How to Build a Travel Business Website With WordPress (2026 Guide)

The practical way to build a travel business website with WordPress is to decide what the site must accomplish, choose hosted or self-hosted WordPress, select a theme that fits your content and booking process, build the essential pages, and test the complete customer journey before launch. WordPress.com is the simpler hosted route; self-hosted WordPress offers more control but makes you responsible for hosting, updates and backups.

1. Define what the website must do

Start with the business outcome, not a theme or plugin. A travel website may need to:

  • Generate consultation or trip-planning inquiries.
  • Present itineraries, destinations and departure information.
  • Accept tour or activity reservations.
  • Sell packages online.
  • Send customers to an external booking provider.

Write one primary call to action, such as “Request an itinerary,” “Check availability” or “Book this tour.” Secondary actions can include joining an email list, calling the office or viewing a destination guide. This decision determines the pages, forms, integrations and testing your site needs.

2. Choose hosted or self-hosted WordPress

Option What you get What you manage Best fit
WordPress.com hosted Hosting is provided, with platform-level security and backups described by WordPress.com. Content, design, plan settings and any enabled extensions. Owners who want less server administration.
Self-hosted WordPress Your own WordPress installation and greater control over hosting and configuration. Choosing a host, updates, backups, HTTPS, security configuration and recovery. Businesses needing technical flexibility or custom integrations.

Neither route is universally better. Hosted WordPress reduces infrastructure work. Self-hosting can provide more control, but that control comes with operational responsibility. Confirm plan limits, support scope, backup retention and the ability to export your content before committing.

3. Check hosting requirements before buying

For self-hosted WordPress, WordPress.org currently recommends:

  • PHP 8.3 or greater.
  • MariaDB 10.11 or greater, or MySQL 8.0 or greater.
  • HTTPS support.
  • Apache or Nginx as the recommended web server options.

These requirements are time-sensitive. Ask a prospective host for the exact PHP and database versions on your plan, whether HTTPS certificates are included, and how upgrades are handled. WordPress warns that older PHP and database releases have reached end of life and may expose sites to vulnerabilities. Check the current WordPress requirements page again when you purchase and whenever you renew hosting.

4. Prepare the site structure before designing

List the information customers need to decide whether to contact or book you. A small operator may need these pages:

Home

State the destinations or travel style you specialize in, identify the ideal customer, show a primary call to action and link to your strongest trips or services.

Trips, tours or services

Create a page for each meaningful offer. Include destinations, duration, inclusions and exclusions, starting price or “request a quote” language, availability information, preparation requirements and the next step.

About and trust

Explain who operates the business, where it is based, relevant experience, licenses or memberships that genuinely apply, and how customers can get help. Use verifiable details rather than generic claims.

Contact or inquiry

Provide a form with only the fields needed to qualify a request, plus an email address, phone number or office hours if those channels are monitored. Tell visitors what happens after they submit.

Policies and legal information

Publish privacy, cancellation, payment, accessibility and booking terms that match your actual operation and jurisdiction. Obtain professional advice where travel regulations or consumer-protection rules require it.

The Learn WordPress site-building course teaches planning, choosing a theme, creating core pages, adding credibility and calls to action, and deciding whether to extend the site with plugins. Adapt its page count to your business rather than copying a fixed template.

5. Install WordPress and set the fundamentals

  1. Connect your domain. Register a domain that is easy to say and type, then point its DNS records to WordPress.com or your self-hosted provider according to that provider’s instructions.
  2. Enable HTTPS. Confirm that the site loads at its secure address and that WordPress Address and Site Address use the HTTPS version.
  3. Set the site identity. In the dashboard, open Settings and configure the site title, tagline, language, timezone and reading settings.
  4. Choose readable URLs. Under Settings → Permalinks, select a structure that produces descriptive page addresses. Review existing links before changing a live site.
  5. Configure email delivery. Test contact-form notifications from a real customer address and confirm that replies go to a monitored mailbox.
  6. Create an administrator recovery plan. Use unique credentials, keep a second trusted administrator where appropriate, and document how the business can regain access.

6. Select a theme for the real customer journey

A theme controls the site’s presentation and many of its layout elements. Travel-oriented directory listings can provide trip, destination and trip-type layouts. The WordPress.org listings for Travel Booking and Travel Agency advertise booking-related features; the retrieved listings showed Travel Booking version 1.4.1 updated April 7, 2026, and Travel Agency version 1.5.7 updated March 31, 2026.

