You do not need Unity, Unreal, or another game engine to make an AI-powered interactive experience. For most projects, a browser interface built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is the simplest starting point. Your application code owns the controls, layout, state, validation, loading indicators, and error handling; an AI model supplies language, vision, classification, or generation when the user reaches a step that benefits from it.
Choose a different route only when the destination demands it: use an MCP server and optional component when the experience should run inside ChatGPT, combine on-device and cloud inference when privacy or connectivity matters, and investigate WebXR when spatial interaction through a headset is central. The reliable order is interaction first, platform second, and model execution third.

What an AI interactive experience is without a game engine
A game engine is a tool for rendering scenes, handling a real-time loop, managing physics, and packaging games. Those capabilities are useful when you need a 3D world, but they are not prerequisites for an experience in which someone asks a question, changes a setting, receives generated content, compares options, or guides an AI through a task.
A conventional web stack can provide the same interaction loop:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- HTML provides the controls and semantic structure.
- CSS provides layout, visual hierarchy, animation, and responsive behavior.
- JavaScript responds to events, updates the interface, and maintains application state.
- A server keeps credentials and privileged operations away from the browser and calls an AI model or other backend capability.
- An AI model contributes language, vision, structured output, or another capability at defined points in the flow.
OpenAI’s MCP server and UI quickstart demonstrates this pattern with a basic to-do workflow: the interface is contained in one HTML file, while a Node SDK exposes server-backed capabilities through an MCP endpoint. The visual layer is optional; a server can expose useful tools without returning a widget.
This distinction prevents a common design mistake: allowing the model to own the whole product. The model should not decide whether a button is enabled, whether a form is valid, how a loading state appears, or which state transition is legal. Those are deterministic responsibilities of your application. The model should receive a well-defined request and return a bounded result that your code can display, reject, transform, or ask the user to confirm.
Define the interaction before choosing a platform
Write the experience as a single user-action and response loop before selecting a framework or provider. A useful sentence has four parts: what the visitor does, what the AI contributes, what the interface changes, and what must persist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Question | Example for an interactive guide | Implementation owner |
|---|---|---|
| What does the user do? | Enters a question and selects a topic | Browser form and event handlers |
| What does the AI contribute? | Produces an answer in a known structure and suggests a follow-up | Model request and server-side validation |
| What changes on screen? | A result card appears, controls become available, and the selected topic is highlighted | Application state and rendering code |
| What persists? | Conversation turns, selected topic, and an explicit user preference | Chosen storage layer or server session |
Decide the minimum useful state before writing prompts. Typical state includes the current input, request status, latest result, error message, selected filters, and a history identifier. If a value affects what the user sees, represent it explicitly rather than hoping the model will remember it.
Separate model work from interface work
Use a deterministic action for every operation that must be predictable: validate a required field, disable a submit button during a request, cancel an obsolete request, show an error, or ask for confirmation before a consequential action. Ask the model for interpretation or generation, then validate its response before applying it to the interface.
When a workflow has several tools, separate data-fetching or processing tools from render tools. OpenAI’s MCP UI guidance recommends this separation for integrations that attach widgets to tool calls. It lets a client retrieve or transform data even when it cannot render your custom component, and it makes a non-visual fallback possible.
Build a browser-first prototype
A normal web page is the accessible default because it gives you a linkable, inspectable interface and does not require a headset or a host-specific submission process. Build one complete interaction before adding multiple agents, elaborate animation, or a large component library.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write the state diagram. List the initial state, the submitting state, the success state, the empty-result state, the validation error, the network error, and the retry path. A small diagram or table is enough.
- Create a static interface. Make the form, result area, status message, and controls with HTML and CSS. Ensure keyboard users can reach every control and that the result area has a meaningful heading.
- Use a mock response. Return a local object that looks like the eventual model response. This exposes layout problems before network latency and model variability complicate debugging.
- Add the real server call. The browser sends only the user input and required state to an endpoint you control. The server performs authentication, calls the selected model or tool, validates the result, and returns the smallest response the UI needs.
- Handle the full request lifecycle. Show progress, prevent duplicate submissions, restore controls after success or failure, and provide a retry that does not silently duplicate an irreversible action.
- Persist deliberately. Keep temporary display state in memory, and choose a server session or storage mechanism only for information the next request truly needs. Explain to users what is retained.
- Test without the model. Exercise success, malformed output, timeout, permission failure, empty input, and cancellation using fixtures. Your interface should remain understandable when the model is unavailable.
The browser-side shape can remain simple. The following pseudocode illustrates the ownership boundary without committing you to a particular SDK:
async function submitQuestion(question) {
if (!question.trim()) return showValidation('Enter a question.');
setStatus('loading');
try {
const response = await fetch('/api/answer', {
method: 'POST',
headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' },
body: JSON.stringify({ question, topic: state.topic })
});
const result = await response.json();
if (!response.ok || !result.answer) throw new Error('Invalid response');
state.answer = result.answer;
renderAnswer(state.answer);
setStatus('ready');
} catch (error) {
setStatus('error');
showRetry();
}
}
The example deliberately leaves the model call behind /api/answer. Do not place a long-lived secret or privileged tool credential in client-side JavaScript. The cited MCP quickstart establishes the server-backed pattern; it is not a complete security guide for every public web application, so apply your own authentication, authorization, rate limiting, logging, and data-retention requirements.

