How to Build a Pitch Deck for an Accelerator Application

Build a concise, self-explanatory leave-behind: explain what you are making, whose urgent problem it solves, what evidence you have, why your team can win, and what the accelerator would help you achieve next. A practical accelerator deck is usually 10–15 slides, with detailed calculations and supporting material moved to an appendix. Tailor the file and any required videos to the target program’s current application form rather than submitting a generic investor presentation.

What an accelerator reviewer needs to understand

A reviewer may open your PDF without you present. The deck therefore has to make the company legible in a few minutes and still reward a closer read. Every slide should answer one decision-relevant question, and its title should state the conclusion rather than name the topic. Put the proof directly below that conclusion.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Y Combinator’s official application guidance captures the tone: “The best answers are the most matter of fact.” It also warns that “Every unnecessary word in your application subtracts from the effect of the necessary ones.” Apply that standard to the deck: use plain language, specific numbers with dates and definitions, and no claims that depend on a live explanation.

  • Clarity: A person outside your niche can repeat what the company does after seeing the first two slides.
  • Evidence: Each important assertion is tied to an observed result, a named assumption, or a clearly labeled plan.
  • Progress: The sequence shows what you have learned, what remains uncertain, and the next measurable milestone.
  • Fit: The requested program can see why its mentors, network, geography, or resources match your next step.

How many slides should an accelerator deck have?

Use 10–15 slides as a starting range, excluding an appendix. Y Combinator’s 2025 Guide to Seed describes that range for a coherent leave-behind, not as a universal rule for every accelerator. A program may set a different limit or ask for a shorter file, so the application form always wins.

Deck element Recommended treatment Where detail belongs
Main narrative 10–15 slides with one claim per slide Only evidence needed to understand and evaluate that claim
Appendix Optional supporting slides Calculations, research notes, cohort tables, technical architecture, and definitions
File format Stable PDF when an upload is requested Keep the editable source for updates, but submit the tested export

Do not stretch a five-slide story to reach 15 slides. Conversely, do not compress essential proof into unreadable charts to meet an arbitrary preference. If the program publishes a hard slide limit, count the appendix exactly as instructed.

A practical 12-slide structure

The following order covers the questions common accelerator forms ask. Combine or split slides only when the resulting claim remains easy to scan.

Slide Purpose Minimum content
1. Company and one-line description Orient the reviewer immediately What you make, for whom, and the immediate problem addressed
2. Problem Show why the problem deserves a solution Specific customer, painful or costly workflow, and current consequence
3. Solution and product Make the proposed change tangible Product view, workflow, prototype, or short demo frame
4. Why now Explain timing Technology, regulation, market, or behavior change with dated evidence
5. Initial customer and market Define the beachhead Who buys first and how market size is calculated; label assumptions
6. Traction or validation Show what has been tested Users, pilots, retention, revenue, usage, waitlist, interviews, or experiments
7. Business model Explain how money changes hands Payer, pricing logic, sales motion, and path to scalable acquisition
8. Competition and advantage Make alternatives and defensibility explicit What customers use now and your durable edge
9. Team Establish founder–problem fit Relevant experience, role ownership, and missing capabilities
10. Milestones Show the next proof points Measurable goals, dates or sequence, and dependencies
11. Accelerator fit and ask Explain why this program, now Specific help requested and the milestone it unlocks
12. Contact or closing proof Leave a usable final reference Contact details and one evidence-based reminder; omit a slogan-only finale

If the form does not ask for an explicit funding request, do not force one into the deck. State the operational help you need instead: customer introductions, technical expertise, regulatory guidance, hiring, or a pilot channel.

How to write each slide

1. Company and one-line description

Write one sentence with a concrete object and customer: “We make [product] for [specific customer] so they can [measurable outcome].” Avoid category labels that require interpretation, such as “the future of work.” The first slide should also show the company name, URL or contact requested by the program, application stage, and the date of the metrics used later.

Test the sentence on someone unfamiliar with the industry. If they cannot tell who pays or what changes for the user, revise before designing the slide.

2. Problem

Describe the painful, frequent, or expensive event in the customer’s own workflow. Name who experiences it, how they solve it today, and the cost of that workaround. A short customer quote can help when you have permission and can identify its context; a collection of vague complaints is not evidence.

