Yes—you can build a small playable browser game in Google AI Studio without starting with a traditional codebase. In Build mode, describe the game in natural language, let AI Studio generate a web app, test it in the live preview, and improve one behavior at a time. The practical workflow is prompt, inspect, test, revise—not prompt once and assume the generated code is correct.
This guide uses a deliberately small single-player game as the example. It also explains when Gemini should run inside the finished game, how to keep API keys secure, and what changes when you share, export, deploy, or turn the prototype into a multiplayer app.

What Google AI Studio actually builds
Google AI Studio’s Build mode accepts a natural-language description and generates an application project with code, files, and a live preview. Web apps are the default. The documented setup uses a React frontend and a Node.js server runtime, so the result is more than a static mockup: it is a runnable web project that you can continue editing.
There are two different meanings of “AI game”:
- AI-assisted creation: Gemini helps write and revise the game’s code. The published game may never call an AI model while someone is playing it.
- AI at runtime: the game sends requests to a Gemini model—for example, to generate a hint, a character line, or a new story branch.
Start with the first meaning. A game that has movement, rules, scoring, and a restart button is easier to debug than one that also depends on model responses, API keys, and network availability.

Choose a game loop small enough to finish
Before opening Build mode, reduce the idea to one repeatable action. A useful one-sentence loop has a player input, an immediate game response, and a clear outcome. “Move left or right to catch falling stars before the timer reaches zero” is a workable first loop. “Build an online role-playing world with generated quests, inventory, and live combat” is not.
Decide these details before writing your first prompt:
- Input: keyboard arrows, A/D keys, pointer buttons, touch controls, or a combination.
- Objective: what the player is trying to collect, avoid, reach, or survive.
- Success and failure: a score target, a countdown reaching zero, lost health, or another unambiguous condition.
- Game state: the values that must change while playing, such as player position, falling-object positions, score, and time remaining.
- Reset behavior: what the restart button resets and whether a start screen appears before the first round.
- Presentation: a simple visual style, screen orientation, and whether the first version needs sound or animation.
Keep the first release self-contained. You can add images, sound, persistence, accounts, or AI-generated content after the core loop works in the preview.

Build mode does not require a special command language, but a structured description gives it fewer design decisions to guess. State the game loop first, then controls, rules, interface, and constraints. Ask for a playable first version rather than a long list of future features.
For example:
Build a small single-player browser game where the player moves a character left and right to catch falling stars. Add keyboard controls, a score, a 30-second timer, a start screen, and a restart button. Use simple shapes and make the game playable on desktop and mobile. Show the code and keep the first version self-contained.
This is a prompt design example, not a claim that every requirement will be implemented perfectly on the first generation. Treat the first preview as an inspection point. If the app is too ambitious, remove features instead of asking for several unrelated systems at once.

Build the first playable version in Build mode
- Open Google AI Studio and choose Build mode. Start a new app and enter the game description. Web app generation is the normal starting point, so you do not need to create a React project or Node server manually for the initial prototype.
- Wait for the project and live preview. Read the generated screen and test it as a player. Check whether the game starts, whether the controls respond, whether objects move, and whether the stated win or loss condition can actually occur.
- Test the complete loop once. Do not focus only on colors or typography. Try to start a round, play until success or failure, and press restart. A game that looks finished but cannot reset is not a finished prototype.
- Ask for one correction at a time. Use a short follow-up such as “Make the left and right controls move the player at a constant speed and keep the player inside the game area.” Then test again before requesting collision detection or visual changes.
- Use annotation mode for visible interface changes. Select or annotate the part of the preview that needs work and describe the change. This is useful for requests such as moving the score, enlarging the restart button, or improving contrast.
- Edit the generated files directly when a small change is clearer in code. Prompting is convenient for structural changes; direct editing can be faster for a number, a label, a color, or a single conditional. Read the surrounding code before changing it so you do not remove state that another feature uses.
After each change, test the behavior that could have been affected. Generated code can be syntactically valid while still containing incorrect game rules, timing, collision boundaries, or reset logic.
Refine the game in a reliable order
1. Make movement predictable
Ask AI Studio to define exactly which inputs are supported and what happens when the player reaches an edge. For keyboard play, specify whether the arrow keys, A/D keys, or both should work. For touch play, request visible left and right buttons or a pointer-control region rather than assuming a keyboard is available.
Test holding a key, tapping repeatedly, changing direction quickly, and reaching both edges. If the player accelerates indefinitely or leaves the board, ask for a bounded position and a consistent movement step. A simple prototype does not need a sophisticated physics engine; predictable movement is more valuable than realism.
2. Add collision rules
Describe what counts as a hit in plain language. “Count a star when its visible shape overlaps the player” is clearer than “add collision.” Also state what happens after a hit: remove the star, increase the score, spawn another object, or reduce a life.
Check edge cases deliberately. Test a collision near the left and right boundaries, two objects arriving together, and an object that passes just beside the player. If the generated hitbox feels too generous, ask it to use the visible dimensions or show the collision rectangles temporarily for debugging.

