How to Build a More Powerful Website Monitoring System

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable website monitoring system combines internal telemetry, independent external probes, user-journey checks, actionable alerts, and tests that prove the monitoring pipeline itself works. A homepage uptime check alone cannot tell you whether checkout is broken, why a service slowed down, or whether anyone will receive an alert.

Design monitoring around the paths users depend on

Begin with the tasks whose failure would materially affect visitors or the business. List the relevant public pages, APIs, and workflows, then decide what each check should prove. The right coverage depends on the site; no single homepage check represents the whole service.

  • Public pages: check the homepage and important landing pages for reachability and expected content.
  • APIs: check critical endpoints for successful responses and, where useful, expected response content.
  • Workflows: exercise login, search, checkout, or other journeys where a page can load while the task still fails.
  • Dependencies: monitor external services when their failure would be visible to your users.

Write down what constitutes success for each path before choosing tools. A successful TCP connection, an HTTP status, and a completed browser workflow are different levels of evidence.

Combine internal metrics with external probes

Use white-box telemetry to understand what the system is doing

Instrument the application and infrastructure for request volume, errors, latency, resource use, and dependency health. These measurements help explain system behavior and narrow down causes when a user-facing check fails. Prometheus is an open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit: its server scrapes and stores time series, evaluates rules, and can supply dashboards through Grafana or other API consumers. Internal telemetry is not proof that a visitor can reach the site. A healthy process can coexist with broken DNS, a bad route, a failed CDN path, or an unusable page.

Use black-box probes to test from outside

Probe public endpoints from outside the monitored environment. This checks reachability and response behavior from the observer’s point of view, rather than relying only on signals emitted by the service itself. Prometheus recommends supplementing white-box monitoring with external black-box monitoring. Prometheus alerting practices

Prometheus’s Blackbox Exporter uses a multi-target pattern: Prometheus scrapes the exporter’s /probe endpoint and passes the target and module; relabeling retains the target identity in the resulting metrics. The official guide demonstrates HTTP probes and multiple modules. Prometheus multi-target exporter guide

Choose checks that match the failure mode

Do not treat all probes as interchangeable. Select the simplest check that can detect the failure you care about, and add a deeper check for workflows that a basic network or HTTP test cannot validate.

Check type What it can help verify Where it is insufficient on its own
HTTP/S Web response behavior, including whether a request gets an expected response. A response alone does not prove a multistep task or interactive page works.
DNS Whether a name resolves as expected. Resolution does not establish that the destination accepts connections or serves the right content.
TCP Whether a connection can be established to a target. Connectivity does not establish successful application behavior.
ICMP Host reachability where the target and network support ICMP. Support is not universal, and host reachability is not the same as a working website.
Traceroute Information that can help inspect the network path. It is diagnostic context, not a substitute for an application-level check.
Scripted or browser check More involved request sequences or visitor-facing workflows. Use it for paths that justify the added setup and execution complexity.

Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring documents DNS, TCP, ICMP, traceroute, multiple HTTP/S requests, and scripted or browser-based k6 checks. Its documentation describes the service as a black-box monitoring solution provided as part of Grafana Cloud. Grafana Synthetic Monitoring introduction

Build alerts around user symptoms

Alert on conditions that indicate users are having trouble, such as elevated errors or latency, rather than paging on every possible internal cause. An alert should have a clear responder action and lead to the relevant dashboard or diagnostic context. Allow brief blips where the criticality of the service permits; the right tolerance depends on the path and its impact.

Prometheus’s guidance is to keep alerting simple and actionable, alert on symptoms, and avoid pages where there is nothing to do. Prometheus alerting practices

  • For every alert, identify who should respond and what first action they can take.
  • Link to the dashboard, logs, or probe details needed to investigate that symptom.
  • Review alerts that repeatedly fire without a meaningful response; adjust or remove them.
  • Separate notification severity according to user impact and the response required.

Monitor the monitoring system

A monitoring stack can fail quietly: probes may stop running, metrics may not be ingested, rules may not evaluate, or notifications may not arrive. Check the availability and correct operation of the monitoring components, and test the full path from a synthetic failure or test alert through to delivery to the intended destination. Prometheus specifically recommends an end-to-end black-box alert-delivery check because it can catch faults that component-level alerts miss. Prometheus alerting practices

LANProbe 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet/USB Bypass Network Tap
  • (10/100/1G) Gigabit Bypass network tap / sniffer equivalent to port mirror on a switch.
  • The two monitor/sniff ports are isolated from the network being monitored.
  • Automatic bypass of device on power fail.
  • Power-over-Ethernet (POE) pass-through. Rated at .75A max at 57vdc
  • 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.