Choose where the experience runs
The same interaction can be delivered through several hosts. Select the route based on where people should encounter it and what kind of interface they need.
| Route | Best fit | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone browser app | A conventional link or website with your own navigation and deployment | You choose the hosting, identity, storage, and model integration; those choices are outside the cited documentation |
| ChatGPT-hosted app with the Apps SDK | An app whose logic and interface should run inside ChatGPT | The SDK is described as a preview; developer access, submissions, and current requirements can change |
| MCP server with optional UI | Tools that should work across compatible hosts, with a widget only when visual interaction helps | Clients may not render your component, so tools must remain useful without it |
| WebXR browser experience | Spatial or mixed-reality interaction where a headset is part of the product | Device support, input methods, performance, and distribution need separate validation |
| Hybrid on-device and cloud inference | Experiences balancing local context or offline behavior with capabilities that need a server model | Web on-device support and feature coverage are currently limited by browser and model availability |
Standalone web app: the default path
Choose this route when the experience should be a normal website rather than a feature inside another host. You own the URL, navigation, visual language, authentication flow, and release process. A static page can call a server endpoint, while a richer application can use components and a client-side router; neither requires a game engine.
A practical architecture
- Presentation layer: forms, cards, controls, focus management, responsive layout, and accessible status messages.
- Application layer: state transitions, validation, retries, cancellation, optimistic or confirmed updates, and feature detection.
- AI gateway: server-side prompt construction, model selection, output validation, tool permissions, and usage limits.
- Data layer: only the records needed for continuity, audit, personalization, or user-requested export.
Keep the AI gateway narrow. For example, return an object containing an answer, a list of suggested actions, and an identifier rather than returning an unbounded block of markup. Render the object with your own templates. This reduces the chance that generated text changes the layout or introduces an unsafe interpretation of a command.
When this route is preferable
- The audience should be able to open a link without installing software.
- You need a branded or highly custom interface rather than a host-defined conversation surface.
- You need to combine AI with ordinary forms, dashboards, media, or account features.
- You want freedom to change providers or execution modes behind a stable application interface.
The reviewed sources do not establish a best hosting provider, deployment price, model vendor, or universal browser-support matrix. Choose those from current documentation for your target audience instead of treating a sample architecture as a provider recommendation.
ChatGPT-hosted experiences with the Apps SDK
OpenAI’s help page describes the Apps SDK as a preview that lets developers design both the logic and the interface of an app that runs inside ChatGPT. It is built on MCP, can connect to an existing backend, and can be tested with Developer Mode. This is a distinct distribution choice, not a requirement for ordinary browser apps.
Use this route when
- The conversation is the primary navigation and your app adds structured actions or visual results to it.
- Your existing backend already exposes the operations the app needs.
- You are willing to follow host-specific testing and submission requirements.
Plan for preview status
A preview product can change its APIs, eligibility rules, review process, or supported UI capabilities. Check the current official Apps SDK page before committing a launch plan. The help page says submissions are being accepted and that monetization details will be shared in the future; it does not provide a current monetization schedule. Do not promise revenue, approval, or a particular commercial arrangement.
Design for a host, not just a page
Use the same separation as a standalone app: deterministic controls and state transitions in your code, model interpretation behind a server, and a component that can explain its current state. A ChatGPT-hosted component should still have an understandable empty state, loading state, error state, and confirmation step. Avoid assuming that every compatible host exposes the same extensions or screen size.
MCP tools with an optional interactive component
Model Context Protocol lets a server expose tools to a compatible client. The visual component is optional. OpenAI’s MCP server and UI quickstart explicitly marks the component step as optional, and its guidance says tools should remain useful without a custom UI so clients that do not render components can still complete workflows.
Tools-only design
Choose tools-only when the result is naturally textual, the operation is occasional, or the client already supplies a suitable interface. Return structured data where possible so a host can summarize it, display it, or pass it to a later step. Document required inputs, possible errors, and side effects.

