How to Build a Poker Coaching Business Alongside Playing

You can coach poker without abandoning your own game by treating coaching as a small service business with a defined student, a narrow first offer, protected playing hours, and a simple measurement system. Start with one or two formats—such as private lessons and hand reviews—then document preparation time, client demand, repeat bookings, cancellations, and effective hourly revenue before expanding.

What a player-coach business actually is

A player-coach business combines two different jobs. Playing produces variable results governed by bankroll, game selection and variance. Coaching produces service revenue governed by your teaching offer, available hours and client retention. Keeping those activities separate in your calendar and records makes it easier to see whether coaching is helping your overall finances or quietly reducing study, rest or playing quality.

Your first version does not need a large course library, a polished studio or a full-time schedule. It needs a clearly defined promise to a clearly defined type of player. A useful promise describes a change the student can observe, such as building a preflop process for six-max cash games, reviewing tournament decisions with a consistent framework, or learning to turn marked hands into a repeatable study routine.

Existing poker education businesses show that expertise can be packaged in several ways. PokerCoaching lists courses, classes, quizzes, live coaching webinars and Q&A, hand reviews, study plans and community access on its main site: https://pokercoaching.com/. Its pricing page separates a coaching-oriented membership from solver training and a combined subscription: https://next.pokercoaching.com/pricing/. Those are examples of product packaging, not evidence that a particular format will produce a specific income for an individual coach.

Choose the student and problem before choosing a platform

“I coach poker” is too broad to guide your lesson plans or attract a first client. Write one sentence that names the player, the game and the problem you can credibly address:

I help [specific player] improve [specific decision or process] in [specific format and stakes] so they can [observable outcome].

Keep the scope narrow enough that you can prepare examples from your own experience and explain what is outside the service.

Cash-game coaching

A cash-game specialist might focus on six-max no-limit hold’em, low-stakes online players, live full-ring players or a particular leak such as defending blinds. The examples, database review and drills should match that environment. Do not imply that advice for one format automatically transfers to tournaments, short-handed final tables or mixed games.

Tournament coaching

Tournament students may need help with stack-size decisions, payout pressure, satellite strategy or final-table preparation. State whether your service covers early-stage play, late-stage play, a specific buy-in range or live events. If you do not teach ICM, satellites or live logistics, say so rather than accepting a vague “tournament strategy” brief.

Beginner and intermediate players

Newer players often need a process: hand notation, range construction, bet-size logic and a study routine. More experienced players may need diagnosis of recurring leaks, review of database filters or targeted work on a narrow node. Choose the level at which your explanations are strongest; a winning record at high stakes does not by itself prove that you can teach a beginner clearly.

Define an outcome you can observe

Outcomes should describe behavior or decision quality, not a guaranteed win rate. Examples include “the student can produce a preflop range chart and explain the assumptions,” “the student submits five hands with relevant context before each review,” or “the student follows a written river-checking process for a month.” Avoid promising a return, a particular win rate or a fixed number of profit dollars.

Start with one or two services

Each additional format creates preparation, delivery and support work. Test a small offer before building a large curriculum. The formats below are documented examples in the poker-training market; the workload and results for your business will depend on your audience and operating choices.

Format What the student receives Delivery Capacity and preparation considerations Evidence of comparative results
One-to-one lesson A live diagnosis, explanation and action plan Synchronous video or voice session One student at a time; preparation is usually tied to the student’s stated goals and submitted material Not stated by the cited providers
Hand review Written, recorded or live analysis of marked hands Asynchronous, synchronous or a combination Can be batched; quality depends on complete hand histories and useful written feedback Not stated
Structured course Sequenced lessons, examples and exercises Mostly asynchronous Requires substantial curriculum creation before sale; can serve more students at once after production Not stated
Quiz or drill pack Decision prompts with explanations or answer keys Asynchronous Efficient for repeated practice, but questions must match the student’s format and level Not stated
Webinar or group class Live teaching plus questions, replay or notes if offered Synchronous group delivery Serves several students at once; requires scheduling, moderation and a clear lesson plan Not stated
Community or study group Ongoing discussion, office hours, study plans or peer review Asynchronous with optional live sessions Recurring moderation and boundaries are essential; support can expand beyond the advertised time Not stated

A practical starting combination is one live service and one asynchronous service. For example, offer a 60-minute diagnostic lesson and a fixed-scope hand-review package. The live session reveals common questions; the review package lets you assess how much written analysis time each hand requires.

