Build the rover around the competition you will actually enter, not around a shopping list. Start by converting the current rulebook into measurable requirements, then design a serviceable drive base, safe power system, control and communications link, and only afterward add the sensors or manipulator that earn mission points. The staged approach below works for a small university team while leaving room for event-specific rules on mass, budget, radio equipment, endurance, and operator intervention.

Choose the competition before choosing the rover

“University robotics competition” is not one specification. Each event and season can set different limits for mass, cost, dimensions, radio spectrum, autonomy, safety inspections, field conditions, and what a team may buy. Treat examples from other events as reference points, not universal requirements. Download the rulebook, clarifications and schedule for your target season before ordering motors, batteries or radios.

What the current examples show

Event example Published constraint How to use it
URC 2026 The 2026 Q&A identifies 70 kg and $24,000 as strict limits for the fielded configuration; the budget includes the base station. Use these figures only when entering URC 2026, and verify the final accounting interpretation in the current documents.
CIRC 2027 The rover should weigh less than 50 kg, be transportable by two team members without a wheeled cart, and operate for at least one hour from onboard power. These are CIRC 2027 requirements, not a general definition of a small rover.
IRoC-U 2026 The official rulebook index lists preliminaries, qualification, elimination and final-field stages; the page was last updated July 11, 2026. Plan for qualification gates and changing field requirements when competing in this event.

Read the URC 2026 Q&A, the CIRC 2027 rules, and the IRoC-U 2026 rulebook index alongside your selected event’s latest clarifications. A rule that is correct for one season can be wrong for the next.

Turn the rulebook into a requirements sheet

Before drawing the chassis, create one shared document. Give every requirement an owner, a verification method and a citation to the exact rule section. Mark each item as a hard limit, a scoring opportunity, an operating preference or an open question.

For URC 2026, the requirements page describes the challenge as a project of The Mars Society and provides the season’s governing material at URC 2026 Requirements & Guidelines. Keep a frozen copy of the rules used for each design review, then record later clarifications separately so the team can prove which version it followed.

Define a complete rover architecture

Write a one-page block diagram before selecting products. Draw power, data and mechanical interfaces between the blocks, and assign a person to own every interface. A small rover is a system, not a chassis with electronics bolted on.

Core subsystems

  • Chassis and suspension: supports the loaded rover, protects electronics and provides attachment points for the payload.
  • Drive: motors, gearing, wheels or tracks, encoders, motor controllers and a defined stopping method.
  • Power: battery, main isolation, fuses, protection, distribution, regulators, connectors and a documented ground scheme.
  • Compute and control: onboard computer or microcontroller, motor-control interface, sensor buses, software watchdog and operator station.
  • Sensing: only the sensors needed for localization, obstacle detection, manipulation or task measurement.
  • Communications: command, telemetry and video paths, antennas and a recovery behavior for link loss.
  • Mission payload: manipulator, sample system, tool or other device that performs the scored action.

Interfaces should be explicit: voltage and current range, connector type, message rate, mounting datum, allowable mass and service access. This prevents a late payload from blocking a battery door or a radio antenna from being hidden by a metal panel.

Respect student-build requirements

The CIRC 2027 design rule says, “Rovers must be substantially designed, built, and programmed by team members.” Its rules allow purchased motor controllers but do not allow simply entering with an entire purchased robotic arm. Read the exact wording at CIRC 2027 Rules and Guidelines and ask the organizer about borderline assemblies before committing money. Similar design-and-build obligations may be phrased differently elsewhere.

Design the chassis and drivetrain around the mission

Start with a loaded, not empty, mass model

List the chassis, suspension, motors, controllers, battery, wiring, computer, radios, sensors, tools, protective covers and every payload. Include fasteners and spares that travel on the rover. Calculate the center of gravity with the payload installed; a stable empty chassis can tip when an arm reaches forward.

Choose wheelbase, track width and ground clearance from the actual obstacles and slopes in the field. Provide guarded low points for recovery and lifting, and keep a flat, accessible area for electronics. Design panels so a failed controller or loose connector can be reached without removing the payload.

