The most reliable way to build an atmospheric stylized lighthouse scene is to solve composition before detail, then construct a reusable asset kit that can be assembled and recolored inside Unreal Engine. Start with a simple Blender blockout, validate the camera and proportions in Unreal, author tileable materials and trims in Substance 3D Designer, sculpt scalable wooden modules in ZBrush, and add atmosphere through restrained water shading, vegetation variation, particles, lighting and post-processing.
What the workflow is designed to achieve
This workflow comes from Environment Artist Albert Serrano’s production breakdown in an 80 Level interview published on 9 October 2026. It is not a benchmark or a hardware specification: the breakdown publishes no polygon counts, frame rates, prices or other numerical performance targets. Its value is the order of decisions. Each stage reduces the risk of polishing the wrong asset or locking the camera too late.

The scene is treated as a modular real-time environment rather than a one-off illustration. The lighthouse remains the visual anchor, while water, cliffs, timber, plaster, stone, plants and small signs of life support its scale and mood. Reuse is deliberate: a small set of pieces and materials can create multiple arrangements, including a second camera angle, without requiring an entirely new environment.

Define the image you are trying to make
Begin with the concept that establishes the lighthouse, surrounding water and the desired emotional tone. Serrano started from a concept by Gustav Nordgren and gathered additional visual references before modeling. Your reference board should answer practical questions rather than merely collect attractive pictures:

- Where is the camera in relation to the lighthouse: near the waterline, offshore or above the rocks?
- Which surfaces repeat visibly, and which objects deserve unique silhouettes?
- Is the water calm, wind-rippled or actively moving?
- Which color relationships define the style: pale plaster against dark stone, warm timber against cool water, or another controlled contrast?
- What must remain readable in the final camera, even when atmospheric effects are added?
Keep the brief focused on composition and hierarchy. A stylized scene can tolerate simplified geometry, but it cannot tolerate an unclear focal point. Mark the lighthouse, the strongest leading lines, the horizon or water boundary, and the areas that can remain quiet.
2. Block out in Blender, then validate in Unreal Engine
Use primitives, not finished assets
Build the first version in Blender with simple cylinders, boxes, planes and rough terrain masses. Represent the lighthouse tower, roof, platform, rocks, pier or retaining walls, major vegetation groups and the water surface. Do not sculpt damage, bevel every edge or paint final textures at this stage. The purpose is to test spatial relationships.
- Create the lighthouse at a believable relative scale and place the water plane and major landforms around it.
- Set a provisional camera in Blender that resembles the intended final shot.
- Export the blockout to Unreal Engine and recreate or import the camera there.
- Check the lighthouse’s apparent height, the distance from camera to subject, the amount of visible foreground and the position of the horizon.
- Move the camera and large masses until the composition reads without detailed materials.
Moving the blockout into Unreal early is important because the final image is judged through the real-time camera, field of view, lighting response and atmospheric depth of the target engine. This pass locks proportions, camera distance and composition before expensive authoring begins. It also shows which parts of the environment need the most attention and which will be peripheral.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake composition decisions before modular production
Save a stable blockout version before replacing primitives. If the lighthouse only works from one narrow camera position, identify that constraint now. If a second angle may be useful later, leave circulation space and modular attachment points where another shot can be assembled without rebuilding the hero structure.
3. Plan the custom modular set
Separate hero pieces from repeatable pieces
List assets by how often they will be reused. The lighthouse’s distinctive silhouette, major door, lantern room or a unique rock may require bespoke modeling. Walls, beams, planks, braces, ledges, steps and retaining sections are better candidates for modules. This distinction prevents two common problems: spending too long on hidden detail and building a “modular” kit whose pieces only fit one location.
| Asset group | Recommended treatment | Primary decision |
|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse silhouette and defining architectural features | Unique or semi-unique meshes | Preserve the focal shape and readable proportions |
| Wooden beams, planks and supports | Reusable ZBrush modules in several sizes | Provide enough texel density for scaling and recombination |
| Walls, plaster and stone surfaces | Tileable materials and trims | Control repetition through placement, tint and decals |
| Small props | Simple ZBrush models | Keep silhouettes and context while avoiding unnecessary complexity |
| Plants | Atlas-based cards or grouped meshes | Vary color in Unreal rather than authoring many duplicate textures |
Sculpt wooden modules in ZBrush for reuse
Serrano sculpted a modular set of wooden pieces in different sizes in ZBrush. The critical requirement was sufficient texel density: a piece that looks acceptable at its original size can become visibly soft when scaled up or placed close to the camera. Build variants that cover the dimensions your blockout actually needs, then test the largest intended use in the Unreal camera.

