Create a YouTube live event, put its stream URL and key into the encoder, start the playlist output, verify the preview in Live Control Room, and select Go live. Before you start, confirm live access and rights for every video and audio track.
Before you build the rotation
Confirm YouTube Live access
If the channel has never streamed live, YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Set it up in advance rather than assuming the channel will be ready immediately before launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup help.

Check rights for every file
Make sure you have the right to use both the video and its audio in a live stream. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may cause a placeholder or warning, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination; a strike can also terminate a stream. If you have licensed third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says licensed content can still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Prepare the media folder and rotation
Keep the folder limited to the videos you intend to play, give files clear names, and arrange the desired sequence in a playback source that supports playlists. These are practical organization choices, not YouTube requirements. Confirm that the computer running the encoder can access the files continuously; moving, renaming, or disconnecting them can break playback.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Decide how you will update the rotation. For a simple recurring loop, put the intended clips in the playlist order you want and make sure the playback source is configured to repeat. Check the beginning and end of the playlist, including whether the last file hands back to the first as expected. Test the playlist locally before sending it live.
Choose how to keep the feed running
Local encoder on a computer
YouTube lists OBS as free, open-source streaming software. A local setup gives you direct control over the files and playback, but the computer, storage, power, network connection, and encoder all need to remain available for the stream to continue. Use a playlist-capable playback source and configure the encoder to send its output to YouTube. YouTube’s help page does not document specific OBS playlist-source controls or current menu labels, so consult the current OBS documentation for the precise setup in your version.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Cloud service
YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7 without a dedicated PC. A hosted service shifts continuous playback off your computer. Before choosing one, check its current playlist and file-management functions, recovery process, uptime terms, availability in your region, and price; YouTube does not provide an independent reliability comparison or current pricing for these services.

Create the YouTube live event and connect the encoder
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream. The exact labels may change, so follow the current controls shown in Live Control Room and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots or public instructions.
- Set up the playlist output. Select the prepared media playlist as the encoder’s source, set it to repeat, and confirm the encoder is configured to send the resulting audio and video to the YouTube event.
- Start the encoder. Begin sending the playlist output. Wait for YouTube to receive it and show the preview in Live Control Room.
- Start the public event. Check the preview and the encoder output, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Verify the stream after launch and check playback again after the playlist has completed one full cycle.
Understand continuous broadcasts and archives
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream carrying the audio and video. Its guide describes keeping a 24/7 feed live while binding a separate broadcast to the same stream. This is useful context for more advanced API-based workflows, but it is distinct from simply looping a playlist in an encoder. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams (last updated September 14, 2026) and YouTube’s 24/7 streaming guide.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that statement guarantees an archive for a continuous session lasting 12 hours or longer. If keeping a recording matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow rather than relying on an unstated outcome.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The channel cannot start a live stream: If this is the first time live streaming is enabled, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available, as YouTube advises.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder signal: Check that the encoder uses the stream URL and key for the intended event, that the key has not been mistyped or replaced, and that the encoder is sending output. If you exposed the key publicly, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
- The preview appears, but the event is not live: Receiving the encoder feed and starting the broadcast are separate actions. After checking the preview, select Go live in Live Control Room.
- A clip fails or the playlist stops: Confirm that the media file is still available at its configured location and that the playback source can read it. Check the playlist order and repeat setting, then test a full cycle before restarting the live event.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the affected content and resolve the rights issue. If the material is licensed, contact the owner about Content ID allowlisting; a license by itself does not ensure uninterrupted live playback.
- A long session has no assumed archive: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours. For longer sessions, use a separate recording plan if a saved copy is required.