Estimate torque and speed before buying motors

Use a conservative loaded mass, wheel radius, desired speed, slope and rolling resistance. A first-pass wheel-force estimate is F = m g (sin(theta) + Crr cos(theta)) + m a; divide the force among driven wheels and multiply by wheel radius to obtain approximate wheel torque. Apply a margin for starts, uneven traction and payload motion, then select a gear ratio that keeps the motor inside its efficient and thermally safe range.

Verify stall current, controller limits, encoder resolution, braking behavior and connector ratings together. A motor that meets a catalog torque number can still overheat if the rover spends a mission pushing against an obstacle. The evidence available for these competitions does not identify a universally correct motor or torque rating. A sensible search category is geared DC motors with encoders; select a specific part only after checking its electrical and mechanical data against your calculations and the event’s purchasing rules.

Wheels, tracks and steering are trade-offs

Choice Advantages Costs and risks Questions to answer
Four or six independently driven wheels Simple control, efficient rolling and straightforward wheel replacement Can lose contact on diagonal obstacles; exposed wheels need protection Can the suspension keep enough wheels loaded on the prescribed terrain?
Articulated or rocker-style suspension Maintains ground contact over uneven terrain More joints, wiring flex and maintenance Can joints survive the payload and be serviced between runs?
Tracks Large contact area and potentially good flotation on soft ground Higher rolling losses, debris management and more difficult field repairs Does the event reward flotation enough to justify the added complexity?
Skid steering Few steering parts and tight turns Scrubs tires, increases current on high-grip surfaces and complicates precise positioning Will the floor and battery tolerate repeated pivot turns?

No wheel arrangement is best across competitions. Score each candidate against terrain capability, stability with the payload, mass, transport, endurance, repair time and the precision required by the task.

Engineer power, protection and endurance

Build an energy budget

Measure or estimate current for drive, compute, sensors, radios, video and payload operation. Convert each load to watt-hours over its expected duty cycle, add conversion losses and reserve, and compare the result with usable battery energy rather than the nameplate maximum. A simple planning expression is runtime = usable watt-hours / average watts; replace the estimate with a measured load profile as soon as a drive base exists.

Separate high-current motor wiring from sensitive logic where practical. Put a correctly rated fuse or breaker close to the battery, provide an accessible main isolation device and label every connector. Regulators need headroom for motor transients, and the computer should not reboot when a manipulator starts. Add current and voltage logging so an unexpected drain is visible during a test rather than during a scored run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design for the event’s operating-time rule

CIRC 2027 expects at least one hour of continuous operation from onboard power and permits battery servicing between tasks subject to task rules. That requirement belongs to CIRC 2027, not every event. Test the complete rover, including radio, video and payload, on representative terrain for longer than the nominal run. Record battery temperature, minimum voltage, controller temperature and remaining capacity.

Make batteries, fuses and high-failure connectors accessible without dismantling the rover. Use keyed connectors, strain relief and a written polarity check. If the rules allow a battery swap, rehearse it with gloved operators and a timer; if they do not, size the pack and cooling for the entire permitted operating period.

Choose compute and sensors from the scored actions

Separate safety-critical control from high-level autonomy

A low-level controller should enforce command timeouts, limits and a safe motor-off state even if the high-level computer or radio link fails. The onboard computer can handle mapping, vision and mission logic, while the motor interface supplies bounded velocity or torque commands. Keep a tested manual mode available for recovery and inspection.

Use a clear startup sequence: physical isolation off, computer boot, communications check, motor-controller self-test, sensor health check, then operator enable. Log firmware, calibration and configuration versions. A reproducible software image is as important as a spare motor.

Map each sensor to a decision

  • Encoders: estimate wheel motion and detect a stalled or slipping drive.
  • Inertial sensing: supports attitude and motion estimates when the terrain or task makes orientation important.
  • Range or depth sensing: useful only where obstacle clearance, approach distance or object geometry affects a scored action.
  • Camera: select field of view and lighting tolerance from the task; protect the lens and provide a cleanable window.
  • Positioning: use the method permitted by the event and test it without assuming field internet or external infrastructure.

