The strongest first run in Seolhwa Dungeon is built for consistency, not maximum damage. Choose a species-and-class pairing whose basic attacks and defensive options you understand, select spell cards that remain useful when the next draw is unknown, read every god taboo before accepting a favor, and treat folklore encounters as tactical choices with costs. A death returns you to floor one and redraws the dungeon, so the first objective is to survive long enough to learn enemy habits, encounter prices, and which decisions your build can safely support.
What makes a first run different
Seolhwa Dungeon is a turn-based roguelike built around permanent consequences. The official Google Play listing, updated October 12, 2026, describes the rule plainly: “One turn decides everything. There is no undo, and death sends you back to the first floor.” Each attempt redraws the dungeon, so memorizing a route is less useful than learning how enemies, shrines and folklore events behave. Pocket Gamer’s October 17, 2026 coverage likewise presents the Korean folktales as the rules of the dungeon rather than decoration.

A run can last about 40 minutes to two hours, depending on how far you progress and how cautiously you play. That time is valuable, but it is not a reason to force a doomed push. A short attempt that teaches you a weakness, a taboo consequence or an encounter escalation can improve the next run more than a reckless attempt that reaches one extra room.
Recommended Free Tools
- Reliability beats a perfect combo. One unlucky turn can end a run, and there is no undo.
- Species and class must be judged together. The game advertises 14 species and 12 classes, but the published information does not establish a universal best pairing.
- Spell selection is uncertain by design. You choose from a pool of 32 spells as cards are drawn, so a build that needs one exact card is fragile.
- Every favor has a condition. Gods grant power with taboos, and breaking a taboo brings wrath.
- Folklore encounters can change the tactical situation. Rewards may cost health, position, time or future danger.
Choose a species and class as one package
Do not start by searching for a single “best” species or class. No cited source provides a definitive ranking, and the large roster is intended to support different approaches. Instead, compare pairings by what they can do repeatedly when your card draw is poor and an encounter goes wrong.

The five questions to answer before you confirm
- How does this pairing deal dependable damage? Identify the action you expect to use most often. If it requires a rare spell, a long setup or a resource you cannot replenish reliably, it is not a dependable first-run plan.
- How does it handle distance and groups? You need an answer when an enemy cannot be safely fought at close range or when several threats occupy the same area. That answer may be reach, area control, movement or simply a way to disengage.
- What is the defensive or escape tool? Look for a way to reduce incoming danger, reposition, block a pursuit or end a bad engagement. A modest defensive action you can use often is more valuable than a spectacular attack you can rarely afford.
- What does it consume? Note whether the pairing depends on a limited resource, a specific spell category or a particular sequence of turns. Resource pressure is especially dangerous when the dungeon redraws and you cannot plan every encounter in advance.
- How badly does it suffer from an unlucky spell draw? Imagine several levels in which your preferred card never appears. If the character still has a basic attack, a way to avoid damage and an answer to at least one awkward enemy, the pairing is suitable for learning.
A practical comparison sheet
| Axis | What to check | First-run preference |
|---|---|---|
| Reliability | Can the character act effectively without a particular card? | Repeatable actions with few conditions |
| Damage consistency | Does ordinary damage remain useful against several enemy types? | Steady output over a high-roll combo |
| Range | Can you influence a threat before it reaches you? | Some reach, movement or control |
| Defense or escape | What happens after a bad approach or unexpected enemy? | At least one dependable safety valve |
| Resource cost | How often can the key action be used? | Low or predictable cost |
| Taboo compatibility | Will the god’s rule make ordinary choices awkward? | A pairing that can follow the rule without crippling itself |
| Draw risk | How much power disappears when the next card is unsuitable? | Options that remain useful across many draws |
For a first attempt, favor the pairing whose plan you can explain in one sentence: “I use my reliable attack, keep distance or control when needed, and reserve my safety tool for a mistake.” You can explore specialized combinations after the codex and encounter rules are familiar.
Build around three answers, not a combo
Before entering, write down three jobs your build must perform: a reliable basic attack, a way to handle groups or distance, and a defensive, escape or control option. These jobs can be filled by the class, species, spells or a combination. The important point is redundancy: if one card is missing, another part of the character should still cover the job.
Reliable damage
Your ordinary attack is the foundation of a low-risk run. Use early levels to make that action effective against the common enemies you have already observed, rather than assuming a late-game combo will appear. If a choice improves damage only after several conditions are met, compare it with an option that works immediately and across more situations.

