How to Build a Strong Pokémon Team for Pokémon Red

A strong Pokémon Red team is not six individually powerful Pokémon. It is a six-member party you can obtain in Red, train at roughly similar levels, and use to answer different matchups without exhausting its battle moves on required HMs. Start with type coverage, check Red-specific availability, and let every member participate. Bulbasaur can make the first Gym easier for a new player, but no starter or fixed roster is the universally best choice for the entire game.

What “strong” means in the original Pokémon Red

Pokémon Red allows a party of six. Professor Oak’s instruction manual puts the central idea plainly: “You may want to collect 6 different types of Pokemon.” In practice, that means building a group whose members solve different problems rather than stacking six Pokémon that all attack the same way.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Coverage: Your party should have useful answers to several opposing types, including dual-type Pokémon.
  • Availability: A theoretically excellent Pokémon does not help if it appears only after the part of the story where you need it, is exclusive to Blue, or requires a trade you cannot make.
  • Level balance: Raise the whole party instead of allowing one overleveled carry to do every battle.
  • Progression utility: At least some members must accommodate field moves taught by HMs, even when those moves are not ideal for a battle-only moveset.
  • Generation I rules: Red does not use the same battle mechanics as later Pokémon games. In particular, the original games group physical and special attacks by type rather than assigning the category separately to each move.

“Best team” therefore depends on your starter, which encounters you find, whether you can trade, how much backtracking you tolerate, and whether you want a convenient story run or a deliberately optimized challenge. The framework below is designed for an ordinary solo story playthrough.

Set your Red-specific constraints before catching anything

Confirm that each choice exists in Red

Red and Blue do not share identical wild encounters or encounter probabilities. A team list copied from the other version can quietly include a Pokémon you cannot catch. Before committing to a slot, check a Red-specific Pokédex for its location, encounter timing, evolution method, and whether trading is required. The instruction manual itself explains that trading is needed to complete the full collection; a complete National Pokédex is a different goal from a practical story party.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If you are playing on original hardware, also account for your actual trading options. A trade evolution is not merely a training decision if you have no second compatible game and link setup. Choose a non-trade alternative for that slot rather than planning around an evolution you cannot obtain.

Use the order of the adventure

Team value changes as the map opens. An early encounter that helps against the first few Gyms may be worth using even if another option would have a higher theoretical ceiling much later. Conversely, a late arrival can leave you spending the final stretch catching up in levels. Record when a candidate becomes obtainable, how much experience it needs before it contributes, and whether its useful moves arrive before the endgame.

Reserve all six slots deliberately

You do not need to fill every slot immediately, but decide what each slot is meant to contribute. Leaving several places for “something good later” often produces a party with overlapping weaknesses and uneven levels. A planned empty slot is fine; an accidental duplicate role is not.

Choose a starter for the opening, not for the whole game

Why Bulbasaur is beginner-friendly

The Red/Blue instruction manual specifically recommends Bulbasaur for a first-time player because the first Gym is built around Rock-type Pokémon and Grass attacks are effective against Rock. That is a clear early-game advantage: it reduces the amount of grinding and makes the first major matchup easier to understand.

That recommendation is about the opening, not proof that Bulbasaur is mandatory or that it dominates every later battle. Treat it as a low-friction starting point. If you choose it, do not fill the rest of the party with more Pokémon that duplicate its common matchups or share the same weaknesses.

If you choose another starter

A different starter can still support a strong story team. Plan to add an answer to the first Gym rather than assuming the starter will cover every early problem. Your replacement may be a Pokémon with an advantageous type, a useful status move, or simply enough reliable damage after a little extra training. The important decision is the matchup you need to solve, not a claim that one starter is objectively superior.

Build the six slots by role

Use this blueprint while checking actual Red availability. The “type target” is a job for the slot, not a demand for a particular species.

Party slot Primary job What to check before committing HM and training concern
Early anchor Provides dependable damage from the first routes through the early Gyms Can be obtained before the first or second Gym and has usable moves during that period Do not let this member become so overleveled that the other five stop gaining experience
Type-advantage attacker Answers a matchup your starter handles poorly Its type complements, rather than repeats, the starter’s main coverage Check whether it needs a late evolution or a trade to reach its useful form
Water or travel-capable slot Handles opponents vulnerable to its attacks and can carry a required travel HM when appropriate Available before the routes where water travel becomes necessary A field move may occupy one of four moveslots for much of the story
Fast finisher Acts before slower opponents and closes battles without relying on a single powerful carry Its Speed and learnable moves are useful at the level you can realistically reach Keep its battle moves functional after assigning any required HM
Defensive or status utility Switches into an unfavorable matchup, inflicts a condition, or buys time to heal Has enough durability or reliable status options to matter before the final areas Do not sacrifice all offensive coverage for utility; it still needs a way to contribute damage
Flexible sixth slot Repairs the party’s largest remaining weakness Choose after reviewing the first five members’ overlapping weaknesses Prefer a Pokémon you can train now rather than a perfect late-game idea you will barely use

This structure prevents a common mistake: choosing six favorites first and discovering afterward that four of them lose to the same opposing type. Re-evaluate the sixth slot whenever a new capture creates a duplicate role.