Every sensor adds power, data, calibration and failure modes. A smaller, well-calibrated set is often more useful than an untested collection of modules.

Design communications and radio compliance early

Draw the complete path from operator input to motor command and back through telemetry and video. Identify which messages are safety-critical, which can tolerate delay and what the rover does when packets stop. Mount antennas away from high-current wiring and conductive covers, and provide a known-good fallback mode for driving home.

CIRC 2027 example

CIRC 2027 requires wireless operation for official scoring and calls for a stand-alone system that does not rely on cellular or satellite services. It permits tethering for development or testing only with judge approval. Verify the allowed bands, power levels and any local radio-law obligations before arriving; the full language is in the CIRC 2027 rules.

URC 2026 example

The URC 2026 Q&A says satellite internet relay is not allowed. It also states that a team needing differential GNSS must establish its own GNSS base station because field internet is unavailable. These are URC 2026 conditions, not a blanket rule for every rover event; consult the URC 2026 Q&A and current organizer clarifications.

Build the payload as part of the rover, not as an afterthought

Translate each scored action into a mechanical interface: approach direction, reach, force, grip or tool geometry, camera view, cycle time and allowable operator intervention. Reserve mass and power in the system model, and check that the payload’s center of gravity does not compromise climbing or braking.

Use quick-release mounts only when they are mechanically secure and permitted by the rules. Protect flexible cables at every moving joint, provide hard stops and include a manual recovery position. A tool that completes one laboratory demonstration but cannot be reset quickly in the field is not competition-ready.

Follow a staged build process

  1. Freeze requirements. Copy mission tasks, limits, safety clauses, radio rules, budget definitions, transport requirements and intervention penalties into the worksheet. Mark unresolved questions for the organizer.
  2. Approve the architecture. Review the block diagram, mass and power budgets, interface list, emergency stop concept and planned student-built work before purchasing major parts.
  3. Bench-test power. Assemble the battery, isolation, fuse, regulators and distribution on a protected bench. Verify polarity, no-load voltage, current limits and shutdown behavior with a meter and an appropriate load.
  4. Bring up one drive unit. Connect one motor, controller and encoder. Confirm direction, command limits, encoder sign, current behavior and a reliable stop before duplicating the channel.
  5. Establish teleoperation. Implement the radio link, heartbeat timeout, operator enable and emergency stop. Test with the wheels lifted, then at walking speed in an open area.
  6. Integrate the complete drive base. Install all motors, suspension, guards, battery and computing hardware. Check straight-line tracking, turning, braking, cable movement and thermal behavior.
  7. Add sensors incrementally. Calibrate one sensor at a time, record its configuration and confirm that a failed or disconnected sensor produces a visible fault rather than a dangerous command.
  8. Install the intended payload. Recheck center of gravity, mass, current draw, reach, visibility and service access. Repeat the drive and stop tests with the payload fitted.
  9. Run representative terrain trials. Use surfaces, slopes, obstacles, darkness and weather exposure that resemble the event where safe and permitted. Measure energy use and temperatures, not just whether the rover moved.
  10. Rehearse missions. Run the exact task order with the actual operator station, spares, setup time and permitted intervention rules. Log every fault, repair it, then repeat the test after any hardware or software change.

This sequence is an engineering plan derived from the field, endurance, communications and safety demands in the cited rules; no competition source establishes one universal formal test protocol.

Verify reliability before optimizing performance

Use a test matrix

Test Pass condition Evidence to keep
Emergency stop and link loss All hazardous motion stops in the rule-compliant way and stays stopped until an intentional reset Test date, configuration, observer and result
Loaded climb and descent Rover maintains traction, does not tip and brakes without overheating Payload, slope, surface and temperature log
Endurance Completes the required duration with voltage, current and temperatures inside limits Time series and battery state before and after
Communications range Command, telemetry and required video remain usable at the field geometry Distance, antenna setup, channel and dropout record
Weather and contamination Protection, connectors and optics remain functional under permitted natural conditions Conditions, cleaning procedure and post-test inspection
Transport and setup Required team members can carry, assemble and make the rover safe within the event procedure Timed video or checklist signed by the team lead
Mission repeatability Several complete runs meet the scoring actions without an unplanned intervention Run sheets, faults and corrective actions

Do not treat a single successful demonstration as proof. Repeat after changing firmware, wiring, battery configuration, payload geometry or radio settings. Maintain a known-good configuration that can be restored before a match.

