Build your post-career budget from money you can verify today—not the salary you used to earn. Record accessible assets, confirmed income, debts, household costs, taxes, and health coverage; then test the plan against a lower-income scenario before deciding what discretionary spending is affordable. There is no universal athlete retirement formula: league, country, plan rules, age, tax residence, health, and household obligations all change the answer.

What information do you need before making a budget?

Start with a financial snapshot. Use current statements, benefit documents, contracts, and bills rather than estimates based on memory. Note the date playing income stopped or is expected to stop, since timing affects both cash flow and eligibility for benefits.

  • Cash and liquid reserves: record balances you can access, separately from assets that are invested, restricted, or subject to withdrawal rules.
  • Accounts and investments: list retirement accounts, pension information, investment statements, and any other assets. Record applicable access conditions, fees, or plan rules rather than assuming the full balance is immediately spendable.
  • Debts: capture each balance, interest rate, minimum payment, and due date.
  • Household commitments: identify dependants, recurring support, caregiving or education costs, and shared obligations.
  • Upcoming changes: note likely moves, career training, medical needs, benefit decisions, or other events that could change income or expenses.

This snapshot is the input to the budget, not a personal financial recommendation. An individual plan also requires jurisdiction, tax residence, benefit eligibility, account terms, and actual income and expense amounts.

How do you turn post-career income into a monthly plan?

Create an income calendar rather than relying on one headline annual figure. For each source, record the amount, payment frequency, expected start and end dates, certainty, and any taxes or costs attached to it. Include only income that applies to you and verify it under the relevant contract or plan.

  • Pension or league benefits, if you are eligible and have confirmed the terms.
  • 401(k) distributions or withdrawals from other retirement accounts, subject to their governing rules.
  • Employment or second-career earnings.
  • Endorsements, business proceeds, or rental and investment income.
  • Social Security where applicable and once you have confirmed your own circumstances.

Do not treat an account balance as monthly income, or an uncertain opportunity as a dependable payment. Show taxes and business costs separately so gross receipts do not appear to be money available for household spending.

Build three planning cases

These are stress tests, not predictions. They help reveal whether the household’s commitments depend on uncertain income.

Case What to include What it helps you examine
Lower-income Confirmed income, with optional work or commercial earnings reduced or excluded. Whether essential commitments remain manageable if new earnings do not materialize.
Expected Current evidence about likely income, with assumptions identified and dated. The plan you will use for routine decisions while tracking whether assumptions hold.
Higher-income Potential work, endorsements, business proceeds, or other uncertain income, clearly separated from confirmed sources. How to use extra income without depending on it for essential bills.

Update the assumptions when you receive new information. A projected contract, business sale, or future benefit should not quietly become a confirmed monthly amount.

How should you sort expenses before choosing a lifestyle budget?

Populate categories from bank and card statements, bills, insurance documents, and debt schedules. Start with actual obligations; no percentage split is established as suitable for all retired athletes.

  • Essential fixed: housing, utilities, insurance premiums, required debt payments, and basic household costs.
  • Essential variable: food, transportation, health care, and out-of-pocket medical costs.
  • Family and support: dependants, education, caregiving, and recurring help for relatives or others.
  • Career transition: education, credentials, job search, relocation, or business costs, if relevant.
  • Discretionary: travel, vehicles, recreation, gifts, and optional purchases.
  • Irregular: property repairs, annual insurance, taxes, major medical expenses, and other bills that do not arrive monthly.

Convert nonmonthly bills into a monthly planning amount so they do not arrive as surprises. Compare the resulting baseline with each income case, especially the lower-income one. If essential costs exceed reliable income, identify changes or qualified advice to investigate before treating discretionary spending as affordable.

How do taxes and health coverage fit into the budget?

Estimate taxes for your own jurisdictions and income types

Set aside a separate tax line rather than budgeting all gross income as spendable. A professional athlete’s tax position can involve more than one jurisdiction and different types of income. Ask a qualified tax professional familiar with the relevant jurisdictions to estimate your obligations using your actual residence, work history, income, and dates. Wells Fargo Advisors’ athlete guide discusses multi-state taxation and domicile, but it is a commercial guide and its tax details can become outdated; do not use generic rates from it as personal advice.

Budget for health costs after playing

List premiums, deductibles, co-pays, ongoing care, and dependant coverage using the coverage available to you. Do not assume that league-related coverage continues after a career ends or applies to every retiree; eligibility and terms depend on the relevant plan and individual circumstances.

For former NFL players specifically, NFL Life Line lists benefits and insurance information and describes the 88 Plan as reimbursing specified health costs for vested players with dementia, ALS, or Parkinson’s disease. It is not general health insurance, and that description does not establish eligibility for any particular person.