Add a widget when structure matters
Add a component when people need to inspect several fields, compare alternatives, edit values, navigate a collection, or confirm a consequential action. The component can be returned for selected tool calls and rendered in an iframe in ChatGPT. Keep the tool response meaningful even if the iframe is not available.
Separate fetch, process, and render operations
One tool can retrieve records, another can transform them, and a render-oriented tool can supply a visual representation. This separation makes permissions easier to reason about and provides a fallback for clients that support tools but not widgets. It also lets a user request a fresh result without recreating the entire visual state.
Choose a component size that matches the task
OpenAI’s MCP UI guidance describes three useful presentation patterns:
- Inline: use an inline card for a focused result or a small set of actions that belongs beside the conversation.
- Fullscreen: use a larger surface for maps, editing canvases, dense comparison, or any task that needs sustained attention.
- Picture-in-picture: use a persistent small view for an activity that should remain visible while the conversation continues.
Start with inline UI and expand only when the task demonstrably needs more space. Implement feature detection and a fallback for ChatGPT-specific extensions; never assume that a compatible host provides every extension or that a component can rely on a fixed viewport.
Hybrid on-device and cloud AI
Firebase’s guide to hybrid web experiences describes a pattern in which the browser attempts on-device inference and falls back to a cloud-hosted model when local capability is unavailable or insufficient. The documented reasons to consider local inference include privacy, local context, no-cost inference, and offline functionality. Those are stated use cases, not a guarantee of performance, privacy, or zero cost for every project.
Compare the execution modes
| Concern | On-device inference | Cloud inference |
|---|---|---|
| Where computation runs | On the user’s device and supported browser | On a provider’s servers through your backend or approved client path |
| Connectivity | Can support offline operation after required assets and permissions are available | Requires a network connection for the request |
| Privacy goal | Useful when local context should remain on the device | Data handling depends on your service configuration and provider terms |
| Documented web support | Chrome on desktop; the Firebase guide calls out Chrome 139 or higher for its documented Prompt API setup | Broader than the local path, subject to your chosen service and client support |
| Feature coverage | Single-turn text generation, supported text and image input, and structured output are documented; several advanced features are not | Can cover more involved chat, multimodal input, and tool use when the selected model and integration support them |
| Fallback behavior | Preferred on-device mode can fall back to cloud for unsupported features in the documented approach | Acts as the remote path when local capability, connectivity, or model availability is inadequate |
Know the current web limitations
The Firebase guide says on-device inference for web apps is supported on Chrome on Desktop and notes Chrome 139 or higher for its documented setup. Do not present that as support for every browser, mobile device, or embedded web view. Detect availability at runtime and give users a clear explanation when the app changes execution mode.
The documented on-device path supports single-turn text generation, including supported text and image input, plus structured output. The guide lists multi-turn chat, audio or video input, document input, function calling, and other capabilities as unavailable on-device. If your experience needs those features, design a cloud path rather than silently assuming the local model can provide them.
Make the fallback visible and safe
- Check browser and model availability before starting a local session.
- Tell the user whether the current request is staying on the device or being sent to a cloud service.
- Send only the minimum context needed for a cloud fallback.
- Keep response schemas consistent so the UI does not need separate rendering logic.
- Handle the case in which neither path is available.
A hybrid design is an execution strategy, not a substitute for product decisions. Measure latency, memory pressure, battery impact, answer quality, and failure rates on the devices your audience actually uses before making local inference the default.
Use WebXR only when spatial interaction is essential
WebXR is the specialized browser route for virtual-reality and mixed-reality experiences. Meta’s Horizon OS developer material provides a first-steps workflow and working samples, including a target-practice mini-game, a sneaker configurator, and a mixed-reality furniture interaction. The material describes a two-hour getting-started tutorial; that is the publisher’s tutorial estimate, not a promise that a production experience can be completed in two hours.

Choose WebXR when the user’s goal depends on looking around a scene, placing an object in a room, reaching for spatial controls, or using a headset as the primary display. Do not choose it merely because an AI model is involved. A conversational guide, planning assistant, or image annotator will usually be easier to reach and test as a 2D web app.
Keep AI and spatial rendering separate
Let the WebXR layer handle poses, controllers, scene objects, and frame timing. Let ordinary application code handle prompts, state, permissions, and model responses. If a model suggests an object placement or describes a scene, validate that suggestion against the allowed coordinate range and available assets before applying it.
The WebXR sources establish platform possibilities and sample experiences, not universal compatibility. Test the headsets, browsers, controllers, tracking conditions, and fallback view you intend to support. A 2D mode is valuable for onboarding, accessibility, and users whose device does not expose the required XR features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Design the AI boundary and response format
Natural-language output is easy to display but difficult to control. Prefer a response contract that states the fields your interface needs. For an interactive guide, that might be an answer string, a confidence explanation written for the user, a set of suggested next actions, and a flag indicating whether confirmation is required.