Distance and groups
Unknown rooms punish a character that can answer only one target standing directly in front of it. Keep at least one option that helps when enemies are spread out or arrive together. “Option” does not necessarily mean a large area attack; a movement card, a control effect or a ranged action can prevent a group from becoming a surrounding threat.
Defense, escape and recovery
Save one tool for the turn when your plan fails. A defensive or movement spell may appear less exciting than extra damage, but it preserves the run when an encounter, room layout or card draw is unfavorable. Do not spend the only escape option merely to end a routine fight one turn faster.

How to choose spells when cards are random
The official listing describes 32 spells in the card pool and says you only pick from what is drawn. Pocket Gamer also emphasizes the card-based selection. This means your spell plan must tolerate uncertainty. Build a collection of useful answers rather than waiting for a named sequence.
Use a flexible-card test
When a spell is presented, ask four questions:
- Can it help against more than one enemy type?
- Does it still have value when you are behind, not only when you are already winning?
- Does it protect health, position or future options as well as dealing damage?
- Would the run remain functional if the next two cards were unrelated?
Cards that pass several of these tests are safer early picks. A narrow effect can be correct when you have already identified a recurring threat, but it should not displace your only defensive or movement answer simply because its best-case damage is higher.

Use routine tools to clear ordinary rooms efficiently, then preserve emergency tools for an enemy you do not understand, a bad position or an encounter with a known escalation. This separation also helps you judge whether auto-fight is safe later: if the game can spend an emergency resource during an easy stretch, the next dangerous room may become unwinnable.
Do not build for an unconfirmed future draw
A combo that requires a specific spell, a particular order or a full resource bar can be a fun long-term project, but it is a poor foundation for the first run. Treat every future card as uncertain. If a later draw completes the combo, regard that as an advantage rather than a requirement.
Read god taboos before accepting favor
The game presents eight gods. Their favor comes with a rule, and violating that taboo brings wrath. The official listing says a shaman can perform a rite to make amends, but an amends route should be treated as recovery, not as permission to ignore the rule.

A pre-choice checklist
- Read the taboo attached to the god before selecting a dialogue, shrine or reward option.
- Translate the rule into ordinary play: which actions might you be asked to take, and which would be forbidden?
- Decide whether your species-and-class plan can still function while following it.
- Reject a tempting choice when its immediate reward could trigger wrath, cost health or force an encounter you cannot handle.
- If you break the rule, look for the shaman’s rite and treat the resulting burden as a priority rather than continuing to gamble.
Taboo compatibility belongs in your build comparison. A pairing that is slightly less damaging but can obey the current god naturally may produce a stronger first run than a high-damage pairing that repeatedly faces impossible choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFolklore encounters are tactical decisions
Do not assume a named folklore event is free loot. The official examples include bowing to or blocking a funeral procession, wrestling a dokkaebi and accepting a snail-maiden meal. Each presents a different kind of price: your position, health, time, future threat or willingness to accept an unknown consequence. Ask what the choice costs before asking what it rewards.
Funeral procession
When a procession asks you to bow or block it, evaluate the option against your immediate position and resources. A choice that leaves you exposed or delays your exit can be worse than a smaller reward. If your health or defensive cards are already low, prioritize the option that preserves a safe route rather than the one with the most attractive immediate benefit.
Dokkaebi wrestling
A wrestling choice is a direct test of your current combat condition. Check whether your reliable damage and defensive tool are available now, not whether the build would win after a future card draw. Enter only when you can survive an unfavorable turn and still leave with enough resources for the next room.
Snail-maiden meal
Accepting a meal is another reminder that rewards can carry delayed or hidden costs. Consider your current health, taboo, inventory or resource situation and whether you can afford to discover the consequence in the next room. Unknown does not mean automatically bad, but it does mean the choice should be made with a reserve.