Control the budget and documentation

Separate design decisions from shopping decisions. Keep a bill of materials with quantity, unit cost, shipping, taxes, substitutions, owner and rule status. Track donated or borrowed equipment if the event counts it. For URC 2026, the Q&A identifies a $24,000 strict limit for the fielded configuration, including the base station; do not assume that treatment applies elsewhere.

Maintain wiring diagrams, connector pinouts, battery records, software hashes, calibration files, maintenance intervals, spare-part locations and a fault log. URC 2026 requires an expense report in Work Breakdown Structure format; use the accounting detail described in its official material at URC 2026 Requirements & Guidelines. Documentation also lets a new team member repair the rover without relying on one graduating student.

Compare candidate designs with a decision matrix

When two architectures both satisfy the hard rules, score them against the work the rover must perform. Use a 1-to-5 team rating only after defining what each score means, and attach a short test or calculation to every rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Evidence to compare
Terrain capability Measured traction, clearance, stability and recovery behavior on representative surfaces
Loaded mass and transport Scale reading, carry test and compliance with the event’s handling rule
Endurance Measured watt-hours per mission and battery-service time
Control precision Stopping distance, low-speed repeatability and payload positioning
Complexity and repairability Part count, tool requirements, access time and available spares
Communications Dropout rate, video usability, antenna setup and legal compliance
Cost and accounting Complete fielded cost under the event’s definition, including the operator station where required
Scoring value Number and reliability of actual task actions completed, not merely driving performance

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely causes Fix path
Computer reboots when driving or moving the arm Voltage sag, undersized regulator, shared wiring impedance or poor connector Log minimum voltage, separate logic regulation, shorten high-current paths, improve protection and retest under peak load.
Rover veers or turns inconsistently Encoder sign error, unequal gearing, tire diameter difference or skid-steer scrub Check each channel independently, calibrate wheel parameters and validate on the actual surface.
Motors overheat during a mission Gearing too tall, excessive payload, continuous stall-like operation or poor cooling Measure current and duty cycle, reduce force demand, change gearing or add cooling; do not rely on a brief no-load test.
Radio works in the lab but fails at the field Antenna shadowing, interference, changed channel rules or an unapproved infrastructure dependency Recheck the event’s spectrum rules, test at field distances, relocate antennas and keep a compliant fallback configuration.
Payload succeeds once but cannot reset Limited access, cable snagging, no mechanical home position or fragile tool Add hard stops, strain relief, a reset routine, quick inspection points and a spare high-failure part.
Rover passes a bench test but fails outdoors Dust, mud, rain, glare, darkness, loose ground or temperature not represented in testing Run controlled environmental trials, seal or shield vulnerable parts and document cleaning and recovery procedures.
Team is stopped at inspection Unclear mass, missing expense records, unsafe isolation, prohibited purchased assembly or undocumented radio Perform a pre-inspection using the current checklist and bring rule citations, labels, diagrams and certificates where required.

Prepare the event-day operating procedure

  1. Inspect frame, wheels or tracks, guards, fasteners, connectors and payload attachment.
  2. Check battery identity, charge state, fuse, isolation and measured open-circuit voltage.
  3. Boot in the documented sequence and confirm software, calibration, radio channel, telemetry and video.
  4. Test emergency stop, command timeout and manual recovery before entering the field.
  5. Record start time, battery state and configuration identifier on the run sheet.
  6. Use one operator checklist and one spotter or safety role where the event permits; call out mode changes.
  7. After the run, isolate power before servicing, record faults while they are fresh and inspect heat, water, mud and loose hardware.

The best small competition rover is not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one whose team can explain every requirement, carry and power it legally, recover it safely, and repeat the scored actions after a full-duration field test.
