Build an image carousel in three layers: meaningful slide content in HTML, responsive presentation in CSS, and keyboard-operable controls in JavaScript. Keep automatic rotation optional; if you include it, provide a clear pause control. A carousel should make content easier to browse—not hide images people would be better served seeing in a static gallery.
Decide whether a carousel is right for the page
A carousel is a collection of items that displays one or more at a time; it is also commonly called a slideshow or slider. Before writing code, decide whether readers benefit from seeing one image at a time. W3C notes that carousel content can be difficult to discover, so a visible image grid or static gallery may be more useful when visitors need to compare several pictures at once. If the carousel is appropriate, define what each slide contributes. Decide whether images are informative or decorative, whether captions or links belong with them, and whether the page needs only previous/next navigation or direct selection of a particular slide. These choices affect both the markup and the controls.
Build the slide content with semantic HTML
Use a labeled section for a carousel that has a heading, and represent its slides as a list. A list keeps the content understandable if styling or script is unavailable. Associate the section with its visible heading using aria-labelledby, and give each slide a label such as “1 of 3.” The WAI guidance describes this region-and-list approach in its carousel structure guidance.

For informative images, write alternative text that communicates the relevant information rather than repeating nearby captions. If an image adds no information beyond its surrounding text, use an empty alt value so assistive technology can skip it.

</section>The example starts with one visible slide and marks the others hidden, so the initial state does not depend on JavaScript to conceal them. If script fails entirely, however, visitors will see only the first slide. If no-script access to every image is important, choose a static list or add a deliberate no-script fallback rather than assuming the interactive version will work for everyone.
Make the layout responsive and controls easy to see
Let images shrink to the available width while preserving their proportions. Use object-fit: cover only when a consistent crop makes sense for the subject; it can cut off important content in portraits, product shots, maps, or diagrams. Keep captions legible and controls distinguishable against both bright and dark image areas.

}The 44 × 44 CSS-pixel minimum for non-inline buttons and links is a W3C WAI styling recommendation; it is about control targets, not image dimensions. Leave whitespace around controls and check contrast over the real images, not just a mock background. The WAI styling guidance covers these considerations. The optional animation above is brief and only applies when the visitor has not requested reduced motion; omitting it is also a sound choice.

Add previous and next behavior with JavaScript
Use native button elements for navigation. They already respond to keyboard activation and expose button semantics; custom clickable spans or arrows without accessible names require extra work. On each change, hide the prior slide, show the new one, update the polite status message, and leave keyboard focus on the button the visitor activated. WAI’s functionality guidance demonstrates button navigation and announcements.

});This example wraps from the last slide to the first and from the first to the last. The live region announces the new position; aria-live="polite" requests a non-interruptive announcement. Do not move focus when a slide changes. If a slide contains links or other controls, hiding the old slide with the native hidden attribute also removes its contents from normal interaction and the accessibility tree.
When direct slide selection is needed
For a short or navigationally important set, add one button per slide. Give each button an accessible name that identifies its destination, such as “Show slide 2: Forest trail,” and visibly mark the selected button. Keep its state in sync with the current slide—for example, with aria-current="true" on the selected button—and ensure keyboard focus remains predictable. Avoid adding dots merely for decoration: they should be real, named controls if they look interactive. WAI’s ARIA Authoring Practices carousel pattern explains slide labels, visibility, and rotation controls.
Keep automatic rotation optional and controllable
Manual next/previous navigation is often enough. If slides rotate automatically, provide an obvious pause/stop control and let visitors control the motion. WAI warns that moving content can distract or make text difficult to read; the APG pattern also includes a rotation control. Do not make automatic movement the only way to discover later slides, and do not move keyboard focus as the slides rotate.

A practical implementation should stop rotating when a visitor pauses it and avoid restarting unexpectedly. Consider stopping rotation when keyboard focus enters the carousel or a pointer hovers over it, and make the control’s label or state clear about what will happen next. If implementing a timer, clear it when paused and clean it up when the carousel is removed. The manual example above deliberately has no timer, so it needs no rotation control.
Test the finished carousel
- Tab through the page and use Enter or Space on each navigation button; confirm focus is visible and never jumps unexpectedly.
- Use the carousel without a mouse, including any direct-selection controls or pause control.
- With a screen reader, confirm the carousel has a useful name, slide content has sensible labels, and a slide change is announced without excessive chatter.
- Check small and large viewports, captions, image crops, and control contrast on both light and dark images.
- If rotation exists, test pausing, resuming, and keyboard focus entering the carousel. Check the reduced-motion preference as well.
W3C states: “All functionality, including navigating between carousel items, must be operable by keyboard.” That is a useful minimum test, not a guarantee that the design is easy to discover or use.

Buttons do nothing
Check that the script runs after the carousel markup exists and that the selectors match the HTML. If the script is loaded in the document head, defer it or wait until the DOM is ready. Open the browser console for selector or syntax errors, and verify the buttons are not covered by another element.
Every slide appears at once
Confirm that non-current slides receive hidden and that the CSS does not override the browser’s hidden-element behavior. Avoid a broad rule such as li { display: block !important; } that forces hidden list items to render.

The image is stretched or important content is cropped
Use proportional sizing such as width: 100%; height: auto for natural-ratio images. If a fixed-height frame is necessary, preview the crop at each viewport and adjust the focal point; do not assume one crop fits every image.
Screen readers do not announce the change
Verify that the status element is present before the change and that its text actually updates. Keep the live message concise, such as “Slide 2 of 3.” Avoid putting the entire slide into a live region, which can cause long or repetitive announcements.
Keyboard focus disappears or lands inside a hidden slide
Do not replace the focused navigation button when updating the carousel. If a change can hide the currently focused element inside a slide, move focus only when the user’s action requires it and to a predictable destination; routine previous/next activation should normally leave focus on its button.
Controls are hard to locate on top of an image
Place controls in a contrasting panel or give them a solid background and visible focus outline. Keep space around them and check the WAI target-size guidance rather than relying on a small icon alone.

Check the carousel in a real browser
Markup and unit checks cannot show whether an image crop, caption, or control remains understandable on the rendered page. A developer can open the page in a browser and inspect it at the target viewport, test keyboard focus and button behavior, and check the result with assistive technology.

Should an image carousel rotate automatically?
No. Manual previous and next controls are sufficient for many pages. If you add rotation, include a clear pause or stop control and let visitors control the motion.
Can I use a carousel without JavaScript?
The slide list remains semantic HTML, but the example’s initial hidden attributes leave only its first slide visible if JavaScript never runs. Use a static gallery or provide a deliberate no-script fallback when access to all images without script is required.
How large should carousel buttons be?
W3C WAI recommends at least 44 × 44 CSS pixels for non-inline buttons and links in its styling guidance. This recommendation concerns interactive targets, not image size.
