Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA useful real-time race-strategy dashboard is a timestamp-aware data system, not a single chart. Resolve the event and session first, ingest timing, car telemetry, pit, tyre-stint, race-control and weather streams independently, normalize them by session, driver and lap, then show each panel with its own update time and stale-data state. For a public Formula 1 project, OpenF1 documents free historical access from 2023 onward and subscription-gated real-time access; its feed is unofficial and is not the same thing as a team’s private telemetry system.
What the dashboard must do
Race strategy is a sequence of decisions made with incomplete, delayed and differently timed information. A dashboard should therefore answer five questions at a glance:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Where is each car, and what are its current gaps to nearby cars and the leader?
- Is its recent pace improving or falling, and is the comparison based on comparable laps or sectors?
- Which tyre compound is fitted, how old is the stint, and when did the last stop occur?
- How have pit-lane conditions, traffic, flags or a safety-car period changed the cost of stopping?
- Are weather and other inputs current, delayed, missing or estimated?
The answer to every panel should carry a timestamp. A value with no freshness indicator is easy to mistake for a live observation when it may be the last successful update from several minutes ago.
Choose live, historical or replay scope before writing code
Your data contract and operating cost depend on this decision. OpenF1 documents historical Formula 1 data from 2023 onward as available without authentication. Its real-time access requires a paid subscription, and the project describes itself as unofficial and unaffiliated with Formula 1 companies. That makes it practical for a historical dashboard, a replay mode or an appropriately licensed live application, but it does not make the feed an official team system.

A second option is T1API. Its current v2 API requires an API key and returns analysis as PNG, JSON or CSV, including race strategy, tyre degradation, tyre-stint usage, race gaps, pace and telemetry plots. Its FastF1-based v1 predecessor is documented as deprecated and scheduled for retirement on 1 September 2027. Treat routes, limits, pricing and that retirement date as service details to verify before deployment.
| Use case | Suitable starting point | Access and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Historical analysis from 2023 onward | OpenF1 historical endpoints | Documented as free and unauthenticated; confirm current coverage and field definitions. |
| Live public dashboard | OpenF1 real-time tier | Documented as subscription-gated; endpoint cadence and fields can change. |
| Precomputed strategy or pace visualizations | T1API v2 | Requires a key; confirm current routes and usage limits. |
| Legacy T1API integration | T1API v1 | Deprecated and scheduled for retirement on 2027-09-01; do not make it a new dependency. |
Do not describe a fan-facing API as the telemetry available to a team. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile’s 2026 Formula 1 Regulations: Technical Regulations, Section C, Issue 15, dated 10 December 2025, states: “The F1 Teams should transfer the real−time Telemetry data and events on the FIA network as requested by, and in the format defined by, the FIA.” That regulated team-to-FIA network is a different system from a public data service.
Design the architecture around independent streams
Do not wait for a perfectly synchronized “race frame.” The documented endpoints have different rhythms. OpenF1 describes car data at about 3.7 Hz, race interval updates at approximately four-second intervals and weather updates every minute. These are endpoint-specific documentation statements, not a guarantee that every record arrives on schedule or that streams share a clock.
| Stream | What it contributes | Typical documented cadence or event behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Car data | Speed, throttle, brake, gear, RPM and other sampled telemetry fields | About 3.7 Hz in OpenF1 documentation. |
| Laps and sectors | Lap number, sector times, lap duration and completion state | Event-driven; retain the source timestamp. |
| Intervals and position | Gap to the car ahead or leader, running order and position changes | Intervals approximately every four seconds, according to the documentation. |
| Pits and stints | Pit entry or stop information, compound and stint age | Event-driven; late corrections must be accepted. |
| Race control | Flags, safety-car notices, penalties and other official messages | Event-driven and potentially irregular. |
| Weather | Track and air conditions available from the service | Every minute in OpenF1 documentation. |
A practical deployment has four layers:
- Collectors request or subscribe to one endpoint at a time and write the raw response immediately.
- Normalizer converts source field names and units into a stable internal schema while retaining the original payload.
- Strategy service computes gaps, trends, pit-window scenarios and forecasts from the normalized records.
- Presentation layer renders panels, timestamps, confidence labels and stale states without hiding missing data.
For a first version, a relational database with time-indexed tables is easier to audit than an in-memory-only design. Keep raw JSON or CSV rows beside normalized rows so that a parser change does not destroy the evidence used to calculate a displayed value.
Resolve the meeting and session before collecting telemetry
Practice, qualifying, sprint and race records can use the same driver numbers while representing entirely different timelines. Every stored row should therefore include an event or meeting key and a session key. OpenF1’s endpoint conventions use meeting and session keys; use those identifiers rather than a display name such as “Monaco.”

