The shortest reliable path is a server-anchored WebSocket connection to wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime. Keep your permanent xAI API key on that server, create a browser-safe ephemeral client secret when the user connects from a web page, configure the current Grok voice model, then relay microphone audio upstream and streamed response audio back to the speaker.

Build the speech loop before adding tools, search, business state, or telephony. This order gives you a small system that is easy to diagnose: connect, authenticate, speak, hear a response, measure interruptions, and only then add application behavior.

What Grok Voice 3.0 provides

Grok Voice 3.0 is exposed through xAI’s Voice Agent API as a full-duplex speech-to-speech model. Full duplex means incoming speech and generated speech can overlap, which is essential for natural interruptions rather than a strict “wait, answer, wait” turn cycle. xAI also advertises tool use, search, multi-turn conversation, built-in reasoning, and support for more than 25 languages on its product page: xAI Grok Voice API.

xAI’s announcement dated October 14, 2026 reports an Artificial Analysis Speech-to-Speech Index score of 86.9 and a Full Duplex Bench score of 97%. Those are figures reported by xAI from Artificial Analysis; they are not measurements of your application. The same announcement lists a price of $0.08 per minute ($4.80 per hour). Pricing, model routing, and aliases can change, so verify them in the live documentation before budgeting or hard-coding a model name: Introducing Grok Voice 3.0.

Capability What is established What you still need to decide
Transport Realtime WebSocket endpoint at wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime Direct WebSocket, WebRTC, a media platform, or a phone provider
Conversation Speech-to-speech, multi-turn context, and interruption-oriented full duplex How much history your application stores and when it summarizes it
Actions Tool use and search are product capabilities Which narrowly scoped tools you expose and how you authorize them
Languages More than 25 languages are advertised Your supported locales, voices, prompts, and language-specific tests

Choose a transport before writing the agent

The WebSocket route is the clearest first implementation because it exposes the API’s JSON event stream directly. Other transports can reduce browser media work or add operational features, but they change where buffering, interruption, recording, and reconnection are handled.

Option Best fit Trade-offs to plan for
Direct WebSocket A small server or a learning implementation You own microphone capture, audio conversion, playback, reconnects, and observability.
WebRTC A browser agent where low-latency media handling matters Signaling, permissions, device changes, and browser media behavior add complexity.
LiveKit Production media orchestration, rooms, and multiple participants An additional media layer and its operational concepts; follow the current xAI integration path.
Twilio Telephone access and inbound or outbound calls Telephony numbers, call-control events, recording rules, and provider charges become part of the system.

xAI’s voice overview lists Web Agent, Twilio Phone Agent, WebRTC Agent, and an iOS tester as supported demonstration paths: xAI voice overview. Start with direct WebSocket unless your delivery channel already dictates another choice.

Use a server as the trust boundary

A permanent xAI API key belongs in a server environment variable, never in JavaScript shipped to a browser, a mobile bundle, a Git repository, or a support ticket. The Voice Inference API accepts that key in an Authorization: Bearer header for server connections. Browser clients should receive only a short-lived ephemeral client secret minted by your server. The API reference documents the browser subprotocol form as xai-client-secret.<EPHEMERAL_TOKEN>: Voice Inference API reference.

Server-side connection checklist

  1. Create an xAI project and API key using the account controls documented by xAI.
  2. Store the key in a secret manager or an environment variable such as XAI_API_KEY; restrict who and what can read it.
  3. Allow outbound WebSocket traffic to api.x.ai from the agent service.
  4. Log connection identifiers, event types, durations, and error codes, but redact keys, ephemeral secrets, raw transcripts, and sensitive audio.
  5. Apply per-user rate limits before opening an upstream session so a public endpoint cannot turn into an unbounded bill.

Browser authentication flow

  1. The browser requests your authenticated endpoint, for example POST /voice-token.
  2. Your server authenticates the user, asks xAI for an ephemeral client secret using the current Voice API procedure, and returns only that secret plus any short expiry information.
  3. The browser opens wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime with the xai-client-secret.<EPHEMERAL_TOKEN> WebSocket subprotocol.
  4. When the secret expires, close the session and repeat the server-mediated minting flow. Do not silently fall back to a permanent key in the browser.

