Build the responder as a backend that receives WhatsApp messages through a Meta-configured webhook, applies business and policy rules, calls an AI service when appropriate, and sends a reply through the WhatsApp Business Cloud API. The API is Meta-hosted; your application still owns the conversation logic, consent handling, human handoff, and operational safeguards.

How the WhatsApp AI auto-responder works

The message path has four parts: the customer and business number, Meta’s Cloud API, your backend, and the AI or human support system your backend chooses to use. Meta’s API documentation identifies a Meta business portfolio, a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA), and a business phone number as setup prerequisites.

  1. A customer sends a message to the business’s WhatsApp number.
  2. Meta delivers an inbound event to the webhook endpoint you configure.
  3. Your backend parses the event, loads relevant conversation state, and applies business rules. It can answer with AI, use a fixed response, or route the case to a person.
  4. Your backend sends the permitted reply through the Cloud API and records the result for support and operations.

Sending and receiving are separate parts of the integration: an outbound API call does not, by itself, receive customer messages. Meta’s archived Node.js quickstart makes that distinction and describes webhooks as the inbound event path; treat it as conceptual background, not current implementation instructions.

What you need before building

  • A Meta business portfolio, WABA, and business phone number.
  • An application and credentials configured through the current Meta App Dashboard and live Cloud API documentation.
  • A publicly reachable backend endpoint for inbound webhook events.
  • An AI service and business-approved knowledge or response rules, if the bot will generate answers.
  • A clear route to human support and a process for recording customer opt-ins and opt-outs.

The archived tutorial uses historical setup examples. Do not copy an old Graph API version, token example, or setup sequence from it as current guidance. Confirm the current API version, required credentials and permissions, and the present webhook configuration in Meta’s live developer documentation before implementation.

How to connect a WhatsApp webhook to an AI chatbot

1. Configure the inbound event path

Set up the webhook in Meta’s current developer tools and point it at your backend. The endpoint must be reachable from Meta, but the available documentation here does not establish the current verification procedure, signature requirements, retry behavior, event subscriptions, or delivery timing. Follow the live Meta technical documentation for those specifics rather than relying on archived sample code.

2. Separate message handling from AI behavior

Keep the webhook receiver, conversation-state handling, business rules, AI request, and outbound sender as distinct responsibilities where practical. The receiver should hand an event to application logic; the AI should not decide on its own whether an outbound message is permitted or whether a person must take over. Store enough conversation state to know when the customer last messaged and whether the conversation is waiting for human support.

3. Decide whether AI should answer

Use business rules to choose between an AI answer, a fixed response, or escalation. A practical design can route questions outside the bot’s approved knowledge, requests involving sensitive or consequential decisions, and low-confidence answers to a person. Those routing criteria are design choices, not a Meta-prescribed model or framework; tailor them to the service you provide.

4. Send the selected response through Cloud API

Once the application has chosen a response and checked that it is allowed, send it through the Cloud API using the current endpoint and credentials documented by Meta. Keep the provider’s send result and the conversation outcome available to your support workflow. Verify current status-event handling and other delivery details against Meta’s live documentation; they are not specified by the archived tutorial as current requirements.

Enforce WhatsApp’s messaging rules in the application

Use the 24-hour service window as a send-time gate

WhatsApp Business Policy permits a reply without a Message Template during the 24-hour customer service window, which opens and resets with each user message. Outside that window, a business may send only approved Message Templates. Represent the most recent customer message time in conversation state and check the window immediately before sending, rather than assuming an AI-generated answer is always sendable.

When the window has expired, do not send an arbitrary free-form AI reply. Use an approved template where appropriate, or wait for the customer to message again. Template approval and designated use are controlled by WhatsApp.

Obtain permission and honor opt-outs

WhatsApp’s policy requires businesses to have the recipient’s number or username and opt-in permission for subsequent messages or calls, and to honor opt-out requests. Build consent and suppression handling into the application and support process. The business is also responsible for required notices, permissions, consents, and data security under the laws and jurisdictions where it operates.

Make escalation prompt and clear

WhatsApp allows automation during the 24-hour window but requires prompt, clear, and direct escalation paths. Offer a usable way to reach a person, such as an in-chat transfer, phone, email, web support, support form, or in-store visit. The bot should state how to use the available route when it cannot appropriately resolve the request; simply saying that a human may be available is not an escalation path.

Test the complete flow before production

Test the system as a conversation, not only as an AI prompt or an outbound API call. Include these cases:

  • A normal inbound message reaches the webhook and receives the intended response.
  • Duplicate or delayed events do not create confusing repeated replies or corrupt conversation state.
  • The AI is uncertain, cannot answer from approved information, or encounters a request that should go to a person.
  • A customer opts out and the system suppresses subsequent messages as required.
  • A message received within the service window can receive a non-template reply, while a message sent after the window is limited to an approved template.
  • The application records outbound send outcomes and handles the current platform’s delivery-status behavior.

These are engineering checks, not a claim that any implementation has been tested. Confirm webhook security, retries, idempotency, rate limits, endpoint requirements, and delivery-status processing in current Meta technical documentation before launch.

Costs, versions, and alternatives

Verify changing details directly with Meta

API versions and pricing can change, and pricing may depend on country and message type. The available policy material points to Meta’s pricing policy but does not establish a current rate table, so no country-specific estimate can be stated here. Check Meta’s live pricing information and current API-version documentation at deployment time.

Consider Meta Business Agent only if it is available to you

Meta Business Agent is a possible alternative for some businesses, but Meta describes its availability as limited to selected businesses, countries, and languages. Check eligibility and compare it with a custom Cloud API backend on webhook and business-logic needs, human handoff, control over service-window and template rules, maintenance ownership, and verified operating costs. It is not a universal replacement for a custom integration.