Separate the problem from your proposed feature. “Teams lose four hours reconciling reports each week” is a problem statement; “an AI dashboard” is a solution label. If the problem affects several segments, identify the first segment and explain why it is easiest to serve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Solution and product

Show the product doing the job. Use a screenshot sequence, annotated prototype, workflow diagram, or a still from a short demonstration. Label what is live, in pilot, mocked up, or planned. A reviewer should understand the first user action, the value-producing step, and the resulting output without hearing a narration.

Do not fill the slide with every feature. One end-to-end use case is more persuasive than a feature grid. Put technical architecture, edge cases, and secondary workflows in the appendix unless they are central to the buying decision.

4. Why now

Connect timing to a change that makes adoption newly practical or urgent: a platform capability, a regulatory deadline, a cost curve, a distribution shift, or a behavior change. Use dates and identify whether the point is an observed fact or your assumption. “The market is huge” is not a timing argument.

Explain why the company could not have achieved the same result as easily several years earlier, and why the window will remain open long enough to build a business. If timing depends on a proposed rule or unannounced platform change, label that uncertainty plainly.

5. Target customer and market

Start with the initial customer, not a top-down industry label. Specify the buyer, end user, trigger event, geography or segment, and route to reach them. Then show the market-sizing logic. A bottom-up calculation—number of reachable customers multiplied by realistic annual spend—is easier to audit than an unsupported percentage of a giant industry.

Mark every assumption: customer count, price, adoption rate, expansion, and period. Keep total addressable market, serviceable market, and your first beachhead distinct. A small initial segment can be a strength when it has a clear pain and repeatable distribution.

6. Traction or validation

Use the strongest evidence you actually possess and define it precisely. Every metric needs a period, customer segment, unit, and source. “1,200 users” is incomplete; “1,200 registered users as of September 2026, of whom 310 used the core workflow in the last 30 days” can be evaluated.

Stage Useful evidence How to present it honestly
Idea or pre-product Problem interviews, design-partner commitments, experiments, or waitlist State sample size, selection method, date, and what changed because of the learning
Prototype or pilot Active users, pilot completion, task success, repeat use, or letters of intent Separate signed commitments from usage and explain pilot duration
Early revenue Paid customers, recurring revenue, conversion, retention, expansion, or usage Define gross versus net revenue, cohort period, and whether a figure is recurring or one-time
Growth stage Growth rate, payback, retention cohorts, margins, and repeatable acquisition Show the denominator and time window; avoid a single uncategorized growth percentage

If you are pre-revenue, do not turn a forecast into a result. Explain what you tested, what you learned, and the next experiment that could disprove your current plan. Techstars’ application asks about traction, revenue, funding, monetization, audience, acquisition, and milestones; answer each relevant field directly, including “not yet” when that is the accurate answer.

7. Business model

State who pays, what they pay for, when payment occurs, and how the price was chosen or tested. Explain whether revenue is subscription, usage-based, transaction, license, services, or another model. If more than one party is involved, identify the economic buyer separately from the user.

Show the acquisition path that can scale: sales-led, product-led, partnerships, marketplaces, or another channel. Early channel evidence can be qualitative, but distinguish a founder’s personal introductions from a repeatable process. If unit economics are not established, list the variables you will measure rather than presenting invented payback or margin figures.

8. Competition and advantage

Include the status quo, internal workarounds, adjacent products, and direct competitors that a buyer would genuinely consider. The purpose is not to claim that you have no competition; it is to show that you understand the choice customers make today.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Then state the advantage in operational terms: proprietary data, a distribution edge, technical insight, workflow integration, lower deployment friction, or unusual execution capability. “Better UX” is a hypothesis until you show why it is difficult to copy and how customers recognize the difference. If an advantage is not yet proven, label it as a testable thesis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Team

Give each founder a role and one or two facts that explain why that person can solve this problem. Relevant domain experience, technical capability, prior distribution access, or firsthand customer knowledge is more useful than a long résumé. Make ownership clear: who builds, sells, operates, and makes product decisions?

For an incomplete team, identify the capability gap and the milestone it affects. Do not imply employees, advisors, partnerships, or credentials that are not formal or current.

10. Milestones

List the next measurable proof points in sequence. Examples include completing a pilot with a defined number of users, reaching a retention threshold, shipping a production integration, converting a specified number of paying customers, or validating a channel. Tie each milestone to a date or dependency when the information is known.

