How to Build an AI DeFi Trading Agent Without Giving It the Keys

You can use AI to analyze markets or prepare DeFi transactions without giving the model control of your wallet. The safer design keeps the model away from private keys, checks every proposed transaction against rules enforced outside the model, and requires a separate signer approval before funds move. Autonomous execution is a possible later stage—not a necessary goal—and it adds risk without proving that an agent can trade profitably.

What changes when an AI signal becomes a transaction?

A signal-only system produces analysis for a person to interpret. An agent that can call tools, construct transactions, or interact with a wallet has a different role: its output can become an action with financial consequences. Each added capability expands the ways a bad prediction, manipulated input, software defect, or compromised tool can cause harm.

That distinction matters more than whether a product calls itself an AI trading bot. Before enabling a feature, identify exactly what it can read, what it can propose, what it can submit, and what authority can approve or sign the result. A natural-language explanation is not evidence that the underlying transaction is safe.

Three operating modes

Mode Who proposes? Who signs? Main trade-off
Signal only AI produces analysis A human uses a separate workflow Least automation; a person still translates the signal into an action
Agent prepares, human approves Agent builds a transaction proposal A human reviews and signs with an external signer Faster preparation while retaining a distinct approval step
Bounded autonomous execution Agent proposes and submits within externally enforced rules A pre-authorized mechanism or bounded signer policy More automation, with greater demands on limits, monitoring, and recovery

Moving from one mode to the next is not an automatic progression. If the benefit of automation is modest, leaving a human approval step in place may be the better design.

Where should decision-making authority and wallet access sit?

Keep the language model and its tool chain outside the root of signing authority wherever possible. The model can interpret data and prepare a candidate action; a separate policy layer can reject actions that violate limits; and a distinct signer can require a person to inspect and approve a transaction. This separation limits what a compromised prompt or faulty model can do by itself.

  • Model: may summarize inputs and propose an action, but should not receive the private key.
  • Policy enforcement: checks whether the proposal is permitted under rules the model cannot edit or bypass.
  • Signer: authorizes the transaction only after the required review or policy checks.
  • Operator: sets limits, monitors activity, and can stop the system or revoke permissions.

A hardware wallet for crypto can be relevant as a separate signing device, because it may keep a key outside the agent and provide a distinct confirmation point. It does not make a bad strategy good or a malicious transaction harmless. Confirm that the signer supports the intended chain and transaction type, and examine what the device actually displays before relying on it. A signer-mediated workflow is a design pattern, not a guarantee that every device or integration supports every review step.

How to design the controls around an agent

The following is a risk-control design recommendation synthesized from documented applications and threats; it is not a tested implementation or a universally safe configuration. Validate each control against the specific chain, protocol, signer, and exposure involved.

1. Observe with traceable inputs

Collect only the market, account, and protocol data needed for the task. Record each input’s source and timestamp, and flag stale values or disagreement between sources. Keep enough context to reconstruct what the agent saw when it proposed an action.

2. Analyze without granting authority

Ask the model for a candidate action in a structured form rather than treating free-form prose as an instruction. A proposal can include the intended protocol, chain, asset, action, amount, rationale, and the preconditions that must be true before proceeding. Preserve the input set and model output for later review. Do not let the model change the rules that govern whether its proposal is allowed.

3. Constrain outside the model

Enforce policy in a separate service, contract, or signer mechanism that the model cannot rewrite. Depending on the strategy, controls to validate may include:

  • Allowlisted chains, protocols, contract addresses, and action types.
  • Maximum transaction size, exposure, and transaction frequency.
  • Slippage bounds, daily loss limits, and limits on outstanding approvals.
  • A kill switch and a way to revoke permissions without asking the agent to cooperate.

These are engineering controls to test, not thresholds established as safe by the cited technical and policy sources. Choose values based on the exposure and protocol, then test whether the controls actually reject prohibited actions.

4. Simulate and validate the payload

Before signing or submitting, inspect the actual transaction: chain, destination, method or action, token approvals, amounts, fees, and expected effects. Check protocol-specific constraints and independently verify that relevant oracle data is sufficiently fresh. A natural-language summary from the agent is not a substitute for reviewing the transaction payload.

5. Sign separately

Do not place a private key in prompts, agent memory, logs, environment variables, or tool responses. Require an external signer or a separately controlled signing policy. For a human-approved setup, the person should review the signer’s transaction details—not merely accept the model’s explanation.