- This plastic model requires assembly and painting. Adhesives, tools, paints, etc., sold separately
- 1/160 scale unpainted plastic assembly kit
- Lighthouse completed: Total length 8.25 inches (21 cm)
- Includes a base that resembles the small islands of a lighthouse guardian house, dinghy and shaking shipwreck
- LED light included (batteries not included)
Vary length, thickness, end cuts and a few surface characteristics, but keep attachment logic predictable. Modules should align cleanly enough to form rails, platforms, braces or wall framing. A small family of compatible pieces is more useful than many incompatible one-offs.
4. Author tileable materials and trims in Substance 3D Designer
Choose repetition deliberately
Identify surfaces that appear throughout the scene: plaster, stone, timber grain, roof material and other broad finishes. Build these as tileable materials in Substance 3D Designer, then create trims for edges, bands and transitions. Tileables keep the environment coherent and make expansion faster, while trims provide controlled direction and scale where a flat repeated texture would look featureless.
Keep unique detail for places where it changes the story or silhouette. A repeated wall can gain individuality from its geometry, vertex tint, a few decals and lighting rather than from an entirely unique texture set for every section.
Check scale and direction in the target camera
Test the material on a module in Unreal rather than judging it only on a neutral preview. Plaster marks that are too large can make the lighthouse look miniature; stone layers running in the wrong direction can flatten a wall. Adjust the material parameters or mesh mapping before duplicating the asset across the scene.
5. Build stylized water that stays lightweight
Start from a controlled material, not maximum complexity
Water was a key part of the desired look, and the target was a stylized material lightweight enough for smooth Unreal Engine operation. Serrano followed a Ghislain Girardot tutorial for a more complex water material, then made small adjustments to fit the scene. The useful lesson is not to reproduce a tutorial mechanically: begin with the visual behavior you need and remove features that do not improve the shot.

Keep the water system centered on a small set of understandable controls. Typical controls for this kind of setup include surface color, opacity or blend strength, wave direction, wave scale, normal intensity and movement speed. The exact implementation can differ, but each parameter should have an obvious visual job.

Use parameter changes for variation
Duplicate materials only when a new behavior is required. Slightly changing a few parameters can distinguish water near rocks from open water while keeping the scene coherent. Reserve more expensive effects for the camera-facing area. Verify the material from the final viewpoint and at the expected viewing distance; a technically elaborate surface can still read as flat if its scale is wrong.
6. Create props and a vegetation atlas
Keep props simple but contextually specific
Serrano shaped props mainly in ZBrush and kept them simple while retaining enough detail to remain interesting and relevant. Use that balance as a rule: a crate, rope fixture, sign, bucket or piece of equipment needs a recognizable silhouette and a reason to be present, not a dense sculpt that disappears at the final camera distance.
Place props to explain how the lighthouse is used and maintained. Cluster them near doors, platforms and paths, then leave breathing room around the focal structure. Random scattering creates noise; contextual placement creates story.

Build a ZBrush-to-Substance Painter vegetation atlas
For vegetation, make a ZBrush atlas containing the plant types needed by the scene, then texture the atlas in Substance 3D Painter. An atlas reduces material overhead and makes it practical to cover multiple plants with a shared texture layout. Organize the atlas so each plant has clear margins and a predictable pivot or card arrangement.
Add Unreal Engine color parameters so plant colors can be varied directly in the engine. Controlled variation is more convincing than copying one green value everywhere, but keep hue and brightness within the palette established by the concept. Use the parameters to separate foreground plants from distant groups, not to introduce unrelated colors.
7. Expand the environment with modules, blending and decals
Reuse the kit to build a second area or camera
Once the principal shot is solid, test a second camera angle. Serrano expanded the environment with simple modular elements, reusing existing assets and tileable materials to build the new area quickly. This is a practical validation of the kit: if every new view requires bespoke geometry, the set is not doing enough work.

Blend plaster and stone with vertex color
For wall transitions, Serrano used the same plaster material with a different tint through an extra Vertex Color channel. This creates an intermediate layer between plaster and stone, allows painted variation in other areas and controls how dark the tint becomes. The method keeps the material family consistent while giving artists local control.
- Assign the shared plaster material to the wall.
- Expose a vertex-color-driven tint in the material.
- Paint or edit the extra Vertex Color channel where the transition should appear.
- Adjust tint color and darkness until the plaster-to-stone boundary reads as intentional rather than a hard texture seam.
- Inspect the result under the final lighting, because a tint that looks subtle in isolation may become dominant in shadow.
Add decals where they support history
Bird-dropping decals made in Photoshop added character and surface variation. Small decals work best when they reinforce exposure, ledges and nesting locations. Keep them sparse and directional; placing the same mark uniformly across every wall turns a storytelling detail into a pattern.
8. Make the scene feel alive with motion
Use layered, readable particle systems
The scene gained fish underwater, seagulls and subtle wind-line particle systems. These elements should be staged by depth and attention. Fish can occupy the underwater region, seagulls can establish open air and scale, and wind lines can suggest movement without becoming graphic overlays. Keep each system quiet enough that the lighthouse remains the subject.
Animate the surfaces that viewers expect to move
Movement in the water and seaweed connects the particle systems to the environment. Even restrained motion helps distinguish a living coastal scene from a static diorama. Vary timing and direction rather than synchronizing every element. The goal is a sense of a shared wind and water system, not visible procedural repetition.
9. Light, grade and add caustics last
Establish a clear key light
A Directional Light remained the main source in Serrano’s setup. Use it to establish the broad time-of-day direction and the primary value structure before adding local lights. The lighthouse should separate from its background through shape and value, not only through saturation.