The Imugi escalation
Pocket Gamer describes an Imugi that can become a dragon if a fight lasts too long, flooding the floor. This is a documented escalation pattern, not a reason to trade blows indefinitely. If the encounter begins to consume turns without making progress, change the plan: use your strongest reliable answer, reposition, control the threat or retreat if the game permits it. A prolonged fight can transform the encounter and endanger the entire floor.
More broadly, treat every unfamiliar folklore event as a branch in the run. Record what happened, what it cost and which warning sign preceded it. The codex turns that information into an advantage on later attempts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A floor-by-floor first-run procedure
Before entering the dungeon
- Choose the species-and-class pairing you understand best, not an alleged tier-list winner. No published source cited for this guide establishes a universal optimal pairing.
- Define your three answers: reliable damage, groups or distance, and defense, escape or control.
- Read the god taboo before serving that god. Reject the choice if the rule conflicts with your intended play.
- Decide what you will record after each unfamiliar encounter: enemy weakness, habit, cost, escalation and the safest response.
On the opening floors
- Spend early levels on flexible cards that work against several enemy types.
- Use ordinary fights to learn enemy habits while your health and defensive resources are high.
- Keep an exit plan before entering a room. Know which movement, control or defensive option you will reserve if the first approach is wrong.
- Record useful discoveries in the codex. The listing says it stores yokai stories, weaknesses and habits; those entries reduce uncertainty on the next attempt.
- Use auto-explore and auto-fight only through routine stretches where the outcome is already understood. Turn-by-turn decisions still determine survival.
At a shrine or folklore event
- Read every option and identify the likely price: health, position, taboo risk, time or a delayed threat.
- Compare that price with your current reserves, not with your maximum possible build.
- Decline or delay a risky choice when you lack a defensive answer for the next room.
- Against an enemy with a documented escalation, set a turn limit for your plan. If the fight is not progressing, change tactics rather than extending it.
When deciding whether to continue
Stop pushing when health, defensive resources or answers to the next threat are running low. In a game where death erases the run’s position and returns you to floor one, one greedy extra fight can be worth less than the information gained by surviving and recording what you learned.
Use automation without surrendering judgment
Seolhwa Dungeon includes auto-explore and auto-fight for routine stretches. These features are convenience tools, not replacements for planning. Turn them on only after you understand the enemies and room pattern in that stretch and have enough resources to absorb an unexpected result.
- Do not automate a room containing an unfamiliar folklore event.
- Do not automate when a god taboo could be violated by a choice.
- Do not automate a fight against an enemy whose escalation or weakness you have not recorded.
- Stop automation before a shrine, branch or high-cost encounter so you can read the options yourself.
A safe rule is to automate repetition, not uncertainty. If you cannot describe the likely next two turns, make the decisions manually.
Best Value
Turn failed runs into reconnaissance
After a death, change one major variable at a time. If you switch species, class, spell preference and encounter policy together, you will not know which change improved the result. Instead, keep most of the plan stable and alter one element:
- Try a different species or class while keeping the same conservative spell policy.
- Keep the pairing and change which flexible cards you prioritize.
- Keep the build and adopt a stricter rule for shrines and folklore choices.
- Keep the encounter policy and test whether a different god taboo fits the pairing better.
Write down the floor, enemy or choice that ended the run, the resource you lacked and the decision immediately before the failure. The codex’s records of yokai stories, weaknesses and habits are especially valuable here. A death that teaches one repeatable rule is progress, even though the character returns to floor one.
Plan for the game’s breadth
The published listing describes four main dungeons, seven branch dungeons, 150 yokai, eight gods, 14 species and 12 classes. That breadth makes a universal opening script unrealistic. Your first run should establish a decision framework that transfers between redraws and dungeon themes:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify what the current enemy does before spending your best resource.
- Check whether the room’s choice interacts with your god taboo.
- Prefer cards and actions that remain useful when the next draw is unknown.
- Record the weakness or habit that made the encounter safer.
- Leave a reserve for the next room instead of treating each victory as permission to spend everything.
As your codex grows, you can take more specialized pairings and accept more unusual encounters. Early consistency is what gives you the information needed to make those experiments intelligently.
What you need to play
Seolhwa Dungeon is a digital mobile title available through Google Play and the App Store. No physical product is needed for the first-run plan above. Pocket Gamer reports that the only purchase is a Folktale Collection that unlocks extra species and classes; the official listing also indicates ads and in-app purchases. You can therefore apply the consistency framework before buying anything, using the characters and options available to you and judging them by reliability rather than by a promised ranking.
A compact decision framework for every uncertain turn
When you are unsure, run the decision through this order:
- Survival: Can this choice kill me or remove my only escape?
- Taboo: Does it violate the god’s rule or create a wrath risk?
- Information: Will the choice reveal an enemy habit or encounter cost that helps future runs?
- Resources: What health, cards, position or time will remain afterward?
- Reward: Is the benefit large enough to justify the verified cost?
This order keeps the first run focused on its real objective: staying alive while converting uncertainty into knowledge. Strong damage helps, but a reliable action, a saved defensive card and a clear understanding of the next risk are what carry a run through a randomly redrawn dungeon.