- Escape generated text before inserting it into HTML.
- Keep action names on an allowlist rather than executing arbitrary model-provided commands.
- Require explicit user confirmation for changes with external or irreversible effects.
- Log request identifiers and error categories without storing sensitive content unnecessarily.
Streaming can improve perceived responsiveness, but it adds partial-output states, cancellation behavior, and more complicated error recovery. Implement a complete non-streaming path first; add streaming only when the interaction benefits from seeing progressive output.
Common failure modes and fixes
The model response breaks the layout
Return structured fields and render them with fixed templates. Treat generated text as data, not as trusted markup. Add fixtures containing long, empty, multilingual, and adversarial responses to your UI tests.
Users submit the same action twice
Disable or replace the submit control while the request is in flight, attach an idempotency key to server-side operations, and make the retry behavior explicit. A loading spinner alone does not prevent duplicate side effects.
The local model is missing
Use feature detection, explain the reason for the fallback, and route only supported requests to on-device inference. The Firebase web documentation limits the documented path to desktop Chrome and a subset of capabilities; treat unsupported combinations as normal states rather than exceptional bugs.

The experience feels like a chat box pasted onto a website
Start from the user’s task, not from the model. Add filters, previews, progress indicators, comparison controls, undo, and clear next actions where they reduce effort. The model should make the task more capable, not replace every conventional control.
Latency makes the interaction confusing
Show what is happening, preserve the user’s input, allow cancellation where possible, and distinguish a slow request from a failed request. For expensive operations, let users review the proposed action before execution.
A worked example: an AI-powered interactive guide
Suppose you are building a guide that helps a visitor understand a technical subject. The visitor selects a difficulty level, asks a question, receives a structured explanation, and chooses a follow-up action.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Interface: a topic selector, question field, submit button, result card, and follow-up buttons.
- State: selected topic, difficulty, question, request status, answer, follow-up options, and an error message.
- Server request: send the question and selected settings to a server endpoint; do not expose a privileged model credential in the page.
- Response contract: return an answer, three follow-up options, and a boolean indicating whether the answer needs a source or clarification.
- Rendering: show the answer in a stable card, enable only the returned follow-up actions, and keep the original question visible for editing.
- Fallback: if the model is unavailable, offer a small set of deterministic topic explanations or let the visitor retry later.
This example works as a standalone page. To make it an MCP experience, expose the underlying operations as tools and add a component for the result card only if comparison or editing benefits from a visual surface. To make it hybrid, attempt local single-turn generation for supported requests and use cloud inference for multi-turn context or tool calls. To make it immersive, move only the presentation into WebXR if the guide genuinely benefits from spatial objects.
Make the platform decision with four questions
- Where must people find it? Choose a standalone web app for a normal link, an Apps SDK app for a ChatGPT-hosted workflow, or an MCP server when multiple compatible hosts should use the same tools.
- Do users need visual manipulation? Add a component when they must inspect, compare, edit, confirm, or navigate structured information. Keep tools-only when text is sufficient.
- Does local execution solve a real constraint? Select hybrid inference when privacy, local context, or offline behavior matters and your target browsers satisfy the documented requirements. Otherwise, a server-backed path is simpler.
- Is spatial interaction the point? Use WebXR only when a headset or mixed-reality view materially improves the task. Provide a 2D fallback for everyone else.
Requirements, costs, and availability
The basic browser route requires HTML, CSS, JavaScript, a server-side runtime for protected operations, and access to whatever model or tool service you select. The cited material does not establish current hosting prices, model prices, universal device support, or a single best provider, so calculate those from the current documentation for your chosen stack.
The Apps SDK page describes the product as a preview, says submissions are being accepted, and says monetization details will be shared in the future. Treat access, review, and commercial terms as changeable. The Firebase guide’s local-inference limits and browser requirement are similarly subject to platform updates; verify them immediately before launch.
You do not need a particular programming book or a game-development course to begin. The MCP quickstart assumes familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and a Node SDK. If those basics are unfamiliar, learn enough JavaScript to handle events, asynchronous requests, objects, arrays, and DOM updates, then build a one-interaction prototype.

Pre-launch checklist
- The user action, AI contribution, visible UI change, and persisted state are written down.
- A static interface works with mock data before the real model is connected.
- Secrets and privileged operations stay behind a server you control.
- Validation, loading, empty, success, timeout, permission, and retry states are implemented.
- Model output is validated, escaped, and rendered through a controlled response schema.
- Tools remain useful without a widget if you are using MCP.
- ChatGPT-specific features have a detected fallback.
- On-device availability, Chrome desktop support, and the documented feature limits are checked at runtime if using hybrid inference.
- WebXR has a tested 2D fallback and device-specific compatibility checks.
- Data retention, user consent, logging, and access control match the sensitivity of the experience.
- You have verified current preview, submission, browser, and model requirements immediately before release.
The core principle is straightforward: build the interaction as a web application, keep deterministic behavior in your code, and call AI where it adds a capability the user can perceive. A game engine is one possible tool for a particular class of spatial product, not a prerequisite for an AI-powered interactive experience.