How do you verify pension, 401(k), and league benefits?

Use current plan documents and the relevant benefits office to confirm eligibility, payment amounts, start dates, survivor provisions, withdrawal conditions, and any effect of a decision on other benefits. Do not infer your entitlement from a league resource page or another player’s experience.

If you played in the NFL

NFL and NFLPA resources list subjects including pension, 401(k), insurance, financial guidance, and transition support. They do not establish a specific former player’s eligibility or benefit amount. NFL Life Line identifies The Trust as a transition resource covering financial, career, health, education, personal-interaction, and lifestyle areas. It also lists financial assistance organizations for eligible former players facing hardship. These are support programs with their own rules, not replacement income available to every retiree.

NFL.com’s description, published March 15, 2017, calls The Trust “an ecosystem of support for former players, with an emphasis on overall health and successful transition from professional football.” Use the current program and plan information to determine what applies to you.

If you are a professional footballer in the UK

The Professional Footballers’ Association described MyProPlan in a May 11, 2020 announcement as covering financial foundations and budgeting, retirement, saving, income protection, debt costs, pension planning, and reviewing progress. The PFA’s announcement warned that football careers “can end suddenly,” putting players and dependants at risk without planning. Because the description dates from 2020, check with the PFA whether the tool is currently available and what it now offers. It is UK footballer-specific, not a general benefit for athletes elsewhere.

How should you handle debt and cash reserves?

List each debt alongside its minimum payment, balance, rate, and due date. Distinguish urgent or costly obligations from lower-rate debt, but do not make a payoff decision based on interest rate alone: taxes, liquidity, investment consequences, and plan rules can matter. Ask a qualified adviser to evaluate trade-offs using your full circumstances.

Set a cash reserve based on household needs, how reliable income is, and how quickly other funds can be accessed. The available league and association resources do not establish a universal number of months’ expenses for retired athletes. Avoid adopting a target as a rule without considering your own obligations and access to funds.

How do you choose a tracking method and keep the plan current?

A spreadsheet, budgeting app, or paper workbook can work if you consistently enter income, bills, irregular expenses, and account changes. When comparing tools, check:

  • Whether the cost is one-time or recurring.
  • How the tool handles irregular income and nonmonthly bills.
  • Privacy practices and whether household members can share access.
  • Whether data can be exported if you change tools.
  • Whether multiple currencies or jurisdictions matter for your situation.

NFL Life Line describes a Money Management International workbook created for NFL-related budget management and financial education. That reference does not establish that the NFL workbook is sold to the public or is available through a particular retailer.

Check monthly cash flow and revisit the full plan when circumstances change: for example, after a job or business change, move, health event, benefit decision, major purchase, or change in household responsibilities. The PFA’s MyProPlan description includes tracking goals and progress and reviewing changed objectives; it does not prescribe a universal review frequency.

How do you choose professional financial help?

Look for an adviser whose credentials and regulatory registration fit your jurisdiction, and compare relevant athlete or entertainment-industry experience. Ask what the engagement includes—planning, investment management, tax coordination, insurance, or estate planning—and how fees, conflicts, custody of assets, and recommendations will be explained.

The NFLPA says its individual registered financial advisers are vetted against educational, experiential, and regulatory standards, and that services can include planning, investing, tax, and estate matters. This is a league-specific resource, not a blanket endorsement of every adviser or a guarantee that a particular service suits you. Ask any adviser to explain the applicable registration, fee arrangement, and scope of work in your own case.

Use league or players’ association support resources before assuming a commercial product is necessary. NFL players can check NFL benefits, The Trust, and NFLPA guidance; UK professional footballers can ask the PFA about its resources. None replaces individualized tax, legal, investment, or benefits advice.

What if income after sport is lower than expected?

Use the lower-income case to decide in advance which discretionary costs can be reduced and which obligations require a different solution. Recheck the income calendar, payment dates, debt minimums, health coverage, and upcoming irregular bills. If a gap threatens essential commitments, contact relevant benefits offices and qualified advisers promptly rather than treating uncertain business, endorsement, or investment income as certain.

Associated Press reported in 2026 that one in six NFL players filed for bankruptcy within 12 years of retirement, describing the figure as based on academic research; the article passage does not identify the underlying study. It should not be read as independently verified primary research or as a prediction about an individual player. In the same coverage, Megan Rapinoe observed of athletes receiving substantial earnings, “They are coming into a lot of money, and they don’t know what to do with it.” The practical response is to establish a documented plan and keep adjusting it as verified circumstances change.