Think in matchups, including dual types

The manual teaches type advantages and warns that some Pokémon have two types. Use both facts when evaluating a candidate. A dual-type Pokémon can give you valuable offensive coverage, but it can also introduce an additional weakness or make a supposedly favorable matchup less straightforward.

Map the opponents you actually expect

Make a short list of the types used by upcoming Gym Leaders, rival battles, major villain encounters, and the Elite Four. Then mark which party member can attack each type effectively and which members are safe switch-ins. You are not trying to give every Pokémon an answer to every type; you are trying to avoid a matchup where your only answer is fainted, underleveled, or forced to use a low-accuracy move.

Measure overlap, not just variety

Six different primary types can still produce a fragile team if several members share the same weakness. Compare the complete typing of each candidate, not only the first type shown on a summary screen. If two members perform the same job and lose to the same attacks, keep the one that arrives earlier, trains more easily, or uses fewer valuable moveslots.

Do not import modern assumptions

Later generations changed move categories and added mechanics that are absent from Red. A move’s type determines whether it is treated as physical or special in this generation, so a move that is categorized differently in a modern game may perform differently here. Generation-specific strategy references such as Smogon’s Red/Blue hub are useful when you need to check an interaction; do not apply a current-generation moveset guide without verifying its mechanics against the original games.

Plan moves around the story and HMs

Separate battle moves from progression moves

HMs teach moves that work in the field as well as in battle. They enable progression such as cutting obstacles or traveling over water, so a practical story moveset may look less elegant than a battle-only set. Decide in advance which party members can carry required field moves without destroying the team’s coverage.

A Pokémon that knows a field HM is not automatically a wasted slot. It can still be your best answer to a particular type. The mistake is assigning several HMs to one member and then discovering that it has too little room for reliable attacks or status support.

Review moves whenever the party changes

  1. When you catch a candidate, inspect its current moves and the moves it can learn before the next major battle.
  2. Mark which moves are needed only for travel and which will remain useful in battle.
  3. Compare the candidate’s coverage with the four moves already planned for each existing member.
  4. Before a Gym or major route, replace a clearly redundant move rather than carrying two attacks that solve the same matchup.
  5. Keep at least one dependable attack on every active battler so a field move does not leave it unable to finish ordinary encounters.

Because exact move availability differs by species and level, verify every proposed moveset in a Red-specific Pokédex or move reference. A modern list can show a move learned by a later remake, through a later-generation tutor, or under a different physical/special rule.

Train all six without turning the run into a grind

Use a level-band target

The manual advises raising the party evenly and letting each member participate. Set a practical level band rather than chasing identical experience points. If one Pokémon is several levels ahead, place it in the back of the party and give the lower members the next safe battles. When a member falls behind, use routes where it can contribute instead of repeatedly sending it into a matchup it cannot win.

Rotate for real battles

Do not interpret “even training” as forcing every member into every encounter. Switch to the Pokémon that has the favorable type or the safest defensive position, then rotate the others through battles they can handle. This teaches you which matchups each member is actually for and reduces dependence on one carry.

Use healing as part of the plan

A team that has six healthy members is stronger than a team with one dominant member and five fainted backups. Heal before a major battle, carry the available recovery items you are willing to spend, and switch out when a matchup is poor instead of trying to win with a red health bar. The ability to respond after your preferred lead is weakened is one of the main benefits of a balanced party.

Check evolution timing and trade requirements

Evolution can improve a member’s statistics or movepool, but the timing matters. A candidate that evolves only very late may be weaker during most of the story, while a trade evolution may be impossible on your setup. Compare the unevolved form’s usefulness at the levels you will actually play, not only its final form’s reputation.

A practical six-slot plan you can fill with Red encounters

The following is a roster-building exercise rather than a fixed species list. Fill each line with a Pokémon confirmed to be obtainable in your copy of Red.

