A July 4, 2026 parts list totals $1,039.97 before tax and shipping, leaving $9.03 under a $1,049 ceiling. It pairs an AMD Ryzen 5 5600 with an 8GB RTX 5060 in a small-form-factor case. Treat that figure as a dated example, not a guaranteed checkout price: availability, compatibility, taxes and delivery charges must be checked before ordering.
This is a flexible DIY computer, not a physical replica of Valve’s compact Steam Machine. The two approaches differ in hardware design, size, software setup and support. The guide below shows how to evaluate the parts, assemble the system and decide whether SteamOS or another operating system fits your games.

No controlled, apples-to-apples measurements establish a winner for cooling, acoustics or power draw between these two designs.
The published parts list
The following prices are the figures published on July 4, 2026. They are a historical snapshot, not current October 2026 quotes. The operating-system line is valued at zero because SteamOS is available without a separate license fee.
| Component | Listed model | July 4, 2026 price |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 5600, 6 cores/12 threads | $150.00 |
| CPU cooler | SilverStone SST-KR03 | $19.99 |
| Memory | Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 | $109.99 |
| Graphics card | Gigabyte RTX 5060 8GB | $349.99 |
| Motherboard | ASRock A520M-ITX | $149.99 |
| Storage | KingSpec 512GB Gen 4.0 NVMe SSD | $88.99 |
| Case | SilverStone Technology SUGO 16 | $95.03 |
| Power supply | MSI MAG A650GL, 650W, fully modular ATX | $75.99 |
| Operating system | SteamOS | $0 |
| Reported total | $1,039.97 | |
The $1,039.97 total leaves only $9.03 of headroom. Tax, shipping, a missing cable, a replacement part or an optional controller can eliminate that margin. A controller is not included in the table and should be added separately if couch gaming is part of your plan.
Refresh the budget before you order
Rebuild the cart immediately before purchase rather than copying the historical total. Check each item from the same retailer or across retailers, then add sales tax and shipping. Confirm that the listed memory is a complete 16GB kit rather than a single module, and check whether the motherboard includes the accessories you need.

- Record the live price, stock status and estimated delivery for every component.
- Include tax, shipping, return postage and any required adapter in the total.
- Reserve money for a USB flash drive if you do not already have one for the operating-system installer.
- Decide whether a controller, Wi-Fi adapter or additional storage belongs in the initial budget.
- Keep a small contingency; a $1,049 ceiling with a $1,039.97 starting total has almost no tolerance for price movement.
Compatibility checks before buying
Processor and motherboard
The Ryzen 5 5600 is an AM4 processor and the A520M-ITX is an AM4-class motherboard, but confirm the exact board revision, socket and BIOS support on the manufacturer’s current documentation. A board can be electrically compatible yet require a BIOS revision before it will boot a particular CPU. Ask the seller whether the board ships with a suitable BIOS or choose a retailer with a straightforward return process.
Memory type and capacity
The proposed board uses DDR4, so do not substitute DDR5 modules from the Steam Machine specification. Verify the kit’s module count, rated speed, voltage and the board’s supported capacity. Install a matched kit in the recommended slots; an incorrectly seated module can produce a no-display symptom that looks like a graphics-card failure.
Cooler mounting and clearance
Confirm that the SST-KR03 includes the AM4 mounting hardware and that its height fits the SUGO 16 with the motherboard installed. Check for interference with the memory modules and the case side panel. Thermal compound, a backplate or a mounting bracket may be required depending on the cooler revision.

Graphics-card dimensions
Do not rely on the name RTX 5060 alone. Measure the exact Gigabyte card’s length, height and slot thickness, then compare those dimensions with the SUGO 16’s published limits. Check where the power connector sits: a side-facing connector can need additional bend clearance inside a compact case. Confirm that the card’s output ports suit your television or monitor.