Those listings are starting points, not proof that a theme is suitable for every operator. Before activating one, check:

  • Whether the current version supports your WordPress and PHP versions.
  • Mobile layouts for itineraries, galleries, forms and checkout screens.
  • Documentation, support terms and update history.
  • Accessibility and translation options relevant to your audience.
  • Whether the demo uses the same booking, payment and content structure you need.
  • How easily you can change themes without losing trip data.

A theme can style a booking interface without supplying the operational system behind it. Do not assume that a “booking” label includes payment processing, supplier or channel-manager APIs, live inventory, deposits, cancellation rules, tax handling or customer support workflows.

7. Decide how reservations will work

Native WordPress booking

A booking plugin or theme-based workflow can keep the customer journey on your domain. Verify availability calendars, time zones, capacity rules, payment gateways, confirmation emails, refunds, coupons, taxes, staff access and data exports. Test an actual reservation from mobile and desktop, including failed payment and cancellation paths.

External booking provider

Linking to an established booking service can reduce the amount of payment and inventory logic you maintain. Make the hand-off obvious, preserve consistent branding where possible, and test that the destination page opens correctly on mobile. Confirm which system owns customer data and which business is responsible for support, refunds and policy disclosures.

Inquiry-first workflow

For custom itineraries, a form and human follow-up may be more appropriate than an instant checkout. Ask for dates, party size, destination interests, accessibility needs and budget only when those details help you respond. Set a realistic response expectation and ensure every submission reaches the right person.

8. Add only plugins that solve a defined problem

Install a plugin because the business needs a specific capability, such as forms, bookings, multilingual content, analytics, caching or backups. For each candidate, check its update date, compatibility, support quality, data handling and whether it duplicates an existing feature.

Keep a short inventory of active plugins and record what each one does. Remove unused extensions rather than leaving abandoned code active. Before updates, take a usable backup and know how to restore it.

9. Build pages that help travelers decide

  • Use clear destination and trip names in headings.
  • Show the itinerary in a scannable order, with dates or duration where known.
  • Separate included items from exclusions.
  • Explain fitness, age, equipment, visa or seasonal requirements that actually apply.
  • Use authentic, properly licensed images with useful alternative text.
  • Place the primary call to action near the decision point, not only in the footer.
  • Display contact and policy information before a customer submits payment or personal data.

Do not publish availability, prices or promises that staff cannot keep. If rates vary, explain what determines the quote and when it expires.

10. Test before launch

  1. Open every important page on a phone, tablet and desktop.
  2. Submit each form and verify delivery, confirmation messages and reply addresses.
  3. Follow every booking link, including a failed or unavailable option.
  4. Check navigation, logo links, search, breadcrumbs and calls to action.
  5. Test HTTPS, redirects, image loading and obvious 404 errors.
  6. Review titles, headings, metadata, spelling, currency, dates and destination names.
  7. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to complete the main task and note where they hesitate.

11. Launch and maintain the site

Launching is the start of an operating routine. WordPress states that only its latest version is officially supported, while security fixes and responsible-disclosure processes address vulnerabilities. Keep WordPress, themes, plugins, PHP and the database on supported releases.

  • Schedule updates during a period when someone can check the site afterward.
  • Maintain backups stored separately from the live installation and periodically test restoration.
  • Renew the domain and hosting before expiry.
  • Review forms, booking links, payment connections and policy pages regularly.
  • Monitor uptime, suspicious login activity and unexpected content changes.
  • Retire plugins and themes that are no longer maintained or needed.

Recheck WordPress requirements and theme listings because versions, features and commercial terms change. A maintenance owner—whether an employee, agency or hosting service—should be named before launch.

12. A practical decision checklist

  • Choose hosted WordPress when minimizing server administration matters more than deep infrastructure control.
  • Choose self-hosted WordPress when you can manage hosting, security, backups and updates or have reliable technical help.
  • Choose a travel theme when its layouts match your content and its current compatibility and support are acceptable.
  • Use a separate booking tool when reservations involve inventory, suppliers, payments or cancellation rules that a theme does not clearly document.
  • Start with inquiries when each itinerary is customized and a person must qualify the request.