Explain what the accelerator would help unlock. A milestone is stronger than a broad ambition because a reviewer can judge whether the program’s resources are relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Accelerator fit and ask

Tailor this slide to the specific program. Name the mentor access, customer network, technical guidance, geography, or operating support that matches your next milestone. Avoid generic praise. If the application asks for an investment or fundraising information, answer in the form’s requested format; otherwise keep the deck focused on progress and fit.

Connect the ask to an outcome: “Introductions to three hospital procurement teams to complete a paid pilot” is more actionable than “help with partnerships.”

12. Closing proof and contact

End with a factual reminder of the company’s current position and a contact route. A closing slide may repeat one key metric if it adds utility for a reviewer forwarding the PDF, but do not introduce a new claim that appears nowhere else. Include the date so an old export cannot be mistaken for current results.

What to show when you are pre-revenue

Pre-revenue does not mean pre-evidence. Show the narrowest experiment that tests the riskiest assumption. For a workflow product, that might be a prototype used by a defined group; for a marketplace, it might be repeat behavior on both sides; for a regulated product, it might be a documented feasibility or compliance step.

  • Report the number and type of people interviewed, the dates, and the recurring pain you heard.
  • Show waitlist additions alongside the source and conversion step; a sign-up is not a purchase.
  • Distinguish a letter of intent, a free pilot, a paid pilot, and recurring revenue.
  • Use retention or repeat usage when it exists; one-time downloads rarely establish value.
  • State the next falsifiable test and the threshold that would change your plan.

Never create a traction graph from projections without labeling it “forecast.” If the denominator is small, show the count and sample size instead of implying statistical certainty.

Deck design and evidence standards

Make slides readable without narration

  • Use a title that states the claim, followed by the evidence that supports it.
  • Choose strong contrast and type large enough to read in a normal PDF viewer.
  • Keep labels consistent for dates, currencies, user counts, percentages, and recurring periods.
  • Annotate charts with the period, cohort, denominator, and source.
  • Use one visual hierarchy throughout: the reviewer should know where to look first.

Do not hide caveats in tiny footnotes. If a number is a one-time pilot result, a promotional price, a forecast, or a particular geography, put that qualification beside the number.

Use the appendix as a pressure valve

Move detailed calculations, interview methodology, research notes, technical architecture, cohort definitions, pricing experiments, and secondary market cases to an appendix. Reference an appendix slide from the main narrative only when it helps a reviewer verify a claim. The appendix should support the story, not become a second deck that buries the conclusion.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Build and check the deck step by step

  1. Read the current application form. Record the exact slide limit, file type, character limits, deadline, update policy, and any required media. Requirements vary by accelerator and can change.
  2. Write the one-line description first. Add the customer, problem, and product before opening a design tool. If the sentence is unclear, visual polish will not fix it.
  3. Inventory evidence. Create a source list for every metric, including date, segment, denominator, and whether it is observed or forecast.
  4. Draft claim-first titles. Write one conclusion per slide, then select only the proof needed to support it.
  5. Build the main narrative. Follow the problem, solution, timing, customer, evidence, economics, advantage, team, milestones, and fit sequence. Move secondary material to the appendix.
  6. Test for a cold read. Give the PDF to someone who has not heard your pitch. Ask them to explain the company, customer, traction, and next milestone without help.
  7. Export a stable PDF. Open the exported file, not just the source, and check fonts, hyperlinks if used, page order, chart legibility, image resolution, and file size against the application limits.
  8. Freeze a dated submission copy. Keep the exact file and answers submitted so later updates do not create conflicting numbers.

Does an accelerator application need a business plan?

Not always. Techstars Support states: “No business plan is needed for the application process. All you need to do is fill out your online application.” That statement applies to the Techstars process described by its support page, not every accelerator. Check the target program’s current instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise deck should still contain the business-plan facts a reviewer needs: customer, problem, solution, market logic, monetization, competition, team, evidence, and milestones. If a program separately requests a business plan, submit that document in the requested format rather than hiding several pages of prose inside the deck.

Deck, demo video, and team video: what belongs where?