Power supply, cabling and airflow
The listed supply is a 650W fully modular ATX model, but verify that the SUGO 16 accepts its dimensions and that the required PCIe and motherboard cables reach their sockets without sharp bends. Confirm the graphics card’s recommended power connector and the supply’s available connectors. Map the case’s intake and exhaust positions before assembly; a compact case can have adequate wattage but poor airflow if fans are installed in the wrong direction.
Storage and expansion
The 512GB NVMe drive fits the capacity target, but confirm the motherboard’s M.2 key, supported drive length and whether the slot shares lanes or ports with another connector. SteamOS and a modern game library can consume 512GB quickly, so decide whether a larger drive is more economical before closing the case.
How to assemble the compact PC
- Prepare the workspace. Use a clean, non-carpeted surface, a Phillips screwdriver and the motherboard manual. Keep every screw and standoff separate; compact cases often use several lengths.
- Inspect the motherboard. Check the socket cover, M.2 slot and memory latches for damage. Install the processor by matching the AM4 alignment marker; never force it into the socket.
- Install the NVMe drive. Insert the drive at the manufacturer’s angle, secure it with the correct screw and fit the heatsink if supplied. Remove any protective film from a thermal pad before replacing the heatsink.
- Fit the memory. Open the correct latches, align the notch and press evenly until the module clicks. If using two modules, follow the board manual’s recommended pair of slots.
- Mount the cooler. Apply the cooler manufacturer’s specified amount of thermal compound, attach the AM4 hardware and tighten screws gradually in a cross pattern. Plug the fan into the CPU_FAN header.
- Prepare the case. Install the correct standoffs, fit the rear I/O shield if it is separate and identify the front-panel, USB and audio cables before the motherboard blocks access.
- Install the motherboard. Lower it onto the standoffs without trapping cables underneath, then tighten only the specified screws. Connect the 24-pin motherboard cable and the CPU power cable.
- Install the power supply. Attach only the modular cables you need. Route the PCIe cable toward the graphics-card position and keep excess length away from fans.
- Install the graphics card. Remove the correct slot covers, seat the card until the retention latch engages and secure its bracket. Connect its dedicated power cable; do not use a loose or partially inserted plug.
- Connect the case wiring. Use the motherboard diagram for the power switch, reset switch, status LEDs, front USB and audio headers. Polarity matters for LEDs but not for the two power-switch pins.
- Check airflow and close the case. Ensure no cable touches a fan, every fan can spin freely and no panel presses against the cooler or graphics card. Recheck that all latches and power connectors are fully seated.
- Perform a test boot. Connect the display to the graphics card, attach a keyboard and power on. Enter firmware setup, confirm the CPU, 16GB of memory and NVMe drive are detected, and watch the initial temperature before installing the operating system.
Installing SteamOS on DIY hardware
Steam Support provides installation material referring to an image for Deck, Machine and PC. SteamOS itself is Arch Linux-based. That establishes a PC installation path, not a guarantee that every motherboard, wireless adapter, graphics card or game will work.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Download the current PC installation image from the official Steam Support instructions and read the hardware notes for the release you are using.
- Write the image to a USB drive with a trusted imaging utility. The process erases that drive, so copy off any files first.
- Enter the motherboard’s UEFI boot menu, select the USB device and follow the installer’s prompts. Use UEFI mode and select the intended NVMe drive carefully; choosing the wrong disk can erase existing data.
- After the first reboot, remove the USB drive, complete network and account setup, and allow SteamOS to install its updates.
- Open the display settings and select the television or monitor’s native mode only after confirming that games run acceptably. Valve’s support guidance says: “1080p is the system default game resolution on Steam Machine (labeled ‘Default’ in the Display dropdown menu) to ensure a good gameplay experience out of the box, and the resolution we use for Steam Machine Verified testing.”
- Install one or two games you actually play, test controllers and audio, and check each title’s compatibility before deleting another operating system or committing the machine to a living-room role.
If a component lacks a working driver, if a game’s anti-cheat system blocks Linux, or if a launcher does not behave correctly under Proton, SteamOS may not be the best sole operating system. Confirm the current support status for the exact hardware and games rather than assuming that a successful installation means universal compatibility.

What performance can you reasonably expect?
The RTX 5060 8GB is the build’s principal graphics component, while the Ryzen 5 5600 supplies six cores and 12 threads. The parts list contains no controlled benchmark results, so it cannot substantiate a particular frame rate, quality preset or resolution target. Performance will vary with the game, driver, Proton version, upscaling mode, ray-tracing settings and thermal conditions inside the case.
Valve’s product wording says “Up to 4k gaming with FSR 4.1.” The words “up to” and the FSR 4.1 qualification are material: they do not promise native 4K at a fixed frame rate in demanding games. The official support guidance identifies 1080p as the Steam Machine default and Verified-testing resolution. For a DIY system, begin at 1080p, tune each game individually and treat higher output resolutions as a title-by-title experiment.

No display after assembly
- Confirm the monitor cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard’s video output.
- Reseat the memory and test one module at a time in the slot specified by the manual.
- Recheck the 24-pin, CPU power and graphics-card power connectors.
- Clear the firmware settings according to the motherboard manual and verify CPU BIOS support.
System powers off during a game
- Check that the graphics-card cable is fully inserted and that the power supply is mounted with unobstructed airflow.
- Inspect fan direction, dust filters and cable clearance in the compact case.
- Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures, then retest with a conservative graphics preset.
SteamOS cannot connect or a controller is missing
- Install all system updates, reboot and test the adapter with another device.
- Use a wired connection during initial setup if wireless support is uncertain.
- Pair the controller through the system’s Bluetooth settings, then verify that the game recognizes its input layout.
A game will not launch
- Check the title’s current SteamOS or Proton compatibility and its anti-cheat requirements.
- Try the recommended Proton version, disable unsupported overlays and verify the game files.
- If the publisher requires a Windows-only launcher or anti-cheat path, retain a Windows installation or use another supported machine.
Upgrade and maintenance choices
The 512GB drive is the first likely capacity constraint for a large library. Replacing it with a larger compatible NVMe drive is cleaner than filling the system with external storage, but check the board’s M.2 limits and back up saved games first.

Memory upgrades depend on the motherboard’s slot count and maximum capacity. Preserve matched modules where possible. A CPU or graphics-card upgrade must be checked against BIOS support, cooler clearance, case dimensions, connector requirements and the 650W supply’s capacity; a faster part is not automatically a safe drop-in replacement.
Clean dust from filters and fans periodically, keep firmware and SteamOS updated, and recheck temperatures after changing fan curves or installing a new graphics card. Compact systems have less room for routing mistakes, so maintenance is part of the ownership cost.
Who should choose this build?
- Choose the DIY route if you want standard replaceable parts, are comfortable validating fit and firmware, and accept that SteamOS setup and game support require troubleshooting.
- Choose the appliance route if a very small, integrated living-room product and a managed software experience matter more than selecting every component yourself.
- Reconsider the $1,049 ceiling if tax, shipping, a controller, larger storage or a Windows license is essential. The historical parts total leaves only $9.03 of margin.
The dated list proves that a Steam Machine-style PC can fit just below $1,049 before extras. It does not prove current availability, identical performance, equal acoustics or guaranteed SteamOS compatibility. Refresh the cart, complete the dimension and firmware checks, and test your own games at 1080p before treating the build as a finished living-room system.