- Fetch the meeting list or configure the intended meeting identifier.
- Fetch the sessions belonging to that meeting.
- Select the exact session type and start time, then persist its session key.
- Pass that key to every subsequent timing, telemetry, pit, stint, race-control and weather request.
- Reject or quarantine records whose session key does not match the active dashboard session.
At the start of a live session, display the resolved meeting name, session type, scheduled date and source status. This prevents a dashboard from silently showing qualifying data while its header says “Race.”
Ingest each source with an explicit timestamp contract
For every incoming record, retain at least the following fields:

| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
source_timestamp |
When the provider says the observation occurred. |
ingested_at |
When your collector received and stored it. |
meeting_key and session_key |
Prevent cross-session mixing. |
driver_number |

source_record_id |
Optional de-duplication key when provided by the service. |

Original fields for audit, replay and parser recovery. |
Store records append-only first. A separate “current state” view can select the latest valid observation per driver and stream. This handles delayed delivery, duplicate messages and corrections without rewriting history.

The exact database is your implementation choice; the important properties are session isolation, source time, ingestion time and raw-field retention.

Every panel should show “updated” time and a state such as live, delayed, stale or unavailable. Set thresholds per stream rather than using one global timeout. A four-second interval feed can be considered stale much sooner than a one-minute weather feed.
- Live: the newest source timestamp is within the stream’s expected interval.
- Delayed: data exists, but arrival or source age exceeds the normal interval.
- Stale: no new record has arrived beyond a defined safety multiple of the expected interval.
- Unavailable: the source has not produced a usable value for this session or the request failed.
Keep unknown distinct from zero. A null interval, missing tyre compound or unavailable pit duration must not become “0.0.” Preserve lapped or null values as represented by the source, and show the last known value only with its age. If a collector disconnects, freeze the panel with a warning rather than silently making an old value look current.
Calculate the comparisons a strategist actually needs
The dashboard should combine observations into context rather than display isolated telemetry traces.
| Panel | Observed inputs | Reader-facing result |
|---|---|---|
| Race order | Position, interval, leader gap and timestamp | Current order with nearby-car gaps and their ages. |
| Pace trend | Completed lap or sector times, lap validity and stint context | Recent pace window compared with a stated baseline. |
| Pit event | Pit records and timing around entry, stop and exit | Observed pit duration where available, not an invented value. |
| Tyre stint | Compound, start lap and current lap | Compound plus stint age, with unknowns preserved. |
| Race state | Race-control messages and flags | Current control condition and the time it became effective. |
| Weather | Latest weather record and source timestamp | Conditions with a separate weather freshness indicator. |
For a pace trend, state the window explicitly—for example, the last three completed valid laps—and exclude laps affected by a pit stop or a red flag. If fewer than the required laps are available, display “insufficient samples” instead of manufacturing a trend.

Make pit-window recommendations explainable
A pit-window card should compare scenarios, not issue an opaque command. For each candidate stop lap, show:
- Projected stop lap and the lap range considered.
- Current position, gap to the car ahead and traffic expected after the stop.
- Observed pit-lane or stop duration when the source provides it.
- Current compound and stint age, plus the degradation assumption used for the projection.
- Race-control condition, including any safety-car or flag state that changes pit loss.
- Weather observation and timestamp.
- Output class: observed, calculated estimate or model forecast.
A transparent calculation might estimate total race time as completed race time plus projected remaining lap time, pit loss, traffic penalty and tyre-performance adjustment. Those terms are engineering assumptions, not official Formula 1 formulas. Display their values and source timestamps beside the result so a reader can challenge the assumptions.
Use relative comparisons such as “stop one lap earlier” versus “stay out two laps,” rather than claiming certainty. A recommendation should disappear or downgrade to “insufficient data” when the required gap, tyre or race-state input is missing.

