Start with a book you genuinely want to read, set aside a small slot that fits your day, and try reading in company if that sounds more appealing than doing it alone. There is no established best routine for people who would rather socialize; the aim is to find a version that fits your life.
Choose a book that already interests you
Do not begin with a book you think you ought to read. Pick something connected to an existing interest, a favorite show or film, or a conversation you enjoyed. Ask friends for recommendations, or browse with help from a bookseller, library staff member, or an online reading community.

If a book feels like a slog, put it aside and try another. Pleasure reading is not a test of willpower, and changing books is a reasonable way to find what holds your attention.
Make the first reading slot small and specific
Choose a time that already has a place in your day, such as lunch or the period before bed, and attach reading to it. Attention researcher Gloria Mark of the University of California, Irvine, advises readers to “start by scheduling reading into your day,” as reported by The Associated Press.

The AP article offers five pages at lunch or before bed as examples, not as a scientifically established ideal. Treat that as a starting point, not a quota: shorten, lengthen, or move the session if it does not fit. A specific, manageable appointment is easier to try than waiting for a long stretch of free time to appear.
Let reading fit the way you spend your day
The best format may depend on where you are and what else you are doing. A print book can suit an at-home break; an e-book is portable; an audiobook can fit a commute or chores. The AP reports that library access to e-books and audiobooks may be available through Libby with a library card, but catalogs and access vary by library, so check your local library’s current options and the app’s terms.

Reading does not have to mean being alone. A silent book club brings people together in a shared space to read their own books, often with time to socialize around the reading. You could also read beside a friend, exchange recommendations, or invite someone to a low-key reading session at a café or library.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis by Zhao and Li in Frontiers in Education covered 37 publications and 15,434 participants in university-library reading studies across 10 countries and three continents. It reported positive associations between reading intention, attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms. In everyday terms, wanting to read, expecting it to be worthwhile, feeling able to fit it in, and sensing that people around you value it can all be relevant.

That evidence is not a formula for building this particular habit: many of the underlying studies were cross-sectional, so they cannot establish what causes what, and the review concerns university library settings rather than adults who prefer socializing. A separate 2026 study of 487 older adults in eastern China found motivation associated with library use through reading self-efficacy; its findings should not automatically be applied to other ages or regions. These studies offer context, not a guarantee that a club, schedule, or app will make a habit stick.

Try a low-pressure routine, then adjust it
- Pick one appealing book. Choose a subject, story, or format you are curious about.
- Choose one existing cue. Try lunch, bedtime, a commute, or another reliable part of the day.
- Set a small first session. A few pages or a short stretch of listening is enough to test whether the plan fits; there is no required daily target.
- Add company if you want it. Suggest reading alongside a friend or look for a silent book club, without making attendance a commitment.
- Review the experience, not your discipline. If the time, format, or book is not enjoyable, change it and try again.