  1. Choose the opening anchor. If you want the easiest first Gym, select Bulbasaur as the manual recommends. Otherwise, write down the specific early matchup your chosen starter does not cover.
  2. Add an early complementary capture. Select a Pokémon available before the next Gym that attacks a different type or supplies a useful defensive switch. Avoid choosing solely because its final evolution is popular.
  3. Add a travel-capable member before water routes matter. Confirm that it can be caught and trained in time, then decide whether assigning the relevant HM leaves it with enough battle utility.
  4. Add a speed-oriented attacker. Look for a member that can act before common opponents at realistic story levels. Its purpose is to reduce damage taken and finish weakened foes.
  5. Add utility or durability. Choose a member that can absorb an otherwise dangerous attack, inflict a status condition, or provide a safe switch when your lead has a bad matchup.
  6. Fill the final slot only after reviewing weaknesses. Write down the types that currently threaten two or more members, then select an obtainable answer. If the best answer requires a trade or arrives near the ending, choose a usable Red-native alternative instead.

At each step, record the encounter location, earliest practical level, evolution requirement, useful pre-endgame moves, and HM burden. This creates a team that works during the journey rather than only on paper at the Pokémon League.

Compare two sound approaches before you commit

There is no single correct way to assemble a story party. These two approaches use the same principles but produce different experiences.

Decision axis Starter-centered approach Coverage-first approach
When members become useful Builds around the starter’s early strengths, then adds counters to its weak matchups Chooses each new member for the next uncovered matchup, even if training is less convenient
Type overlap Accepts some overlap when the starter is reliable, then corrects the largest shared weakness Minimizes repeated roles from the beginning
Training effort Usually smoother early because one member is already dependable May require more switching and rotation while several new members catch up
Moves before the endgame Prioritizes moves that support the starter’s plan and covers its bad matchups Spreads coverage across the whole party and may need more move management
HM pressure Often assigns field moves to whichever partner best complements the starter Chooses the HM carrier after comparing all six members’ battle roles

Use the first approach when you want a forgiving, low-planning run. Use the second when team construction itself is part of the fun. Both remain valid if every member is obtainable in Red and receives enough training to contribute.

Common team-building failures and fixes

One Pokémon is doing everything

Symptom: One member is far above the rest, and battles collapse when it is knocked out or faces a poor matchup.

Fix: Stop leading with it for ordinary encounters. Give the next safe battles to the lowest-level members, and keep the strong member available as a switch rather than the automatic first move.

The party has six members but only two useful roles

Symptom: Several Pokémon share a type, attack style, or weakness, while an important opposing type has no reliable answer.

Fix: List each member’s main job and the opponent types it handles. Replace the most redundant slot with an obtainable Pokémon that repairs the largest gap, even if its final evolution is less famous.

A recommended Pokémon cannot be obtained

Symptom: The species is a Blue encounter, appears only after the point where you need it, or requires a trade.

  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Fix: Return to the Red-specific location and evolution checks. Substitute a member available before the next major battle; a slightly less celebrated Pokémon that can actually be trained is the stronger story choice.

HMs have consumed the movesets

Symptom: Several party members carry field moves and lack dependable battle options.

Fix: Consolidate required HMs where possible, assign them to members whose other moves overlap least, and reassess the party whenever a new field route opens. Keep the story requirement separate from the moves you rely on to win important battles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A modern guide gives the wrong result

Symptom: A move or matchup behaves differently from a later-generation guide’s explanation.

Fix: Check a Red/Blue-specific mechanics and move reference. Remember that the original games use type-based physical and special categories and lack many systems introduced later.

How to validate a team before the final areas

  • Every member is obtainable in Red without a trade you cannot perform.
  • No more than two members are carrying essentially the same battle role.
  • Each major opposing type has at least one realistic answer, with a second option when possible.
  • The lowest-level member can survive and contribute in the next route rather than being carried exclusively.
  • Required HMs are assigned without removing every reliable attack from one Pokémon.
  • Your planned moves and interactions are documented for Generation I, not copied from a remake.
  • You have a recovery plan when the preferred counter is fainted, statused, or forced to heal.

If the checklist exposes a gap, fix it before the Pokémon League. Replacing a redundant member while you still have ordinary routes for training is much easier than trying to raise a new capture at the very end.

Where a printed guide can help

A Red/Blue strategy guide is optional, not a prerequisite. A 1998 Prima guide is documented as covering Pokémon locations, statistics, moves, TM and HM locations, Gym Leader tips, and maps. If you seek a physical copy, confirm the edition and current condition; the guide’s existence does not establish present-day availability or cartridge authenticity. A current Red-specific Pokédex remains the more important check for encounter and evolution details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical verdict

Build around six complementary roles, not six reputation-driven picks. Confirm Red availability and timing, use type matchups to decide what each slot contributes, train the party evenly, and reserve enough movespace for both battles and required HMs. Bulbasaur is the instruction manual’s beginner-friendly answer to the first Gym, but your strongest complete team is the one whose members you can obtain, train, and switch into the problems your own playthrough presents.