Use Point Lights for local interest
Point Lights can add localized visual interest around entrances, platforms, windows or areas where a material transition needs emphasis. They should support the main direction rather than flatten it with competing highlights. Place them while viewing the final camera, because a light that helps a side wall may distract from the tower.
Finish with post-processing and water caustics
Post-processing was adjusted for color, saturation and stronger contrast. Make these changes after the material, motion and lighting structure is stable. Large grading changes can hide problems in value hierarchy, so check the ungraded view periodically.
Water caustics strengthen the underwater atmosphere. Restrict them to surfaces and areas where the water relationship is visible, and tune their contrast so they read as refracted light rather than a projected pattern. Caustics are a finishing layer; they cannot repair a weak water silhouette or an unclear camera.
How the main approaches trade off
| Decision | Strength | Risk to manage |
|---|---|---|
| Blender blockout before detail | Fast composition changes and early control of camera distance | Detail work must wait until proportions are proven |
| Reusable ZBrush modules | Consistent texel density and rapid recombination | Visible repetition if variants, orientation and spacing are not changed |
| Tileable Designer materials | Efficient coverage of repeated surfaces and quick expansion | Scale, direction and repetition can become obvious |
| Parameter-driven Unreal variation | Many controlled looks without duplicate texture sets | Unbounded values can break the established palette |
| Simple stylized water | Lower real-time cost and easier art direction | Too little variation can make the surface look static |
| Particles, motion and caustics | Strong sense of place and life | Effects can compete with the lighthouse or reveal repetition |
Production checklist and troubleshooting
If the lighthouse feels too small
- Return to the Unreal blockout and verify camera distance and field of view before remodeling.
- Compare doorways, platforms, beams and vegetation against one another, not against an isolated asset preview.
- Check the scale of plaster, stone and wood details; oversized patterns can make the building appear miniature.
If the scene looks like a repeated kit
- Rotate and regroup modules before creating new geometry.
- Use the material’s tint controls and vertex-color variation only where a transition is needed.
- Vary vegetation color through the Unreal parameters and break long edges with props or decals.
If water dominates the frame
- Reduce its contrast or movement before adding more detail.
- Keep the strongest wave or caustic behavior near the area that supports the composition.
- Recheck the camera and horizon in the original blockout view.
If atmosphere becomes visual noise
- Lower particle density and separate fish, birds and wind lines by depth.
- Reduce Point Light competition with the Directional Light.
- Grade color and saturation after removing effects that do not improve the focal read.
A practical order of operations
- Collect the concept and references, then define the lighthouse, water and visual hierarchy.
- Block out the full environment in Blender.
- Import the blockout into Unreal Engine and lock proportions, camera distance and composition.
- Classify hero assets, reusable modules, tileable surfaces and simple props.
- Build Designer materials and trims for repeated surfaces.
- Sculpt wooden modules and props in ZBrush with reuse and texel density in mind.
- Create the vegetation atlas in ZBrush, texture it in Substance 3D Painter and expose controlled color parameters in Unreal.
- Assemble the main shot, then test a second angle with reused modules.
- Blend wall materials with vertex color and add restrained decals.
- Add water movement, seaweed, fish, seagulls and wind-line particles.
- Set the Directional Light, add selective Point Lights, then adjust post-processing and caustics.
- Review the final camera for repetition, scale errors, distracting effects and unresolved material seams.
What to learn from the process
The strongest lesson is to finish the decision chain rather than chase detail indefinitely. Serrano described frustrating moments when something was not working as an important part of improvement and encouraged artists to start projects and commit to finishing some of them. His conclusion was: “In my opinion, the process is ultimately more important than the final result, as the finished piece is simply the outcome of everything you have learned and worked through along the way.”
For this lighthouse workflow, finishing means carrying one composition from blockout through materials, modular construction, water, vegetation, motion and lighting. The final image benefits because every layer was judged against the same camera and the same visual hierarchy.