3. Add score and timer state
Request one authoritative score value and one timer value rather than separate counters for the display and the game logic. Specify when the timer starts and stops. A 30-second timer should begin when the player presses Start, stop at zero, and prevent additional scoring after the round ends.
Ask for a visible end-state message that reports the final score and exposes the restart action. Then test waiting without moving, scoring on the final second, and restarting immediately after a round ends.
4. Make restart a true reset
A restart should clear the score, restore the timer, place the player at its initial position, remove old falling objects, and start a fresh loop. Tell AI Studio those reset requirements explicitly. A common defect is leaving an old animation timer or event listener active, which makes the second round run faster or count points twice.
5. Improve mobile usability
Use the live preview at a narrow width and test the game with touch if possible. Ask for buttons large enough to tap, a layout that fits without horizontal scrolling, and a pause or stop behavior if the browser loses focus. Keep critical text readable against the background. If the game is intended primarily for desktop, say so; otherwise, make mobile controls part of the first functional pass rather than a final decoration.
6. Add visual polish last
Once the loop is dependable, request a visual theme, simple transitions, sound controls, or animated backgrounds one change at a time. Keep a working version before each major change. If a decorative request breaks input or timing, revert it and reapply the change more narrowly.

Use Gemini inside the game only when it adds value
A model call can make a game feel dynamic, but it also introduces a network request, failure states, latency, usage limits, and credential handling. Good first uses include a hint button, a short character response after a level, or a procedurally varied story prompt. None of those is required for a complete catching game.
When you add runtime Gemini behavior, describe the boundary clearly: the browser handles player input and rendering, while the server receives a constrained request, calls the model, validates the response, and returns only the data the game needs. Do not send unrestricted game state or user-controlled instructions to a model unless you have a reason to do so.
Keep credentials on the server
Build mode supports a server-side Node.js runtime, package use, and server-side secrets. Google’s Build guidance says new apps that use Gemini can have the key configured as a server-side secret rather than exposed in client-side code. Use the Secrets manager for sensitive keys and do not paste a key into a React component, a public configuration file, or a prompt that will be shared.
A safe implementation pattern is:
- Store the Gemini key in the app’s server-side secret configuration.
- Have a server route receive a narrowly defined request, such as a request for one hint.
- Call the model from that server route, not from browser JavaScript.
- Validate length, format, and allowed values before returning the response to the game.
- Show a fallback message when the request fails, times out, or is refused.
Model calls count toward applicable usage limits, and paid models can create charges depending on the model and account conditions. Check the current Google AI Studio and API settings before enabling a feature that calls a model on every move or for every player.

