Sign in to Steam, open a game’s store page, add it to your wishlist, then use the current Wishlist and account notification controls to choose email alerts, mobile-app alerts, or both. Steam’s official notification page names Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal alerts, but it does not promise that every promotion in every region will trigger a message.
The controls and labels can change, so follow the settings currently displayed in your account rather than relying on a fixed button location. A large wishlist can also be organized with categories, searched, and configured for category-specific notifications when those options are available.

What a Steam wishlist notification actually does
A Steam wishlist is a saved list of games you may want to buy later. Adding a game does not purchase it, reserve a copy, or subscribe you to every type of marketing message. It gives Steam a way to track that title for your account and, subject to the notification settings shown for your account, alert you when relevant events occur.
Valve’s current Steam notification page says it will notify users by email or through the Steam mobile app when wishlist games are on sale as a Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, or Weekend Deal. Those named deal types are examples of the coverage Steam documents; they are not a guarantee that every discount, bundle, regional promotion, or publisher-specific offer will produce an alert.

Email is useful when you want a message that can wait in your inbox. A mobile alert is more immediate and easier to notice, but it can be distracting if many games are discounted at once. You can select one channel or both, and Steam also provides controls to stop email or mobile notifications later.
What you need before adding games
- A Steam account that is signed in on the website or Steam client.
- Access to the store page for each game you want to track.
- An account email address if you want email notifications.
- The Steam mobile app, with notifications allowed in the app and in your phone’s operating-system settings, if you want mobile alerts.
- A decision about whether you want broad wishlist alerts or only alerts for selected categories, if category-specific controls are shown in your account.
A computer, handheld, controller, or paid accessory is not required to create the list or receive alerts. These are Steam account features.
How to add a game to your Steam wishlist
1. Sign in and open the game’s store page
Sign in to Steam, then open the store page for the game you are considering. You can do this in a desktop browser, the Steam client, or a supported mobile view. The exact arrangement of controls can differ between those interfaces and can change over time.

2. Use the page’s wishlist control
On the game’s store page, use the wishlist control to add the title. Steam’s community explainer confirms that a game can be added directly from its game page. Because the available material does not establish a permanent screen location or button label, look for the current control associated with adding the game to your wishlist instead of following an old screenshot.
After you activate the control, verify that the page reflects the new wishlist status. If the status does not change, make sure you are signed in to the intended account and reload the page before trying again.
3. Repeat for the games you want to monitor
Add each title separately. A wishlist is account-specific, so adding a game while signed in to one Steam account will not place it on a different account’s list. You can return to a title’s store page later and remove it if your plans change.

How to turn on sale notifications
1. Open your wishlist and notification controls
Open the Wishlist view while signed in, then review the notification settings associated with your account. Steam’s labels and navigation can shift, so use the current Wishlist and account notification controls rather than expecting a particular sequence of menus.
2. Select email, mobile alerts, or both
Choose email if you prefer alerts that remain in your inbox for later review. Choose mobile notifications if you want a prompt through the Steam app, or enable both channels if you do not want to miss a sale. The official notification page confirms that these are the two built-in delivery channels it documents.
3. Check the scope of the alerts
Read the wording beside the controls before saving. The page specifically names Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal notifications. If your account exposes category-specific settings, decide whether the alert should apply to the whole wishlist or only to selected categories.
4. Save the setting and allow delivery on your devices
Use the save, apply, or equivalent control displayed by Steam. For mobile delivery, also check that the Steam app is signed in to the same account and that your phone has not blocked its notifications. For email delivery, check the account inbox and its spam or filtered folders if a message does not appear. Steam does not promise instantaneous delivery, so an alert should not be treated as a real-time price monitor.
Email or mobile notifications: which should you use?
| Channel | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reviewing sale messages when convenient and keeping a searchable record | Messages can be buried by other mail or delayed by inbox filtering | |
| Steam mobile app | Seeing a prompt quickly while away from a computer | More immediate interruptions and dependence on app and phone notification permissions |
| Both | People who want a backup channel | More messages and a greater chance of duplicate interruptions |
This is a practical choice, not a measured speed comparison. Steam’s published wording confirms the channels, but it does not provide a delivery-time guarantee.
Organize a large wishlist before it becomes noisy
Create categories with a purpose
Steam’s wishlist update describes custom categories. Use names that represent a buying decision, such as Buy on sale, Co-op, Short games, or For later. The exact category-management labels may vary, but the goal is to make each group meaningful enough that an alert from it helps you decide what to do.

Use category-specific notification settings when available
The same Steam update describes notification controls for individual categories. If those controls are present in your account, place high-priority games in a category that remains enabled and move speculative titles to a category with fewer or no alerts. This reduces noise without deleting games from your wishlist.
Search instead of scrolling
Steam’s wishlist update also describes improved wishlist search. Search is useful when the list contains many entries or when you want to check whether a game is already saved before adding it again. Search terms and filters shown in the current interface can change, so use the controls your account presents.
Watch for demo alerts
The wishlist update mentions demo alerts. If your wishlist settings include that option, decide whether demo announcements are useful to you or whether they would distract from sale messages. A demo alert is a different event from a discount alert; enabling one does not establish that every future sale will be announced.