| Class | Example | How to display it |
|---|---|---|
| Observed | Source-reported interval, speed sample, compound or race-control message | Show source timestamp and provider name. |
| Calculated | Gap trend, stint age, average of the last valid laps or observed pit duration | Show formula, sample count and input age. |
| Forecast | Projected degradation, future pit loss or likely finish time | Show assumptions, horizon and confidence or uncertainty range. |
A 2025 study of tyre-energy prediction used historical telemetry from Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 and explored explainability. That setup does not demonstrate that a public API carries the same private inputs, nor that its model can be reproduced from public signals. If you train a model, document its training data, feature availability, validation period and failure conditions; otherwise label the result as a heuristic estimate.
Best Value
Implement a resilient collector
Collectors should be independently restartable. A failure in weather must not stop timing, and a delayed pit record must not block car telemetry.
- Load the active meeting and session keys from configuration.
- Start one worker per stream, each with its own retry and backoff policy.
- Write the raw response before transforming it.
- Validate required identifiers and source timestamps; quarantine malformed rows.
- Deduplicate by the provider’s record identity or a deterministic composite key.
- Update a per-stream health record containing last success, last source timestamp, error count and retry time.
- Publish normalized updates to the strategy service and dashboard.
for stream in streams:
while session_is_active():
try:
records = client.fetch(stream, session_key)
for record in records:
raw_store.write(record)
normalized = normalize(stream, record)
if normalized.is_valid:
state_store.upsert(normalized)
health.mark_success(stream, newest_timestamp(records))
except TemporaryError as error:
health.mark_failure(stream, str(error))
sleep(backoff(stream))
Use a replay mode that reads stored raw records in source-time order. Replay lets you test joins, stale-state transitions, pit-window cards and race-control interruptions without waiting for a live event.
Design the user interface for fast decisions
A compact layout works better than a wall of telemetry:
- Header: meeting, session, session clock, source status and last global ingestion time.
- Race table: position, driver, interval, leader gap, last valid lap, compound, stint age and each row’s freshest timestamp.
- Driver detail: recent pace, sector status, sampled car data and pit history.
- Strategy comparison: candidate stop laps in columns, with assumptions and traffic consequences visible.
- Race-control strip: latest flag or message, effective time and impact on calculations.
- Weather card: current values, weather timestamp and the separate weather freshness state.
Use color as a supplement, not the only status signal. Pair red or amber indicators with text such as “stale, 38 s old” or “forecast, based on 4 valid laps.” On mobile, allow the race table to scroll horizontally while keeping driver and position columns fixed.
Validate the dashboard before calling it live
- Replay a session containing pit stops, a safety-car period, missing records and at least one late correction.
- Confirm that practice, qualifying, sprint and race rows cannot join across session keys.
- Disconnect one collector and verify that only its panels become stale.
- Inject duplicate and out-of-order records and check that the current-state view remains correct.
- Compare displayed timestamps with source timestamps, not just browser receipt time.
- Check that null, lapped and unavailable values remain distinct from zero.
- Verify that a pit recommendation lists its assumptions and downgrades when an input is missing.
- Run schema validation at the start of every season and alert on unknown or removed fields.
OpenF1 notes that some fields are marked for future removal, and T1API documents version deprecation. Pin a tested schema, keep an adapter per provider version and make a schema change fail loudly in staging instead of silently corrupting race calculations.
Know the limits of public telemetry
The FIA’s regulated telemetry requirement and a public API serve different audiences and contain different information. Public feeds may omit private setup channels, team targets, encrypted or restricted signals, and the internal decision context used by a race engineer. Do not market a public dashboard as a team’s live telemetry system.
Likewise, a feed’s documented cadence does not guarantee delivery on every interval. Network delay, provider maintenance, rate limits and corrections can all change what the viewer sees. Preserve provenance and communicate uncertainty; those features are more valuable than a superficially smooth animation.

Operational checklist
- Choose historical/replay or licensed live scope.
- Confirm access terms, current endpoint schema and session coverage for the chosen provider.
- Resolve meeting and session identifiers before subscribing to streams.
- Store raw records with source and ingestion timestamps.
- Normalize by session, driver and lap without forcing a common cadence.
- Display separate freshness states for car data, intervals, weather and event streams.
- Mark every value as observed, calculated or forecast.
- Expose pit-window assumptions, traffic context, tyre degradation assumptions and race-control effects.
- Use replay tests for delayed, missing, duplicated and out-of-order records.
- Pin schemas and monitor provider version changes before each season.