Make the deliverable unambiguous

Before accepting payment, write down what happens before, during and after the engagement. This is operating guidance rather than a tested industry formula, but it prevents the most common scope disputes.

Specify the session or package

  • State the duration and whether the clock includes technical setup.
  • List the game format, stakes or tournament range covered.
  • Say whether the student supplies hand histories, screenshots, database filters or questions in advance.
  • Set a submission deadline and a maximum number of hands or files.
  • Describe the delivery method: video call, voice, written notes, recorded screen share or a combination.
  • Explain what follow-up is included, such as a short action plan, replay access or one clarification message.
  • Publish a rescheduling and cancellation rule before the first booking.

A concise offer might read: “A 60-minute six-max cash-game review of up to five hands submitted 24 hours in advance, followed by a one-page study plan and one clarification email within seven days.” The exact length, hand count and follow-up are your choices; the important feature is that a client can understand the boundary without a sales call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an intake form

Ask for the student’s format, stakes or buy-in range, experience, goals, recent study, software exports and three questions they most want answered. Request anonymized hands when possible. An intake form reduces time spent discovering basic context during a paid session and gives you a record against which to assess progress.

Separate teaching from financial advice

Do not tell a student that your coaching will make them profitable or that a specific bankroll guarantees safety. Explain strategic concepts, decision processes and study methods. If a student asks for individualized tax, legal or mental-health advice, refer them to a qualified professional.

How do I coach poker while still playing?

There is no evidence-based universal split between playing and coaching hours. Build a provisional calendar, run it for several weeks and compare the plan with your actual hours, energy and revenue. A calendar that looks profitable on paper can fail if preparation expands into your best playing sessions or recovery time.

Create recurring blocks

Reserve separate blocks for:

  • Playing: sessions selected for your game, bankroll and mental state.
  • Coaching delivery: live lessons, group classes and office hours.
  • Preparation and follow-up: reviewing hands, writing notes and updating study plans.
  • Administration: scheduling, invoices, intake forms, refunds and record keeping.
  • Personal study: your own review and practice.
  • Recovery: sleep, exercise and unstructured time after demanding sessions.

Keep coaching appointments away from the hours in which you usually play your best games, unless you have deliberately chosen that trade-off. Set a maximum number of consecutive teaching sessions; explaining difficult spots for several hours can reduce the quality of your own decisions later.

Track actual time, not just booked time

For each client, record delivery minutes, preparation, follow-up, administration and cancellations. After several weeks, calculate effective hourly revenue as total coaching receipts divided by all coaching-related hours. Compare that figure with the value you assign to a playing hour, while recognizing that playing results are volatile and should not be treated as a guaranteed wage.

If coaching demand rises, change one variable at a time: fewer playing sessions, a higher price for new bookings, a tighter package, or a group format. Do not expand availability merely because your calendar has empty spaces; protect the conditions that keep your playing and teaching competent.

How do I get my first poker coaching clients?

No dependable source establishes a standard acquisition funnel, conversion rate or client-acquisition cost for poker coaches. Your first clients are most likely to come from people who already understand your game and communication style, provided you approach them without making performance promises.

Start with warm, relevant contacts

Tell former study partners, trusted opponents, local club members and poker communities exactly whom you help and what the first package includes. Ask for an introduction, not a public endorsement of unverified results. Respect site rules and never reveal another player’s hand history or identity without permission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Publish useful demonstrations

Short, self-contained examples can show how you think: annotate a fabricated hand, explain a range assumption, or demonstrate a preflop quiz. Remove identifying details from real hands and disclose when a spot is simplified. The purpose is to let a potential student judge whether your explanations are clear, not to prove that one decision caused a profit.