Keep an external monitoring path where practical, so an outage of the application’s own environment does not also remove every signal that it is down. Decide how responders will know if that independent path itself stops reporting.

Keep metric labels under control

Metric labels make observations easier to filter, but every distinct label set consumes resources. Prometheus guidance says each label set adds RAM, CPU, disk, and network cost. It advises keeping most metrics low-cardinality and investigating alternatives for metrics over 100 cardinality or likely to grow that large. This is Prometheus operational guidance, not an industry-wide benchmark. Prometheus instrumentation practices

Be especially deliberate with labels built from values that can continually multiply, such as arbitrary user identifiers or unbounded request paths. Preserve dimensions that help explain and route incidents, but avoid turning every unique value into a separate time series.

Choose hosted or self-managed probes deliberately

Prometheus is designed to operate as a standalone server and can be a fit for numeric time-series monitoring. A self-managed setup gives your team responsibility for deployment, updates, storage, and availability of the monitoring components. Grafana Cloud Synthetic Monitoring is a managed option documented with public or private probes, check metrics and logs, and Grafana Alerting. The appropriate choice depends on how much operational work you want to own and what probe locations and check types you need. Prometheus overview · Grafana Synthetic Monitoring introduction

  • Operations: decide who deploys, updates, and maintains the probe infrastructure.
  • Probe location: determine whether checks should run publicly, privately, or both.
  • Coverage: match supported protocols and browser or scripted checks to your critical paths.
  • Integration: consider how check data, alerts, and configuration fit with existing systems and code-based workflows.
  • Cost drivers: estimate execution volume at the required frequency and across selected probe locations. Grafana documents that checks run independently from every selected probe, so execution count scales with probe count and affects billing.
  • Failure independence: consider whether the monitoring path remains available when the application’s hosting environment is impaired.

Prometheus monitoring data should not be treated as a per-request billing ledger; Prometheus cautions that its data may not be complete enough for that purpose.

Roll out in a practical sequence

  1. Inventory user-critical paths. Record the endpoints and workflows whose failure would matter, along with a concrete success condition for each.
  2. Add internal telemetry. Collect the core request, error, latency, resource, and dependency measurements needed to investigate failures.
  3. Probe externally. Add independent checks for public reachability and the expected response; use workflow checks where simple probes cannot detect the relevant failure.
  4. Connect alerts to response. Create symptom-based alert conditions, assign an owner, and link each notification to useful diagnostic context.
  5. Test delivery and probe health. Verify that a test event reaches the intended responder and that probe execution, ingestion, and evaluation are being observed.
  6. Review operational cost and noise. Revisit check frequency, selected probe count, metric cardinality, and alerts that do not prompt action.

Troubleshoot gaps in coverage

Symptom Likely gap Useful next step
Dashboard looks healthy while visitors report the site is unreachable. Internal metrics do not test the complete public path. Add an external probe and distinguish DNS, connection, and HTTP response failures.
HTTP checks pass but login or checkout fails. The check only tests a basic response, not the user journey. Add a scripted or browser-based check for the critical workflow.
An outage occurs but no notification arrives. The alert rule, notification integration, or delivery path may be broken. Test end-to-end alert delivery and independently monitor the monitoring components.
Alerts fire repeatedly without a useful response. The alert may track a cause rather than a user symptom, or may be too sensitive for the service’s criticality. Review the condition, tolerance for brief blips, ownership, and linked diagnostic context.
Monitoring resource use grows unexpectedly. Labels may be creating too many distinct time series. Inspect label dimensions and reduce or redesign high-cardinality values.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a screenshot API replace website uptime monitoring?

No. A screenshot shows a page’s visual state at capture time; it does not replace reachability probes, application telemetry, or an alert-delivery check.

Can Prometheus monitor external endpoints directly?

Prometheus can scrape a Blackbox Exporter’s /probe endpoint with a target and module, using relabeling to preserve target identity in the resulting metrics.
