What a Wildlife Reserve does in Planet Zoo 2
Frontier presents Wildlife Reserves as conservation locations beyond your conventional zoos. You construct a field base, support research and observation, and work toward returning suitable animals to the wild. The feature description frames the activity as constructing and designing a base of operations with observation towers and equipment for conservation work.
Research is the link between zoo management and the reserve. Frontier says that studying a species can teach you what it needs in the wild, unlock improved welfare options and create the chance to release animals into a Wildlife Reserve. In other words, placing scenery alone is not the reserve loop: animal knowledge, habitat quality and ongoing research all matter.

The Planet Hub is the stated management point for this network of locations. Frontier describes it as the place to establish and visit locations while handling shared research, trading and storage within the current game mode. The exact Planet Hub labels can vary by build or platform, so use the live interface rather than following an assumed click path.
What is confirmed and what you must verify in-game
| Question | What the available official material establishes | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | A Wildlife Reserve is a conservation location outside the normal zoo setting, with a base of operations and observation equipment. | Whether every reserve has the same objective list or progression stages. |
| Management | The Planet Hub can establish and visit locations and manage research, trading and storage across locations in the current mode. | Exact menu names, button sequence and whether the path differs by mode. |
| Animals | Research may make animals eligible for release to a Wildlife Reserve. | The launch roster, eligibility filters, release costs, transport steps and confirmation dialog. |
| Welfare | Food, water, space, suitable terrain and plants, social conditions and enrichment are core animal requirements. | Reserve-specific thresholds, score formulas and any hidden bonuses. |
| Equipment | Observation towers and equipment are part of the reserve concept; a creator preview identifies research watch towers and acoustic monitors. | Operational radii, staffing rules, power needs, maintenance and unlock levels. |
| Availability | Frontier announced a PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 release date of October 13, 2026. | The announcement alone does not verify a particular retailer listing, edition or platform-specific availability. |
This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If the game shows a requirement or control that is not described above, trust the current in-game tooltip and help text; do not assume a preview or older interface still matches your build.
Plan the reserve before placing anything
Choose a conservation purpose
Pick a focal species or conservation goal first. A reserve designed around one large herbivore will need a different terrain mix, water route and social arrangement from one intended for a small, highly social species. The purpose also gives you a test for every later decision: if an object does not improve welfare, research access, observation or navigation, it is optional decoration.

Select a biome and a readable site
Use a biome that can support the chosen species without forcing the entire landscape to look artificial. Leave room for a contiguous habitat, a water source, service access and a research compound. A reserve reads more convincingly when the transition from untouched habitat to operational base is gradual rather than a grid of disconnected platforms.
Reserve space for growth
Do not fill the starting area with rocks and foliage immediately. Keep an expansion edge for additional habitat, a second observation point or a later species. Because reserve size limits and unlock pacing are not documented in the available sources, a flexible plan is safer than designing against an assumed maximum.
Step-by-step: build the reserve
1. Establish the location through the Planet Hub
- Open the Planet Hub from the current game mode.
- Choose the option that creates or establishes a new location, then select the Wildlife Reserve activity if the interface presents multiple location types.
- Name or identify the reserve in a way that reflects its purpose and biome.
- Enter the location and inspect the available build, research and storage panels before placing habitat items.
Those labels are intentionally described rather than quoted as a fixed walkthrough: the official material confirms the Planet Hub’s role, not a universal sequence of buttons. If the reserve option is unavailable, check the mode’s objectives, research state and on-screen requirements instead of assuming a missing asset is a bug.

2. Block out habitat, water and barriers
Lay out the animal zone before the operations base. Shape broad terrain first, then add water and natural barriers that keep animals contained without making the area feel like a boxed exhibit. Use the foliage and rock tools identified in the creator preview to create cover, elevation changes and visual variety.

Keep a clear route between food and water areas so animals are not forced through a single congested point. Leave secluded pockets away from paths and towers; these spaces let the reserve feel wild and give animals a quieter retreat. Paths and sightlines are design decisions rather than confirmed scoring mechanics, so favor legibility and animal comfort over a rigid formula.
3. Build a base of operations
Place the operational compound where it can serve the reserve without dominating the view. Frontier’s feature description specifically calls out a base of operations, observation towers and equipment. Put the base near an access edge or a natural clearing, then route paths around—not through—the largest uninterrupted habitat.
Keep storage and working space together if the interface allows it. A compact base is easier to expand and makes it obvious where research activity is concentrated. Do not infer staffing, power or maintenance requirements until the live game displays them.
4. Add observation and research equipment
Use observation towers to create long sightlines over the habitat, placing them on rises or at the edge of clearings rather than in every animal area. The creator preview also identifies research watch towers and acoustic monitors among the reserve tools. Treat acoustic monitors as part of a distributed research network: place them where terrain and vegetation create distinct listening zones, while avoiding a repetitive line of identical objects.

