Build for the board you have, not a perfect team you hope to find: take useful early units, favor pieces that support more than one next step, and spend with later rounds in mind. In autobattlers such as Teamfight Tactics (TFT) and Hearthstone Battlegrounds, “deck” usually means your in-match team or board—not a constructed card deck with an opening hand. Their rules differ, so treat this as a decision process, not a universal lineup.
What “early-game deck” means in an autobattler
In TFT, players draft champions from a shared pool, manage economy, equip items, and position a team for automatic combat. Riot’s overview emphasizes that there are multiple ways to win and that players must adapt: What is Teamfight Tactics? In Hearthstone Battlegrounds, players recruit minions during tavern phases and send an evolving board into automatic combat. These are not the same as choosing an opening hand from a constructed card deck.

Because the available units, sets, and rules change, no single early lineup is dependable across games or patches. Use the current pool and rules for the specific autobattler you are playing; the official fundamentals cited here do not establish current costs, balance, or best compositions.
How to choose early units
Take immediate value before speculative synergy
Ask what a unit contributes if it is the last piece you find for several rounds. A unit that can help the current board is generally a safer choice than several weak pieces collected solely for a hoped-for future combination. This is a practical inference from Riot’s advice to respond to the champions appearing in the draft, not a quoted rule or guaranteed winning formula.

Prefer overlap and flexible follow-ups
Look for a recruit that improves the team you already have while leaving a plausible route into a later composition. Synergy still matters: complementary traits or effects can make a team stronger. But committing early to a plan that requires specific missing pieces makes you vulnerable when the draft does not provide them. Riot describes both understanding interlocking traits and adapting to available champions as parts of TFT mastery: /dev: Design Pillars of TFT.
Compare candidates on the same questions
When two options compete, weigh their immediate board contribution, fit with units already held, cost in currency or refreshes, flexibility toward later compositions, equipment fit, and placement or attack-order implications. These are useful comparison questions inferred from the games’ mechanics, not a tested scoring system.

Spend for the current round and the rounds ahead
A purchase, shop refresh, or upgrade has an opportunity cost: the same resources might preserve flexibility or help you reach a later option. In TFT, Riot explicitly includes gold income and economy management among the game’s systems. In Battlegrounds, the cited introductory guide describes recruiting, refreshing, selling, freezing offers, upgrading the Tavern, and triples; it also explains that Tavern tier affects the strength of offers. Those are historical descriptions from Blizzard’s 2019 introduction, not confirmation of today’s exact rules or costs: Introducing Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Check the live game before relying on a specific economy rule.

Use the whole board, including placement
Automatic combat does not make positioning irrelevant. A unit’s place on the board can affect when it attacks and how its effects interact with allies and opponents. Blizzard’s introductory Battlegrounds article describes left-side minions attacking first and discusses positioning around Taunt and effects such as Poisonous, Deathrattle, and Divine Shield. These are game-specific mechanics documented in that article, not general rules for every autobattler; verify current mechanics before applying a precise placement tactic.
Before combat, consider which units need to act early, which should survive to use their effects, and whether a front-line or protective effect changes the safest arrangement. Revisit placement when the opposing board changes rather than relying on one layout.

Reassess after every round
Do not keep pursuing a composition just because it was your first idea. Check what the pool is offering, how well your current board is holding up, and—where the game reveals this—what opponents appear to be building. Riot identifies sensitivity to available champions, opponent strategies, open champions, and counter-building as elements of TFT mastery. That supports adapting to the game state rather than following a static early-game list.

Do not confuse autobattler recruiting with a constructed-deck opening
Advice for the first turns of constructed Hearthstone concerns cards in hand and a particular deck archetype. Blizzard’s 2018 guide describes aggro as using cards quickly, tempo as investing in board presence and removal, and control as sometimes trading early life for card advantage and later stabilization: Opening Moves: Those First 5 Turns. Its mulligan advice likewise says opening-card choices depend on deck style and opponent: Opening Moves: Mulligans. Those are not shop-based autobattler rules; do not transfer opening-hand prescriptions directly to recruiting and board-building.