Open the realtime WebSocket

The documented connection is an HTTP GET upgraded to WebSocket. A minimal Node.js server-side connection looks like this:

import WebSocket from "ws";

const socket = new WebSocket("wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime", {
  headers: {
    Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.XAI_API_KEY}`
  }
});

socket.on("open", () => {
  console.log("realtime connection established");
  // Send the session-configuration event defined in the current xAI reference.
});

socket.on("message", (raw) => {
  const event = JSON.parse(raw.toString());
  // Route session, audio, tool, completion, and error events here.
});

socket.on("close", (code, reason) => {
  console.log("realtime connection closed", code, reason.toString());
});

socket.on("error", (error) => {
  console.error("realtime socket error", error);
});

The socket exchanges JSON messages for session configuration, streamed audio, responses, and errors. Event names, required fields, audio codecs, and sample rates are API details that can change; copy them from the current Voice Inference API reference rather than relying on an older example.

Configure the session without hard-coding a stale model alias

After the socket opens, send xAI’s documented session-configuration event. Set the current Grok Voice 3.0 model identifier exposed in the live model list, choose the voice and language options your application needs, and specify the input and output audio format required by your chosen capture and playback path. Because model aliases and routing are volatile, keep the identifier in configuration rather than scattering it through application code.

A useful configuration object in your own code should have separate fields for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model: the currently documented Grok voice model identifier.
  • Instructions: a short system policy covering role, tone, language, escalation, and what the agent must never claim.
  • Turn detection: the server- or client-side speech-boundary behavior recommended by the current API.
  • Audio formats: the exact codec, sample rate, channel count, and encoding accepted by the API and your playback device.
  • Tools: only the function definitions needed for the first user journey.

Do not proceed to business tools until a session with this configuration can receive a spoken utterance and return audible response audio.

Stream microphone audio and play the response

There are two independent media paths. The uplink captures short microphone frames and sends them as the API’s documented audio-input events. The downlink receives response-audio events and feeds decoded frames to an audio output. Keep those paths asynchronous: waiting for a complete response before reading more microphone data defeats full duplex and makes interruption handling feel sluggish.

Browser capture sequence

  1. Request microphone permission only after a user gesture and show which input device is active.
  2. Create the capture pipeline using the codec and sample rate required by the current xAI session schema. If the browser cannot produce that format, transcode on a trusted server or choose WebRTC instead of silently sending incompatible bytes.
  3. For each non-empty frame, encode it exactly as the API specifies and send the corresponding audio-input event over the open socket.
  4. Continue reading frames while the model is speaking so the user can interrupt. Apply a bounded client buffer; never let a stalled network create unlimited memory growth.
  5. On each response-audio event, decode or unwrap the frame as required and enqueue it in an audio output buffer. Start playback as soon as a playable frame arrives rather than waiting for the whole turn.
  6. Display connection, listening, thinking, speaking, and error states separately. A microphone permission failure is not the same problem as a model or network failure.

For an initial test, use a short spoken phrase, log the first response-audio timestamp, and stop after one answer. This isolates authentication, session configuration, audio encoding, and playback before you add long conversations.

Interruption and barge-in

When the user speaks during playback, immediately reduce or stop local audio output, continue sending the new microphone frames, and use the current API’s interruption or response-cancellation event if the protocol requires one. Also clear queued response audio; otherwise an old sentence can continue playing after the model has started answering the new turn. Test interruptions at the beginning, middle, and end of a sentence.

Add tools, search, and application state

xAI positions the Voice API for tool use and search, but a voice model should not receive unrestricted access to your systems. Define small functions such as “look up appointment availability” or “create a support ticket,” validate every argument on the server, and return structured success or failure data.

Tool safety rules

  • Authorize the user and tenant on the server, independently of model-supplied arguments.
  • Validate types, ranges, identifiers, and allowed operations before execution.
  • Set short timeouts and an explicit retry policy. A timed-out tool should produce a speakable recovery message, not an invisible hang.
  • Require confirmation for irreversible actions such as purchases, account deletion, or sending a legal notice.
  • Keep secrets and internal error details out of tool results returned to the model.