Preview, share, export, or deploy?
These options serve different purposes. A live preview is for iteration. Sharing is useful when someone needs to try the app or fork its code. A downloaded ZIP or GitHub synchronization supports local development and version control. Cloud Run is a route to an externally deployed service, but deployment and API use can create usage-based charges.
Best Value
| Option | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| AI Studio live preview | Building and debugging the first loop | Controls, reset behavior, layout, and generated code |
| Share the app | Letting others try or fork the project | What viewers can access and whether the app makes API calls |
| GitHub sync | Keeping a change history and collaborating | Which files and secrets are included; never commit private keys |
| Download ZIP | Continuing development on a local machine | Install the required dependencies and recreate secret configuration safely |
| Cloud Run deployment | Serving the app outside the AI Studio preview | Deployment settings, traffic, API usage, and current Cloud Run pricing |
Before sharing publicly, remove test credentials, confirm that error messages do not reveal secrets, and decide whether anyone should be able to trigger model calls. Preview access and public deployment are not the same thing: the latter requires you to understand the service’s audience, configuration, and ongoing usage.
Turn a prototype into a multiplayer game only after single-player works
Multiplayer adds synchronized state, identity or session handling, conflict resolution, reconnection behavior, and a way to test more than one player. Google’s full-stack guidance demonstrates the kind of request AI Studio can handle with the example: “Make this a multiplayer game where players can see each other’s cursors.” That example shows a supported direction, not a promise that a complete multiplayer game will work without debugging.
For a first extension, choose one shared value—such as cursor position or a ready status—before attempting shared combat, inventories, or matchmaking. Test with multiple browser tabs or shared app access. Verify what happens when a tab closes, a connection drops, two players update the same value, or a new player joins halfway through a round.
| Design | State that must be synchronized | Why it is appropriate |
|---|---|---|
| Single-player | One browser’s player, objects, score, and timer | Smallest scope and easiest debugging path |
| Cursor-sharing prototype | Each player’s position or pointer | Demonstrates real-time communication without complex rules |
| Competitive multiplayer | Players, authoritative scoring, timing, reconnection, and anti-cheat decisions | Requires substantially more testing and server design |
Do not confuse prompt prototyping with Build mode
The Gemini API quickstart describes a separate prompt workflow: experiment with a prompt, and when it is satisfactory, use “Get code” to begin coding or save and share the prompt. That is useful for designing a model interaction, such as the wording and response format for a hint generator.
Build mode is the application workflow: it creates project files, a web interface, and a live preview that you can revise. You can use the prompt workflow to shape a runtime AI feature, then implement that feature in the Build-mode project with server-side secrets. A polished prompt alone is not a game, and a generated game does not need a model call.
Troubleshoot the first prototype
| Symptom | Likely cause | Targeted fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when a key is pressed | The event listener is attached to the wrong element, focus is elsewhere, or the requested keys were not implemented | Ask which keys are supported, ensure the game listens at the document or game-container level, and add visible touch controls for mobile |
| The player leaves the play area | Position changes are not clamped to the board dimensions | Request boundary checks based on the player’s actual width and the current canvas or container size |
| Score increases repeatedly for one object | The object remains active after a collision or multiple animation loops are running | Remove or mark the object immediately after a hit and ensure only one game loop updates state |
| The second round is faster | Restart created another timer or animation callback without clearing the first | Ask for one stored loop handle and an explicit cleanup step before starting a new round |
| The timer reaches zero but play continues | The timer display and game-running state are independent | Make zero set a single game-over state that stops movement, collisions, and scoring |
| The preview is blank or shows a runtime error | A generated import, package, or component contract is invalid | Read the first console error, ask AI Studio to fix that specific error, and retest before adding another feature |
| A Gemini feature fails in production | The secret is missing, the request exceeds a limit, or the model response is not in the expected format | Check server-side secret configuration, add timeout and fallback handling, and validate the response before rendering it |
| The game looks fine on desktop but not on a phone | Keyboard-only controls, fixed dimensions, or text that does not resize | Test a narrow viewport, request responsive sizing and touch controls, and remove horizontal overflow |
| Unexpected charges appear after deployment | Cloud Run traffic or model calls are using billable resources | Review deployment and API settings, limit requests, stop unused services, and consult current Google pricing before publishing |
A practical completion checklist
- The first screen explains the objective and shows how to control the player.
- A new player can start a round without opening developer tools.
- Movement stays inside the play area on desktop and mobile layouts.
- Collisions happen once per object and produce the intended score or penalty.
- The timer, success condition, and failure condition agree with one another.
- Restart clears every piece of round state and does not create duplicate loops.
- The game remains playable if an optional model request fails.
- API keys and other secrets exist only in server-side secret configuration.
- You have tested the shared or deployed version separately from the AI Studio preview.
- You understand which API calls, hosting resources, and model choices may create usage charges.
What to build next
Once the small game survives repeated starts, edge-case collisions, narrow screens, and a failed network request, choose one direction: a richer single-player level, a narrowly scoped Gemini hint or story feature, or a multiplayer experiment with one synchronized value. Keep each change independently testable and preserve a working version before moving on. That discipline turns AI Studio from a one-shot code generator into a practical prompt-to-prototype development loop.