Broad alerts versus category-focused alerts
| Approach | How to configure it | When it fits | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-wishlist alerts | Keep notifications enabled for the full wishlist | You have a short list or want to hear about every qualifying deal Steam documents | More messages as the list grows |
| Category-focused alerts | Use custom categories and enable notifications only for selected groups, if your account exposes that control | You have clear priorities, such as co-op games or a target purchase list | Requires occasional sorting and category maintenance |
| Minimal alerts | Keep the list for reference but disable email or mobile notifications | You prefer to check prices manually or are receiving too many messages | You may notice a sale later than people who keep alerts on |
Steam’s current notification page confirms that you can opt out of email or turn off mobile notifications. Use the settings currently displayed in your account; older instructions may describe labels or controls that have since changed.
Why a sale notification might not appear
The promotion may not match a documented alert type
Steam names Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal notifications on its current page. That wording does not establish that every discount in every country, currency, edition, bundle, launch promotion, or publisher event generates a message. A game can therefore be discounted without producing the alert you expected.
The game may not be on the account’s wishlist
Return to the game’s store page or open the Wishlist view and confirm that the title is present while you are signed in to the correct account. If you use more than one Steam account, verify the account identity before changing notification settings.

The selected channel may be disabled
Reopen the account notification controls and confirm that email or mobile delivery is still enabled. For mobile alerts, check both Steam’s in-app setting and the phone’s operating-system permission. For email, check spam, promotions, and other filtering rules before assuming Steam did not send anything.

If you use category-specific settings, inspect the category containing the game. A title placed in a category with notifications disabled will not be covered by that category’s alerts, even though it remains on the wishlist.
Delivery is not documented as instantaneous
Steam’s notification wording describes the channels and qualifying deal examples, not a guaranteed delivery time. Do not use wishlist alerts as a substitute for a real-time price tracker or a promise that a message will arrive at the moment a price changes.

Turn off mobile alerts
Use the mobile-notification control shown in your Steam account or app. If alerts continue, check the phone’s system-level permission and notification settings. Turning off mobile alerts does not necessarily remove games from your wishlist.
Opt out of email
Use the email preference control in the current Steam account settings. The official notification page explicitly says that email opt-out is available. Keep the wishlist itself if you still want a record of games to review manually.

What developers can see
A Steam Community announcement dated September 29, 2023, explains wishlist behavior for developers. It says developers see aggregate wishlist totals rather than a player’s email address or account name, and it includes the sentence that the developer will know nothing about players who added the game to the wishlist. That post is a community explainer associated with the Craftomation 101 Steam Community page, not a substitute for Steam’s current privacy policy or account settings.
The same announcement says a wishlisted game can lead to release-day and discount emails and developer news. Treat those statements as the explanation in that announcement, while using the current account controls to determine what you have enabled. Adding a title to a wishlist is not the same as publicly identifying yourself to its developer.
What older Steam documentation tells you—and what it does not
Valve’s March 15, 2016 email-notification update described broader discount coverage at that time, including Weeklong Deals and custom-configured discounts, along with more email preference options. It is useful historical context for why older guides may mention deal types or controls that are not visible today.

Useful wishlist routines
For a short list of must-buy games
- Add each game from its store page.
- Keep email or mobile notifications enabled for the whole wishlist.
- Check that the account and delivery channel are correct.
- When an alert arrives, open the store page and review the current price, edition, and regional terms before buying.
For a large backlog
- Add games without enabling every possible alert immediately.
- Create categories such as buy on sale, co-op, and for later.
- Use wishlist search to find and sort titles efficiently.
- Enable notifications only for priority categories if that option is available.
- Review the categories periodically and remove games that no longer interest you.
For someone who dislikes interruptions
- Keep the wishlist as a personal reference list.
- Choose email instead of mobile alerts, or opt out of both channels.
- Check the Wishlist view manually during a sale period that matters to you.
- Re-enable a channel temporarily if you decide you want Steam’s documented deal alerts again.
Limits to keep in mind
- Steam does not state that every promotion in every region generates a wishlist notification.
- The documented deal examples are Daily Deal, Midweek Deal, and Weekend Deal; coverage of other promotion types can change.
- Notification labels and navigation may differ between desktop, mobile, and account versions.
- No published guarantee says alerts arrive instantly.
- Category-specific controls and demo alerts are described in Steam’s wishlist update, but their exact current placement and labels should be confirmed in your account.
- A Steam gift card can fund a later purchase, but it is unrelated to creating the wishlist or receiving notifications.
The simplest setup
Add games from their store pages, open the Wishlist and account notification controls, choose email, mobile alerts, or both, then organize the list with categories if it grows. Keep your expectations aligned with Steam’s wording: alerts cover the deal types and settings Steam currently documents, not every possible price change. If messages become distracting, disable one channel or narrow alerts to priority categories without deleting the wishlist.
