Build your Pokémon TCG Prerelease deck from the cards you actually opened: choose a workable plan, consider the promo only if your pool supports it, and finish with exactly 40 cards. Prerelease games use four Prize cards, and the organizer’s supplied Basic Energy can help you make the deck playable.
What comes in a Build & Battle Box?
Contents depend on the expansion and product edition. For example, the official Mega Evolution—Pitch Black Build & Battle Box includes four expansion booster packs, a 40-card ready-to-play deck, and one of four possible foil promo cards. General kit guidance also lists a deck-building tip sheet. Check the product description for the specific expansion you are attending.

Use the ready-to-play deck and cards from your booster packs as the pool for construction. The included promo is an option within that pool—not an automatic centerpiece. Its value depends on whether the other Pokémon, Trainer cards, and available Energy let you use it effectively.
How to build your 40-card deck
1. Sort the cards you received
Separate Pokémon, Trainer cards, and Energy. Look across both the ready-to-play deck and booster pulls for attackers, Pokémon that support them, and Trainer cards that help your plan function. Build from what is present rather than assuming every kit contains the same useful cards.

2. Decide whether the promo fits
Check the promo’s attack costs, effects, and any conditions against the rest of your pool. Include it when the Pokémon and Energy available make its role practical. If it does not fit the cards you opened, choose another plan; the promo’s presence alone does not make it the best attacker.
3. Choose a plan your pool can support
Identify one or more attackers you can realistically power, then retain the supporting Pokémon and Trainer cards that help those attackers do their jobs. Keep your Energy choices aligned with the attacks you intend to use. There is no single official card-count recipe for every pool: the workable balance depends on the cards in your particular box and packs.

5. Adjust the Energy and count the deck
Ask the event organizer for the Basic Energy available to players. Current Play! Pokémon event guidance allows players to modify their deck with additional Basic Energy, and the handbook describes organizer-provided Basic Energy for Sealed construction. Finish by counting the entire deck: Limited decks must contain exactly 40 cards.
Rules to keep in mind during deck building
- Four Prize cards: Prerelease games use four Prize cards, not the usual six.
- No general four-copy limit: Limited construction does not impose the usual general same-name copy limit; follow any restriction printed on a card itself.
- Follow the event’s timing: Current Play! Pokémon prerelease guidance allows about 20–30 minutes for deck building. The handbook’s Sealed section says 30 minutes, so use the organizer’s instructions for your event.
- Ask about supplies: The organizer can confirm which Basic Energy is available and clarify event-specific instructions.
These Sealed rules are covered in the Play! Pokémon tournament rules and resources.

Why the best promo deck depends on the pool
Build & Battle products and promo options vary, and the booster cards you receive also shape what is viable. That is why an exact promo-by-promo list cannot be chosen without knowing the expansion and the cards opened. Use the promo when the pool supports its costs and effects; otherwise, build around the strongest feasible plan in your own cards.