Ledger’s developer documentation describes signer-mediated agent workflows, including Agent Intent, which its documentation labels beta, and recommends a dedicated low-value account during beta. Its tools are described as early in development and may change. This is a vendor’s description of its own workflow, not independent assurance or a recommendation; verify current feature status, chain support, and what is displayed for the exact transaction type before relying on it.

6. Monitor, reconcile, and stop

Log proposed, rejected, signed, and completed actions. Reconcile actual outcomes against expected effects, alert on deviations, and make sure an operator can halt the agent and revoke its permissions. Exercise those recovery steps before relying on the system with material funds. No universal set of thresholds or recovery procedure is established across protocols.

What should a first implementation look like?

Start with the least authority that answers the operational need. A staged rollout can reveal integration errors before an agent is able to move assets, but passing one stage does not demonstrate trading performance or guarantee safety.

  1. Signal-only test: give the system read access to the data it needs. Compare its proposals with a human’s independent analysis; do not connect a signing path.
  2. Preparation test: let it construct a transaction proposal in a review environment or as an unsigned transaction. Check the payload and policy decisions independently.
  3. Human-approved operation: route proposals to an external signer. Require review of the chain, destination, approvals, amounts, fees, and expected effects before signing.
  4. Bounded execution, only if justified: use pre-authorized permissions limited by rules outside the model. Set exposure and rate limits, monitor continuously, and verify that shutdown and revocation work.

Do not treat a simulated transaction or a successful small transaction as proof that a later transaction is safe. Inputs, protocol state, contracts, and market conditions can change.

Which risks remain even with external signing?

Prompt and context injection

A March 20, 2025 preprint, AI Agents in Cryptoland: Practical Attacks and No Silver Bullet, describes attacks against an agent framework that manipulate prompts or historical context. In the reported setup, this can lead to unintended asset transfers or protocol violations. That is a finding about a particular framework and attack setup—not a measured exploit rate for all agents. External signing can create a review point, but a rushed or unclear approval process may weaken its value.

Oracle and contract failures

Ethereum.org’s smart-contract security guidance explains that contracts act on the information supplied to them: incorrect oracle data can therefore lead to incorrect execution. It warns that decentralized-exchange spot prices can be manipulated, including through flash-loan-enabled price distortion. Decentralized oracle networks and time-weighted average prices (TWAPs) are among the mitigations discussed, but a mitigation reduces a particular risk; it does not establish that every oracle design is safe.

Market and system-level risk

The Bank for International Settlements’ 2022 analysis, DeFi risks and the decentralisation illusion, discusses risks associated with DeFi structures, including high leverage, liquidity mismatches, interconnectedness, and concentration of power in governance. This is a system-level analysis, not a current risk measurement for any particular protocol. Agent controls cannot eliminate those underlying exposures.

Model and strategy uncertainty

Research describing crypto AI agents can document use cases without showing that they make money or are more reliable than human workflows. Lennart Ante’s 2025 working paper uses qualitative analysis to develop a typology of applications and identifies 306 major crypto AI agents; that count is not the number of profitable, successful, or deployed trading agents. Do not infer returns, win rates, or safety from the presence of AI or from an agent’s ability to execute transactions.

How should you evaluate an agent-and-signer setup?

Compare implementations on their actual control boundaries, rather than on marketing claims about autonomy or intelligence. Ask:

  • Can the agent access a private key, or can it only submit a proposal to a separate signer?
  • Can the signer display the chain, destination, approvals, amounts, and other details needed to review the transaction?
  • Are supported chains and transaction types documented for the exact workflow?
  • Can permissions be limited by protocol, contract, action, amount, or duration?
  • Are exposure, slippage, rate, and loss rules enforced outside the model?
  • Can an operator inspect logs, stop activity, and revoke permissions quickly?
  • Have rejection, shutdown, and recovery paths been tested rather than merely described?

A product or device that cannot show the details you need to verify a transaction should not be treated as a meaningful approval control for that workflow.

What do AI risk guidance and regulation establish?

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance for incorporating trustworthiness considerations into AI design, development, use, and evaluation. It can help teams organize intended-use documentation, risk measurement, monitoring, and responsibility assignment; it is not a crypto-agent certification or a legal requirement. The NIST page noted that the framework was being revised when consulted, so check NIST for the current version before adopting it.

The SEC Division of Trading and Markets’ May 15, 2025 crypto-asset FAQ says its answers represent staff views, not Commission rules or regulations, and have no legal force or effect. It does not settle whether a particular operator, asset, or activity is subject to a specific law. Legal analysis depends on the jurisdiction and facts; do not assume that autonomous DeFi trading is categorically permitted or exempt.