Some applications evaluate more than the PDF. Techstars’ application preview, accessed October 17, 2026, lists a product demo video, pitch deck, and team introduction video among its core media items. It also asks about the problem, solution, incorporation, industry, team, traction, revenue and funding, monetization, audience, competitors, competitive advantage, timing, customer acquisition, and major milestones.

Product demo video

Show the shortest path from user action to result. Narrate what is happening, state what is live versus simulated, and ensure the screen text is legible. The video should demonstrate the product rather than repeat the deck’s market claims.

Team introduction video

Introduce the founders, roles, and reason for working on the problem. Techstars managing-director guidance says there is no minimum requirement, recommends being yourselves, and advises keeping the team video simple rather than worrying about high production quality. Follow the program’s duration and file rules, but prioritize clear sound and a direct explanation over elaborate editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the materials consistent

Use the same company description, metric dates, customer definitions, and stage across the form, deck, and videos. A video that claims a live feature while the deck calls it a prototype creates avoidable doubt.

How to tailor the deck to different accelerators

Do not copy a generic template unchanged. Compare the target applications on the dimensions that affect emphasis:

Comparison axis Question to answer Deck adjustment
Stage fit Does the program serve ideas, pre-product teams, early revenue, or growth companies? Emphasize learning velocity for an idea-stage application; emphasize retention, revenue quality, or repeatable acquisition at later stages.
Required materials Are a deck, demo video, team video, financial fields, or other uploads required? Reserve time and evidence for every required item; do not assume the deck can replace a missing form answer.
Evaluation emphasis Does the form focus on team, market, technical insight, social impact, or geography? Move the strongest relevant proof earlier while keeping the core company story intact.
Program alignment Which mentors, network, or resources match the next milestone? Make the ask specific and connect it to an outcome the program can plausibly influence.
Submission constraints What are the character limits, file format, slide guidance, deadline, and update rules? Build to the published constraints and preserve a dated copy of the exact submission.

Techstars says applications differ by company stage and that there is no minimum requirement; its preview lists the company questions that applicants should address. Y Combinator’s guidance instead stresses that reviewers need to understand the company quickly and clearly. Those are complementary lessons: satisfy the form, then make the evidence easy to verify.

Common failure modes and fixes

The deck starts with a slogan

Why it fails: The reviewer cannot tell what exists or who pays. Fix: Replace the slogan with a plain-language company sentence and a specific customer problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every slide is a feature list

Why it fails: Features do not establish urgency, adoption, or economics. Fix: Show one workflow, the result it creates, and evidence that users value it.

Forecasts look like traction

Why it fails: A projected curve can be mistaken for observed performance. Fix: Separate actuals from forecasts with labels, dates, and distinct visual treatment.

The market slide uses an unexplained giant number

Why it fails: A broad industry total does not show a reachable customer base. Fix: Show a bottom-up calculation and label each assumption.

“No competition” appears on the slide

Why it fails: Customers always have a status quo, even if it is a spreadsheet or manual process. Fix: Name the workaround and explain the advantage that changes the buying decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The team slide lists credentials without ownership

Why it fails: The reviewer cannot see who will execute. Fix: Assign roles, connect experience to the problem, and disclose important gaps.

The PDF works only on the founder’s laptop

Why it fails: Missing fonts, broken links, or unreadable charts undermine otherwise good evidence. Fix: Open the exported PDF on another device and inspect every page before uploading.

The deck ignores the application form

Why it fails: A beautiful file cannot substitute for required answers or media. Fix: Use the form as the checklist and make the deck reinforce, not contradict, those responses.

Final submission checklist

  • The first slide says what the company makes, for whom, and the problem addressed.
  • Each slide has one claim-first title and evidence beneath it.
  • Every metric includes a date, unit, segment, denominator where relevant, and source or method.
  • Observed results, assumptions, and forecasts are visibly distinguished.
  • The product view shows a real workflow and labels prototype or planned elements.
  • The market calculation is bottom-up or its assumptions are explicit.
  • The business model identifies the payer, price logic, and acquisition path.
  • The competition slide includes the status quo and a specific advantage.
  • The team slide assigns roles and explains founder–problem fit.
  • Milestones are measurable and tied to the accelerator’s proposed help.
  • The deck, application form, and videos use consistent definitions and dates.
  • The exported PDF meets the program’s file and size requirements and has been opened for a final legibility check.
