.com says the Agent can edit templates and template parts; you can also make manual block edits alongside AI-assisted changes.

Preview, correct, and save
- Preview the site. Confirm the header and footer appear on the pages and templates where you expect them.
- Check the details. Follow each navigation and footer link, confirm the logo is correct, and make sure the text is legible.
- Review different widths. Check desktop and mobile layouts, then adjust block settings or content if the arrangement is awkward.
- Save in the editor. WordPress.com documents saving AI-assisted design changes and making manual edits alongside AI changes; use the save controls shown in your editor.