Offer a bounded pilot

Invite a small number of suitable students to a clearly defined pilot with a written scope and a normal payment process. In exchange for a lower introductory price, you may request permission to use anonymized feedback about clarity and organization. Do not call a pilot “guaranteed improvement,” and do not continue discounting indefinitely.

Build referrals into the service

At the end of a completed package, ask whether the student knows someone with the same problem. A referral request works best when the student can forward a one-paragraph description of the format, prerequisites and booking process. Keep a simple record of where each inquiry came from so you can see which channels produce suitable clients rather than merely more messages.

What should I charge for poker coaching?

The available sources do not establish a typical market rate, a reliable hourly average or an expected income for a player-coach. Do not copy a headline price from another service and assume it fits your experience, audience or preparation burden.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a defensible floor

Estimate the hours required for delivery, preparation, follow-up, administration and expected cancellations. Choose the minimum effective hourly revenue that makes the work worthwhile, then calculate a package price:

package price = target effective hourly rate × expected total hours

If your estimate is uncertain, use a range and review it after a small number of completed packages. Your target should account for taxes, payment processing, software, refunds and unpaid marketing time. It should not depend on a promise that the student will win money.

Use simple tiers

A narrow menu is easier to explain than many options. For example, you might offer a single diagnostic lesson, a multi-session package with a written study plan, and a fixed-scope hand-review package. Define what changes between tiers—access, turnaround time, number of hands or follow-up—not vague claims of “premium strategy.” Keep the same cancellation and confidentiality rules across tiers unless you state an exception.

Review prices with evidence

After each month or after a defined number of bookings, review inquiry-to-booking rate, repeat bookings, preparation time, cancellation rate and effective hourly revenue. If clients repeatedly need more support than the package includes, narrow the scope or raise the price for new clients. If inquiries are plentiful but unsuitable, revise the student definition and examples before cutting the price.

Use study tools as aids, not as a substitute for coaching

Solver and trainer products can help you prepare examples or practice decision-making, but owning software does not establish teaching ability. Choose tools according to the game format, stakes and lesson objective, and explain assumptions when you show a result.

GTO Wizard’s trainer documentation describes configurable practice from preflop through river and drills focused on particular situations: https://help.gtowizard.com/how-to-use-the-trainer/. PokerCoaching describes its PeakGTO product as a solver-backed study and drill tool, alongside its coaching content: https://pokercoaching.com/. These pages document features and product positioning, not independent proof that a tool improves every student’s results.

Prepare a tool-assisted lesson

  1. Define the decision and assumptions first: positions, stack depth, rake, tournament stage or other relevant conditions.
  2. Choose one or two representative spots instead of flooding the student with every solver line.
  3. Ask the student to explain a preferred action before showing a solution.
  4. Discuss why a strategy changes when assumptions change.
  5. End with a human action: a range card, a drill set, a marking rule or a review schedule.

If your tool does not model the student’s exact environment, label the output as an approximation. Client-specific context and communication remain your responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect your playing bankroll and runway

Coaching revenue should not be used to conceal an underfunded playing bankroll. Keep a separate view of living expenses, coaching cash flow and poker funds so a downswing does not force you to accept unsuitable clients or play games you cannot afford.

Jonathan Little wrote in a 2019 CardPlayer article: “In my opinion, it is short-sighted to try to become a professional poker player without at least a year’s worth of living expenses set aside and a nice bankroll of at least 5,000 big blinds for no-limit hold’em cash games or 100 buy-ins for tournaments.” The article is available at https://media.cardplayer.com/assets/magazines/000/066/437/pdf/33_12_web.pdf. This is Little’s opinion about becoming a professional player, not a validated threshold for starting a coaching business or a universal bankroll rule.

Decide in advance how coaching receipts are allocated: living costs, taxes, business expenses, playing bankroll and reserves. Revisit the policy only at scheduled reviews rather than after a winning or losing session.