Store durable application state in your own database and treat the realtime session as a transport and conversation context, not as your only record. Keep a compact conversation summary when history grows, and define what happens after reconnect: resume with a summary, start a new session, or ask the user to repeat the request.

Production architecture and observability

A practical deployment separates four concerns: a web or mobile client, an authenticated session service that mints ephemeral secrets, a realtime relay or agent service holding the permanent key, and your application APIs and database. The relay should attach a request or conversation ID to logs so you can trace a tool call without storing raw audio by default.

  • Latency: record time to WebSocket open, time to first response audio, and time from interruption to new audio.
  • Reliability: count abnormal closes, reconnect attempts, dropped frames, tool timeouts, and audio decode errors.
  • Quality: review consented transcripts and recordings for missed turns, accidental interruptions, wrong-language responses, and unsafe tool execution.
  • Capacity: enforce concurrent-session limits and shut down idle sessions when the user leaves.
  • Privacy: document retention, deletion, consent, and whether audio or transcripts cross regional boundaries.

Reconnect with exponential backoff and a cap. Avoid opening several replacement sockets at once: duplicate sessions can produce overlapping speech and duplicate tool actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Migrate an OpenAI Realtime voice agent

xAI’s speech-to-speech documentation says an existing OpenAI Realtime API application can be adapted by changing the base URL, API key, and Grok voice model: xAI speech-to-speech documentation. Treat that as a transport and model migration, not a guaranteed drop-in replacement.

  1. Move the WebSocket base URL to wss://api.x.ai/v1/realtime.
  2. Replace credential handling with an xAI server key or the documented ephemeral browser secret flow.
  3. Change the model field to the currently documented Grok voice identifier.
  4. Diff the live event reference for session, audio, response, interruption, tool, and error events.
  5. Retest audio format, turn detection, barge-in, function arguments, reconnect behavior, and transcript handling.
  6. Run both systems against the same scripted conversations, then compare your own latency, failure, and task-completion metrics rather than assuming published benchmark scores predict your result.

Cost and capacity planning

The October 14, 2026 xAI announcement lists $0.08 per minute, or $4.80 per hour. At that published rate, 100 minutes would be $8 and 1,000 minutes would be $80 before any other infrastructure, media, telephony, storage, or tax charges. This is a dated announcement figure, not a permanent price guarantee; verify the current rate before launch.

Budget for more than active speaking time if your implementation keeps sessions open during silence. Set an idle timeout, show users when a session is active, and record billable duration so unexpected spend can be traced to a route, tenant, or client version.

Failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
Handshake returns unauthorized Missing, expired, or mis-scoped credential Check the server’s Bearer header or browser subprotocol; never expose the permanent key as a workaround.
Socket opens but no response Session configuration was not sent, used an obsolete event shape, or selected an invalid model Log sanitized event types, compare every field with the current reference, and verify the live model identifier.
Events arrive but playback is silent Codec, sample rate, channel count, or decoding path mismatch Inspect the negotiated format and test a known-good output path before changing prompts.
Words are cut off during barge-in Playback queue was not cleared or interruption signaling was delayed Stop local audio immediately, cancel the prior response as documented, and prioritize new input frames.
Duplicate actions after reconnect Two sockets or a retried tool call remained active Use one session owner, idempotency keys for side effects, and a bounded reconnect policy.
Costs rise during quiet periods Sessions remain open while nobody is speaking Implement idle timeouts, explicit hang-up controls, and per-user concurrency limits.

Launch checklist

  • Permanent credentials are server-only; browsers receive ephemeral secrets.
  • The endpoint, model identifier, event schema, and audio format match the current xAI documentation.
  • A single test can connect, capture speech, return audio, and play it audibly.
  • Interruption clears queued audio and does not duplicate tool calls.
  • Tools are allow-listed, validated, authorized, timed out, and idempotent where needed.
  • Reconnects, idle sessions, microphone denial, malformed audio, and provider errors have visible user states.
  • Latency, failures, usage duration, and privacy events are observable without logging secrets or unnecessary raw audio.
  • Published pricing and availability have been rechecked immediately before launch.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