The available sources do not establish an equipment radius, coverage percentage, activation condition or staffing rule. If a tower or monitor shows a coverage overlay or status message, use that feedback to adjust placement. Otherwise, judge locations by practical visibility, access and the ability to observe animals without turning the reserve into a conventional viewing circuit.
5. Populate the habitat and satisfy welfare needs
Only introduce animals after the habitat is ready. Frontier’s welfare guidance lists six foundations:
- Reliable access to food.
- Reliable access to water.
- Enough space for the species and its group.
- Appropriate terrain and plants.
- Suitable social conditions.
- A fulfilling enrichment environment.
Check each requirement in the species information and welfare feedback available in your mode. A beautiful landscape that lacks water access or social space is not a finished reserve. Place enrichment where animals can use it without blocking travel routes, and distribute food and water so a dominant animal cannot monopolize a single point.

6. Start the research loop
Return to the Planet Hub and research tools after the first habitat pass. Frontier says research reveals what species need in the wild, can unlock improved welfare options and may enable release to a Wildlife Reserve. Keep the research cycle running while you refine terrain and observation infrastructure.

Use species information as a live checklist rather than a one-time setup screen. If a research result changes a habitat recommendation or welfare option, update the reserve before moving more animals. Shared research and storage are described as cross-location functions in the current mode, so inspect the Planet Hub when a resource appears to be unavailable locally.
7. Review the reserve in play
Let the reserve operate long enough to observe animal movement, welfare feedback and the usefulness of your sightlines. Walk the main paths, visit each tower and check whether the base remains accessible without cutting through sensitive habitat. Correct bottlenecks before adding decorative detail.
When the game exposes welfare or research feedback, treat it as authoritative. The official material confirms the welfare dimensions but does not define a reserve score target, so do not chase an assumed percentage or rank. A reserve is ready for the next stage when its animals’ needs are met, research is progressing and the infrastructure supports observation without undermining the habitat.

| Approach | Layout | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural immersion | Large uninterrupted habitat, concealed service routes, towers on the perimeter and sparse monitors. | Players who want the location to read as wilderness first. | Longer walks and fewer immediate viewing angles. |
| Research hub | Compact base with short routes to several watch towers and monitors, surrounded by smaller habitat zones. | Frequent research checks and easy equipment access. | More visible infrastructure and a less untouched appearance. |
| Balanced reserve | One central operations area, a broad primary habitat, and a secondary observation loop with secluded back areas. | General-purpose builds and future expansion. | Requires careful path planning to avoid crowding the habitat. |
These are design frameworks, not official reserve types or mechanically ranked strategies. Choose one according to how you want to play and then verify the game’s own feedback.
How to decide whether an animal is ready for release
Do not equate a completed-looking habitat with release eligibility. First confirm that the animal’s species research has reached whatever state the live game requires. Frontier describes a “Thriving” state as requiring research into a species’ needs in the wild, and says research can unlock the chance to release animals to a Wildlife Reserve.
Next, check welfare in the actual reserve. Food, water, space, terrain, plants, social conditions and enrichment should all be addressed for the individual and its group. Finally, look for the game’s explicit release or eligibility indicator. Because the available sources do not establish the roster, prerequisites, transport process or confirmation steps, follow the current in-game prompt rather than a fixed external checklist.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common build problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The reserve option is missing in the Planet Hub. | The current mode, progression or research state may not expose it yet. | Read the Planet Hub objective text and any mode-specific unlock message; exact prerequisites are not documented here. |
| Animals remain stressed despite attractive scenery. | A welfare category is failing even though the landscape looks complete. | Check food, water, space, terrain, plants, social conditions and enrichment individually. |
| Animals cluster around one area. | Resources or enrichment may be concentrated at a single point. | Distribute access points and confirm that paths, terrain and group size do not create a bottleneck. |
| Towers or acoustic monitors appear ineffective. | Placement, line of sight or an undisclosed operational rule may be involved. | Look for an in-game coverage or status indicator; no official radius or staffing rule is established. |
| You cannot find a release command. | The species may not be eligible, research may be incomplete, or the control may be located in a different panel. | Review species research, welfare feedback and Planet Hub prompts before moving or selling the animal. |
| The base overwhelms the habitat. | Structures were placed before the landscape and sightlines were planned. | Move the compound to an edge clearing, conceal service routes and reserve open areas for wildlife. |
What not to assume from previews or guides
- A creator preview is useful for identifying tools such as foliage, rocks, research watch towers and acoustic monitors, but it does not establish every launch control.
- A welfare panel is not proof of a reserve-specific score formula. No verified target, rank or percentage is provided in the available official material.
- The presence of a species in a zoo does not by itself prove that it can be released. Eligibility depends on the live game’s research and release systems.
- An announced October 13, 2026 platform date is a product statement, not confirmation that every edition or retailer listing is available in your region.
A practical first-session checklist
- Choose a focal species and read its current requirements.
- Establish the Wildlife Reserve through the Planet Hub if the mode makes it available.
- Block out habitat, water, natural barriers and secluded areas before decorating.
- Place the base of operations at the habitat edge.
- Add observation towers, research watch towers and acoustic monitors where they support useful sightlines.
- Provide food, water, space, terrain, plants, social conditions and enrichment.
- Run research and revisit species information as new options appear.
- Use live welfare and research feedback to correct the build.
- Look for the game’s explicit release-eligibility instruction before attempting a release.