Keep tax and business records from the first payment

For U.S. readers, the Internal Revenue Service’s Publication 17 (2025), Your Federal Income Tax, discusses gambling winnings, withholding and the use of Schedule C when a person is in the trade or business of gambling: https://www.irs.gov/publications/p17. IRS Topic 419 explains reporting obligations for casual gamblers and notes that estimated tax may be required: https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc419?mf_ct_campaign=aol-synd-feed. Poker winnings and coaching fees can involve different reporting details. The sources above do not determine your state treatment, business structure, deductible expenses or filing position. Keep coaching receipts and expenses separate from playing records, save invoices and payment statements, and ask a qualified tax professional about the rules for your jurisdiction and tax year. This is general information, not individualized tax advice.

Measure whether the arrangement is working

A small dashboard can show whether coaching is a sustainable complement to playing. Review it on a fixed cadence, such as monthly, rather than changing your plan after every session.

  • Demand: qualified inquiries, source of inquiry and booking rate.
  • Delivery: sessions completed, hands reviewed, group attendance and turnaround time.
  • Retention: repeat bookings, package completion and referrals.
  • Reliability: cancellations, reschedules, late submissions and refunds.
  • Economics: receipts, expenses, payment fees and effective hourly revenue after all coaching time.
  • Playing impact: planned versus actual playing hours, study hours, rest and any self-identified decision-quality problems after teaching.
  • Teaching quality: specific student feedback about clarity, usefulness and whether the agreed deliverable arrived on time.

These measures are an operating system, not a guarantee of success. A high booking rate with excessive preparation may be worse than fewer, well-scoped clients. A profitable month may also be temporary if it depends on one client or a short-lived playing schedule.

A 30-day launch sequence

Days 1–7: define the offer

  1. Choose one student segment and one problem you can demonstrate credibly.
  2. Select one live and, if useful, one asynchronous format.
  3. Write the scope, prerequisites, hand limit, turnaround, follow-up and cancellation rule.
  4. Create an intake form and a basic payment and scheduling process.

Days 8–14: prepare delivery

  1. Build one lesson outline and a small set of anonymized examples.
  2. Test your screen-sharing, recording, file-transfer and confidentiality workflow.
  3. Block playing, coaching, preparation, administration and recovery time on your calendar.
  4. Set up a spreadsheet to record every coaching minute and expense.

Days 15–21: run a bounded pilot

  1. Contact a small number of suitable prospects with the exact offer.
  2. Deliver the package as written and record actual preparation and follow-up time.
  3. Ask for specific feedback about clarity, scope and usefulness.
  4. Note questions that belong in the intake form or lesson materials.

Days 22–30: review and adjust

  1. Calculate effective hourly revenue and compare it with your target.
  2. Check whether coaching displaced planned playing, study or recovery.
  3. Identify repeated requests that should become a lesson, quiz or hand-review template.
  4. Keep, narrow, reprice or pause the offer based on the evidence you collected.

Common failure modes and fixes

Trying to teach everyone

Symptom: every inquiry requires a different curriculum. Fix: publish the game, level and problem you serve; refer out requests outside that scope.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Underpricing because only the call is visible

Symptom: a 60-minute session consumes several hours. Fix: measure preparation and follow-up, then limit submissions or change the package price for new clients.

Letting support become unlimited

Symptom: messages and extra hand reviews fill playing blocks. Fix: define response windows, included questions and an additional-session process.

Using solver output as the lesson

Symptom: students receive charts without understanding assumptions. Fix: ask for their reasoning first, explain the model’s limits and connect the spot to a repeatable decision process.

Mixing poker and coaching finances

Symptom: you cannot tell whether a month was profitable or whether taxes are reserved. Fix: maintain separate categories and reconcile receipts, expenses and transfers monthly.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Playing through exhaustion

Symptom: teaching, playing and administration run together, followed by poor decisions. Fix: impose maximum consecutive blocks, schedule recovery and reduce availability before quality falls.

When to expand beyond private work

Expand only after your first offer is repeatable. A course, quiz library, webinar or community can serve more students at once, but it also requires curriculum maintenance, technical support and clearer quality control. Convert recurring explanations from completed lessons into reusable material, then test a small module before recording a large catalog.

Group teaching can improve the relationship between preparation time and the number of students served, but it introduces scheduling and moderation demands. Community access creates recurring obligations; publish office-hour times, response expectations and acceptable conduct. Expansion should follow measured demand and available recovery time, not the assumption that more products automatically mean more income.
